Good comment. I had to start again from scratch four times before I realized where I was making the same error. Which is really a good way to learn. Ended up understanding better exactly what each option actually did.
No1 Quick tip at 09:15 for beginners. Kindly take note so that you dont run into issues. Modifiers are applied only in Object Mode. You cant do that in Edit mode so you should take note. How to move from Edit mode to Object mode, you hit Tab or you go to the top left side of your screen below the Blender icon row, You see Edit mode, click it and then a drop down appears then you select object mode, Then you can go ahead and apply the modifier at the modifier panel. Stay blessed No.2 You might find out that when you click and drag down, Your icing still goes through the donut's body and I faced similar issue. The reason is that you didnt select the tip of the icing at the middle part (Vertexes) To get around this problem. Toggle to X Ray mode. This is at the top right conor of your viewport on top of the axis gizmo or XYZ axis indicator. You see 2 boxes, and 3 globes. choose the 2 boxes icon so you can see the vertexes and you would immediately notice that you didnt select the middle vertex or the tip of the icing.
I just want you to know that I am an art student in college, pursuing an animation degree. My Illustration teacher actually recommended I watch your tutorials and learn blender since I am ahead of the class. This is to help me make a pub scene for an animatic I am working on, so that I don't have to be fussing around with perspective in the drawing process. This is so clear and easy to follow! I hear about Blender being a nightmare, and maybe it has something to do with me being an art student in college, but I actually find this to be less intimidating than I ever thought it would be thanks to you!
Unlike many other tutorials that always either skip over crucial detail like how to even start editing the node, or always goes too slow and tells you each individual step like (move your mouse. Click on the left mouse button. Move away from the button.) etc, your ones are perfect. While some of the keybinds aren't the same as on my computer, a simple search easily fixes these problems. WIth the face project bit, if anyone else is having trouble "Project to individual elements" is a CHECKBOX now, diffrent from how it is in the video. Took me like 10m to figure out and hope this helps someone.
Thanks for another great tutorial! I have a few tips for people running into problems: 1. If the bottom edge of the icing is hidden inside the donut body, you can select the bottom edge to scale it up a little bit on x-y plane. 2. The key combintation to select more on my PC is control-numpad +, not control-+ 3. Some of my icing was clipped by donut body after I pulled down the bottom edge. I selected a vertex on icing, and used ALT-S with proximity editing to push it out to fix the clipping. I struggled a lot with the icing part in the previous version of this tutorial. This version is much better on a few details, I had far less trouble to follow along. Well done!
I've been doing Blender for more than 2 years now and this is the first time I watch a donut tutorial! I knew there's gonna be something that I didn't know about... thank you.
I consider myself a advanced Blender user. Yet i catch myself watching and doing these donut series. Because somehow he comes up with stuff that i never used before. Such as changing the inner crease in the solidify edge data. I've never played around with that, and now i can think of multiple situations when i wished i knew this earlier.
@Gorjester let's say that i'm using Blender for about 10 years. So, yeah, I won't consider myself a beginner anymore. But that doesn't mean that it's still fun to see what we can do with some of the new updates tools in beginner videos like this.
17:20 • Extrusion (follow this guide if you need help): • Make sure to change the order or move your "Subdivision" modifier, above the "Solidify". • Or alternatively (if the one above is not working for you): remove all your "Subdivision" modifiers. This fixed it for me. Blender version: 4.2.2 LTS (Windows 11 Home) That's it. Hope it helps you.
Honestly these got so much better over the years. For the first time I tried to create donut in blender 2.7 back in 2021, it was like THE first thing I tried to do in blender ever, and so many things were unclear and required searching for answers on the internet, this is just a smooth sail from start to finish so far, I love it and I know people who will open blender for the first time will love it too
@@mwah4rae Its all on getting used to the hotkeys TRUST ME there is a lot of try and error i started before with a different tutorial from another youtuber so i already knew a lot of of the hotkeys for what he wanted to do, and it still took me about half an hour, dont give up
right there with you!!! everything else was a piece of cake but the damn icing for some reason was the most difficult 😭 it actually took me a few days to finish this episode now I finally got the donut mastered icing too once I realized he was purposely messing up the icing model having us worried n scared 😂
For these ones, who don't have time to watch a whole video: 1:10 - Duplicating (Shift + D) (Right click to cancel) 2:12 - F2 to name object 3:03 - Toggle X-Ray 4:03 - ... 5:11 - New modifier 6:31 - Viewport 7:05 - Again proportional tool 7:43 - Snap tool 8:25 - Face project 9:40 - Adding more geometry 11:32 - Ctrl + [ + ] 12:23 - H and Alt + H to unhide 13:40 - Click Tap then holding G in edit mode to switch axis 15:49 - Adding another modifier 16:39 - Changing the settings of solidify 18:06 - Hit E to duplicate (Tap + D to draw)
Wow! The fact this experienced teacher goes through the steps slowly and little by little is really helpful. So excited to continue working on my donut!
in 9:45 if your "apply modifier" is greyed, make sure you temporarily switch to Object mode instead of Edit mode. It should work then (actually you can see it changing on Andrew's screen if you pay attention, which I didn't :) )

Man this is a throwback to see a new version, I was starting blender right when the last one was posted and it was the first tutorial I ever followed. Thanks for starting mine and many others Blender journeys Blender Guru!
It's a real pleasure to watch your tutorials because you really explain things in a beginner's way but still go into depth. Thank you for being such a good teacher.
I've never really been much for creating things or felt like i had an artistic bone in my body, but i got actual chills when i got to the end of this one and saw how my donut was coming together. This is so much fun i cant wait to learn more.
i have to say, as someone with adhd who can never sit throught any tutorial (like i always end up just trying to wing it or give up) youre an excellent teacher. youre kind, easy to follow, interesting i dont think ive ever in my life followed a tutorial with this many part from a to z. and graphic design is not even my passion at all, i just wanted to try to replicate those tiktoks i see of cubes and shapes breaking apart depending on their faces or resolution. now im like fully commited at making a donut and that is because youre really good at what youre doing
also if someone can tell me how to not how a noisy pixelated view when i use the viewport shading mode...like if i take a picture it looks fine, but other wise its super pixelated
I've been using Blender on and off since 2018 and I've done all your Donut tutorials so far. I've modeled other stuff, this admittedly DOES become basic, but the less button presses you have to learn, the more you see why even basic scenes look great :) There's a lot to learn even if you've done it before :)
8:09 to anyone having issues with the verticies not snapping correctly, I tinkered with it and seemingly fixed it. I will update this comment later to let you know 100%, but I’ll tell you for now; select “snap to” and choose “face nearest” under target selection I have it to “include edited”, “include non-edited”, and “exclude non-selectable”. I’m gonna continue with the rest of the tutorial to check out if it works properly. Edit: Seems to have worked for me :) I hope it helps someone else
@@thegoodally101 I think it has to do with the version of blender you're using; I started the tutorial yesterday and ran into the same problem but it was because I was using 2.91 blender lol
I don't think it helps xd but I think they changed it, have the option to click like he did it, If not, when you are in editing mode (viewing the vertices), at the top in the "second" menu section, there will be a section that will say face, try to "extrude individual faces", in addition to that, check again to have all the buttons that he has on, I spent minutes seeing why moving several vertices didn't work and then I realized that I was missing "proportional editing"
Good tutorial. Your lessons are prescious. About 18:49 ... For some reason I can't afford making a spheric drop of the icing: It makes a square shape drop not what it supposed to looks like in the video, when I slide the ridges while tapping E. It doesn't even following the liquid shape around the edges, it's geometrical. Can somebody please help me?
For those who are still having the issue with the icing going through the donut, I found a solution by clicking on the "Snap" menu and checking the "Project individual elements" box. I'm a beginner myself, so I don't fully understand how this checkbox works, but it did the trick for me. Good luck with your donut creations!
If there are ones still having problem even after this solution they may increase the thickness in the solidify at first if they did not. At least these two solved my problem and currently it works.
i believe thats the option that worked the same as how the "face" one did in the video, but they changed what it was called and gave something else the "face" name
No idea if they changed it yet again or what, but the option I found was "Snap Individual Elements to:" and selected "Face Project" and that did the trick for me!
For the selecting and hiding of the internals of the icing and adding and removing rings of vertices from the selection, make sure to use the number pad's + key, not the plus on the row with numbers below F12.
I started doing your Blender tutorial on a whim last week and had gotten most of the way through it when I got excited about Blender so I started watching your other videos and reading your blog only to find out that Blender 4.0 was coming out the next day, so now I'm thrilled to get to go through this brand new tutorial series with the new version! Thanks for doing what you do!
I was trying it with the older tutorial series not realising why the clipping issues kept happening. Retried the series twice before realizing i was in a newer version of blender. Finally got through with this part and feel so happy. Thank you for making this series so accesible!
I've been putting of learning blender (to any degree) for years, but I'm glad I started with this series, amazing quality. The pace is also great, not to slow or fluffy. Great work!
It's funny to be back to watching Blender videos. It was one of the first software packages I learned several years ago when I was starting my 3D journey. I didn't stick with it because I was told that Maya was necessary to get a job in the industry. So, I learned Maya. Then, I got my first 3D job, which is where I still work now, and come to find out that the department uses 3DS Max. So, I Iearned Max. Now, Blender has received exponentially more updates and improvements than Maya and Max and is accepted in the industry. I'm tired of paying a lot of money on software subscriptions and dealing with rigid/limited functionality. So, now I'm learning Blender again, but with great gratitude for such organized and clear tutorials. Thank you for making these great videos and putting them out there for everyone to benefit from!
@Wiifan5551 I work for Ashley furniture in their CGI department. The focus is mainly archviz content, so the models I make and QA are mostly high poly, but we also work with other folks to convert everything to low poly for AR/VR usage.
The control + Plus command he is referring to at the 12:00 mark is the plus that is on the numpad, not on number row (just had to point it out as I was stupid enough to be doing this and not know why I was zooming in and out).
There's something so cool about these videos. Like if you're struggling on something, you might get frustrated. But then you remember, you're just making a delicious donut.
Try Shrinkwrap modifier for the icing, in that way you don't need to apply Subdivision modifier and also if for some reason you want to do any change to the main donut the icing will follow
You made it to part 3, great job! The icing is one of the most fun parts of the donut-building process. If you are struggling to get the vertices on the drippy parts right, take a step back, breathe, and start over on the icing if you need to. There’s no rush, and they don’t need to look perfect. Just take your time. It’ll turn out great!
haha the way you speak sounds like you are talking to a mentally unstable person that will have a meltdown. but that was me when I did the donut tutorial in 2019.
@@joelt7869 Funny enough, I’m literally just pulling from previous experience working on these donuts. 😅 It’s fun stuff, but it really can feel a bit overwhelming for people just starting out. I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s felt this way. :)
4:05 , here when i try to do it its deleting my orginal mesh also that is the icing aswell as the donut is getting deleted ....does anybody knows the solution to this
I was having the same problem and realized my subdivision modifier was gone. I guess I closed it somehow. But adding it back made the extrusion drips look round instead of straight lines
I had the same problem, 2 steps that fixed mine 1) add subdivision and place the order below the solidifier 2) Set the Levels viewport of the subdivision to 2. He mentioned step 1 but I am not sure if step 2 is the best practice as he didn't do that, but that rounded my drip, I guess the drawback is it will increase the size of the mesh.
This was probably the best part, because it's so easy to mess things up. I had to go back about 4 times, was like an extra 20 mins but worth it because I understood how everything was working, got used to things, realized my mistakes & fixed things.
@@Lamis-j7c I had the same problem as u, heres the solution: 7:09 when he selects "Proportional Editing Objects" u can see that cicle right? So u probably cant see it in urs cuz its to expanded, try scrolling down with ur middle mouse button while in edit mode with that option activated until it appears, then only the vertices within the circle area will move. That sould solve ur problem
Coming back to this since I remember watching the 2016 version when I was 9 and never got to finish my donut properly.... I believe it's been way overdue. Thank you for the tutorials, this legendary donut will be in the history books!
Hiii 😁 , If you are having trouble creating a wavy edge (at 13:05) and you do not have a mouse or are having trouble with your mouse wheel, you may notice that moving vertices affects everything. This is because the Proportional Editing Influence radius has not been decreased, causing everything to move by default. To fix this, simply use the mouse wheel (the most optimal method) or press Page Up to increase and Page Down to decrease the radius. Once you have done this, you can shape the icing as desired .
This is my third time going through this tutorial series, since I keep making small mistakes that ruin the whole thing, which is entirely my fault. The only thing keeping me going through all this again is that he keeps making himself laugh. Great energy for a tutorial!
im sure youve heard this a lot but i just wanted to thank you so much for actually explaining WHY you do certain things, your tutorials are the only ones ive found that actually *teach*. wonderful
The only thing that has worked for me Edit Mode || Snap To Face Project - Snap with Closest - Target Selection, Toggle on; Active, Edited, Non-edited - Toggle on; Align Rotation to Target, Backface Culling, Project Individual Elements - Affect; Move Hope this works for whoever is looking for a solution to "snapping to face"
At 11:45 if Alt + Click doesn't work and you can't figure out why, go to preferences and disable the "Emulate 3 Button Mouse" option from Input menu, you might have left it on from the previous parts. (That's what I did and couldn't figure out why it doesn't work)
You are a saint, just picking up 3d stuff because its free and interesting. I have to say you make this feel so fun and a goal that can actually be reached.

When talking about applying the subdivision modifier at 09:15 it may be useful to note one detail: By doing so, you apply the modifier to the entire object *and* *then* *remove* *it* *from* *the* *set* *of* *all* *modifiers* . I was slightly confused that, after applying, it vanished from my view :)
for the mesh vertices selection around 4:00, as an alternative method, you can also alt-click a line to select a row and then shift-alt-click another line to select additional row(s)
I could not get snapping to work successfully, and after about 5 tries, I finally found what I had missed. see 8:30 options for the snap with options. If you do NOT have selected in blender what Blender Guru has selected/highlighted, snapping the icing to the donut will not work. hopefully, this will help somebody, and save some time. Great video, by the way. Thanks so much!

to avoid the problem at 09:15. Instead of applying the modifier, will increasing the resolution in the beginning do it? It seems to work for me...just want to make sure i wont face any problems in the future
The reason why you might not have to do the extra steps is because you have a different thickness, does yours say on the solidify thickness of 0.025 or 0.25? If it's .25 it is too thicc and that is why you don't have to do the extra steps

@@andriimarchuk8121 I got about halfway through this video before I realized I was using 2.92 instead of 4.0. I only realized cause the all components face snapping option wasn't there. Kind of cool how similar the UI was kept while adding new features

I gotta learn 3D for my studies and in class we work with cinema 4D. It's what the uni wants, so the prof has to do it, even though he says it blender is the future. I didn't quite see why I should learn with a program that's already outdated plus costs a lot for a student where money's tight. So me being me I took the hard way and was kinda on my own, due to classes being in a different program. I am so grateful for this series, thank you so much. I first tried to do stuff on my own and find it out via trial and error (which works just fine e.g. for lots graphic programs), but I was way too overwhelmed with everything. So the biggest thank you to you, this series has helped me so much already and I'm sure it will in the future as well 😃
Ideally using real donuts, picked up either at your local bakery or a grocery store. Not necessarily for practical reasons (although yes), but primarily so you have delicious chunks of frosted/glazed fried dough to munch on.
"Where we make sad looking donuts that we can not eat." Lol, made me giggle out loud. This tutorial series is so helpful to a beginner, thank you so much for this!!!
??? Question In this clip; (9:14 - 9:53), what does adding the (Subdivision) modifier vs keeping it how it was before clicking "Add" change? Was it inactive beforehand? I am a bit confused as to how this works, I might also be thinking about this but too much so there's probably a very simple explanation for it, but any help will be Appreciated!!
Nvm I think I figured it out. @15:48 -- For whatever reason, having that second "subdivion" modifier added, it then was able to make a difference when I changed the initial "solidify" modifier edge data.
First time ever using blender in my life. 30 and wanting to learn something new, something I have been wanting to learn for a very long time. my donut looks great so far and I feel excited, you make it so easy to learn and remember. thank you :')
If you find that the bottom of your icing mesh is hiding beneath the donut after editing a vertex, you can fix it by resnapping the entire outside bottom row of vertices to the face of the donut. You do this by Alt + Click a vertex on the bottom row which should select the entire ring. Then change your snapping to "Face nearest" once you edit it will snap to the closest face, which would by the outside of the donut on it's corresponding side. If you snap with "Face Project" it will take all the vertices and snap them towards the face you're looking at. Once you hit the edit button "G" everything will snap to the face accordingly and then you can left click to commit the snapping.
Thank you, I'll remember you till the next vid drop Thanks for helping I've been stuck from 12am and coz of you i can sleep early thank you just thank you (Even though it doesn't exactly create a desired wavy edge as the face snaps to the nearest) but still i just wanna sleeep😭
For people with on a laptop without a numberpad, you can click edit, then preferences, then under input, in keyboard, you can choose to emulate numberpad wich will let you do what he does at 12:14 without zooming in
When I duplicate the donut, the icing layer is a bit bigger than the donut and isn't z fighting/colliding, its causing me some issues and I'm not sure what to do. Any tips or solutions?
The snap menu and other tool mentioned in this are now literally just in the center of your screen instead of being on the right hand side. The menu works fine, however the actual snap function is not working as intended for me.

Stay blessed
No.2 You might find out that when you click and drag down, Your icing still goes through the donut's body and I faced similar issue. The reason is that you didnt select the tip of the icing at the middle part (Vertexes) To get around this problem. Toggle to X Ray mode. You see 2 boxes, and 3 globes. choose the 2 boxes icon so you can see the vertexes and you would immediately notice that you didnt select the middle vertex or the tip of the icing.

I've modeled other stuff, this admittedly DOES become basic, but the less button presses you have to learn, the more you see why even basic scenes look great :)
There's a lot to learn even if you've done it before :)

For those who are still having the issue with the icing going through the donut, I found a solution by clicking on the "Snap" menu and checking the "Project individual elements" box. I'm a beginner myself, so I don't fully understand how this checkbox works, but it did the trick for me. Good luck with your donut creations!
This literally solved my issue! Other people’s advice wasn’t working, this did the trick thankss 😅😅

Been cooking up my donut for the last two/three days and just got got through part 3. Thanks for your help my dude, wish me luck boys!
Great work!
It's like the seventh time i started this tutorial over the years, and it's still a pleasure listening. Thx for the great content.
I started out learning Maya in high school, but Blender is great because it's free lol
If I may ask, where do you work?
@Wiifan5551 I work for Ashley furniture in their CGI department. The focus is mainly archviz content, so the models I make and QA are mostly high poly, but we also work with other folks to convert everything to low poly for AR/VR usage.
The control + Plus command he is referring to at the 12:00 mark is the plus that is on the numpad, not on number row (just had to point it out as I was stupid enough to be doing this and not know why I was zooming in and out).
I was so confused as well, thank you so much
For those of you with laptops, it would be 'Ctrl, Fn, ?'

Thanks Man

Adjust to desired thickness
7.Next to the solidify modifier it will have a few blue boxes turn of the one that says edit mode when you hover over it- this will let you see the vertices hidden by the layer thickness
8.Turn on proportional editing in the top corner or press (O)
9.Snap the vertices to the doughnut press the magnet tool at the top or press (shift+tab)
10.Next to the snap tool change the snapping function from increments to (Face PROJECT) not just (face)
11.Enter object mode and click the drop down option near the (Solidify) modifier and click apply- this adds more faces to work with and create more detail
12.Select vertices press G and lower the slider wheel everything within the grey circle will be effected when you move the vertices
You can hide the inside bit of the mesh to avoid the doughnut snapping to the middle but thats a hassle bit if your interested its at 11:49 In his tutorial
