I freakin loved this. I loved that the Doctor's shock and hurt are more clearly shown. I loved the Doctor's initial disregard and even disrespect to Captain Jack like him appearing to save her was almost a nuisance because the captain disturbed her thought process. It's a portrayal of how people who are hurt can so easily push the people they obviously care about away from them with mere words and little actions. And I loved that Captain Jack stayed throughout all that. I loved the "Here we go again" as well! I loved the fam's whole dynamic when the Doctor was absent since it became so clear that they were only along for the ride because The Doctor didn't want to be alone. I loved that the 13th Doctor being so reserved was shown once again at the end when it took her too long to come up with what to say to Graham and Ryan. I loved Captain Jack waiting just outside the Tardis because of course Captain Jack will. Captain Jack knows how the Doctor can be so kind and caring, and clearly, she had just been in so much shock, and Yaz was right, the Doctor really needed friends at that moment. The way Graham and Ryan departed now gives so much depth to the 14th's "ending" as the Doctor finally finds not just a fam, but a whole family. Also, finding out that you're the timeless child and then being the front and center of the Flux causing the destruction of the whole universe and recreating it? When Captain Jack told the Doctor that she didn't leave him and that her future self picked him up and brought Captain Jack in front of the Tardis, the Doctor was reminded of how she used to be, and who she could be again, the Doctor. Except, when she was finally starting to heal, the Flux happened. The doctor just can't catch a break, and I'm so glad they're erasing all that trauma now from all the way since the 1st Doctor. Everything ends and it's always sad, but everything begins again, too. And that's always happy. Be happy, Doctor!

oh this is such a good rewrite! i love the way jack's involved, i love the exploration on how certain companions end up becoming like the doctor - often at the expense of their mental health - and i love how ryan & graham departed, it's incredibly painful and hurts my soul but also makes sense for both their characterisation and what the doctor's been going through. captain jack staying throughout the whole episode is also very good!

Honestly, that's a good episode rewrite. Incorporating elements from previous stories like The Trial of a Timelord, that one moment in The Waters of Mars, a lot of The Timeless Children, it's good. I feel bad for Ryan and Graeme given that ending. It makes up for the lackluster status of The Timeless Children, and that moment where The Doctor realizes she kicked herself so much with this new title that she became The Time(Lady) Victorious once again... chef's kiss. It's amazing.
I'm no Chibnall hater (I think there are good aspects and some good episodes of Chibs era) but I'm glad you chose this episode as I felt the same when I first saw this episode. It could've been so much better but I can understand Chibs not having enough time to write out a substantial special.
Writing 12 episodes in a row is not really a positive given he could have handed those stories out to other writers. Any show runners first task should be to make sure the workload is going to be manageable to get the best out of the ideas. Having to present first drafts for acreen is unforgiveable
I hate to tell you this brother but all 3 showrunners have turned in first drafts💀 I personally think it is very admirable to single-handedly keep the show afloat during the pandemic but that is just my opinion
@dwfan91- yeah, it's admirable to want to keep the show going (I suspect late 80s trauma all three suffered at the original cancellation could fuel that!), but ultimately I feel the whole showrunner setup fails if the show stands or falls on one person's shoulders. Hire more writers and hire a brutal script editor who will kill everyone's darlings, including the showrunners. While I think Chibnall was the weakest of the three, that's mainly due to him not really having a distinct style, but a grab bag approach of imitating RTD and Moffatt at a lower resolution, leaning into their tropes with diminishing returns. So I totally agree TC is just more RTD/Moffatt space Jesus stuff, it serves less of a dramatic role, while being simultaneously more convoluted yey more generic. It most successfully solves Brain of Morbius and it feelslike that's all Chibnall has really thought through. It doesn’t push the character anywhere forward, or create a better backstory (the Doctor is literally a reset to child of another character who also calls themselves the Doctor and has a police box TARDIS - If all Timelords were the Timeless Child (biregenerated off of the original!?), you'd get the same effect without the Doctor falling into the special one from birth trope.

With RTD writing probably an average 3 episodes per season that doesn't leave much room for new and/or even old writers. The show desperately needs new blood
Gary Russell once said that if he hypothetically became the showrunner for Doctor Who, he would not write any scripts himself but instead focus fully on overseeing the production of the show. Which is a smart move to be honest. I directed a short film project and it takes a lot of energy to oversee the whole production and make sure everything is running like clockwork. Imagine trying to write for the show on top of all that responsibility. It would be a good idea to oversea the production and commission writers to create the scripts. Then you can go through them and see what needs to be refined and changed before giving the go ahead. Allow the writers to focus solely on writing.
@dwfan91- agreed, the show should be trying as many new writers as it can, as well as holding the best finds close to them - if I was showrunner, I'd have given Jamie Mathieson free rein to write as much as he wanted for example. I feel like people had a problem with Clara but moved on, the stuff from the TV movie was just ignored and personally I never watched the episodes concerning the hybrid in order so I still don’t understand it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this rewrite. To me, it actually makes more sense. If you're able to do any more of these, would you be able to smash another one out before the end of next year..? I know you said they do take a while to get completed. Anyway, this version I'd love to actually see as a full episode. now as someone who literally adores 13 and her era (I am but a simple lesbian, what can I say) I think this is fucking phenomenal. I'm saying this genuinely: submit some work to the BBC, you could go places dude.
It's interesting having the Doctor murder a dalek in cold blood be the catalyst for Ryan and Graham leaving, thus 13 and Yaz spending more time together and therefore Thazmin. Perhaps in this unideal scenario that deepens their bond.
16:15 The Impossible Girl was honestly just as bad as the TC; Capaldi-era Clara is the one I care about. Series 7b was truly something else… not saying it was terrible, it had some good episodes, but the arc tying it together wasn’t very well done, like an exacerbation of what happened to Series 6, where almost every episode was very good, but the arc tying them together was somewhat lacking.
I think my problem w the Impossible Girl arc isn’t even anything to do with Clara- it’s the constant dragging of heels until the finale when we can finally figure out what it is. Realistically the Doctor has no reason not to be trying to uncover the mystery in all of the episodes but for some reason he isn’t
If this had been the episode I might have been a bit more hopeful for Flux, and not as upset with the timeless child, I'm over it now but it took a while.

im sorry but the "im the timeless child" line would have gone SO HARD in revolution of the daleks! and i am just obsessed with the decision of keeping her in the red jumpsuit throughout the whole episode because !! yeah, THE VISUAL SYMBOLISM IS KINDA IMPORTANT!! if rtd can have a random arc of ten being like IM TIMELORD VICTORIOUS to be all edgy and angsty, then chibs deserved to add the (well deserved) angst to thirteen claiming this new title as well, especially since its SO devastating. it's not something to be prideful of, it's said in anger and confusion all at once. the scene where she tells the dalek it's wrong for calling her the doctor is reminiscent to me of the scene where twelve says "the doctor is no longer here, you are stuck with me" to ashildr in face the raven. man it just goes so hard during the moments of "the doctor took it too far" and i feel like we were definitely missing that with 13. im so so so glad you found a great way to naturally implant it into her story in an episode that flawlessly could have pulled it off.

I always thought about the fact that the Doctor CAN DIE! If he or she got shot or fatally wounded/attacked/damaged or whatever, during their regeneration, they can no longer regenerate. I don’t get how the Doctor doesn’t have infinite regenerations though? Does that still not apply to Ncuti because he formed from bi-generation?

Not sure about how I feel about the "I am the timeless child" line but wow that exit was so much better. Gut wrenching but not overplayed, gave me Tegan exit vibes.

It's interesting having the Doctor murder a dalek in cold blood be the catalyst for Ryan and Graham leaving, thus 13 and Yaz spending more time together and therefore Thazmin. Perhaps in this unideal scenario that deepens their bond.
16:15 The Impossible Girl was honestly just as bad as the TC; Capaldi-era Clara is the one I care about. Series 7b was truly something else… not saying it was terrible, it had some good episodes, but the arc tying it together wasn’t very well done, like an exacerbation of what happened to Series 6, where almost every episode was very good, but the arc tying them together was somewhat lacking.
I think my problem w the Impossible Girl arc isn’t even anything to do with Clara- it’s the constant dragging of heels until the finale when we can finally figure out what it is. Realistically the Doctor has no reason not to be trying to uncover the mystery in all of the episodes but for some reason he isn’t
If this had been the episode I might have been a bit more hopeful for Flux, and not as upset with the timeless child, I'm over it now but it took a while.

im sorry but the "im the timeless child" line would have gone SO HARD in revolution of the daleks! and i am just obsessed with the decision of keeping her in the red jumpsuit throughout the whole episode because !! yeah, THE VISUAL SYMBOLISM IS KINDA IMPORTANT!! if rtd can have a random arc of ten being like IM TIMELORD VICTORIOUS to be all edgy and angsty, then chibs deserved to add the (well deserved) angst to thirteen claiming this new title as well, especially since its SO devastating. it's not something to be prideful of, it's said in anger and confusion all at once. the scene where she tells the dalek it's wrong for calling her the doctor is reminiscent to me of the scene where twelve says "the doctor is no longer here, you are stuck with me" to ashildr in face the raven. man it just goes so hard during the moments of "the doctor took it too far" and i feel like we were definitely missing that with 13. im so so so glad you found a great way to naturally implant it into her story in an episode that flawlessly could have pulled it off.

I always thought about the fact that the Doctor CAN DIE! If he or she got shot or fatally wounded/attacked/damaged or whatever, during their regeneration, they can no longer regenerate. I don’t get how the Doctor doesn’t have infinite regenerations though? Does that still not apply to Ncuti because he formed from bi-generation?
The limit on regenerations wasn't undone- it was put on him after he lost his memories

It only had so much potential as an era, because it was so sorely lacking in any worthwhile content.. so lacking in character development, so lacking in clever concepts, so lacking in compulsive stories, and worst of all lacking in emotional depth!
Not sure about how I feel about the "I am the timeless child" line but wow that exit was so much better. Gut wrenching but not overplayed, gave me Tegan exit vibes.
