    i have to make a coil for the surf pi kit. Can i use a wire of 0.3 mm instead of the 24awg (0.5) or the resistence is critical for that project (usually the resistance increases with a thinner wire ) ?

    • @SurfDetector

    G'day from Australia, i have no electrical training but i have an interest in building my own coils specifically to suit a minelab. I recently bought a multimeter and i want to learn to read the inductance of my current coils that i have. I specifically want to know how to read DD coils, as there are 5 pins, could you be kind enough to point me in the right direction, of course if you have experience with the DD's?

    • @SurfDetector
      @SurfDetector  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Mate,
      In order to read inductance you will need an LCR meter. These are readily available and the price is not too dear.
      I recommend that you purchase the book "Inside the Metal Detector" that will get you started with understanding the inner workings and it has a good section explaining PI machines which are where my interests lie predominately. There is a very good section on how to build a DD coil in the book as well. I have plans to produce a video on a DD build but not in the near term as I have too many irons in the fire at the moment. Thanks for watching my video and please subscribe.

    • @egghead2687
      @egghead2687 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SurfDetector Thanks for your reply buddy, LCR meter, have been reading on the Geotech site, but never actually heard of that, funny hey?, my interest is in building a very large DD coil like + 30in, the biggest obstacle at the moment would be the housing, would fibreglass work, it would probably be to bloody heavy, but thought i'd throw it past ya?
      And i know these coils have to be nulled or something like that, what meter would you use for that, or would you use a oscilloscope for that?

    • @SurfDetector
      @SurfDetector  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use either an oscilloscope or you could use a good voltmeter. A mono coil would be easier to build at that large size and you could house it in PVC pipe. TH-cam doesn't seem to be notifying me of new comments so sorry about the delay in replying.

    • @egghead2687
      @egghead2687 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SurfDetector Yeah mate; know all about youtube and not getting replies,i am from Australia so my interest is in building a large DD to use on my old SD, the highly mineralised soil in the goldfields causes to much false signals using a mono, a 14in mono gives me enough trouble , no way will i be digging 4 ft holes for a false signal, do you know how hard this ground is? have dug at least 3 - 3ft holes for rusty metal, and each hole took a good couple of hours to dig, bloody hard work, this is what i bought it is a " Professional Waveform Multimeter MT8206", it says it is a multimeter and oscilloscope 2 in 1, would this be good enough?
      and it has the resistance and capacitance measurement but not induction so looks like i will have to buy an LCR meter.
      Can you just explain to me why the DD coil has 5 pins, when there is only 2 wires, is the 3rd pin the ground or neutral, or whatever it's bloody called.
      A large 3D printer could probably print out a casing but not to sure if they are really common and plus you would need to have a design made up first in a specific computer program, Nexus makes carbon fibre coil housings but the bastard wants between 3-4k for his coils, i told him where he can shove it, sorry i babbled on a bit here, will keep it must shorter next time if any!!

    • @SurfDetector
      @SurfDetector  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@egghead2687 A DD coil is comprised of two separate coils, one is Transmit (TX) the other is Receive (RX) so there are 4 wires for the two coils. The 5th pin is most likely the shield.

    • @SurfDetector
      @SurfDetector  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      Welcome to my channel. Yes you are indeed correct I misspoke reading the display.
      Regarding the size of the mono coil, the 9" diameter is one that I prefer to use on my water detectors as it has relatively good depth and less weight and water resistance than a 10"
      The number of turns is figured with a coil calculator such as the one on the Geotech Forum. The recommended coil inductance for the Barracuda is between 300-500uH. The coil isn't relegated to that one detector however, I actually have it in use on my MPP at the moment.

      Good morning,
      Yes I understand that it is a little confusing to try and explain without a picture. Let me try again.
      For the coil, you have 2 leads and a shield. You should take a short piece of wire and solder it to the shield. Then you connect that short wire to one of the coil wires.
      For the cable you have a shield, you connect this to the coil shield splice that you just made. Now you have the two remaining cable wires that are twisted together, cut one of them off. You only use one of them and you connect it to the last coil wire. For the cable connection to the PCB, the cable shield will connect to earth (ground)
      I hope that isnt too confusing. Let me know. Maybe I could do a short video.

    This is why I asked if there was a capacitor in-line you went from it winded to finished never showing how it’s connected to the detector or what’s under the heat shrink you have the only videos on this and I’m so glad you took the time to do them and I know you love your tripod but in future videos could you show how you do your wiring so dumb asses like me can understand you have built numerous detectors and just knowing what you use helps a ton type of wire from the detector to the coil shit I copied most of the parts on your board

      I will be doing another coil video sometime in the near future. I will endeavor to show more detail although most people only watch videos for 90 seconds or less.

      That depends on what detector you are using and the target type and size

    The knife will interfere with your measurements any inductive material near it including nails pins etc will skew results

      I think that for the purposes of the video the setting is acceptable. Thanks for watching.
