    If it weren't for Moffat retconning the Time-War, bringing back Galifrey only to barely do anything actually with Galifrey itself whilst making The Doctor single handily the most important figure of the entire universe and enabling Chibnall a window of opportunity to completely change The Doctor's origin with Timeless Child... Russell wouldn't need to essentially reboot the universe again, so we have a Doctor that's once again learning a whole new set of conditions, circumstance brought on via the merge of reality and the supernatural. Y'know all the things that made the reboot interesting and gave it depth... But I'm glad the madlad did it - seeing Ncuti's Doctor describe supernatural elements as a new type of science he's taking in is a breath of fresh air.
    Other than that - this all occured cause Moffat decided to fix what wasn't broken and cause Chibnall set it on fire afterwards.

    Russell's the goat I've full confidence in him concerning his second tenure. This is the man who on day one made it his personal mission to make Doctor Who a living, breathing universe with each character and place having its own purpose as he crafted lore that somehow felt his tenure went on longer than just 4 years spanning even multiple spin-offs in the process which continued to follow previous companions. He also crafted single handily the best human imortalised analogue to The Doctor symbolising his pain of living for so long in Captain Jack Harkness watching as his friends and everything he knew die with time as he'd keep on existing for billions of years until his fixed point ceased. This is without even mentioning the fact he wrote the absolute sci-fi masterpiece that's Children of Earth...

    19:23 Yes, it was. There was actually a similar scene in "Eve of the Daleks," where the Doctor gets angry with Yaz before apologising and saying that her actions are catching up with her and that she won't let her die because of it. When, at the end of the episode, Yaz asks the Doctor to explain what she meant about her actions catching up with her, the Doctor refuses to explain, claiming that it meant nothing and she didn't remember. The Flux was Division's response to her investigations into them, she didn't want to admit this to her companions, blaming herself for the destruction that it caused. In my opinion, this is why the scene in "Wild Blue Yonder" works, because when the Doctor finally admits this to a companion, he realises that he has opened up to an enemy instead which is why this moment is so painful for him and explains why he breaks down when he realises he's been tricked. There are stories from all eras that I prefer to this and Flux is one of them, it's my personal favourite and consider it a masterpiece but I also enjoyed "Wild Blue Yonder" and think that it is another fantastic addition to the franchise, it's definitely a new favourite of mine and I'm looking forward to seeing what Russell has planned for his new era.

    Wanna know a funny thing? The 60th specials, and 14 in general made me retroactively love 10. I've always liked the 10th Doctor but he's never been one of my favorites. But honestly watching the 60th now makes me wanna go back and watch some of 10s best, I genuinely believe the 14th Doctor completes the 10th Doctor due to basically being the same incarnation, just more mature.
    Anyway yeah Wild Blue Yonder is better than anything the Chibnall era cooked up, I wouldn't say im an apologist for 13's era, but I do like have some stories I love like the Nikola Tesla episode. But yeah no not even that compares to this, or any Doctors best few stories.

  • @friendlyotaku9525
    @friendlyotaku9525 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    19:37 - that's because the Doctor was suppressing how they felt, trying to come across as everything being okay even though deep down the Doctor feels a lot more than they let on, we saw this with 13 too, she would often suppress her true feelings and keep secrets, even from her friends and I like that this characterization is consistent with both 13 and 14 and this scene is very much those feelings coming to the surface.and I think that's fantastic and it shows just how much Russell loves and respect his predecessor's work, which he does! Could've done without the Moffat (though I do agree with you on certain awful parts we saw with the 11th Doctor like him kissing a lesbian without consent and that... disgusting scene where he talks about Clara's skirt being too tight... urgh...) and Chibnall slander but I will say this is a great video and I do agree, this episode is fantastic!

    Good review.
    Have to agree that, even though there have been good stories since RTD1, Wild Blue Yonder felt like we got a fully realised stand-alone story well told from beginning to end for the first time SINCE RTD1.
    Have to say, first forty minutes of The Giggle were great, and last twenty minutes were very good too, its just that at forty minutes, it takes a massive tonal shift which detracts from it being a stand-alone story. Understandable, i suppose, as it has to set the scene for the new era. Wild Blue Yonder sits happily in the middle of the specials, able to be its own thing.
    And yes, despite some good stuff, The Star Beast is a bit of a mess.

I think Russel using the "oh the doctor can just see this thing the audience can't cause he's clever" with the eyelashkng growing too quick is just a bit cheap. And I think the CGI is a bit too goofy for me to take the monsters seriously in some bits. The practical effects however are absolutely gorgeous. I think it's a good episode but nowhere near the emotional heights of something like Vincent and the doctor and nowhere near the narrative heights of something like the doctor falls. Honestly during Moffat's era despite the obvious Heaven Sent, I was way more invested in Toby Whithouse, Jamie Mathieson and Sarah Dollard's episodes than literally any of Moffat's - problem with Moffat is when it comes to drama he cannot drop the quips, this is plain to see in not only his tenure of Doctor Who, but also Sherlock, Jekyll and Dracula which he also butchered. I'll take Russell T. Davies when it comes to character investment and dramatic tension anyday over Moffat irrespective of how campy some of his scenes can be. Like seriously when Bill is presumed to be in a state of danger (has been converted into Cyberwoman) during the Cyberman episode The Doctor is in a completely different part of the ship cracking quips concerning time being slower. Stuff like that is what immediately reduces my interest in a lot of Moffat's characters. Height of dramatic tension and Moffat treats it partially like it's a Coupling reunion...
