I guess that just goes to show that the Corolla family, is certainly a winner in reliability. We have world records for fastest cars, but where is the world record for most reliable car of all time?
I've been a mechanic for over 30 years and I love watching Scotty's videos because I always like learning something new. However, I think this video might unintentionally suggest to some people that bleeding brakes isn't necessary and/or that air only gets in brake systems when there is a leak, which is not true. Brake fluid is hydroscopic and absorbs ambient air moisture over a long period of time, which is why some manufacturers still recommend brake fluid flushes as a maintenance item as the car ages. If your pedal is spongy and the fluid is dark, it is absolutely worth flushing the brake fluid before running system scans and other expensive diagnostics. You can do this by bleeding and adding more fluid until it comes out clean at each wheel if you don't have pressure bleeder. I flush brake fluid all the time on older and/or high mileage cars and people can't believe the difference it makes. (One person swore I must have changed all her brakes because she couldn't ever remember it working so well!)
I want to say Scotty has a video on the necessity of changing/bleeding your brake fluid for this very reason. Your brake lines and components will corrode faster from the inside out than the outside in. I believe I watched it not too long ago
@@irontiger0462 well, when the fluid gets old it can start corroding inside yes and screw things up, mainly because brake fluid is hydroscopic & absorbs moisture from the air, actually the manufacturers recommended fluid replacement every two years. But most people never do. I am a life long semi retired mechanic by trade as well. And I haven't seen brake lines corroded out from the inside. But sure as heck have replaced a lot rusted out from the outside up here in the rust belt!
I've used "flare nut wrenches" (crow's foot) for years on lines. I can't count the number of times I've seen rounded corners on fuel and brake lines, and I'm just a "hobbyist." Thank you for showing the right way, Scotty!
Nick Oaks This video is a good example of a well cared vehicle… Except for the master cylinder obviously this being a one owner RAV4 apart from the one major problem it had is pretty much a perfect vehicle and it’s far from being a brand new one at this point

Scotty. I have a 2015 Toyota Camry SE. 2.5L. It only has 65000 miles on it, but I have owned many cars in my life. These cars are amazing and I do my own maintenance. That Ow-20 is cheaper to buy and do myself than go to a shop. Thanks for all your advice.

I know someone with a 4runner and they have this squishy brake issue. The dealer told them it is common for the 4 runner models and they should not worry about it.
I haven't changed a master cylinder since back in the 70s, the issue was always trying to get the plunger out, and then back in, apparently that's no longer an issue. great video Scotty!
2007 Rav4, brakes tend to be a big mushy when the pad get near to needing replaced. After replacing the pads, brake needs to be pumped a few times, then it's firm again.
Just fixed my caliper on 03 Rav4 for some reason it had rust in the pins and it locked up on one side pretty much had to loosen it and get more grease on the pins to get it to move otherwise my brakes were so spongy. Works great now!!

2005 Prius with 150k burns 1 quart per 3000 miles too but gets over 30 mpg giving it full throttle all of the time you’re not squealing the ABS! People will still tailgate you and play bumper cars until your car gets totaled (my story anyway...)
@@Suction_ Toyota refused to repair/replace my cousin's engine in her Rav4 because the amount of oil it was burning was "within the accepted level" for safe vehicle operation. Toyota has great attorneys and PR personnel to cover up something so blatantly flawed.
You're the man Scotty. No matter how modern a car can be, a master cyl. Is still a master cyl. I like how you eliminate the electronic problems first and then bring in the victory with the old school knowledge.
Scotty speaks fast but accurately and he's giving you complete technical information everything he's telling you lets you know what you're dealing with and it's nice to know these things and he does it in a short time

you forgot to remove the brake master cylinder fluid before loosening the brake lines and need to be cautious of spilling the fluid on painted surfaces.
Interesting Scotty...my '03 Suburban has a similar issue. No easily identifiable leaks, not adding brake fluid, but spongy brake pedal...going to replace the Master Cylinder...thanks
The beauty is it’s only a $70 part. I have 2010 corolla with 170k miles and the only thing I’ve had to replace is the horn speaker. It’s a $15 part that took 15 minutes to install
@@xdunejunkiex Also 2010 Corolla S here w/160K. All that's ever been done is regular maintenance up until now (oil, filters, brakes). I don't think the tranny fluid has even been changed and it looks ok, but I'm going to change it anyway, esp since Scotty said Toyotas don't shed clutch material like other vehicles and it was ok to do even at this point. Problems now: Crankshaft seal has a VERY slow leak at the timing cover (going to live with it), it's got a slight idle issue I'm obsessing over, but can live with if I have to, and the slightly spongy brakes which I'll probably address with new MC, but could also live with if I have to. This is the first car I've ever owned with no issues at this mileage and the ones I have presently can be lived with. And I've owned A LOT of cars!
Hi Scotty, Love your videos. In my experience, if the there are no leaks, it is the master cylinder. When I was young, they could cost as much as half the car. My car is a 1996 Landcruiser. Pedal went down, typical Toyota, took years to be apparent and never actually failed. Fitted the new master cylinder, bled the system to the new colour. Next week, pedal was down again. Checked everything again, re watched all the Utube videos, re bled all the points, a bunch of air came out, now perfect. They are mysterious, but it is Toyota, it will work and you can solve any problems. The most mysterious thing about them is, how do they keep working for so long. I mean 20 years old and a very capable machine, and still one of the best cars I have ever driven.
Yup. Then just 1 squirt with the lines loose and a rag to catch the fluid. Less mess and brake fluid can damage paint and stuff. I recently did this on my wife's 07 Rav. Her master cylinder failed completely and she hit the car in front of her. The next press on the pedal and it acted fine again to carefully drive it home. Scary. TIP: If your pedal ever goes right to the floor, let it up and press again. Don't just press harder like she did.
I've always used a bench bleeder kit too.. Sometimes they come with the new master cylinder just two plastic fittings and two small hoses.. what I'm curious to know is did he have to bleed the brake lines at the wheels and if so what about the ABS module I mean I know his fancy scan tool can probably do that but he didn't show it.
@@joecostantino3684 I was thinking the same thing. Since he opened the whole system, he would have to bleed at the wheels because air got into the lines. Also, since it has ABS, you really should do a scan bleed to push air out of the modulators, which you can't get 100 percent by traditionally bleeding as was shown. Using a bench bleed for the MC also saves time, especially if it is located in a tight spot.

Another possible reason for a spongy pedal is that the brake fluid might have been boiled a number of times in the past, thus causing the formation of bubbles in the fluid. As brake fluid ages it's wet and dry boiling points decline and a hard braking from high speeds might generate enough heat to boil the fluid. That was a problem I had years ago on a Porsche, necessitating the use of special high-temp brake fluid.

Those days are over. You'll need a $1300+ scan tablet like the one he uses to bleed the system these days. Soon, if not already, you'll have to do a 'relearn procedure' even after changing brake pads now.
Also check the calipers if they are old rusty and probably seized up, your pedal may go almost to the floor before you get any anemic braking. I had two cars that did this. New front calipers and wow what a difference. You can easily spot weak or seized calipers by rust on the rotors where it should be shiny.
Awesome video tonight scotty, but one thing, NEVER PUT YOUR FINGERS OVER A HYDRAULIC LINE TO BLEED. Same goes with an air compressor too. A guy I grew up with passed away 15 years ago by hydraulic injection. Put his finger on to bleed and it was enough pressure to pierce the skin and inject fluid in his bloodstream. Dead in minutes
When I heard Rav4 and Serious problem in the same sentence, I for sure thought it was going to be the 2007-2008 model that burns a quart of oil every 500 miles.
Scotty, I had a leak into the booster like the one shown in your video. Of course I being slow on the up take, didn't figure it out until my booster started to leak air into my intake manifold and the engine started to run rough. The brake fluid ate a nice little hole into the rubber bellows. This was on a Ford and the booster was shot, and it didn't stop worth a flip either. This is after adding a quart or two to the reservoir. When I noticed it low, I should have investigated like you did.
Scotty, have you encountered same generation Toyotas as the one in the video, with a V6 however, blowing head gaskets? Ours blew after 78K kms, luckily a sealer worked and plugged it. At 80 something K kms the water pump went out. Talk about Toyota quality. The interior is very cheap. We regret buying this Rav4
Once fixed a hard line leak on a car, after it sat waiting for about 6 months. Bled the lines, and shoot, the pedal goes to the floor still, but hey, no leaks, and there's some breaking force. Seals on the Master went completely bad while sitting. After putting in the new one, I realized how far the pedal sank before.
Scotty, I have a 2019 rav4 front wheel drive. The last time I took it to the dealership, it took 2.5 hours to do an oil change. I think they also messed up my computer. My car will not go into normal drive mode now. It only drives in eco mode, which is not great on the highway. Plus now it is my understanding that only toyota can diagnose their cars. My local car shop said they did not have the proper diagnostic tool.
i had similar problems with my lexus is. always thought it was air, so i bleed it several times and nothing. i changed the master cylinder, nothing. i changed one front caliper, still nothing. then i found out it was the rear brakes. the guide pins got stuck from the rust because the lube dried out and i had the car sitting for a few weeks. i had to use a heat gun and good ol' hammering to unstuck it.

@@ByDesign333 i never thought of the rear brakes since it takes longer to wear out than the front. i forgot to mention, i even changed the front brake lines. that's how i learned my lesson. the master cylinder and caliper i bought were all used parts from ebay, so it wasn't that expensive. try to check the caliper pistons too, if the rubber boots are worn out or torn apart, dirt can get in and it will also cause it to seize. good luck on your fix.
Hey Scotty 2014 Altima been golden, has 49,500 miles on it now needs breaks and the tires are worn out. Driving myself nuts, keep it and put maintenance into it or trade it in for something new and pay the negative equity. Either way between tranny drain/fill, radiator drain/fill, tires, breaks, and any other little things going to be the same money as the negative equity I have on the car. Owned it for 30 months, first owner was a retiree.
I would try and have a towel catch any fluid but if not spray degreaser and flush with water or the paint will eventually bubble and rust the metal ...i have used synthetic brake fluid and when it leaked it ate the paint just like the regular stuff.
I had a Mercury Tracer, that developed a low brake pedal. Ford couldn't find the problem. I went to a friend/mechanic who replaced the two front brake hoses. Problem solved. The hoses were expanding under pressure.

In my personal experience...it's the damned master cylinder. It wears out at about 100 to 150k miles.

That is what I would have done, it is much easier to bench bleed.
yep..I bench bled mine before install..lots of air in there and it takes a surprising amount of times to get it all out..

we had a similar issue with our 2006 Camry 3 different mechanics 3 different solutions, fixed by adjusting the e-brake.

Just fixed my caliper on 03 Rav4 for some reason it had rust in the pins and it locked up on one side pretty much had to loosen it and get more grease on the pins to get it to move otherwise my brakes were so spongy. Works great now!!

@@s13one80 refused to fix mine because it "only" burned 3/4 of a quart per 1200 miles on their test. Junk.
2005 Prius with 150k burns 1 quart per 3000 miles too but gets over 30 mpg giving it full throttle all of the time you’re not squealing the ABS! People will still tailgate you and play bumper cars until your car gets totaled (my story anyway...)

@@Suction_ Toyota refused to repair/replace my cousin's engine in her Rav4 because the amount of oil it was burning was "within the accepted level" for safe vehicle operation. Toyota has great attorneys and PR personnel to cover up something so blatantly flawed.

Also these Rav 4s have a major issue with their Transmission. My mother’s Rav 4 at 47,000 miles had a transmission failure that Toyota won’t replace.
What year is it? I have 2019 and it is having the same issue
MrKinglyon2010 it’s a 2011, these transmission issues seem to be going as far back since 2006 models
you forgot to remove the brake master cylinder fluid before loosening the brake lines and need to be cautious of spilling the fluid on painted surfaces.
100% and place a rag underneath it to catch any flood that may remain.
Interesting Scotty...my '03 Suburban has a similar issue. No easily identifiable leaks, not adding brake fluid, but spongy brake pedal...going to replace the Master Cylinder...thanks

The beauty is it’s only a $70 part. I have 2010 corolla with 170k miles and the only thing I’ve had to replace is the horn speaker. It’s a $15 part that took 15 minutes to install
@@xdunejunkiex Also 2010 Corolla S here w/160K. All that's ever been done is regular maintenance up until now (oil, filters, brakes).
I don't think the tranny fluid has even been changed and it looks ok, but I'm going to change it anyway, esp since Scotty said Toyotas don't shed clutch material like other vehicles and it was ok to do even at this point.
Problems now: Crankshaft seal has a VERY slow leak at the timing cover (going to live with it), it's got a slight idle issue I'm obsessing over, but can live with if I have to, and the slightly spongy brakes which I'll probably address with new MC, but could also live with if I have to.
This is the first car I've ever owned with no issues at this mileage and the ones I have presently can be lived with. And I've owned A LOT of cars!

Hi Scotty, Love your videos. In my experience, if the there are no leaks, it is the master cylinder. When I was young, they could cost as much as half the car. My car is a 1996 Landcruiser. Pedal went down, typical Toyota, took years to be apparent and never actually failed. Fitted the new master cylinder, bled the system to the new colour. Next week, pedal was down again. Checked everything again, re watched all the Utube videos, re bled all the points, a bunch of air came out, now perfect. They are mysterious, but it is Toyota, it will work and you can solve any problems. The most mysterious thing about them is, how do they keep working for so long. I mean 20 years old and a very capable machine, and still one of the best cars I have ever driven.
These new videos are great and give good lessons and tips on diagnosing and repairing cars. Keep up the good work!!

Yup. Then just 1 squirt with the lines loose and a rag to catch the fluid. Less mess and brake fluid can damage paint and stuff.
I recently did this on my wife's 07 Rav. Her master cylinder failed completely and she hit the car in front of her. The next press on the pedal and it acted fine again to carefully drive it home. Scary.
TIP: If your pedal ever goes right to the floor, let it up and press again. Don't just press harder like she did.
I've always used a bench bleeder kit too.. Sometimes they come with the new master cylinder just two plastic fittings and two small hoses.. what I'm curious to know is did he have to bleed the brake lines at the wheels and if so what about the ABS module I mean I know his fancy scan tool can probably do that but he didn't show it.
@@joecostantino3684 I was thinking the same thing. Since he opened the whole system, he would have to bleed at the wheels because air got into the lines. Also, since it has ABS, you really should do a scan bleed to push air out of the modulators, which you can't get 100 percent by traditionally bleeding as was shown. Using a bench bleed for the MC also saves time, especially if it is located in a tight spot.

Another possible reason for a spongy pedal is that the brake fluid might have been boiled a number of times in the past, thus causing the formation of bubbles in the fluid. As brake fluid ages it's wet and dry boiling points decline and a hard braking from high speeds might generate enough heat to boil the fluid.
That was a problem I had years ago on a Porsche, necessitating the use of special high-temp brake fluid.

How many miles on it? He has videos on those symptoms, could just already need a throttle-body cleaning just be careful of the Mass-air-flow sensor.

Those days are over. You'll need a $1300+ scan tablet like the one he uses to bleed the system these days. Soon, if not already, you'll have to do a 'relearn procedure' even after changing brake pads now.

Also check the calipers if they are old rusty and probably seized up, your pedal may go almost to the floor before you get any anemic braking. I had two cars that did this. New front calipers and wow what a difference. You can easily spot weak or seized calipers by rust on the rotors where it should be shiny.
Awesome video tonight scotty, but one thing, NEVER PUT YOUR FINGERS OVER A HYDRAULIC LINE TO BLEED. Same goes with an air compressor too. A guy I grew up with passed away 15 years ago by hydraulic injection. Put his finger on to bleed and it was enough pressure to pierce the skin and inject fluid in his bloodstream. Dead in minutes
When I heard Rav4 and Serious problem in the same sentence, I for sure thought it was going to be the 2007-2008 model that burns a quart of oil every 500 miles.

Scotty, I had a leak into the booster like the one shown in your video. Of course I being slow on the up take, didn't figure it out until my booster started to leak air into my intake manifold and the engine started to run rough. The brake fluid ate a nice little hole into the rubber bellows. This was on a Ford and the booster was shot, and it didn't stop worth a flip either. This is after adding a quart or two to the reservoir. When I noticed it low, I should have investigated like you did.
Scotty, have you encountered same generation Toyotas as the one in the video, with a V6 however, blowing head gaskets?
Ours blew after 78K kms, luckily a sealer worked and plugged it.
At 80 something K kms the water pump went out.
Talk about Toyota quality.

Once fixed a hard line leak on a car, after it sat waiting for about 6 months. Bled the lines, and shoot, the pedal goes to the floor still, but hey, no leaks, and there's some breaking force.
Seals on the Master went completely bad while sitting. After putting in the new one, I realized how far the pedal sank before.
My dad had his own garage behind the house much like Scotty. Good grief, I sure pumped a bunch of brake pedals in my youth as he bled them!
Careful leaking brake fluid all over engine bay and paint. It is quite corrosive and can strip/damage paint and lead to rust

Scotty, I have a 2019 rav4 front wheel drive. The last time I took it to the dealership, it took 2.5 hours to do an oil change. I think they also messed up my computer. My car will not go into normal drive mode now. It only drives in eco mode, which is not great on the highway. Plus now it is my understanding that only toyota can diagnose their cars. My local car shop said they did not have the proper diagnostic tool.
My relatives RAV4 keeps having unintended acceleration. OTOH, it only happens with one driver...

i had similar problems with my lexus is. always thought it was air, so i bleed it several times and nothing. i changed the master cylinder, nothing. i changed one front caliper, still nothing. then i found out it was the rear brakes. the guide pins got stuck from the rust because the lube dried out and i had the car sitting for a few weeks. i had to use a heat gun and good ol' hammering to unstuck it.

@@ByDesign333 i never thought of the rear brakes since it takes longer to wear out than the front. i forgot to mention, i even changed the front brake lines. that's how i learned my lesson. the master cylinder and caliper i bought were all used parts from ebay, so it wasn't that expensive. try to check the caliper pistons too, if the rubber boots are worn out or torn apart, dirt can get in and it will also cause it to seize. good luck on your fix.

Hey Scotty 2014 Altima been golden, has 49,500 miles on it now needs breaks and the tires are worn out. Driving myself nuts, keep it and put maintenance into it or trade it in for something new and pay the negative equity. Either way between tranny drain/fill, radiator drain/fill, tires, breaks, and any other little things going to be the same money as the negative equity I have on the car. Owned it for 30 months, first owner was a retiree.
Brake fluid eats paint 🎨
The non-synthetic brake fluid does, but many of the newer synthetic brake fluids don't attack paint like the non-synthetic brake fluids can.
I would try and have a towel catch any fluid but if not spray degreaser and flush with water or the paint will eventually bubble and rust the metal ...i have used synthetic brake fluid and when it leaked it ate the paint just like the regular stuff.
There are some synthetic brake fluids that can damage paint, but the newer cars that use DOT 5 fluid don't have that problem. DOT 5.1 might though.
Jim Jungle ; my DOT4 does it learned the hard way and i wiped it right off as soon as i did it, but it made the paint peel off !

I had a Mercury Tracer, that developed a low brake pedal. Ford couldn't find the problem. I went to a friend/mechanic who replaced the two front brake hoses. Problem solved. The hoses were expanding under pressure.
