As a former Gamestop employee, I used to order the preowned controllers to be shipped to my store from the warehouse. This would let me check the quality and functionality of the controllers before they were sold to people. It made for a pretty easy avenue of getting a new or extra controller for anyone in my local smash scene. If you go into Gamestop looking for one be sure to ask to see ALL of the controllers! Usually the employees will be chill enough if it isn't super busy. They used to only be around $15 too since they were preowned. Not sure how much they are now.
Damn the video drags on for much too long. I feel like you should have been right to the point: If you don't already have one from the Gamecube days / your friends don't have any they're willing to give up, buy it online. Don't get any 3rd party controllers That should save you 10 minutes
Counter point for curious readers: There are some good details here about *how* to see if you're getting what you want via online shopping. Definitely good to know when controllers are continually increasing in price, and its a bummer to shell out for a controller only to have to buy another one to get all the official parts.
He mentions the cord length on 3rd party controllers being half the length they should be, but original controllers have half length cords of newer models as well. Just wanted to put that out there.
good point! original controller cords are still much longer than the 3rd party controller's though (referencing the 'generic' ones that copy the look of real Gamecube controllers)
3rd party controllers are also smaller, motherboard is smaller, the buttons feel cheaper, the shell is smaller and if you open them up, you can tell the original and fake one apart. Outside the obvious sign is the logo, but in case someone replicates the logo of the gamecube for the controller, i would suggest to invest on nintendo screw drivers, they're cheap...and when you buy anything of ebay or Amazon or even gamestop, open them up to varify their authenticity.
I got a GC Controller from controller chaos and it's super sweet. Custom paints and all. I recommend. Has shield drops and semi consistent dash backs. A bit expensive though.
Not sure how far north flea markets go, but I'm in south Texas and found a black Smash 4 and an OG black Nintendo Gamecube branded controller at a nicer flea market that we have down here and got the both for like 30.. I WAS a little nervous taking them home wondering if they;d work, but they felt good at the shop. I t was a chance I took and it worked out so your mileage may vary. If applicable in your area, flea markets guys.

With flea markets it is indeed all about luck, the two I found were diamonds in the rough amongst a slew of third parties and broken ones. There was an orange one but they wanted like 40 for it and I didnt want an orange one. Luck will also be on your side if the people selling dont know how much what they have is worth
I found this to be a head-scratching comment. Flea markets are everywhere, it's not a South Texas thing lol. Got a $5 clone for +$40 dollars on Amazon under the officially licensed smash controller category. I got my money back, but not the month of my fucking time. Be careful.

It's good but you may need to shave the plastic around the triggers or replace the case. The new cases are prone to having the L and R triggers get caught on them.
Oh. My. Gosh. This is exactly the video I have been looking for. I've had to settle for the just press play controllers for about two months now. The first one had its joystick break and the second one's joystick is incredibly bad. I knew they were bad but didn't want to blow 60-70 dollars on a controller that wasn't guaranteed to be fully new. I am going to continue my search now because I now know where to look. This video was a god send.
Can you make a video on how to learn/start modding your controller if you have not already made one? I want to mod a few of my controllers that I have to give to a few friends.
FoUrSide sure! what did you have in mind? like in terms of specifics, i made a tutorial of how to open controllers and generally take it apart and put it back together but if there's something youd want to see in depth id be happy to make it. however in terms of "modding" for example i cant do like notches or super advanced stuff :(
zenith SSBM in specifics I would like to know how/where to find buttons/backs of a GC controller for a decent price. I checked out the beavercontroller website, but I can not afford the the aesthetic changes I wanted. It would be sick if you could make a vid on that for me and everyone that's is interested in starting to do aesthetic changes to there controllers on a budget, if you have the time.
hmm unfortunately any changes aesthetic or function costs a pretty penny, at least right now :( i wish that wasnt the case but companies hopefully will come into the controller market and competition will drive the price now because for example, custom buttons will cost around $20. the cheaper alternative is painting them but i have never done that personally and i also do not recommend that since it can cause your buttons to stick. if you saw my video on custom buttons, those (as far as i know) are around the cheapest options available at the moment. i cant even personally afford like a paint job on my controllers if i wanted to rn which is why my main controller just has that Pachimari sticker on it lol
I'm pretty sure, but there are no videos showcasing it yet so we cant be sure. Original Gamecube controllers already work on switch with help from an adapter, including the adapter nintendo released for the Wii U, and the controllers they released a couple years ago worked on original the gamecube. I dont see why they would stop. Also I believe the amazon product page features an image of the same gamecube wire that they've used since the gamecube launch
If you're looking for some rare colors for more reasonable prices, I would recommend looking around rakuten or japanese yahoo auctions and then using a Japan proxy shipping service. I was able to get my emerald blue controller for around $35 total through using japanese yahoo auctions as well as a proxy service.
I wouldn't be so quick to jump the gun and blame him... I tried a clear controller once and have to say, nada. A solid colored, official GC controller is basically the most solid and safe choice.
There is a problem Official GC controller's cost twice as wii. (Hey 1 dolar equals 7 bucks in my country plus+%20 tax and another %20 tax + about 13 bucks). Ebay is pain to use because shipping from America makes it harder. Help
I have the Smash 4 controllers (normal black and Japan-only white) as well as 3 black originals. I like the Smash controllers because the cords are significantly longer and the Smash logo just looks cool on them.
Amazon just put up the pre order for Official Smash Ultimate edition gamecube controllers they are $30 PLEASE BUY THEM NOW or pay the highly gouged prices a year down from now
I've heard some controllers are better for different things like shield dropping and pivots. What's that all about? Is that something you can mod any controller to do? If so, how?
i remember when i was younger having gc controller by madcat i think and they were always glitching like i had to reconect them few times while playing but i also had a ntdo one that worked and still work perfectly
Wished i stumbled upon this video earlier. Got a 3rd party controller off of amazon and it started drifting in 2 hours. After that i saw your channel and this video and got a used official controller from amazon for 20 bucks. It feels much better
It is a huge "your location may vary" but I get 90 percent of my controllers for any system at goodwills/yard sales. it takes some luck, but getting, sometimes up to 4 official ones at a time for 2-5 bucks each, is pretty solid.
Most of the official Nintendo controllers I've had I purchased from flea markets ranging from $8-16. If there is a flea market near you, it is definitely worth checking out. Arrive early in the morning to look for any controllers before anyone else takes them. Usually the vendors who sell these controllers don't know how much they are really worth. Some vendors who sell consoles, controllers and games catch on to the high demand and end up buying all the controllers they can find and resell them for double the price. Any decent controller for under $15 is a steal. The one I use now cost me $8 and was covered in dust and grime. Cleaned it up nicely and it works great. Also, if you see any official controllers that aren't the standard black, silver, indigo color (so any orange, emerald, clear, etc.) then buy it even if it feels broken. Other smashers will pay a fair price just for the shell.
i got a seccond hand controller at gamestop but since i don't live in the US i had to test it in colombia and a trigger broke and i cant return it but since i am playng PM and Brawl in pm i can disable that trigger and play ignoring the right trigger
If youre in the canada toronto pickering area, theres a fantastic used games store called we got gamez, which offers multiple colours of gc controllers from 40-50 cad, while also letting you try the controllers out on a melee setup before you buy
Really really helped, thank you so much, been using friends GCs at my school club and I just wanted to always own one for the club, and than you again for the notice of GameStop controllers hahaha
On the topic of 3rd Party being the worst... That statement has yet to be proven wrong. As someone who has casually played Melee/Brawl and semi-competitive Sm4sh, I have tried 3rd party twice. Those controllers will wear out VERY quickly and usually you'll enjoy about a month's worth of play time with them before the problems get REALLY bad with them (i.e. the buttons requiring you to push down with your thumb all the way just to get a response, big dead zone, etc.) On the flip side, the Official controllers always seem to be the most well-made. They are very responsive, and for the most part get the job done (even if it isn't brand-spanking new). They last for literal YEARS, and even then they manage to operate like normal. Some recommendations I can make are the Official Super Smash Bros 4 white controller (with the Sm4sh emblem on it) and the OG Gamecube controllers being sold on Amazon and E-Bay. Gamestop is "Okay" if you decide to try a Used Official (But I honestly wouldn't rely on it)... The wire length is usually MUCH greater on the official controllers than the knock-offs (So try to avoid the short ones). And remember... NEVER settle with Wireless.
I use the smash 4 controller for both melee and wii u. My personal preference is that the white one is better, i dont know if there is a difference but i felt that the white one was way more crisp and lasts longer
ive bought multiple WiiU smash edition gamecube controlers from gamestop, and almost all have broken with the analog stick not responding properly. I have accidently dropped the controllers a few times, but i doubt that alone would cause it to break so easily, considering my ps4 controller has been dropped before and still working fine. Are gc controllers just more fragile, or is this the fault of gamestop controllers, and i should be looking in a different place for them?
wavebirds are great controllers! but for competitive smash i would not recommend simply due to a small amount of lag they have. they are also banned from most tournaments as far as i know due to the interference they can cause
So basically, only buy the controllers that have the Nintendo GameCube logo in the front? I was looking @ some controllers with the SSBM logo in the front, but I’m not sure if those also suck.
ahh i lost it long ago since i swapped textures on a different pc but i remember getting them off of smashboards! should be in the texture and skin archive
What about wavebird wireless controllers? A guy brought one to a local smash 4 tourney and when I asked him he said it was fine. Is there any extra input delay or something? They are generally cheaper online from what I can tell.
PlaceholderName its "fine" but i heard Its about as fine as playing on a laggy tv. Most people wont notice it but if youre going for frame tight inputs, you probably wont like it. I never played on one - this is what ive heard. I also hear they arnt allowed at a lot of tournaments and especially majors because there are only 4 channels and it would cause interference if everyone was playing on one
What r ur opinions on hydra gamecube controllers? I been using them for months now, and results are fairly good. My only complaint on the is there longevity (had to replace my 1st after 3-4 months).
I spent around $15 on new thumbstick caps and a triwig screwdriver. I bought some used platinum controllers with no rubber padding on the thumbsticks so i popped them open and cleaned out the plastic cases, and replaced the thumbstick caps on them.
I need an answer fast (pls) I was going to get a battlebeaver custom gamecube controller with like $200 but since I have 0 experience with gamecube controllers I decided to get a knock off controller for short term with an adapter. Is it a good idea ? If no what do you recommend ? N.B.: I live in Tunisia (No access to amazon or even a nintendo store)
I know this might sound weird, but if you're buying a used GameCube controller, buying on on GameStop's online store is great. GameCube controllers on eBay go around $20-$25, and if occasionally you can pick one up on GameStop's webstie for $15 and $13 if you are part of some rewards program. I bought 4 for $50 and all of them look brand new and they come in a bag to hold your controller in
for casual theyre great! but for competitive they have a slight bit of lag you wont like if youre playing "higher" level melee. they are also not allowed at most locals and basically all bigger tournaments (channels from the receiver will interfere) otherwise theyre great controllers for regular gaming!
Please be aware that Nintendo just released updated GameCube controllers specifically for SSBU on 2 November, and that they are far cheaper but of equal quality to the original controllers.
I got a Gamecube controller from gamestop for Brawl and some gamecube games. I bought it about a month ago. Right away I noticed that When I input left or right, sometimes it would keep going in that direction. I was like ok, well that's fine because i jut have to put it into neutral position every time. Then the other day I was playing Mario Party 2 on wii vc and my wii fell down with the gamecube controller plugged in. It completely messed it up. Not only did I have my original problem, but I couldn't go up or scroll up. When I did move up it went very slowly. The neutral position sometimes had me going up or down. Afterwards I played brawl and I could barely move left, and I just automatically ran off to the right and killed myself. I wonder if the deadzones are messed up? I might just have to take out the control stick and put it back in. Also it's only the two sticks, not any buttons. (Although once I was playing Metroid Prime and I couldn't hit the R button) Thank you for listening to my long story.
oh both sticks have the same problem? thats pretty weird hmm originally when i was reading i thought you just accidentally calibrated it wrong (like holding the stick left or right as its starting can cause that analog value to be set as (0,0) making your controller drift a certain direction - i believe its called 'ghosting?') but if its both that sounds way more complex especially after it fell. might be an error with the Wii's controller input reading? try plugging into a different port and see if that helps. is the controller an official Nintendo made controller?
Are there any good controllers with turbo buttons, I don’t plan on going to any tournaments but I wanna get into competitive smash and is amazon acceptable to buy from?
Ebay, just never get any 3rd parties. Been through 4-5 of those and they all had a defect out of the box, like L or R buttons and c-stick not working. Used official controllers the best. Usually looking towards Japan as they offer free shipping.
In the state I live in, every weekend theres always this big area full of people selling old stuff there (I dont know what its called in English but in spanish we call it the pulga) and theres always like 3 to 6 stands that sell gamecube accessories and are official
There really isnt a great "playing ___ character in Ultimate translating to playing ___ character in Melee" I would heavily recommend trying out some high tiers and seeing what feels fun! (Or looks fun.) As said here Sheik is great to start with and Marth would probably make a lot of sense to you coming from Cloud
Mr.Video as long as its comfortable its good! im not sure of signs of decay besides control stick loosening, maybe causing missed inputs, etc. but some prefer loose control sticks, some prefer tight control sticks. personally i cant use loose control sticks so when it gets too loose i gotta get a new one
I Just bought a hori battle pad for Nintendo switch, and Im using it on dolphin(or slippi), and the wavedash does not feel right. I tested right away on original gamecube with gamecube controlller and the wavedashes were no problem
i have one too! i also thought they were decent and they are for like regular casual gaming on say Dolphin, but i dont think they come even close to a good official controller

Wished i stumbled upon this video earlier. Got a 3rd party controller off of amazon and it started drifting in 2 hours. After that i saw your channel and this video and got a used official controller from amazon for 20 bucks. It feels much better
damn, sorry to hear. at least you have a proper controller now!
I got one of mine at a thrift store for $2
wow no kidding? and the official one? thats a hell of a deal!
Yep they don't get gaming tech and how valuable. They sold a special edition Wii with two games for $20
Wow, i already thought that I have made a great deal: 30€ for 2 almost new original controller
It is a huge "your location may vary" but I get 90 percent of my controllers for any system at goodwills/yard sales. it takes some luck, but getting, sometimes up to 4 official ones at a time for 2-5 bucks each, is pretty solid.
Brendex ehhhhhhwtf
"Let's say you don't have any friends." Wow... Do you need to talk?
Wow. I never knew my dusty old Gamecube controller is more reliable than those other controllers. Tnx for the video man!
Can you make a video on how and where to find a good quality gamecube controller adapter for pc? BTW nice video
sure man! on the way
Thanks, looking forward to it
id recommend getting the mayflash adapter off of like amazon. only like $15 and im happy with my purchase
Spencer c it also works for the switch, which i think is pretty cool
The official ones are better actually. The mayflash ones have been known to drop inputs or stop working in certain ports.
Other smashers will pay a fair price just for the shell.
one word: editing. you need to cut down the amount of stuff you say in videos. there's good information hidden within rambling
yea its def the biggest thing i am going to work on for these informational style videos!
So if I wanted a cheap option to replace gamecube buttons, I could buy 3rd party ones to replace the worn out 1st party ones?
I order a game cube controller on amazon on original not a third party one
SamSmb3 good choice👍🏼 for how much?
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002Y5180/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
SamSmb3 is it good? I am looking to buy a controller aswell so i just wanted to know
SamSmb3 h
It works ? I also bought a platinum GameCube controller on Amazon
i got a seccond hand controller at gamestop but since i don't live in the US i had to test it in colombia and a trigger broke and i cant return it but since i am playng PM and Brawl in pm i can disable that trigger and play ignoring the right trigger
Is it just me or are smash 4 controller 100$?
Jun Zebra in a mall I go to they sell all kind of stuff and a smash 4 GameCube controller is $30
lucky
online the prices are ridiculous now. def go used
zenith SSBM for real
Lol yep, too expensive.
My controller is official, but my A button isn’t exactly clicky. Is that something to worry about?
5:15 feelsbadman
Great video, i thought you were going to start dropping underground websites i didn't know of, but for a beginner this is a really good vid.
8:35 that's not safe
If youre in the canada toronto pickering area, theres a fantastic used games store called we got gamez, which offers multiple colours of gc controllers from 40-50 cad, while also letting you try the controllers out on a melee setup before you buy
Buy from goomy
Buy from TechKen
what is worts learning in a gc usb controler or in a generic pc control (shape like a play station controll)? because im using the second one xd
Really really helped, thank you so much, been using friends GCs at my school club and I just wanted to always own one for the club, and than you again for the notice of GameStop controllers hahaha
Controller chaos vs Multi shine designs. What do you guys think is better?
What is the chance that if I buy on eBay it will arrive with cheap replacement sticks?
Should I just use the a game cube controller adapter for playing on PC, it wont cause any input lag will it?
On the topic of 3rd Party being the worst... That statement has yet to be proven wrong.
As someone who has casually played Melee/Brawl and semi-competitive Sm4sh, I have tried 3rd party twice. Those controllers will wear out VERY quickly and usually you'll enjoy about a month's worth of play time with them before the problems get REALLY bad with them (i.e. the buttons requiring you to push down with your thumb all the way just to get a response, big dead zone, etc.)
On the flip side, the Official controllers always seem to be the most well-made.
What are your thoughts on the wave bird controllers?
Are you able to connect the switch GameCube controller for wii and play GameCube games on wii using that controller?
The ultimate GameCube controller will work on a Wii or GameCube
RealDovahkiin okay thanks
I have a wireless Wave Bird GameCube controller is it any good @zenith SSMB?
wavebirds are great controllers! but for competitive smash i would not recommend simply due to a small amount of lag they have. they are also banned from most tournaments as far as i know due to the interference they can cause
So basically, only buy the controllers that have the Nintendo GameCube logo in the front? I was looking @ some controllers with the SSBM logo in the front, but I’m not sure if those also suck.
hey, can you upload the files for the modded marth swing color? (that black-purple) and how do you add the purple spike effect??
ahh i lost it long ago since i swapped textures on a different pc but i remember getting them off of smashboards! should be in the texture and skin archive
How bad are the knock offs that look exactly like the normal ones cuz I might be getting one
What about for switch? They have officially licensed controllers for it.
What r ur opinions on hydra gamecube controllers? I been using them for months now, and results are fairly good. My only complaint on the is there longevity (had to replace my 1st after 3-4 months).
not good, like you said they break super quickly. not only that but they have huge deadzones and a generally cheap feel
How does the cpu move like that?
Its the 20XX melee training pack
I spent around $15 on new thumbstick caps and a triwig screwdriver. I bought some used platinum controllers with no rubber padding on the thumbsticks so i popped them open and cleaned out the plastic cases, and replaced the thumbstick caps on them.
I need an answer fast (pls)
I was going to get a battlebeaver custom gamecube controller with like $200 but since I have 0 experience with gamecube controllers I decided to get a knock off controller for short term with an adapter.
I bought 4 for $50 and all of them look brand new and they come in a bag to hold your controller in
im looking for a white japanese gamecube under 100 bucks where should i go?
I just found an emerald blue originals gamecube controller for 27€
(30$)
Is it good? All the other ones are around 50€
(55,7)
I bought a White official GameCube Controller that is almost brand new for $80, is that a good deal?
Hey bro, I have a question: where did you get that fire emblem logo on your controller? And can I get one with the Persona 5 (Joker) logo?
just slap a sticker on the controller lol
do you know where you could customize your own controller like upload you own jpegs or pngs on it thx
one of the painters in the gamecube controller discord could probably hook you up!
Would you recommend a wavebird controller for smash?
for casual theyre great! but for competitive they have a slight bit of lag you wont like if youre playing "higher" level melee. they are also not allowed at most locals and basically all bigger tournaments (channels from the receiver will interfere) otherwise theyre great controllers for regular gaming!
Should I buy a Retro-Bit GameCube Classic Controller or Cirka GameCube Controller?
no no no no no no no no no! especially not the cirka
How does he change the color of falcos shine and laser?
Please be aware that Nintendo just released updated GameCube controllers specifically for SSBU on 2 November, and that they are far cheaper but of equal quality to the original controllers.
would they be compatible with the gamecube console? as in do they have the same port
PakkiNakki yes
Im happy i have found untested gamecube controllers and they all work i love that
I got a Gamecube controller from gamestop for Brawl and some gamecube games.
Are there any good controllers with turbo buttons, I don’t plan on going to any tournaments but I wanna get into competitive smash and is amazon acceptable to buy from?
no real 'good' controllers have turbo buttons as far as I know. sorry :(
zenith SSBM thank you, I found an original Nintendo controller that I’m getting and OMG SENPAI NOTICED ME
What’s with the different color shines and stuff
Ebay, just never get any 3rd parties. Been through 4-5 of those and they all had a defect out of the box, like L or R buttons and c-stick not working. Used official controllers the best. Usually looking towards Japan as they offer free shipping.
In the state I live in, every weekend theres always this big area full of people selling old stuff there (I dont know what its called in English but in spanish we call it the pulga) and theres always like 3 to 6 stands that sell gamecube accessories and are official
My friend gave me his GameCube controller official controller so glad I have one really happy
Zenith, I want to get melee, I main cloud in sb ultimate so what character would fit that play style or should I be a fox/ falco main
i would say sheik is an easy character to get into for you...
@@chim4278 Good starter character as well as one of the most best characters when it comes to defense.
@@SMEARGLEX75 yeah and her tech is kinda easy to understand...
There really isnt a great "playing ___ character in Ultimate translating to playing ___ character in Melee"
I would heavily recommend trying out some high tiers and seeing what feels fun! (Or looks fun.) As said here Sheik is great to start with and Marth would probably make a lot of sense to you coming from Cloud
I love how interactive you Are with the coments
thanks man! i try my best to keep up :)
I have an original GameCube controller from 2001 and I don't know if I should upgrade, is there any signs to see if there's decay in the controller?
Mr.Video as long as its comfortable its good! im not sure of signs of decay besides control stick loosening, maybe causing missed inputs, etc. but some prefer loose control sticks, some prefer tight control sticks. personally i cant use loose control sticks so when it gets too loose i gotta get a new one
zenith SSBM Okay thank you for the advice
i payed about 30ish dollars for a mint wii u smash controller from a local shop. is that a good price that i payed for?
I've seen some people selling official controllers on amazon. Do you think I should buy an official used one off amazon?
Are 3rd party controllers ok for casual games like wind waker, sonic unleashed and brawl?
I personally dislike them for any game but their flaws are less noticeable in certain games. Melee not being one of them
I Just bought a hori battle pad for Nintendo switch, and Im using it on dolphin(or slippi), and the wavedash does not feel right. I tested right away on original gamecube with gamecube controlller and the wavedashes were no problem
what about retrolink controller? I have one and it seems to be pretty good, granted I haven't used an actual game cube one.
i have one too! i also thought they were decent and they are for like regular casual gaming on say Dolphin, but i dont think they come even close to a good official controller
