When Guitarist Steve Stevens does the ray gun sound in that performance, he holds a battery powered toy gun right by the guitars pick-up . Maybe the toys sound is generated by magnetics (?) causing the guitar to pick up the sound (?) It's worth checking out just to see that , plus Miley actually kills it in that duet performance with Billy .

It was just part of the kick-ass nature of that song when it came out, and we all loved it! Remember, the 70s-80's was the birth of "electronic music" with synthesizers becoming HUGE in most every band during the time, and that is why so much music from the 80's is soooo good....because all of the bands were constantly experimenting with new sounds and ways of making music. That ray gun was just one of those many experiments that worked fantastically! None of us who lived during that time will ever be able to sit down when this song plays!

BUT!!!!: We forget often, this record, is not a live record like they show on the video. It is a Studio Recording Song and after they made the video. So in the studio you can more go on details with guitar sounds instead on stage.

It's amazing how this has held up over the years considering it was the 80's and how dated that sound is, but this song is an exception; so well recorded and perfectly mixed and mastered.
When Rebel Yell was played at a Tokyo disco where the younger generation gathered, I would play air guitar and dance wildly, grabbing each other. It was a good memory from the 80s.

the sound from the guitar is playing by steve stevens, on the floor he has a multieffect board with lot of multieffects for the guitar, like flanger, phaser, Tremolo, Reverb and Delay (Echo) , he pull and press the Tremolo on the guitar to create this effect, with a killswitch for the pickup microphones on the guitar, so you can put on off in a second to create this effeckt with a doubler chorus, and slap delay effect. steve use on his Rack often the Lexicon PCM 41 Digital and Eventide harmonizer to create some effects And Yes....Steve stevens is one of the Best out there.
BUT!!!!: We forget often, this record, is not a live record like they show on the video. It is a Studio Recording Song and after they made the video. So in the studio you can more go on details with guitar sounds instead on stage.
All that description is wonderful, but it isn't how Steve made the sound...you can find it easily on the 'net...he created the sound with a toy ray-gun, held up to the guitar pickups...you can even see a recent Vivo live session of this song, and during the solo, Billy hands Stevens a "version" of the toy ray-gun and he uses it to make a similar sound to what was recorded.
Billy Idol was the best bad boy of the 8o's. His swaggering devil may care attitude and blues voice and sexual energy made many a good girl swoon. The bad girls already knew what they were up for. It seems you are up for more, more, more!!!
Anyway, there is another video, rarely played, called TO BE A LOVER that I can imagine you would enjoy very much. Billy Idol pulls off a move that Elvis would have been proud of. The backup singers are in full 198o's style and bringing sassy vocals home. You could be one of them. I'd pay yo see that. Billy also rocks the Hell out of MONY, MONY.

It's amazing how this has held up over the years considering it was the 80's and how dated that sound is, but this song is an exception; so well recorded and perfectly mixed and mastered.

When Rebel Yell was played at a Tokyo disco where the younger generation gathered, I would play air guitar and dance wildly, grabbing each other. It was a good memory from the 80s.

To answer your question about the guitar sounds. Effect Pedals. Distortion, Echo, Reverb, chorus... There are all sorts of effects that guitarists use to change their sound.
It also helps if you're Steve Stevens. He's a beast.

I tell ya the disco's & clubs in the 80's were humming, such great fun.
That sound is made by actually smashing your knuckles into the strings while holding the tremolo bar, hitting them hard enough to make them smack into the pickups.

That sound is made by the girl with the keyboard and Steve Stevens ( guitar ) gives the move like he's shooting with the guitar that's a cool doble effect . Billy Idol still on tour this 2024 he's explosive with his band .

Toy ray gun. In an interview on another TH-cam channel “Professor of Rock” guitarist Steve Stevens mentioned they sampled a toy ray gun to get the sound.
