Are you saying that even a full cake of rosin not used often will expire?

    Hello!
Rosin gets crumbly only when it’s aging? Or it can be from heat / just being dropped? I got a new instrument from an other country and rosin’s edges were crumbly and I’m worried it’s old but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a heat issue!

Apologize if I didn't completely understand do you mean sand the rosin once a week?

Hi Ken, thank you so much for getting in touch and your interest in this topic :) Correct: In order for your rosin always being ready to use, you should rub the surface of new rosin with fine sandpaper before using it for the first time and once every week after that (use 400 grit sandpaper to slightly sand off the dry surface of the rosin until you can smell the ethereal oils again). Furthermore, we recommend changing rosin after approx. six to eight months as it tends to dry out after a while. The ethereal oils, crucial for good rosin, evaporate over time and the rosin’s characteristics change as well. In case you need further help with your rosin, please take a look at stringtelligence.com or get in touch with our experts directly via pm@thomastik-infeld.com!
