      Me too. I just passed my motorbike test a couple of days ago after having driven a car for 10 years so knowing what I need to do on the road was, for the most part, second nature. Luckily I had already some motorbike experience from when I was younger and just riding my Dad's bike around the house and on private property so I knew where the motorcycle controls were and what they were used for so that helped too. The slow speed maneuvers and the extra observations that are required on a motorcycle I had to learn and work on. I plan on continuing to practice my slow speed stuff even though I have finished my test and all now because they are useful skills to keep sharp for the day when you may need them.

      @Scoupe400 I learned to drive a car first, but rode a bike for 4 years before getting my first car.
      Learning to drive first made knowing how to ride better (rules of the road etc) as I feel a CBT doesn't teach half of what you need to know.
      But riding for years before actually driving has made me way more alert in a car than most other drivers. I think car drivers who have never ridden are too zoned out.

    i do find it surprising how fast a newbie is expected to learn .. I did my CBT and went from car park doing figure 8's and going round in a circles straight to road in one day ! i know that's only way to learn but i did find it a bit much to take in. ..We did learn about junctions, give way, lanes ..etc but was only "simulated" on car park .. and its a huge amount to remember (as well as looking out for other cars) when you actually on road, and its very different to a car park.. am shocked government chose this method to learn people to ride a bike for first time.. well the complexity of road sense to be more precise, riding part easy.. no wonder new riders get knocked off

    • @martinadi6922
      @martinadi6922  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There is indeed a lot to know and deal with. Back in the day, most folk cycled before getting a powered two wheeler, so knew stuff. And motorbikes were the transport of the working class to get to the factories, so Govt didn't want to make it too tricky to get going. And on a bike you do pay attention, cos you know it will hurt if you get it wrong! Easy for folk to switch off in a car and feel very protected and safe, yet can cause a huge amount of death and mayhem.
      So, some historical reasons and some reality, is why CBT allows you to head out on the road as a learner. These days, most young folk could do with knowing more about the road system first, quite a few haven't even ridden a bicycle on the road as the taxi of Mum & Dad have taken them everywhere!

      @Richard Mather true .some riding schools don't give a shit and rush through it, and not explaining things , they just want money ..that much is obvious when you been on a CBT for a long time and have to keep retaking it (the way they are with outer students I mean)

      @@cyberjack I was a mature yet total novice at my recent CBT, had told the school I attended that I was beforehand, was ok initially with balance etc however my problem came with using the throttle, in my earpiece I was barked orders not to do this, or that with the throttle (which I didn't realise-being a novice!). There was no training or detailed instruction on how to use the throttle and brakes in combination before getting on the bike! so just had to guess. It became clear I was making a mess of it, but in reality they should have checked with me beforehand that I knew how and when to use, and not use, the controls such as the throttle on the motorbike, before taking the cash! I quit the day half way through as I didn't feel safe. I may try again in the future after doing some research - pity the school didn't tell me to do that first!

    i found that riding a bicycle on the road for the months before doing my cbt helped me a lot. i was not overly distracted by cars pulling out and being in close proximity to me because i was used to it. it also improved my road sense quite a bit, i would highly recommend it

    • @martinadi6922
      @martinadi6922  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cycling would be quite useful experience! Having some experience and knowledge of the road system will be helpful! Back in the day when they invented CBT majority of youngsters all rode push bikes and had used the road system before. These days most have never ridden a cycle on the roads. Been driven around by parents for 16+ years but some haven't even looked out the window much! White lines and road signs - what do they mean! One proposed change the DVSA are planning on making is getting folk to do a full Theory Test before CBT. In many ways probably a good idea, but will put some folk off. And some Questions are a tad obscure and how they score the Hazard Perception part is sometimes very weird.

    • @Pony69er

      Steven green yes you can fail, it is training not a test but you can fail, if you are a danger to others or yourself and don't show signs that you no what the rules of the road are then you fail, when I did my CBT the guy before me in the morning failed due to this and another had failed between me doing CBT and mod1 which was only a week, learn the highway code, go out with someone as a pillion or passenger in a car and get use to the rules of the road and you will be fine, if you already drive just brush up on your skills first it doesn't hurt and there's more at stake if you go wrong on a bike. when doing mod 2 as well the examiner was stricked with me as I already drove so just bare that in mind but best thing I've done and complete different way of life, good luck to you all, ride safe.

    Just a little tip to the guys out there, the guy at the beginning having trouble coming to a stop. The easiest way to avoid this, and it really is simple... Just make sure when you brake to a stop that the wheel and handlebars are straight. If you stop with the wheel turned or at an angle the bike's weight will be off center and you'll be caught off balance suddenly when you have to support it. Also another rookie mistake is to try and use your weight to move the bike, keep your inner thighs hugging the tank, you should be holding on with your legs more than your hands. Always lean in with the bike as you turn, don't cross up...

    hello. i just my cbt first time. and the things to remeber is 1,2 and 3 . with that i mean the position in the road. 1.is the left side of the road when turning left. 2. is the center/centre of the road.(always stay in center of road).
    position 3. is right side of road for turning right. when turning left do right mirror, left mirror, left shoulder, indicate left and then move to position 1 and always cancel the indicator after or when half way into the turn. and turning right is the same but go left mirror right mirror. right shoulder indicate right and move to position 3.
    also before you turn always do a lifesaver and after the turn move back to defensive position or position 2.
    hope this helps you.

    On my first day, a woman driving a range rover reversed into a major road whilst I was going downhill at probably 35 mph, I was leading and there were lots of cars behind me, I panicked, instead of finding an escape route or simply just going around her leaving a big gap, and not even thinking that she wont just blindly reverse into the road. I decided to slow down and continue keeping focus on her... I am lucky I had a fantastic instructor, she shielded me from the cars rolling down hill behind me. I made a few other mistakes but this was the dangerous one.

The number of actual situations where they're relevant and useful is a tiny fraction of the total number you're 'supposed' to do them in. A lot of the time they're unnecessary and a distraction if you've been paying attention to your mirrors and the overall situation.

    I been riding 30+ years now (shit that went quick, including aboard) and I would still recommend a lifesaver before every turn or change of direction.... Or at least keep a close check on what is following you in your mirrors, their driving behaviour and how close they are to you...The closer they are the less respect you will get from them usually...... You just never know and you never stop learning... I passed my test riding a trials style bike.. it had a better steering ark than a road bike.. I have my then girlfriend to thank for kicking my ass out of the warm bed on a wet drizzly Sunday morning to get to the test location about 12 miles away.... I am glad to see quite a few newcomers to biking even to this day..... Assume your invisible until you know cagers ( Cagers = 3-4+ wheeled transport) have seen you and you will not go far wrong.. There are advanced courses available too.. just to check you haven't adopted any bad riding habits over the years since passing the CBT.. Keep it between the kerbs and hedge rows folks...

    • @martinadi6922
      @martinadi6922  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed! Glad you've had a fun 30 years riding!
      Knowing what's around you is indeed vital. The last 'mirror-look', called a lifesaver for a reason, is usually very 'boring'! "There's never anyone sitting in my blindspot!" True! But - Eeek! Until there is!! "Wow, thank god I checked as there was a ****** whizzing past me! That was a surprise, but my habit of looking, saved my ass!! Phew!!" No surprise - no accident.
      It is surprising when someone's in your blindspot that you hadn't already spotted, but checking before moving will let you be happily surprised rather than knocked off!! Habits are usually handy, don't need the 'mental strain' of deciding to look or not this time? I always look, and just very rarely the ***** whizzing by at an odd moment didn't then get me!! (not so rare in heavy city traffic of course, and it's not just cars who might be alongside, but could be cyclists or other bikers!)
      Plan for the possibility and the worst, hope for the best, and check.

      Martin ADI: A few years ago me and some mates did our second road trip to Faro.. Folkestone, Calais, down through France via Mansell, Bordeaux then on into Spain via Seville.. Finally down to Portugal turn right.. One of our crowd had just past his test only a few weeks before the road trip.. he rode his mums Virago I think.. faultlessly.. The boy done very well.. but he was a super fit football nut.. As you may know? Long rides can take their toll on the forearms, cramp in the legs and back ache (the severity of which can depend on what you ride?) We encouraged regular stops every so often and better if it was a place of interest to wash up, grab a coffee or energy drink and wind down.. We all kept our eyes on the new comer but he had savvy.. was in no hurry to impress anyone and he wasn't impatient riding.. a natural.. it was heart warming to see.. I have just gone through a few years of not wanting anything to do with bikes at all and not really sure why? I kept the bikes of course and readied them for storage. Now I am getting keen again to ride.. The weather plays a big part in that too I think.. Regarding this some numb nuts maybe in your blind spot business.. I know roughly when they will appear there... it will usually be the one time you don't want to bother checking...:0)

    I personally feel like we need to put more into CBT, and possibly integrating parts of the A1/A2 tests, primarily for the sake on the off chance that most if not some newbie riders won't know basics of the road. You also need to understand that theirs alot of mental preparation and stress behind these things, primarily due to the fact its not a big safe metal box, and one mistake can lead to life or death.
    Coming from a guy who passed his CBT a month ago and had a brown pants moment of taking a corner too quickly and veering into an empty oncoming lane.....still passed!

      Hi Jack, we do send everyone a Highway Code quiz to get them to do some research about the road system before CBT. We often now have youngsters getting pushed onto mopeds by their parents who want to not have to give them lifts everywhere. If so, we send them more info about prep with their offspring. Back in 1990 when CBT was introduced by DVSA most youngsters had ridden bicycles to school for many years, and maybe done cycle proficiency. Many these days haven't ridden a push bike, but been driven everywhere by the taxi of mum & dad! We suggest they discuss the road system when they have them with them in their car. Also tell them a bit about O-S-M (p-s-l) and "No surprise, No accident" is a good concept. And there are only two things you can do with the word "if" - ask "what if?" or end up saying "if only!". Hee hee.
      And yes, one difference with cars is that you are more 'awake' on a motorbike as part of your head knows getting anything wrong will hurt! And the weather also has your attention.

    Most riders on this video making these mistakes such as position, gear changing, balance etc are worried about failing their lesson and conscious of the instructor behind. The truth is you can never fail your CBT, anyone can do it. After 9 years of riding, I consider myself a very experienced and safe motorcyclist. But it takes 3 things (experience/age and learning). But riding a bike is probably the most enjoyable thing anyone can do, and the most affordable too.

    • @martinadi6922
      @martinadi6922  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically it's not a 'fail' you just haven't reached the required standard. But yes, some people have to come back again cos they are not safe to be let out on the roads.
      Most of the mistakes in the video are because of a lack of knowledge of the road system not cos I'm following them! ;)

      Hi - you can start practicing now! Look at the highway code, Try a practice Theory Test online at gov .uk Look at the cars & bikes on the road - where are they going? who's going to go first? why did they stop there? etc etc Two parts to being safe & completing CBT: can you control the bike? do you understand the basics of the road system? You don't need to be on a bike to work on the road system bit now! Have fun!

    I'm doing my CBT for the first time soon so I'm definitely nervous, but from watching this I'm not sure if these students are having their nerves get the better of them or if they've never even ridden a bicycle on the road! Stopping before turning off a road when there's no traffic blocking your path; going practically straight across a roundabout... What?! I don't ride my bicycle on the roads much but even I know you don't do that stuff.
    Either way: thanks for the upload as it's nice to see the mistakes that can be made on the road so I can try make the CBT easier on myself. :)

    • @martinadi6922
      @martinadi6922  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure that will be a great benefit Denise! Two aspects to being on the road - can you control the bike? - can you control it on the road ie. understand the road system? Doesn't matter if you're the best rider ever if the first thing you do is ride under a bus!.
      So, yes, you must know how the road system works by now (!) so aside from the odd bad habit or strange idea about roundabouts, the road should be the easy bit. If you're doing it on a geared bike, it's exactly like the car (clutch, throttle, brakes, etc) and it's completely different!! Both are true at the same time! You may find the morning harder than the road ride. Anyway, good luck with it! :)
