Thanks for shairing your experiments. I am in the process of trying to increase the depth of my Surf PI 1.2. My first coil gets about four inches in the air. Doesn't matter what the metal is, all seem to register the same. Gold included.
For a pulse induction detector coil you should use stranded wire not single magnet wire! Magnet wire is the worse wire you can use, Best wire to use is Litz wire, Stranded Teflon coated wire is the second best., Regular PVC covered stranded wire being third the best. If your detector is aimed at small gold and can sample fast then you have to shield it as well and that's best done with Mylar strips after you put some PTFE spiral wrap around the coil first to provide a spacer between the windings and the shield. You MUST leave a gap in the Mylar wrap usually near were the wires come off the coil otherwise you will loose sensitivity. I would shield any PI coil, Make a coil as above and get the resistance and the inductance right as per your detector design spec and you will see a big difference! Also once your coil is working good adjust the damping resistor value in your detector as you will find you will be able to use a higher value than what was suggested in your detector design and that will increase sensitivity as well. All the above apply to fast sampling detectors like the minipulse plus but works equally well on the surf pi If you try to make a coil for a commercial PI detector like the minelabs using magnet wire they wont work at all! You failed to mention that there are hundreds of sizes of litz wire and failed to mention there is a right and wrong way to apply mylar as well.. 250/46 dual sleeve layered litz is the highest you want to use and 175/46 single sleeve layer is the lowest you want. Both work very well but the 250/46 dual layer works best. With mylar, there are 2 sides, one side beung conductive, the other side not. You want the conductive side away from the coil windings. You can verify which side is which using your ohm meter... Also, a bundle wound solid wire coil is not always bad. Out of over a dozen detectors built, a few of them work best with single strand copper wire 24 to 26 awg. It all depends on the tuning of the detector. If your building it without a scope, good luck getting any kind of decent depth or sensitivity. You need to fine tune using a scope for best performance, especially your tx pulse width and delay widths along with tuning for best damping resistor. Also, shielding a coil in most instances, mono especially, you will lose depth and sensitivity.
Detec, did you use a damping resistor with this basket coil at all? I have that same PI kit and am looking for the best coil that is easier to make, i have made a simple mono coil. with that i only get about 2" in a air test. I think the basket coil is the simplest way to go without going with a DD coil. I want to start with something simple to use the detector before i start trying to make if more efficient
nice video, ive always wrapped my mono coil in silver foil and insulated in electrical tape, and found it slightly gives greater depth, when testing on the surf pi. i wonder, if wrapping more copper around the coil, which you have demonstrated gives greater depth, but what if you increased a few more wrappings, say another 2 wrappings, will it make any difference or better the depth even more? cheers

Would it be possible that the extra wrapping simply made the coil tighter hens, giving it better inductance ?

Im goin to try the extra turns on the larger basket coil Im making now.
The new bigger coil I made is even better than the smaller version. But wouldnt work well with the extra winding.
Did you wrap that 2nd winding parallel to the base coil or sort of at right angles to it?
