    I noticed you pulled the oil cap to smell the oil instead of inspecting the dip..... Oh wait, that's right, LOL 😖.... At any rate, it will be interesting to see how these engines do in the long run. Extremely satisfied F150 5.0 owner here down in Connecticut. Love the vids.... please keep them coming..

      They took fords weakness in their eco line and made them work. I still don't like the fact that it's direct injection, but it's going to do better than Ford and gms. That's partially why they waited so long. If Trump had gotten in office in 2020, the hemi would still be in the trucks. Make sure you vote yhe right way, the other way crushes our vehicles, literally

      Lol. Come on man. This high output aint gonna be a longevity engine. It gonna break down but it's bad ass. It kills that coyote but it will be dead and gone while the coyote will be the longest lasting engine putting out over 400 hp. But the standard output might do well for longevity. We will see.

      Be careful about making statements that are not facts. We don’t how well it will or will not last. The internals are very strong on these motors and an inline 6. I just think that people get way carried away in misinformation.

      They under European oversight. European motor don't run dip sticks anymore for many years.

      I would have preferred a dipstick, because I actually check my oil, but probably 98% of people don’t. Stellantis probably figured it would monetarily be the same cost to eliminate the dipstick and replace it with a low oil light. Safer to for most people, since they don’t actually use the dipstick.

      All of the thermostats are going on the Hurricane at about 35k. Not a traditional thermostat, it's like a plastic housing. They are on severe back order.

      @@huemongus3742ram/Jeeps are like euro vehicles as under the hood major components are made of plastic and we all know what happens to plastic when it constantly goes through heating and cooling cycles. It will be expensive just junk in a matter of years with plastic components failing, cracking, leaking. Just ask BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW.

    Check out the towing test for the HO Hurricane on TFL. It actually did better than its competitors. Ram engineers are not idiots. Everybody talks about no dipstick, just like everyone complained when the Rams began coming with rotating shifter. Now, it’s just normal. The oil indicator instead of a dipstick is probably a good thing for many people. When I was dating my wife, she was driving a Geo Tracker with 35,000 miles on it and she had never had the oil changed because she didn’t know she was supposed to. She’s not an idiot, she’s a highly respected Internal Medicine doctor. Some people just aren’t mechanically inclined. She can’t work on your car, but she can diagnose diabetes or heart disease in the guy that can fix on your car.

      Depends. If the goal is to design something noone wants, then watch sales take a dump, then, as GW once famously said, "Mission Accomplished".
      Maybe it will outpull a Hemi in some random test, between two new vehicles. Noone gives a shit about a few percent performance difference. We do however care about the cost of repairs and parts replacement over a decade of ownership and 250,000 miles.
      Small displacement turbo truck engines have been around long enough that we all know how that goes. Turbos shitting the bed, intercooler leaks, the famous intercooler full of water condensation, cough cough Ford, that bogs, backfires, and sets a check engine light whenever you go more than half throttle. The kinds of POS engines have been around plenty long enough for us to know what were getting!

      I think you made up your mind in 2015. Current gm 2.7l putting up better reliability rating up to 100k than their 5.3l. Fords 3rd generation ecoboost have engines with 300k plus miles on them now. Original turbos. Im still buying n/a engines for now but these turbo engines are getting better. So I agree with you kinda. Keep an open mind. Things do improve @kensmith174

      @@fullbloodedchristian6440 You need to rewatch that video. The Ram was at 248F coolant temps and the F150 was at 250F when it went to limp mode. Were talking 2* difference, on an F150 that wasnt even rated to tow that heavy of a trailer vs that best possible configured Ram(Tradesman with 3.92 gear). It did not SMOKE the Ford.
      Also you conveniently forgot to mention the low oil pressure warning.🤣 I think I would rather my coolant get to hot than my oil pressure be low.

      If you are primarily looking for a daily commuter and only tow a 8k trailer half a dozen times a year, the 2500 is a waste (and absolutely more expensive if optioned up to have the same features).
      Why not just go for a 3500 dually instead of the 2500?
      If someone wants a 1/2 ton, they won’t switch to a 3/4 ton with a completely different design to avoid the turbo; they just choose a different 1/2 ton without a turbo.

      A 1500 is a glorified mall cruiser, nothing more. I don’t want any of the crap that you are forced to take when getting a 3.0.
      A regular cab 2500 4x4, 6.4 hemi, 4x4, 8 foot bed in tradesman trim is all that I need.
      I prefer the solid front axle over IFS, far stronger too.

      I have a NBS 2020 5.7 Hemi 1500 that originally cost $70k. I have seen 2024 6.4 new Powerwagons that low today. I wish I had a Powerwagon even though I commute with my truck and my trailer is only 5000 pounds tops.
      Still I would be willing to try one of these new HO SSTs. At least they are noticeably quicker.

    Most thinner oils are recommended for fuel economy reasons. If you look up the oil specs on AllData for many modern engines that recommend 0w20 for example, the 0w20 is only recommended for the United States, everywhere else recommends something like 5w20 or 5w30. Ill take my chances with a thicker oil. And no, if your engine fails under warranty the dealer is not going to analyze the oil to test the viscosity, unless youre running like bar and chain oil or something obvious.

      Look at some of the Toyota V8 manuals. Here in the US it absolutely must be 0W-20. Overseas the same motors are fine to run 20W-50 🤣. Even the new 3.4LTT in the Tundra is speced with 5W-30 overseas in some cases while its 0W-20 only here.

      It's important to mention warranty could be denied if proof of service receipts aren't provided. I do my own maintenance and I keep logs/records of dates mileage and all receipts. Never had an engine problem or warranty claim made BUT my sisters 1L eco boom let go and she was denied warranty with no proof of service.

      Exactly what I was going to say. Look at the first get 3.5 ecoboost that was is the SHO it was originally 5w20 but when they started putting them in the f150 they changed them over to 5w30 without any changes with engine internals

    Down here in the states, at least in CO the 91 octane is more than $1/gal more expensive than diesel. So while that HO is tempting, I'm still looking at the LZ0 I6 diesel from GM(c).

      If you are buying the truck for towing then realize that the HO trucks actually have a nearly 2500 lb reduction in max tow rating vs the SO trucks.
      Also, with the lower compression ratio, I bet the HO runs completely fine on 87 octane but just wouldnt make its peak output. The modern PCM's can limit boost based on detected octane, Ford has been doing it in their Ecoboost engines since 2010. Thats why you see F150 3.5L Ecoboosts picking up 35-40 whp when running 93 instead of 87.

    I hear, "more heat, higher cylinder pressure, running 20+ pounds of boost," and I can't help but think these will all help lead to lower reliability, higher maintenance and repair costs, etc.

      @@GettysGarage on this subject, I really wonder if you could make the HO last much longer with the beefier components if you were to baby it. My example is, I want to buy a comfortable truck as it would essentially be my work office as i'm a highway roads and bridges construction inspector and often do my work reports in the truck and it just so happens the highest tier truck is the most luxurious interior of any truck I've ever seen and it has the HO engine. I'd be doing mostly highway driving and then driving from jobsite to jobsite and potentially idling for a few hours a day. My current 2019 ram 1500 has about 3000 driving hours and 4800 idled hours and I worry about the camshaft/lifter issues that they're known for and wonder if the HO would potentially be a good option. I don't plan on buying it for about a year while I wait to see if any major issues come up and save up the money to buy it in cash + trade in, I would appreciate any insight you have on this and hope you're doing great.

    Many people don't understand that oil is only a certain thickness/viscosity at one specific temperature. As the temp changes, so does the viscosity. This means that 0w-20 at 0C is much, much, MUCH thicker than 5w-30 or 0w-40 at 100C. Running a thicker oil is never a problem, unless the oil is extremely cold at well below freezing temps. 0w-20 is there for one reason: corporate MPG. Trucks that have used oil analysis performed by labs often have better results with thicker oil. My hemi had great reports on thicker oils and the worst reports (most iron in the oil) were when using 20 grade oils.

    In your last video you pointed out that the turbo cost 10k each to replace. I would rather have the 3500 with the 6.4 Hemi. The 2022 5.7 Hemi 1500 4th gen I have now will have to last me for life. I am priced out of the market now.

      You wouldn’t replace the turbo anymore than you replace the engine; you rebuild it, and rebuilding it would be much less the. 10k.
      We don’t know the longevity of the turbos yet, but if they last as long as the engine, it isn’t a big deal as it’s likely close to the same cost and effort to completely rebuild the Hurricane and turbos at 300k miles as it is to completely rebuild the Hemi.
      If it turns out they die much earlier, then it becomes a different conversation, but it is too early to make any definitive judgements on it (though I would avoid it for a couple years until we have enough info to make those judgements and let others risk the money to figure it out).

      @@Cloud30000One would be facetious to assume that turbo reliability will be any better than the Ecoboosts platforms have experienced. They’ve dropped turbos before 100K miles. The simple truth is that smaller boosted engines will have high costs of ownership IF you are the type of customer that keeps a vehicle for extended periods of time. One turbo failure will make the average customer wish they had a hemi.

    I feel like the HO would be better in a work vehicle because of the better forged internals and thicker oil requirement. Also the bigger intercooler would probably be better for sustained loads.

      I agree with this. Also, the lower compression ratio which would still be beneficial even if you are not using all 510 ft-lbs of torque and 540 hp. Pulling a trailer up a grade at 60 mph still needs a lot of torque and cylinder pressure and I am guessing the lower CR will help.

    Thanks for the cool vid. Only point I’m going to make is that all these engines, including big brother diesels, continue to become more and more complex and cost prohibitive to repair outside of warranty period! Starting with cab off for many repairs.

    I'm probably wrong, but I bet that the HO will be the sweet spot in terms of reliability. I expect both of the engines to be pretty reliable in 3 - 5 years, but the HO might be incredible. RAM is really smart to go with the inline 6.

    No engine on earth will break due to thicker oil. Some manufacturers actually have a graph for the owner to choose the oil thickness based on ambient temperatures and severe use\ racing. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY USE 5W-40 OR 0W-40 OIL over the 0W-20 oil.

      I stick to 5k on my 3.5 turbo charged engine in my f150 but for a standard NA engine I would also think you should stick to 5k

    Good video. Normally i agree that OEM recommended oil is best. But, it has become clear they are all going thinner now ONLY for CAFE reasons. Bumping up to the thicker grade, in full synthetic, will pay off long term. Brian at FordTechMakuloco did a great video on 5w20 vs 5w30.

    So cool, thank you for the information and the great deep dive into the engineering details.
    I am surprised there is not an EGR cooler, but I am guessing the larger air intake intercooler can deal with the EGR gas's heat, and the engine is spec'd to be running 91 octane, so the cylinder temperatures can be a bit higher.

    From my experience with working on rentals that keep probably only had 2 oil changes so far and you know everyone has been driving the piss out of them so maybe a little tougher than people think… also Chrysler has been using plastic thermostat housing since 2007 nothing new there … the only thing that concerns me is on your last video someone commented that the durability tests have changed so that worries me … but the guy that designed the hemi that we all love was in on this motor also ..

    ​@blackice7408 So far it's been fine. Interesting that you asked if it's an SRT 10 killer. I did the Viper engine calibration and dyno testing, including the truck, at Chrysler before I retired. I would say it's probably quicker than the Viper powered quad cab.

    Greetings Alex.
    I certainly like the Hurricane engine project. But the way they take their performance and reliability for granted leaves a lot to be desired and the worst thing is that the client ends up paying for their inefficiencies. I know that engineering projection programs should only be approved when they do so physically and under real tests of work and stress on their engines. Not the other way around. But I tell you; I like Hurricane projects!

    Yeah like the EPA MPG targets? I'd be curious if this engine is used overseas and what oils are specified.
    Its like my GX460. It MUST be 0W-20 here in the US but you look at the overseas owners manuals with the same exact motor manufactured in the same factory and its able to run up to 20W-50.

    I have a 2021 Ram 1500 with the 5.7. No etorque. It has a dipstick. I change the oil every 3500 miles (city driving). I buy new every 2-3 years, but there is zero chance I am buying this hurricane. I’m keeping this one until Stellantis pulls their head out and brings back a V8

    I’m wondering if this means a HO Hurricane detuned to the power of a SO Hurricane will run cooler and more efficiently when towing; if so, that might make it worth the price as it means the engine should see less wear and last longer then the SO if you change tunes when towing to destress the engine.

      It's both. Both HO and SO share that issue since they're practically identical other than some major parts in the HO being stronger than the SO's.

    One of the great things about the F150 3.5L dual injection system is how much overhead they have in the fuel system for more power as well as easy upgrading of the port fuel system for cheap.
    The fact that they have to run dual high pressure pumps on this engine kinda sucks.

    These seem like amazing engines... for a race car. There are different demands on a work truck. You will not see these doing farm work in 10 years without massive repair costs.

      Exactly. All of this extea power n torque on the ho - when it pulls amd hauls less than the 5.7 hemi - all while requiring premium fuel. Thats performance muscle/aports car specs n territory. Not to mention im very aure this will get much worse fuel economy towing than a v8

    20 weight exists because of the Gov / EPA. They do not have our best interest in mind. 0w40 would absolutely benefit the standard output engine.

    I would run 0w40 in the SO if I had one. Anything approved for porsche would be ideal. You need to watch what happened with TFL put the SO through the Toaster Test... Seriously go watch!

    Hey Cutie, thanks for putting together this mini-series. Time will tell what the long term reliability will be like. I’m gonna hold onto my Coyote until such time the electric charging infrastructure improves then I’ll call it a day and go electric.

    I hear they have a small flaw xd seems around 15k miles a plastic piece inside the thermostat housing breaks... And the part is on backorder till June......

    We will be buying a new truck next year and there are things we want , and things we want to avoid .
    Just the engines and transmissions !
    Don’t care about any fluff ( interior ) features .

    Is it true that the cab has to come off of the frame to replace the engine? or the turbos?

      I'm not sure, but the turbo are pretty wide open so I would guess not.

    Good video! But I just can't wrap my head around a HO engine in a work truck. These are BMW M3 numbers...Well, time will tell but I'm skeptical.

      I agree, If you want a work truck buy the SO 3L. much more in line with a work application.

      They’ve been in most cars since the early 2000s. I have a 2005 dodge magnum rt which has one.

      No but the EGR on a gasoline engine isnt all bad. It doesnt cause reduced efficiency like a diesel, it actually improves it in a gas motor but reducing pumping losses.
      It also doesnt gum up the intake with soot.

    The move to thinner oils, now as low as 0w8 for some vehicles, is to conform to C.A.F.E. standards and has nothing to do with what is best for the engine. My Mazda calls for 0w20 in North America, 5w30 for the rest of the world.
    Yes, a dealer would likely use ANY excuse to deny a drivetrain warranty claim.

    The difference between the 2 is that the High Output will fail even EARLIER because of the increased pressure & heat

    To me this looks like Stellantis looked at a BMW engine and thought it would be appropriate for trucks. I think it will have just as many issues and the maintenance costs will be just as high as a twin turbo BMW inline 6, if not even more. That is if Ram even exists long enough to sell many of these, with all of the stuff going on with Dodge and with the Stellantis CEO right now.

    A common issue of ALL manufactures motors the last decade is losing a quart every 1,000 miles and computer oil life meters being 7k to 10k mile intervals. Stelantis specifically Jeep owners and KIA owners are familiar with oil consumption tests needing warranty motors. So....... why would Stelantis OR buyers be OK with no dipsticks on $80,000 vehicles? To save pennies a truck. Its time to DO and expect better.

    The price on the HO version doesn't make sense. You can grab a 2500/3500 for practically the same cost and have a lot more payload and towing capacity plus a more bed.

    0-20 oil in a turbocharged motor especially in a truck is hard to believe. I would be concerned about oil shear and oil blow-by. I would run a good 5-30 like Shell t6 multi vehicle in both applications standard and H.O. If this was a smaller vehicle the 0-20 may work but not in a 3-4 ton vehicle no way. Just watch it in a few years Stellantis will issue a service bulletin to switch over to 0-40 or 5-30. Porsche uses 0-40 in straight 6 turbocharge application and ford 3.5 eco boost 5-30 . Many owners of turbocharged Subaru and VWs stick with high performance 5-30 oil. I Believe you can use the lower viscosity oils in lighter turbocharged vehicles but not in the heavier ones.

      that makes sense, I wouldn't be surprised if they change the weight, they did that with the 3L EcoDiesel engines a number of years ago because those babies were blowing up.

      @@GettysGarage For initially spec'd 5W-20 in the 3.5L Ecoboost and after a year or two bumped it up to 5W-30. My guess is because of fuel dilution.

    If you blow the engine, the oil would get so contaminated that they would have no way of determining if it is 0W-30 or 0W-40.

    If you watch SUV and TRUCK talk . He is buying a 2025 TRX ram 1500. There was or is big discounts!!!! He priced a big horn Ram 1500 and a TRX was cheaper I believe. Watch his TRX or Ram 1500 buying video.

      Noone cares. Small displacement turbos belong it neon green Hondas, with a bigass wing on the back and a 9inch diamer fartcan exaust. People who used trucks for work expect the to last a couple decades and a few hundred thousand miles. We all remember how Ford's little 3.5 liter turbo v6 POS F150 worked out.

    here in aus...91 octane is the base sold. we have 95 and 98 for sale too. 98 all day if you want to mod your motor....no pinging with plenty of advance 😊

      Its not the same rating is it? You use RON to rate octane while we use AKI. 98 RON is the same as 93 AKI

    Another example of only selling to the primary buyer. The primary buyer is usually well off enough to buy another at the end of the loan or "life of vehicle". The biggest problem here is that once the warranty expires the secondary buyer can't keep up. Society needs trickle down economics to help poor families. Nearly every vehicle since 2018 is not going to make it to the 3rd rung of society. The overwhelming complexity is another tax upon the poor. Refuse buying anything that you can't estimate to last 15+ years on philosophical grounds. You don't have to own it that long but think about the increasing burden on a family that otherwise would have gotten by. Or an entrepreneur who is struggling with starting a business. These burdens mount on people. "Death by a thousand paper cuts" is a very real thing. Do your part and resist. You will be rewarded by a smiling face that will never know you by name.

    Sounds like a dumb eurotrash move to manufacture all these extra parts when you could have spec'd one engine for HO and then used tuning to create the SO...
    Typical euro move that results in less cost effectiveness and a huge increase in required parts on the shelf for repairs.
    Not shocking that stellantis is in the position it's in financially.

      I see 4Xe Jeeps everywhere. 4Xe Wranglers make up like 50% of total Wrangler sales as of Q1 2024. So not sure where you are getting that they are not selling well.

      It has nothing to do with new powertrains. You can still get the pentastar in the Wrangler and Gladiator and Grand Cherokee.
