I feel so bad for Ncuti Gatwa when someone asks him if he is the Doctor. They really shouldn't have had Tennant stay. This new era is sort of a mess because of him hanging around on Earth with the Tardis too which just complicates things.
That clip makes me feel so sad for him. His big moment was totally stolen from him and even now he is completely overshadowed by his predecessor for no reason

Russell complaining about budget restrictions meaning they'd only be able to do "claustrophobic ghost stories" as though he didn't write what is quite possibly his best story - and one of the best stories period - as a last minute replacement horror episode on a significantly decreased budget and in a a single, small-scale location.
That is true, but I’m not sure it would work for a whole series so I do get his point. That being said you don’t have to make everything look perfect for something to be enjoyable, but RTD is muuch more versed than I am since I’ve done nothing to do with this
Honestly, if the BBC wanted to partner up with another company, I think HBO would've been the best choice. Not only is their content to a higher standard, (House of the Dragon, Succession, The Last of Us, Chernobyl) but the BBC already partnered up with them to make His Dark Materials, which is what I personally want higher-budget Who to look like, far more than Marvel or Star Wars. Plus, HBO I think already has seasons 1-13 of the revived era on their platform, so this rebrand might not have even been necessary if season 14 premiered on HBO Max. But this is assuming that RTD had all the streaming platforms in the world to choose from, which is probably not the case. I just think this would have been a better and more natural partnership.

I agree it would be cool to go back to having multiple four-part stories in the future, and having the show be lower budget, and more restrained like the early Jon Pertwee era would also be really cool.
I started off not being worried about Disney being involved because RTD had said they just send notes and he doesn't have to take any of them. Then there was a story that the opening scene for The Star Beast with 14 saying, "Once upon a Time Lord," was added at the request of Disney, and then a story about them giving him a note about adding in the scene with the snowman in "Church on Ruby Road." But RTD said that scene was a great note and without it you would have barely had The Doctor in the first half of the episode. It made sense, so I kept trying to stay positive about it, but the closer we get and the more news and trailers that come out make me think Disney's way more involved than RTD has previously let on. I hope I'm wrong, I hope everyone that is nervous about Disney's involvement is wrong, but Disney's history doesn't give me a lot of hope.

A distributor doesn't give notes on production, they simply promote and air, (if on TV or streaming,) or get a movie into theaters or other countries. RTD has said Disney gives him notes, he's said he's made changes to the show based off of those notes. They're not just a distributor.
One of the notes for the church on Ruby Road was to not use the word pram because Americans don't know what the word pram means. Russel thankfully ignored this note.
I am living in constant fear leading up to this series and every bit of news I hear just makes it worse. We only have a few series before doctor who is fully disney, and I'm scared they'll all suck. Also: "We don't have enough budget to make good episodes so we need to make a deal with disney to get 100x the budget" "We don't have enough budget to make more than 8 episodes"
The Davros stuff is so... it doesn't make any sense, by any point, really. It looks like Russel doesn't even get the character anymore. It's not about him being "a wheelchair user who's evil", having to remove his "wheelchair" looks more of ableist and anti-progressive thing to do than anything. The same goes for the clothing change on the 14th Doctor.
I think that's what is so strange to me. People are quick to pull the 'woke' card but a lot of RTD's choices aren't even explainable through that lens. It's just poor decision-making through and through

All it needs to do is drop the D+ tv shows and refocus back on the Movies. I would argue the D+ model is actively killing their franchise

I have a feeling the whole 'season one' thing is likely one big ploy to get more new viewers, particularly with the show going on disney. If new watchers saw 'series 14' they would likely think 'oh I need to go back and watch from series 1' and then when they do they find the show evidently dated in comparison to modern standards and will think something like 'this is far too awkward for me to try and watch'. Instead by calling it season one people who are new will think 'I suppose this is a good starting point' and won't be instantly slapped across the face by effects, themes, culture and everything else that is, keep in mind, nearly 20 years old by this point. Simply with how much TV show culture has developed at such a rapid pace since 2005 it's not unlike trying to watch a corny 80s movie. Its an 'appeal to a wider and more modern demographic' situation... Thing is, its possible theres going to be a lot of exposition dumping now that they're trying to pull in new viewers... obviously back in series 1 the whole landscape changed since classic with the time war and everything, but the doctor still had to dump a lot of exposition talking about his people, the daleks, etc, because the writers knew that a lot of the people watching likely havent seen all of the classic episodes. That might happen again... but since there was no 'big event' like the time war between the 60th specials and season one we might just have to suffer through them recounting the exact same things we literally just watched in the last 13 series...
I completely disagree that the Davros decision was Disney-related. No shot they had input on a non-Disney children in need (or comic relief?) skit, and maybe I'm wrong but I thought Disney had no input on the 60th episodes? Either way, it seems like an RTD type of decision
Ngl, despite all the confusing marketing decisions we've seen so far, I'm also still excited for season one. It seems there's a bit more Disney influence than I would've preferred, but I can put up with it as long as the show is still entertaining, and it looks like it will be!

You're actually kind of right. A lot of the early 60s stuff is shooting way above its pay grade but when we do get to the 70s I would argue things do get a lot smaller with the exile to Earth. It took them 18 seasons for a story with "end of the universe" level stakes which shows that there is restraint, but also that the show is willing to go large. I think I agree with you
I personally think rtd will stay on minimum 4 seasons seeing as he mentioned already developing ideas for season four. But I actually think he'll stay on even longer. It's possible that they could take a break after season 2 seeing as they've been filming concurrently.

As a really really new fan, (just started watching last year) I’m super excited. I’m currently going through all of nu who( almost finished with Jodie’s era) and I’m hyped for a new season of the show, especially since I’m also American and I feel like the show has the potential to be popular than ever. I doubt highly that jinx monsoons character will be the master simply because flying music notes isn't exactly the most stable of motifs for who the master is. But also i think jinx seems quite charming as a performer so if it turned out the maestro was the master I won't be complaining about the casting but I'm sure I'd have lots to complain about the writing of the master. Aside from that little tangent I'm looking forward to this season, I'll catch it when it comes out for streaming, hopefully after I finish the first Dr's and jodies Drs seasons lol
I've only watched a few minutes of the video but I'd like to give my idea on bigeneration. It's obviously a narrative device that was written in order to keep tenants around. As soon as they feel like viewership is beginning to dip again they're going to have him come in and save the day. But in terms of in-universe I personally believe that it's the result of 14th doing that salt thing at the edge of the universe.
7:24 he's said in some places (such as the 60th anniversary concert and some article i can't quite remember) that rtd was already on to planning season 3 and idk if he was joking but potentially even a season 4
10:44 Loki wasn’t that bad, and I genuinely liked Moon Knight, but I think it’s telling that among the main reasons is that they’re self-contained, independent stories which put the majority of their focus on characters over spectacle.

On the airing times: I'm a viewer from the states, I honestly preferred the earlier air time. Plus, I don't exactly get why they are prioritizing the US over the UK either.

Is it me or did I think you already did a tier list about the DW story arcs? If you didn't you should do it now you've said it. Personally my favourite was series 5 (even though I'm a loyal RTD 1 fan) there was so much to that series which built up and I felt it was pretty much the best Smith arc. Although Capaldi had an equally good one with series 10 with Missy. I am very unsure that knowing RTD is going to bow out soon, the fate of the show will be up in the air once again. Personally I'd really like Toby Whithouse (7 pretty good DW eps, Being Human, Torchwood) to take the reigns as I feel he could do a good run with a Hinchcliffe vibe. All in all great video 😁
Pretty hyped, my biggest worries about series 14 itself (no I'm not gonna call it season 1, even when the bluray is on my shelf :)) are that the season is too damn short, like 8 episodes? Please go back to 10 at least. And that RTD is writing waaaay too much. We already had Chibnall write/cowrite 12 consecutive episodes, now RTD is almost doing the same. I love most of his work, but he's done so much Doctor Who at this point that I'd like to see other creative voices too. And not just the Moff and 2 new writers doing the same episode, a bit more than that. Fingers crossed for more writers in S15. But the season looks great, I love Ncuti Gatwa, so all in all I'm excited for some good Doctor Who at the very least.
About 15 minutes in so far, (I have the attention span of a 3 year old ). Really good so far. You make a great point about manor house stories typically being really good, I was like “hey that’s true!”. Not a fan of Disney involvement at all, I’m worried that they have far too much say in what goes on, and the catering to the American audience is insulting (and I’m an American saying that). The show should premiere for the UK people first, it is your show after all. And we all know the season 1 rebrand is a Disney ploy because they don’t want to start with series 14 on Disney plus. I still think of this new era of Doctor who as part of 2005 modern Doctor who honestly, I’m having trouble thinking of it as a third Doctor who tv series.

You know, I'm from Brazil, so that whole problem with the decision of airing midnight, airing first on streaming and etc, kinda... doesn't matter. So I don't really get the point, even if I wasn't from America, I don't know why I should feel like this is a problem. We're in a streaming era, I started watching Doctor Who around the time season 8 was releasing, I really watched it having to go through not very trustworthy websites because we didn't have a way of properly watching it on other stuff. Now more people outside of the UK get to watch it more easily, I get to watch it more easily. Or do you think is that easy to watch Doctor Who, a show that BBC really likes to be so exclusive about it on... Brazil? We still don't have ANY legal way of watching it right now(only the Disney one, shame), it's already hard with NuWho, imagine with the Classic Who stuff. 89% of the time we had to resort to piracy, and FINALLY we have a way to watch it and it's only, at least... the new stuff. You know, I don't really like Disney either, but it's about their little hands on controlling stuff, speaking creatively, on narrative decisions and more so. But the part of being on streaming? It's not really the problem, even more so with the schedule. Actually, I can demonstrate an example that was a far worse problem: a Netflix case with the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean" anime. Differently from Doctor Who that we'll still get to watch it weekly or something, the JoJo anime got to be "fully" released to binge watching, but... divided, at the same time(no pun intended). They released it as batches of episodes, 12 or something, but the story wasn't complete, so after everyone watched, it was commented for a few weeks, days, then... we had to wait a considerable amount of time for them to release another batch. We really had more than an entire year of *waiting* for the whole thing to release, 1 season. Know what happened with that? The "hype" about it died, fans and casual viewers really became uninterested on watching because of how awful the waiting was, so, even on streaming, the releasing strategy didn't work, so it just became a part that got forgotten by most overtime. Doctor Who on the other hand? It's still going to be released weekly, two episodes is not a bad release schedule at all. Imagine if they released in the binge-watching format, like, Doctor Who. Really? This show going to Disney, even though I don't like the idea of their little hands getting into creative decisions that may happen(among other things), it's more positive than negative. It gets more people to talk about it, know about it, spread about it, the popularity of it can get to places that maybe it quite didn't land before, or that it did and now can be more easily watched. And again, quoting yourself, BBC is a "sinking ship", so getting Doctor Who on streaming isn't, by far, the worse thing that Russell did with Doctor Who at the moment. So this thing getting on a big streaming platform, still getting to be televised for people in the UK, people in the UK still getting to watch it more easily than everyone - that being the Classic, Nu and even Series 1 - while people outside the UK had to wait so long to properly have this... The problem you're seeing? It looks like a bit of whining, sorry. (no, like, really, sorry, I don't want to be that rude but, you know... I don't think it's that big of a deal, but you can always explain more of why would this be a problem).
Some of the mystery boxes might be answered with just 1 thing. Ruby’s mum, beep the meep’s boss, the one who waits, and mrs flood could be the same person and leads the legions of the toymaker. I’m just saying that we could’ve been given different clues that say there’s all these different mystery boxes but turns out to be the same 1 box(with a few more like mavity and stuff but it’s possible that they’re all answered with 1 thing)
I hope the new season brings people back to doctor who. The 3 parter was certainly rocky but hopefully the new season can bring doctor who back on the map.
Fun fact, John Barrowman is actually Scottish. He got the American accent from living in America as a kid and found it more useful than a Scottish accent in getting acting roles. I saw him on a talk show once where he spoke in the Scottish accent and it was like when I saw a clip of Idris Elba's real accent after watching The Wire- bizarre!

I'm jumping in and out of this video so I need to drop another comment lol, this time in response to you saying that the Doctor regenerating back into 10's face was never explained. It was. The Doctor regressed back to that face as a means to put on the emergency brakes and signal to themselves that something is drastically wrong and that they need to stop. After the traumas of the previous 2 series, the Doctor was close to breaking point and so their subconscious threw up what is in effect a kind of defense mechanism - it makes the Doctor go back to an old face. And not just any face. The face the Doctor considers a safe place more-so than perhaps any other, the face that found family again after the last time the Doctor felt this broken. Much in the same way people with severe mental trauma may regress in age to protect themselves, the Doctor regresses in regenerations. This is essentially what happened with 14. Donna even says as much in "The Giggle" when she tells the Doctor that he changed his face to "come home." This ties into the bigeneration where we see the Doctor finally given permission to stop by his future self. The Doctor gets to see living proof in 15 that he will get better and that it's okay for him to begin that road to recovery with the support of his best friend and a family unit around him. He knows that he can take the time to heal because a) he's seen the end result and b) he's safe in the knowledge that 15 is out there doing what needs to be done to keep the universe safe. The entire 60th anniversary is this. It's about the Doctor crying out and receiving assurance. Receiving warmth, love and tenderness from himself. It's about the Doctor saving himself.
I would be epic to see the daleks in a really historical episode correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like they don’t get to do that often and either way I like historical episodes.
100% agree, only historical example that springs to mind rn is Victory and parts of the Chase but its a great combo and I'm surprised it hasn't been done more often
While I respect your opinion, I think that you are not seeing the larger picture with a character like DAVROS.I actually was not disturbed by the political nonsense around Davros and his wheelchair, what I personally thought was cool, was that they expanded Davros's character beyond "post-accident Davros" and it opens up the Whoniverse to tell stories ABOUT Pre-DALEK Davros, or maybe all of the events that led up to the creation of the Daleks... his "Falling down" spiral as a scientist for example or maybe all of his early attempts at creating the DALEKS -- I think the War on Scaro, with the Kaled and Thal, could be an amazing backdrop for a miniseries. Maybe Davros was driven mad by the idea of racial purity, but where did that come from? What did he have to lose to get there? Did he lose his family in the war, a wife (or husband) and children? was he driven mad? Why would he turn so hard on his own people? We have never really known what his motivations really were beyond basic nazi'ism, (at least in TV media) beyond Genesis of the Daleks, and as we have learned from WWII, it was not always so cut and dry. There is SO much to explore here that could fill in so many GAPS and make the DALEKS and Davros even more terrifying, sad... human... We know who Davros was as a child, 12 created that bootstrap paradox, but how did he get from there, to DALEK Creator - that is like 60 years of missing time, and well, it IS a time travel show. I don't think this is a "retcon" as much as it just opens up the door to tell more stores. Less, regeneration energy and growing legs back, and more "what would young(er) Davros Do, on his path to disgrace, eugenics, megalomania, etc. I'd be interested to hear your perspective on this.

I wanted to come to the sub and submit a theory for the new series coming up. Many of my theories about the plot of the series revolve around the mysterious Susan Triad and how she could link to the even more strange and mysterious “One Who Waits”. My initial thoughts were she was the One herself, and that Susan Twist was playing Susan Forman, utilizing S. Triad, and anagram of her coined term, TARDIS. Tired of waiting for her grandfather’s return, she grew cosmically mad like the Meeps sun, and became evil. But now that we have two full trailers I am starting to form another name based theory. In trailer one and two, we see shots of sandy tornadoes and storms wreaking havoc on the universe. Not only London, but multiple planets are engulfed in the brown dust. We also see the Doctor and Ruby stepping out of the TARDIS in their 60’s duds to a decimated London. The narration by the Doctor says “this is what we’re fighting to stop, the destruction of everything”. I don’t know about you guys, but so much of this reads “Pyramids of Mars.” See attached comparisons. Next we see Jinkx Monsoon’s character climbing out of a piano, groaning “You Called”. This reminds me of “rumors” stating the character would be connected to a forgotten face from the Baker era. And how does The name Susan Triad fit into all this? Well.. she’s the CEO of a Tech Company. And what do you get when you put Sue with Tech?

From what I've heard Loki Season 2 is a massive improvement, but I don't want to watch any more D+ shows because I've been burned so many times. It's weird because I don't even dislike the MCU but I think they basically killed all their hype through these shows
This era has been thuroughly weird. Depending on Series 14 & 15 it'll either been revered or condemned with the seasons of JNT. I don't include the Chibnall era here because the Chibnall era wasn't weird, IMO it was the most vanilla, baseline run we've ever had.

Ima be real, the reason I was able to get into Doctor Who was due to it being on Netflix, I wouldn't have ever checked it out if it wasn't on there. So yeah, Mickey Mouse can go f off back to Disney, I genuinely only see harm with their increasing say on Doctor Who. I hope the series 14 will be great, it probably will be good, but I am worried to say the least. I'm also losing faith in listening to RTD.

Here's a few examples: Red dwarf, black adder, Friday night dinner, the inbetweeners, the young ones, Broadchurch, The end of the f***ing world, Blue eye samurai, The gentleman, black mirror, Derry girls, the IT crowd, the office, detectorists, spaced, Fawlty towers, etc.
Very true very true but also none of these are the "premium mini-series" or whatever they're called that are released on D+. Also almost all these shows have a 20 minute episode format and very small budgets. Even still this is a fair point
Most of my problems of RTD is his last 2 years on the show I utterly hated as the show got really stupid and really fast especially his last story that had the doctor jumping from a spaceship through a roof to a marble floor and that didn't make him regenerate

American here - no disrespect (this isn’t just you, I’ve seen a lot of it on DWTwitter and Whotube), but I’m really tired of all the whining over the show marketing to Americans. It really feels a bit myopic. Like yes, the timeslot changed. The previous time slots for the entire history of the show has made it so that non-Europeans are entirely locked out of the show. In the US, we got it 10 hours late, spoilers everywhere, and if you didn’t catch it during its first airing or record it, you were shit out of luck for a minimum of 6 months until it got on streaming (unless you had a buggy AMC+ subscription - ugh). I can only imagine how much worse it was for other countries in smaller markets. With the new time slot, everyone is getting it at the exact same time and you can watch at your pleasure instead of having to invest time in figuring out how you’re gonna make the first airing/make up for it when you missed it. And you officially no longer truly need cable to watch the show. It’s just incredible how much more accesible the show now is internationally. I’d think this would be celebrated. Doctor Who is now no longer just for the UK - it’s truly for everyone! But yeah, best to whine about it dropping at midnight with an airing later that day, in case you still want your family viewing time. How horrible. What a disgrace.
I think Americans can like Doctor Who (and a lot of them do) but that's because there's a lot of Americans. And I also think a lot of Americans *Don't* like Doctor Who and never will, as seen by the 50% like to dislike ratio on the latest American trailer. It just doesn't appeal to a lot of american culture and that's fine. But that's what makes it seem so foolish to try and pander to that audience. It's proven to have failed with the 1996 TV Movie, why are we doing it again? Also, the more american the show becomes, the more it pushes away its core british audience- and without a new audience to replace them... you can see where this goes. Of course this isn't to say that there aren't thousands and thousands of americans who love the show, but on the whole, that's just the way things are. Also ofc there are a bunch of things that are personal to me that make the change bad, annoying and inconvenient, so it seems only natural I'll be against the change.

When the intention is for the main character to remain mysterious, then yes having a scene where they explain all the mystery to the audience is ruining it. I judge episodes based on what they try to do and Church on Ruby Road would’ve succeeded in that department IF they hadn’t include that random shoe-horned in moment. For those who don’t know - is a fee that people in the UK pay every 12 months to be able to watch television and is also how the BBC fund many of their projects. So in the abolishment of said TV license fee many of the shows produced by the BBC would lose their primary source of funding hence why Russell wanted to go forward with this partnership with Disney. it’s because he wants to sell it off to the mouse in red pants, but more so so that our beloved show came outlive the inevitable that might happen at the BBC. Also, that means that iPlayer might become a subscription service 😢😢 4) I totally agree the decision to release Doctor Who episodes at midnight in the UK essentially shafting the whole country is a dumb decision. 7:20 actually RTD has said he's in it for the long haul and has mentioned that he already has plans for Seasons 3 AND 4. Plus we know he wants to make Doctor Who an EMPIRE which does require him sticking around long term since that takes time to build, the first major spin off hasn't even been released yet. And there's nothing to suggest Ncuti is leaving after Season 2/Series 15 either
I think RTD is doing his best to help Doctor Who and makes concessions when necessary and this was one of them. I fear that if it were anyone else the show would be in a worse situation

Russell complaining about budget restrictions meaning they'd only be able to do "claustrophobic ghost stories" as though he didn't write what is quite possibly his best story - and one of the best stories period - as a last minute replacement horror episode on a significantly decreased budget and in a a single, small-scale location.
That is true, but I’m not sure it would work for a whole series so I do get his point. That being said you don’t have to make everything look perfect for something to be enjoyable, but RTD is muuch more versed than I am since I’ve done nothing to do with this
Honestly, if the BBC wanted to partner up with another company, I think HBO would've been the best choice. Not only is their content to a higher standard, (House of the Dragon, Succession, The Last of Us, Chernobyl) but the BBC already partnered up with them to make His Dark Materials, which is what I personally want higher-budget Who to look like, far more than Marvel or Star Wars.
Plus, HBO I think already has seasons 1-13 of the revived era on their platform, so this rebrand might not have even been necessary if season 14 premiered on HBO Max. But this is assuming that RTD had all the streaming platforms in the world to choose from, which is probably not the case. I just think this would have been a better and more natural partnership.

I agree it would be cool to go back to having multiple four-part stories in the future, and having the show be lower budget, and more restrained like the early Jon Pertwee era would also be really cool.
I started off not being worried about Disney being involved because RTD had said they just send notes and he doesn't have to take any of them. Then there was a story that the opening scene for The Star Beast with 14 saying, "Once upon a Time Lord," was added at the request of Disney, and then a story about them giving him a note about adding in the scene with the snowman in "Church on Ruby Road." But RTD said that scene was a great note and without it you would have barely had The Doctor in the first half of the episode. It made sense, so I kept trying to stay positive about it, but the closer we get and the more news and trailers that come out make me think Disney's way more involved than RTD has previously let on. I hope I'm wrong, I hope everyone that is nervous about Disney's involvement is wrong, but Disney's history doesn't give me a lot of hope.

A distributor doesn't give notes on production, they simply promote and air, (if on TV or streaming,) or get a movie into theaters or other countries. I have a feeling the whole 'season one' thing is likely one big ploy to get more new viewers, particularly with the show going on disney.
If new watchers saw 'series 14' they would likely think 'oh I need to go back and watch from series 1' and then when they do they find the show evidently dated in comparison to modern standards and will think something like 'this is far too awkward for me to try and watch'.
Instead by calling it season one people who are new will think 'I suppose this is a good starting point' and won't be instantly slapped across the face by effects, themes, culture and everything else that is, keep in mind, nearly 20 years old by this point.
Simply with how much TV show culture has developed at such a rapid pace since 2005 it's not unlike trying to watch a corny 80s movie.
Its an 'appeal to a wider and more modern demographic' situation...
Thing is, its possible theres going to be a lot of exposition dumping now that they're trying to pull in new viewers... obviously back in series 1 the whole landscape changed since classic with the time war and everything, but the doctor still had to dump a lot of exposition talking about his people, the daleks, etc, because the writers knew that a lot of the people watching likely havent seen all of the classic episodes.
That might happen again... but since there was no 'big event' like the time war between the 60th specials and season one we might just have to suffer through them recounting the exact same things we literally just watched in the last 13 series...

You're actually kind of right. A lot of the early 60s stuff is shooting way above its pay grade but when we do get to the 70s I would argue things do get a lot smaller with the exile to Earth. It took them 18 seasons for a story with "end of the universe" level stakes which shows that there is restraint, but also that the show is willing to go large. I think I agree with you

I doubt highly that jinx monsoons character will be the master simply because flying music notes isn't exactly the most stable of motifs for who the master is. But also i think jinx seems quite charming as a performer so if it turned out the maestro was the master I won't be complaining about the casting but I'm sure I'd have lots to complain about the writing of the master.

I've only watched a few minutes of the video but I'd like to give my idea on bigeneration. It's obviously a narrative device that was written in order to keep tenants around. As soon as they feel like viewership is beginning to dip again they're going to have him come in and save the day. But in terms of in-universe I personally believe that it's the result of 14th doing that salt thing at the edge of the universe.

10:44 Loki wasn’t that bad, and I genuinely liked Moon Knight, but I think it’s telling that among the main reasons is that they’re self-contained, independent stories which put the majority of their focus on characters over spectacle.

If you didn't you should do it now you've said it. Personally my favourite was series 5 (even though I'm a loyal RTD 1 fan) there was so much to that series which built up and I felt it was pretty much the best Smith arc.
Although Capaldi had an equally good one with series 10 with Missy.
I am very unsure that knowing RTD is going to bow out soon, the fate of the show will be up in the air once again.
Personally I'd really like Toby Whithouse (7 pretty good DW eps, Being Human, Torchwood) to take the reigns as I feel he could do a good run with a Hinchcliffe vibe.

Pretty hyped, my biggest worries about series 14 itself (no I'm not gonna call it season 1, even when the bluray is on my shelf :)) are that the season is too damn short, like 8 episodes? Please go back to 10 at least. And that RTD is writing waaaay too much. We already had Chibnall write/cowrite 12 consecutive episodes, now RTD is almost doing the same. I love most of his work, but he's done so much Doctor Who at this point that I'd like to see other creative voices too. And not just the Moff and 2 new writers doing the same episode, a bit more than that. Fingers crossed for more writers in S15. But the season looks great, I love Ncuti Gatwa, so all in all I'm excited for some good Doctor Who at the very least.

About 15 minutes in so far, (I have the attention span of a 3 year old ). Really good so far. You make a great point about manor house stories typically being really good, I was like “hey that’s true!”. Not a fan of Disney involvement at all, I’m worried that they have far too much say in what goes on, and the catering to the American audience is insulting (and I’m an American saying that). The show should premiere for the UK people first, it is your show after all. And we all know the season 1 rebrand is a Disney ploy because they don’t want to start with series 14 on Disney plus. You know, I'm from Brazil, so that whole problem with the decision of airing midnight, airing first on streaming and etc, kinda... doesn't matter. So I don't really get the point, even if I wasn't from America, I don't know why I should feel like this is a problem. We're in a streaming era, I started watching Doctor Who around the time season 8 was releasing, I really watched it having to go through not very trustworthy websites because we didn't have a way of properly watching it on other stuff. Now more people outside of the UK get to watch it more easily, I get to watch it more easily. Or do you think is that easy to watch Doctor Who, a show that BBC really likes to be so exclusive about it on... Brazil? We still don't have ANY legal way of watching it right now(only the Disney one, shame), it's already hard with NuWho, imagine with the Classic Who stuff. 89% of the time we had to resort to piracy, and FINALLY we have a way to watch it and it's only, at least... the new stuff.
You know, I don't really like Disney either, but it's about their little hands on controlling stuff, speaking creatively, on narrative decisions and more so. But the part of being on streaming? It's not really the problem, even more so with the schedule.
Actually, I can demonstrate an example that was a far worse problem: a Netflix case with the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean" anime. Differently from Doctor Who that we'll still get to watch it weekly or something, the JoJo anime got to be "fully" released to binge watching, but... divided, at the same time(no pun intended). They released it as batches of episodes, 12 or something, but the story wasn't complete, so after everyone watched, it was commented for a few weeks, days, then... we had to wait a considerable amount of time for them to release another batch. We really had more than an entire year of *waiting* for the whole thing to release, 1 season. Know what happened with that? The "hype" about it died, fans and casual viewers really became uninterested on watching because of how awful the waiting was, so, even on streaming, the releasing strategy didn't work, so it just became a part that got forgotten by most overtime.
Doctor Who on the other hand? It's still going to be released weekly, two episodes is not a bad release schedule at all. Imagine if they released in the binge-watching format, like, Doctor Who. Really?
This show going to Disney, even though I don't like the idea of their little hands getting into creative decisions that may happen(among other things), it's more positive than negative. It gets more people to talk about it, know about it, spread about it, the popularity of it can get to places that maybe it quite didn't land before, or that it did and now can be more easily watched. And again, quoting yourself, BBC is a "sinking ship", so getting Doctor Who on streaming isn't, by far, the worse thing that Russell did with Doctor Who at the moment.
So this thing getting on a big streaming platform, still getting to be televised for people in the UK, people in the UK still getting to watch it more easily than everyone - that being the Classic, Nu and even Series 1 - while people outside the UK had to wait so long to properly have this... The problem you're seeing? It looks like a bit of whining, sorry.

Fun fact, John Barrowman is actually Scottish. He got the American accent from living in America as a kid and found it more useful than a Scottish accent in getting acting roles. I saw him on a talk show once where he spoke in the Scottish accent and it was like when I saw a clip of Idris Elba's real accent after watching The Wire- bizarre!

I'm jumping in and out of this video so I need to drop another comment lol, this time in response to you saying that the Doctor regenerating back into 10's face was never explained.
It was.
The Doctor regressed back to that face as a means to put on the emergency brakes and signal to themselves that something is drastically wrong and that they need to stop. After the traumas of the previous 2 series, the Doctor was close to breaking point and so their subconscious threw up what is in effect a kind of defense mechanism - it makes the Doctor go back to an old face. And not just any face. The face the Doctor considers a safe place more-so than perhaps any other, the face that found family again after the last time the Doctor felt this broken. Much in the same way people with severe mental trauma may regress in age to protect themselves, the Doctor regresses in regenerations. This is essentially what happened with 14. Donna even says as much in "The Giggle" when she tells the Doctor that he changed his face to "come home."
This ties into the bigeneration where we see the Doctor finally given permission to stop by his future self. The Doctor gets to see living proof in 15 that he will get better and that it's okay for him to begin that road to recovery with the support of his best friend and a family unit around him. He knows that he can take the time to heal because a) he's seen the end result and b) he's safe in the knowledge that 15 is out there doing what needs to be done to keep the universe safe.
The entire 60th anniversary is this. It's about the Doctor crying out and receiving assurance. Receiving warmth, love and tenderness from himself. It's about the Doctor saving himself.

100% agree, only historical example that springs to mind rn is Victory and parts of the Chase but its a great combo and I'm surprised it hasn't been done more often
While I respect your opinion, I think that you are not seeing the larger picture with a character like DAVROS.I actually was not disturbed by the political nonsense around Davros and his wheelchair, what I personally thought was cool, was that they expanded Davros's character beyond "post-accident Davros" and it opens up the Whoniverse to tell stories ABOUT Pre-DALEK Davros, or maybe all of the events that led up to the creation of the Daleks... his "Falling down" spiral as a scientist for example or maybe all of his early attempts at creating the DALEKS -- I think the War on Scaro, with the Kaled and Thal, could be an amazing backdrop for a miniseries. Maybe Davros was driven mad by the idea of racial purity, but where did that come from? What did he have to lose to get there? Did he lose his family in the war, a wife (or husband) and children? was he driven mad? Why would he turn so hard on his own people? We have never really known what his motivations really were beyond basic nazi'ism, (at least in TV media) beyond Genesis of the Daleks, and as we have learned from WWII, it was not always so cut and dry. There is SO much to explore here that could fill in so many GAPS and make the DALEKS and Davros even more terrifying, sad... human... We know who Davros was as a child, 12 created that bootstrap paradox, but how did he get from there, to DALEK Creator - that is like 60 years of missing time, and well, it IS a time travel show. I don't think this is a "retcon" as much as it just opens up the door to tell more stores. Less, regeneration energy and growing legs back, and more "what would young(er) Davros Do, on his path to disgrace, eugenics, megalomania, etc.

So keeping with the 'D' words theme watch the death of physical DVD formats including box sets as Disney is only interested in streaming. I hope we enjoy the episodes and they look promising but you will possibly never own a hard copy in yout life. Disney want to remove physical media and are continuing to do so already.

Series 1 overall theory.
Hello Whovian Friends! I wanted to come to the sub and submit a theory for the new series coming up.
Many of my theories about the plot of the series revolve around the mysterious Susan Triad and how she could link to the even more strange and mysterious “One Who Waits”. My initial thoughts were she was the One herself, and that Susan Twist was playing Susan Forman, utilizing S. Triad, and anagram of her coined term, TARDIS. Tired of waiting for her grandfather’s return, she grew cosmically mad like the Meeps sun, and became evil.
But now that we have two full trailers I am starting to form another name based theory.
In trailer one and two, we see shots of sandy tornadoes and storms wreaking havoc on the universe. Not only London, but multiple planets are engulfed in the brown dust.
We also see the Doctor and Ruby stepping out of the TARDIS in their 60’s duds to a decimated London. The narration by the Doctor says “this is what we’re fighting to stop, the destruction of everything”.
I don’t know about you guys, but so much of this reads “Pyramids of Mars.” See attached comparisons.
Next we see Jinkx Monsoon’s character climbing out of a piano, groaning “You Called”. This reminds me of “rumors” stating the character would be connected to a forgotten face from the Baker era.
And how does The name Susan Triad fit into all this? Well.. she’s the CEO of a Tech Company.
And what do you get when you put Sue with Tech?
With all the supernatural threats being allowed into the universe this would be the perfect time to bring the Trickster back
30:55 It’s mid but I think it gets a lot better in season two because it has very tight planning and knows exactly what it wants to do. I also appreciate that it doesn’t overstay its welcome and gives the show a concrete end when it’s done with the story it wants to tell. I’d have been all over an original series with the same concept and it pains me that it has to be a Marvel spin-off.
From what I've heard Loki Season 2 is a massive improvement, but I don't want to watch any more D+ shows because I've been burned so many times. It's weird because I don't even dislike the MCU but I think they basically killed all their hype through these shows
This era has been thuroughly weird. Depending on Series 14 & 15 it'll either been revered or condemned with the seasons of JNT. I don't include the Chibnall era here because the Chibnall era wasn't weird, IMO it was the most vanilla, baseline run we've ever had.
Completely agree with the association of Doctor Who with stuff like Marvel. It takes away what makes Doctor Who unique. And that Whoniverse intro is nearly a ripoff

Ima be real, the reason I was able to get into Doctor Who was due to it being on Netflix, I wouldn't have ever checked it out if it wasn't on there. So yeah, Mickey Mouse can go f off back to Disney, I genuinely only see harm with their increasing say on Doctor Who. I hope the series 14 will be great, it probably will be good, but I am worried to say the least. I'm also losing faith in listening to RTD.

Here's a few examples: Red dwarf, black adder, Friday night dinner, the inbetweeners, the young ones, Broadchurch, The end of the f***ing world, Blue eye samurai, The gentleman, black mirror, Derry girls, the IT crowd, the office, detectorists, spaced, Fawlty towers, etc.
Very true very true but also none of these are the "premium mini-series" or whatever they're called that are released on D+. Also almost all these shows have a 20 minute episode format and very small budgets. Even still this is a fair point

Most of my problems of RTD is his last 2 years on the show I utterly hated as the show got really stupid and really fast especially his last story that had the doctor jumping from a spaceship through a roof to a marble floor and that didn't make him regenerate

WHAT A TREAT
American here - no disrespect (this isn’t just you, I’ve seen a lot of it on DWTwitter and Whotube), but I’m really tired of all the whining over the show marketing to Americans. It really feels a bit myopic. Like yes, the timeslot changed. The previous time slots for the entire history of the show has made it so that non-Europeans are entirely locked out of the show. In the US, we got it 10 hours late, spoilers everywhere, and if you didn’t catch it during its first airing or record it, you were shit out of luck for a minimum of 6 months until it got on streaming (unless you had a buggy AMC+ subscription - ugh). I can only imagine how much worse it was for other countries in smaller markets.
With the new time slot, everyone is getting it at the exact same time and you can watch at your pleasure instead of having to invest time in figuring out how you’re gonna make the first airing/make up for it when you missed it. And you officially no longer truly need cable to watch the show. It’s just incredible how much more accesible the show now is internationally. I’d think this would be celebrated. Doctor Who is now no longer just for the UK - it’s truly for everyone! But yeah, best to whine about it dropping at midnight with an airing later that day, in case you still want your family viewing time. How horrible. What a disgrace.
I think Americans can like Doctor Who (and a lot of them do) but that's because there's a lot of Americans. And I also think a lot of Americans *Don't* like Doctor Who and never will, as seen by the 50% like to dislike ratio on the latest American trailer. It just doesn't appeal to a lot of american culture and that's fine. But that's what makes it seem so foolish to try and pander to that audience. It's proven to have failed with the 1996 TV Movie, why are we doing it again? Also, the more american the show becomes, the more it pushes away its core british audience- and without a new audience to replace them... you can see where this goes. Of course this isn't to say that there aren't thousands and thousands of americans who love the show, but on the whole, that's just the way things are. Also ofc there are a bunch of things that are personal to me that make the change bad, annoying and inconvenient, so it seems only natural I'll be against the change.
Especially after Ncuti Gatwa's rather questionable comments the other day...

When the intention is for the main character to remain mysterious, then yes having a scene where they explain all the mystery to the audience is ruining it. I judge episodes based on what they try to do and Church on Ruby Road would’ve succeeded in that department IF they hadn’t include that random shoe-horned in moment. Additionally, surely you must realise that if Disney does purchase Doctor Who it negatively affects us the most. I will definitely agree though that blind hate is cringe

I’m a regular viewer of your content most of the time I like it and at times I disagree with your stance not to say that I have a problem with you because obviously we as human beings we have different opinions. That’s just how life is. This would be in terms of your stance with your lack of information when it comes to the whole Disney deal.
1) first off first off the BBC. I’m just partnered with Disney broadcasting entertainment so that they’ll be able to fund Doctor Who more than it has been in the past.
2) although Disney is able to give Russell and the BBC notes on the scripts that are produced the final coal and decision on what they want to do going forward is still both Russell’s and the BBC’s.
3) Russell didn’t say that he wants to sell Doctor Who to Disney, nor is it about “ being stuck making claustrophobic ghost stories.” in fact that’s not what he’s saying at all. Least not entirely.
By “ The BBC is dying “ Russell is talking about the fact that they are planning on a polishing the TV license fee. For those who don’t know - is a fee that people in the UK pay every 12 months to be able to watch television and is also how the BBC fund many of their projects. So in the abolishment of said TV license fee many of the shows produced by the BBC would lose their primary source of funding hence why Russell wanted to go forward with this partnership with Disney. it’s because he wants to sell it off to the mouse in red pants, but more so so that our beloved show came outlive the inevitable that might happen at the BBC.
Also, that means that iPlayer might become a subscription service 😢😢
4) I totally agree the decision to release Doctor Who episodes at midnight in the UK essentially shafting the whole country is a dumb decision. No question about it.

7:20 actually RTD has said he's in it for the long haul and has mentioned that he already has plans for Seasons 3 AND 4. Plus we know he wants to make Doctor Who an EMPIRE which does require him sticking around long term since that takes time to build, the first major spin off hasn't even been released yet. And there's nothing to suggest Ncuti is leaving after Season 2/Series 15 either

I think RTD is doing his best to help Doctor Who and makes concessions when necessary and this was one of them. I fear that if it were anyone else the show would be in a worse situation
