I was stationed in Germany (US Army) in 1982-83. This song and other Def Leppard songs were always being played on my Walkman portable cassette player :)
That was always my favorite out of all of them. For some reason it felt like Pyromania was just a little bit too over the top but I still liked the album too. High N' Dry was just a really solid album from beginning to end and it had so many great songs on it.
High N'Dry was great, don't get me wrong. But Pyromania was Def Leppard at their peak. One really needs to know the background on how the album was made, produced, and, of course, how it sold.
*During the "Hysteria Tour", lead singer, Joe Elliot would introduce this song as, "_ot so very long ago, there was a lady, by the name of 'Norma Jean'. She became a model and an actress. She changed her name to 'Marilyn Monroe'. And in 1983, we wrote a song about her...". And, in magazine interviews, he said it was about his boyhood crush on her. Then, much later, changed the meaning of the song to being about, "something you can't ever get your hands on". I still believe his original meaning. I made a couple of Marilyn Monroe tribute videos to "Photograph".*

Biss - this is 80's rock at it's finest. They called it "Pop Metal." RIP to rhythm guitarist and Def Leppard's main songwriter Steve Clark, who drank himself to death. They have never been the same since he passed.
Def Leppard is great with their harmonies, riffs, and just the vocals. There are many absolutely great Def Leppard songs. The band is great in concert. Play more Def Leppard.
Def Leppard has a pretty decent catalog of songs (Rock of Ages, Pour Some Sugar on Me, Armageddon, Animal). It is a band that also had its share of tragedy. The drummer lost his arm in a car accident. His bandmates elected to wait for him as he recovered and retrained himself to play the drums with one arm (as seen in later music videos). Years later, their lead guitarist drank himself to death. Arguably, a top ten eighties rock band.

That's because Mutt Lange made them do it over and over and over and over and over (getting annoyed yet?) and over and over again. Rick at one point threw his sticks at the control room out of frustration. Joe, who was pissed off as well, talked about taking a break and walked to the other studio next to them and watched David Coverdale nail his stuff in one take. Mutt was a militant on that album.

1st… I grew up on this type of music 80s hair metal good stuff Def Leppard was a good band! Bisscute, I don’t know if you know it or not, but the drummer when he was younger in the band still had a terrible car accident. He lost his arm and the band is such nice guys. They waited around for him and never replaced him as a drummer, he had a professional electronic drum kit made up so he could play with one arm.
excellent band, great song and a magnificent reaction as always Miss Bisscute❤❤❤, I just saw them live at their recent concert in Mexico and they still rock hard. next song to react from them Biss: Love Bites. 👍👍💯
Obsession can be quite a drug, and Def Leppard got the mood right about stalkers that fall in love with the image, and not the real person. Good reaction as always Bisscute. In addition, you are right women want real men, not a boy. The lyrics rhyme and that is all that matters.
Thank you for this. This album came out when I was in high school. I got to see this concert when they toured the album. For several years this was played in nearly all of the garage parties I went to. You might want to do a reaction from their previous album 'High and Dry'. Do 'Mirror Mirror'.
great song reaction biss! brings me good memories hearing this song, its a great song! def leppard one of my favs! love it! have a nice day good vibes and much love!

One of my favourite songs from Def Leppard. It might now be from a new cover vocalist called Biss. No they were a great band first time in ages listening to them just might have to pull up some more stuff from them.Loved your reaction❤
Have to say was one of the best concerts I had the pleasure of seeing . It was after the drummer had the accident and lost his arm . Have to admit even with one arm still a amazing drummer

The song came about after a picture of her was in a magazine they were looking at. I read a book about interview Phil Collen and he talked about how the song came about
Last year, on my 18th birthday, my dad and I traveled all the way from Ankeny, Iowa to Omaha, Nebraska to see Def Leppard in concert. They were co-headlining with Motley Crue, and Alice Cooper was the opening act
I saw def leppard in Peoria, Illinois in 1997....they co headlined with Dokken. That show rocked! Also saw them in Des Moines, Iowa around 06 or 07....they came alone and played a 3.5 hr set. Ok they had some local kid with a guitar and whiny voice play a 45 minute set to open but nobody famous.
Back in the 80s if you were in high school and couldn't find a girlfriend you could just listen to a heavy metal band and they would show up in your bed room with a bunch of groupies to make your high school crush jealous. It was win win.
Def Leppard was a very cool band back in the day the tarragon I see in some of the comments people leave suggestions of songs that maybe you could react to they are good suggestions anybody who was a teenager or her listen to rock and roll radio FM radio would know this song have a great day Biss❤
It was 1983, I was 13 years old and it was mandatory to own a Pyromania T shirt! Photograph received non-stop airplay on my local radio station. Biss you are a silly goose and I love your reactions!
Saw them - and this track - live, on the Pyromania Tour, June 1983 the day after I graduated High School. You have no idea Biss, how big this band was - this song was - that year. Pyromania was a great record. Also, the "Fantasy" theme in this track was popular too. At the same time, Triumph had a song called "World of Fantasy" and Aldo Nova had a song called "Fantasy". All unrelated, but an interesting coincidence. You can catch Triumph's World of Fantasy at the US 83 Festival - the same show that you've reacted to the other two Triumph songs you've seen. I'm biased having been a late teen - early 20's dude during that time, but the 80's will always be the best era for rock to me.
Oh, snap! Ha! I see I'm not the first to say this, but I just noticed that Rick Allen still has both of his arms in this one. Can't remember if this has come up before, and others have just said, but the drummer Rick Allen was in a car crash, maybe a year or two after this, and lost his left arm, but stayed with the band and developed a way to keep playing with one arm.
What I didn't appreciate in this song until I got older and listened to more bands that preceded me was how, in one lyric, they managed to pay homage to two predecessors. The chorus opens with "Look what you've done to the rock'n'roll clown." On the first level, it's a reference to a 1972 hit by the band Slade, which was a huge influence on Def Leppard and other bands of the '80s, called "Look Wot You Dun." But in addition, that lyric is a direct pull from the opening line to a 1974 song by David Essex called "Stardust," which was the title theme of a movie he starred in that year about the rise and fall of a rock star. I think it's readily available to watch where you are, but it's harder to see in America; I had to import a UK BluRay to rewatch it.
"Pyromania" my first cassette too, although I may have purchased "Back In Black" at the same time (must have been rich, lol). I would listen to 9 songs straight through but often skip "Photograph". A bit too played out on the radio, and a little too poppy. Didn't quite go with the hard rock edge of some of the other songs. "Die Hard to the Hunter" was my favorite.
Def Leppard is one band that I wish I have seen live. This song is an absolute banger. I recommend Let's Get Rocked, Animal, and Run Riot. Great reaction Biss!! ❤🔥🔥👏
This song takes me back to being the outsider in high school (late 90s-early 2000s) because I listened to nothing but 80s rock and metal 😂 I did a presentation for one of my master's program college classes recently where I talked about parasocial relationships. It's something that I never really knew about before, or at least that it had a name and that people studied them for research.
Produced by Mutt Lange. Written by him, Joe Elliott , the late Steve Clark, Pete Willis and Rick Savage. Keyboards by Thomas Dolby. Written in 1983. Lange and Dolby were hired by Foreigner in 1981 and performed in the album 4. The next year, Thomas Dolby sang She Blinded Me with Science. Mutt Lange sang backing vocals. In 1984 (40 years ago 🎂) Lange and The Cars 🚗 produced the album Heartbeat City. In the same year, Lange wrote 1 song with Billy Ocean and Keith Diamond. Suggested videos 📹: 1 Def Leppard performs Animal 2 Billy Ocean sings Loverboy 3 The Cars perform Hello Again 4 Loverboy performs Lovin Every Minute of It
Marilyn Monroe was killed by government operatives but it was covered up as a drug overdose. Sad, but it was back when boinking the President and raising a stink about it was not a very good idea. This song was on a remarkable album, so many great songs. I remember one day when my middle daughter was only a year-and-a-half old and was waddling through the living room. MTV was on and "POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME" was playing. She stared at it for a moment, went over to the remote and somehow knew which button to poke to crank it up. Then she stood in front of the TV, just a few feet away, and started dancing. Mostly, her dancing was just bouncing up and down and occasionally stomping a foot, but it was all in time with the music. Now, every time I hear a Def Leppard song from that album, it takes me back to Toni's first dance.
As a rock band from the heyday of music videos in the 80's, Def Leppard is one of my favorite bands. You should also check out this group that had hits during the same era! "RATT - Round And Round"
For me, I think this is their best song. It’s really a fun one to sing along to. And I think this song is, definitely, about an unhealthy obsession… so, you’d better becareful Bissute, this song could, potentially, be about you… 😂😂 No! But, seriously, your mom is right, there are a lot of crazies out there! So becareful…. “Where is the cowbell?!” 😂😂😂 Best wishes! And God bless! Keep the reactions coming 😉
That album tour was my first concert. Never paid enough attention to the lyrics to realize what they meant. I thought it was a relationship with long periods of separation, which is why I was motivated to listen to this song. I was just looking at my gf's photograph, can't wait till friday ... lol.
Useless facts: This video was the first winner of MTV's Friday Night Video Fights and went on to win for another 5 weeks. This was such a huge part of the beating heart and soul of early MTV.
Hi, Biss! I was looking through your old reactions, and wondering if you've ever heard of a group called Blood, Sweat and Tears from back in the 60's/70's? if not, I think you might really enjoy them. They had a big, brassy jazzy/blues/rock sound with some really interesting arrangements. Excellent musicians all around. God Bless The Child would be a good first listen if you're interested and have the time. Take care! 😊
This is one of those "enjoying summer in the 80s" songs. Speedboat optional.😁 If you'd like something with similar vibes (and less serious subject matter), I'd suggest 'Turn up the Radio' by Autograph, and 'Hold on Loosely' by .38 Special.
Joe Elliott (vocals) of Def Leppard wrote 'Photograph' in 1982 (released in 1983 from their 3rd album 'Pyromania') about obsessing over a poster of Marilyn Monroe, who was considered the 'ultimate beauty' ... a pin-up fantasy woman for many boys. The music video itself was based on the many rumors & speculation that circled in the press about Marilyn Monroe's death... She had numerous marriages and affairs (including w/ President JFK Jr.) and many believe she was murdered. We now know that she had a bad drug habit after her career started to wane as she got older. She was found dead in 1962 at age 36... Toxicology found that she had OD'd on barbiturates and no foul play was suspected. Women even obsessed over Marilyn Monroe - late Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith said she believed that Marilyn was her 'real' mom (even though Anna was born in 1967)... but she also died the same way as her idol - she OD'd on prescription drugs in 2007.
???? In the states pyromania was their second album. On through the night being the first album released here. Then pyro, hysteria, ect ect.......what album am I missing?
Whenever I listen to this song I always think of Loves lost irl not of obsessing over a celebrity or someone in media. That's what it means to me. I think it's totally rad.
This was Def Leppards breakout hit. You may have noticed that the drummer had both arms in this photograph (video). Yes, it's,s about obsession from afar. I know you would understand ❤😊. Marry me Bisscute 😅! React to their song Foolin' next. Thanks ❤.
Pyromania is such a killer album. The production and sound are just fantastic.

back when the drummer still had both arms, early video. It is amazing how well he did with just 1 arm later on
Def Leppard is one band that I wish I have seen live. This song is an absolute banger. I recommend Let's Get Rocked, Animal, and Run Riot. Great reaction Biss!! ❤🔥🔥👏
This song takes me back to being the outsider in high school (late 90s-early 2000s) because I listened to nothing but 80s rock and metal 😂
I did a presentation for one of my master's program college classes recently where I talked about parasocial relationships. It's something that I never really knew about before, or at least that it had a name and that people studied them for research.
Hell yes!
You gotta do the SNL skit "MORE COWBELL"😂🤣😂
I gotta FEAVA!! And the only cure is more COWBELL!!
Not many bands still rockin today like Def Leppard still do! 😎
“Why is everyone asking you to marry them?”
It’s the abs.

Exactly! Stop and think guys, if she is what you think she is, why do you think she still single? Something is not right
About time ❤
Marilyn Monroe was killed by government operatives but it was covered up as a drug overdose.
Or, and just hear me out here....she had a lot of problems and just OD'd.
Conspiracy theories aside, that's a great memory!
@@davidward2651 It sure is, David. Thanks for taking the time to comment. 😎
As a rock band from the heyday of music videos in the 80's, Def Leppard is one of my favorite bands.
You should also check out this group that had hits during the same era!
"RATT - Round And Round"
For me, I think this is their best song. It’s really a fun one to sing along to.
And I think this song is, definitely, about an unhealthy obsession… so, you’d better becareful Bissute, this song could, potentially, be about you… 😂😂
No! But, seriously, your mom is right, there are a lot of crazies out there! So becareful….
“Where is the cowbell?!” 😂😂😂
Best wishes!
Take care! 😊
That whole album rocked. I think it was thier best album...... beautiful as always bisscute
the drummer when he has his two arms =), early 80's
Another great song by Def Leppard called "love bites" if you're interested and this was they first started also the drummer Rick Allen had both arms
Good song... was HUGE when it first came out. It took over MTV. Great guitar sounds. It's a great mix, IMO.
thanks for reaction, thanks for listing videos on music patreon
This is one of those "enjoying summer in the 80s" songs. Speedboat optional.😁
If you'd like something with similar vibes (and less serious subject matter), I'd suggest 'Turn up the Radio' by Autograph, and 'Hold on Loosely' by .38 Special.
@@acehigh79 "High n' dry" (1981) - 2nd album, first produced by Mutt Lange.
@sumonjamal1653 aye shit my bad lol. That's one of my favorite albums too! Brain fart
'Animal' is, in my opinion, their best song.
Thanks ❤.
