- The steep spiral on your commercial pilot check ride is one of the most misunderstood maneuvers out there. Today I break down the maneuver and simplify it so you can have 100% performing it on your check ride.

Thanks for another excellent RV 12 video! What is your starting altitude for this maneuver in the 12?
Thanks! So from a practical stand point you can start it from any altitude, but for check ride purposes you’re typically going to want to start it at least 3500 AGL. 👍
How much did your pilot license cost
Well it really depends on a lot of factors… but on average you can get it done from around 12-15k if you’re consistent and dedicated. It can certainly be a lot more than that too :-)
My advice is to save up enough money to take two lessons a week and you will minimize the costs to get your ticket. I’m no expert but figure 2 lessons at one hour each per week. Do the math for the plane plus instructor. If you fly frequently enough you may be able to get it done in 60-70 hours. I’ve seen many who have been taking lessons for 2-3 years spending tons of time and money because they fly so infrequently.
I agree with the other answer, there are a lot of factors involved, and people learn at different rates, but I would recommend that you budget for $13K to $16K. If you have a gaming PC at home, a PC with a lot of horsepower, you can save some time by installing the Gleim flight instruction module for X-Plane. It's excellent! It takes you through all of your flight training for your privates pilot's license. So when you get in the plane and the meter is running with an instructor sitting next to you, you're already fully familiar with the maneuvers will learn much more quickly because youve done the maneuvers in a simulator first.
