STEEP SPIRAL vs EMERGENCY DESCENT. THESE ARE TWO SEPARATE MANEUVERS LISTED IN THE ACS. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THEM AND WHY WE WOULD DO EACH ONE?
Great video! Quick clarification @6:42, increasing bank angle alone DOES NOT increase stall speed. Increasing the LOAD FACTOR, i.e increasing bank angle AND increasing back pressure on the elevator to maintain level flight or climb increases stall speed. Increasing the bank angle without increasing back elevator pressure will cause the airplane to descent because the vertical component of lift is reduced. Page 10-2 of FAA-8083-3C Airplane Flying Hanbook. Other than that love your videos.
Thanks man! I’m not sure why you needed to give clarification given the exercise we were doing. He understood that in his accelerated stalls, increasing bank and increasing angle of attack was increasing stall speed. Hence the stall warning at a higher airspeed. It’s the whole point of the maneuver to demonstrate the facts in your comment. Nobody was refuting the aerodynamics of it. Doing this maneuver it’s implied that you’re pulling back when banking, I told him to do it haha
@@LewDixAviation my intent is to help others who are watching. I am working on my cfi now and I have discovered that my understanding of things was not completely accurate. You have a lot of followers that see your videos and I just wanted to clarify that for their benefit, not your student on the video. Keep up the good work! 👍
Waaaat 172 let's goooooo Oh btw Lew: I wrote before that I did my first Discovery in a Warrior and it.. did not go well.. SO... I went BACK, early morning, super calm day, and went up in a 172L (Old I know, but I takes what's I can gets). I'm HOOKED now. It was an amazing experience... and it was my CFI's SECOND day and he rocked it! Now it's just a matter of money... oh boy...
Excellent Video! I'm a PPL student. Last Saturday my CFI had me practice (90* and 360* climbing/descending turns, Turns to headings). Visibility was not great due to the smoke haze which obstructed the horizon line & left us more dependent on the instruments for reference. I was able to preform all maneuvers satisfactory but my equilibrium was thrown off a bit afterwards followed by a terrible migraine! Is there anything you guys do to help cope with airsickness? Hoping to become acclimated over time!
Best advice is make sure you are hydrated and then practicing unusual attitudes with your CFI! The more you get use to it the better you feel! I was the same way at first
Never done Chandelles but it sounds like you want to instantly convert all your airspeed above stall speed into best possible turn rate and climb rate for the first 90DEG and then, best climb rate for the second 90DEG while maintaining the airspeed. The objective being to turn 180 from present course at the tightest possible turn radius.
that and trying to climb and clear the obstacle quickly which is why the first 90 degrees is just trying to clear with best rate of turn and trying to keep increasing pitch and the next 90degrees is keeping maximum pitch to climb as much as you can
@@AppleMatrixGaming yep. It’s like you were cruising along straight and level and just found out that there’s a stepped wall right in front of you and so you must ascend to clear the rising steps but also turn around quickly to get away from it.
I know this is an old vid... but that first stall is one of the PPL things.... being "Macho" (cocky) about it. Young bob was so busy talking... he wasn't "Listening" to his instructor, since commercial standards are first indication. Not to mention... he had a secondary stall indication trying to recover too quickly.
Instead of using the usual bleeping sound over the swears (if you feel you must bleep them), you should use the "two people on the radio transmitting at the same time" squeal.
Awesome! Seeing "Young Bob" make those mistakes makes me feel alot better about the mistakes I make on my training flights. Reminds me we're all the same! Love the videos!
Man after building time all you do is take off, fly straight and level, land, repeat. Ya lose that training mindset and some of those fine tuned skills and with new maneuvers yeah I felt like a scrub at some points haha!
FAA: “The objective of the steep spiral is to provide a flight maneuver for rapidly dissipating substantial amounts of altitude while remaining over a selected spot. This maneuver may be useful during an emergency landing.” I’ve never had to use a steep spiral in a normal situation. Seems like a good tool for an emergency situation to me. While they are different in this video we used it as a simulated emergency.
@@LewDixAviation ok. Thanks. Yeah the steep spiral emphasizes over a point. The emergency descent doesn't seem to care if it's over (around) a point....but rather just to lose altitude ASAP (engine fire/decompression). I find this topic often results in a lot of differing opinions among pilots and CFIs alike. Thank you for your insight.
Young Bob is flying like a butterfly 👐 No ailerons mate on the stall, Radar only, fly like a pro On a turn to a stall, for recovery never use Ailerons only Rader you are encouraging the stall all you are doing with the ailerons, 60 Degrees bank, on a suiside mission with a such a low altitude
Yet another awesome vlog! Hey man, I have been pondering on some ideas. I am a very new pilot in training and I'm wanting to try and do something cool with my TH-cam channel. I have the complete plan we could talk about later if you were willing, but It would just basically involve me paying you to instruct me for a total of 5 hours. Im sure you are incredibly busy and I completely understand either way. If you would be willing to go over everything, I can direct message or email whenever your available.
Great video. Can’t wait for the video when a controller finally says “Young Bob!” Haha
Lmao I love these two feeding off of each other’s energy
Loved the different procedures and maneuvers.
"Butter Ass Landing" indeed!

Young Bob wearing a DLX shirt?! Paintball mixing in with my flying vids?! I think I've reached nirvana.
Thanks for the great vids! Love seeing how other CFIs teach commercial maneuvers.
Perhaps keep a hand on the throttle during takeoff & climb out. There was a lot of aileron use during the stalls.
Long time mate!!! 🎉
Love your videos dude 💯...was waiting eagerly!
“Bob Hooverrrrrr!!!” Been yelling that on guard in the Philly area
Another amazing video!
Extremely fun flying! To the max!
Wait a tic! You got the engine back??? Bobby blew it.. He shat on a turtle! Where was the forward slip? Then the butter ass landing!
Great instructor student rapport!
Great video as always!
Ya never know what to expect on LewDix……..”butter ass” 🤣
If there was ever any doubt that pilots are geeks, it was confirmed at "oh mylanta" 🤣🤦♂️

Practice flying by instruments in a sim, for tens of hours, then do it in the air. You'll get used to it I'm sure.

King Bob once he makes commercial rating and for that vid an cut the minions edit is fully required
that's all of us Fing up on the easy shit

....good thing you "got the engine back" just in time
Awesome
I’m assuming your power setting on an an emergency spiral descent is idle?
Yes. I add some power to clear the engine on each 360 turn.
Lewdix, your videos are great!! I'm wondering how you record the cockpit audio these days? I have a Gopro Hero 7 Silver.

How did the ride go?
@@LewDixAviation I won.

Definitely should’ve just yelled “YOUNG BOB” on CTAF and seen the look of confusion on the DPE’s face
How can I learn or take up cpl course from you...what's the way..I'm sure everyone wants to know 😀
Steep spiral vs emergency descent? Aren’t those two different maneuvers?

"first indication" three times, okay then so we will do a full stall? Lol. It's funny how we sometimes get locked in and miss key details.
😂 Absolutely!

Interesting. But those maneuvers are standard maneuvers for PPL.
Buttered ass landing? Excuse me Sir Young Bob, what did you just say?
"Yanking and Banking" ... 😂
