Avalugg may be bad, but at least it's not hisuian-avalugg!
But why is that?

There are 2 rock/ice types, both of which are defensive, completely ignoring the fact that both rock and ice are offensive types

Actually, now that it’s in the meta game, it’s probably an upgrade from regular Avalugg. It’s a pretty good trick room attacker, having a variable and hard-hitting movepool with Crunch, Ice Fang, Mountain Gale, Stone Edge, and Body Press being mainstays. And plus, if you’re about to get hit by a fighting move, you can tera ghost and get a free recover, curse, or iron defense off.

Imagine if mountain gale was an ice version of salt cure and instead of doing more vs water and steel, it did more vs water and ground.
Still won’t be as good as the salt, but anything would be better than a low acc move with flinch chance on a slow mon.

@@SoftwareLearningify Havalugg is actually pretty decent against Lando-T, due to good attack and ice spinner. Gastro and Quag also aren't a big deal for Havalugg, though the move would help. The move would most likely help to punish the easy switchins to Havalugg, and wear them down.

Loved the analysis! I know this comment is a bit late, but I’d argue Avalugg-H is better suited (though not necessarily good) for doubles than singles since it’s more geared toward sweeping under trick room. With that being said, you’re still right about Ice/Rock being a horrendous typing. Avalugg-H is overly reliant on terastalization to patch it up, which is a problem since you can only tera one Pokémon.

It kind of is? It gains 10 speed, so its actually worse in trick room in that regard. Though it also gains 10 more attack, and rock and ice are both really good offensive types. And with terra'ing Hisuian Avalugg, its low special defense makes it very risky to tera, though if you do want to terra, it definitely does improve Hisuian Avalugg.

@blip_exists If I may, I think that having 10 points more base speed making it worse in trick room, while technically true, is nitpicking at best, as a base speed stat of 38 is still awfully slow, and there have been faster Pokemon that players have used in trick room, such as Ice Rider Calyrex, for example. The bigger issue I have here is that it doesn't help it in any meaningful way, given you're still getting outsped by practically everything anyways, hence why I don't think it's worth fussing over too much if you intend to use it in trick room
