The “After” is more kid friendly and makes sense, but the original is much funnier to me because they still say they’re preparing to decontaminate the building and then just blow it off the face of the planet

Not to mention the paper flying away from the explosion. Kinda glad they removed the paper cause otherwise it just be a random background joke that just doesn't add up to the giant plasma force field.

After seeing the original so many times as a kid. It’s so surreal seeing the main characters of the series walk away from an actual explosion.
to me the alter one works more as it Mike and Sully amazed and more taken back how The CDA have more fancy weaponry and taken back how well they came prepared than the last time it happen
It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes. I watched this film a lot as a kid and seeing that green dome appear always made me scratch my head.
So that’s why mikes girl was all dirty
I think the dome makes sense too. When you consider "decontamination", you consider the dome as either trapping everything inside to be cleaned before release or you think of how it's supposed to administer some kind of electric shock that kills all the supposed germs. I think Celia having burns the next day does make sense with the latter if you ask me.
Decontaminate has the same vibe as being disappeared in a foreign country with the first version

The fur physics in Monsters Inc in 2001 were jaw dropping. Never saw anything like it in computer animation at the time. It's still very impressive today.
The explosion is funny, but I like how the updated version has the CDA use an energy barrier/cleanser. It shows off their technological might, which is ironic because up to this point they still haven’t discovered that children aren’t actually toxic to monsters, which is funny in its own right…
The plasma thing is the canon version of events, as the first episode of Monsters at Work reveals that Harryhausen's is still in service within two days of the incident, and that Mike and Sulley received a lifetime ban (that was eventually lifted).
fun fact: the restaurant is named after the animator Ray Harryhausen
More like a retcon because the plasma explosion was used to censorship the canon explosion. Monsters at work come out like 20 years later only reinforcing and justifying the retcon! The regular explosion is canon!

To be honest I always assumed that the plasma dome was for safely containing the explosion like the metal dome they blew the sock up in earlier, and the detonation just happened off-screen.

@lukasmiller486 well there was a bug tsunami in Japan a while back and a lot of games got canceled during that time because they took place in a ravaged destroyed version of Japan and it made some companies feel uncomfortable after the fact
On one hand, the explosion was funnier.
On the other hand, the giant ray shield makes more sense for decontamination.
imagine if there was a director's cut with the explosion scene.
As a kid I always thought it was weird that a force field would produce any wind at all, so much that sully's hair would move that aggressively, now it all makes sense
To be honest, I actually think the radioactive dome works better, largely because it's more disturbing to think that the CDA has access to tools that massive and outlandish for something so unprecedented. I also think trapping the nearby witnesses with the dome is a better way to imply that the CDA's "decontamination tests" took a long time than when using a typical explosion. (e.g. Celia being so injured and upset the following day) I know if I had to endure abrasive tests for a long time, I'd be pretty miserable.
I think it works better because if they have nukes?
1. How is their world different from ours?
2. If they had other sources of power? Why is their a energy crisis? That would be like us running out of electricity.
@@noahbusch7542 I’d assume that scare power is a lot more effective and eco friendly than most other options, remember there’s not that many scare floors yet they can still power a metropolis

The first one is funnier just due to how surreal it is to see an explosion go off from the usual Dome I have seen, to where it feels like an edit.
its also cool to see the second version of the scene has evidence of a rushed out render - there are overall less shadows and the ones that are there have harsher edges
its particularly noticeable on the police chopper, the hazmat mask, and Sully's fur is more lit with ambient light in the censored version, where as the original has more volume and casts more shadows on itself

I also noticed that everything on the ground still rolls away from the shockwave in both versions, but the piece of paper that floats past Mike at 0:07 was removed.
Yeah but you have to remember at the time tv quality was extremely low than it is today so the editors didn't need to really stress about it
To be fair, explosions to us are more common so from our perspective, we would be more freaked out by a giant plasma dome than a simple explosion

The final version actually makes more sense, because Before blowing up/quarantining the restaurant, the agent says, “building clear, ready for decontamination”. How can you decontaminate a building by blowing it up? That’s not decontaminating it, that’s destroying it.
I think that's the joke? That the CDA solves every problem by blowing shit up, like with the sock at the beginning
@@CaptainJZH The sock is understandable because that’s an object from the human world is considered foreign to monsters and must be destroyed immediately. However, in this case, this was a restaurant within the monster world. Why blow it up when they could simply quarantine it?

Their reaction makes perfect sense in the original cut. This is still mind blowing to see though because I'm so used to that huge green aura being seen.
I knew about 9/11 changing the chase scene from Lilo and Stitch, but this is new to me.

This explains why the company bag that Sully used for carrying Boo, that "found on the scene" by CDA, has burn marks when they presented to Waternoose the next day.

The force field fits the tone more, at least to me. They vaporized a sock yes but they didn't kill George, instead giving him a thorough (and painful) decontamination. Closing off access and combing through the area is more logical than straight up blowing it up and spreading toxic "kid" particals through the air.
Man Harryhausen's really blew up after the news of a kid being discovered there
another way you can tell this is real is by looking at sully's fur, you can still see it being blown by the force of the explosion in the post 9/11 version, his fur wouldn't react that way to a forcefield

I think a Plasma bomb is a lot better than a regular explosion. It makes him more whimsical of the monster world.

Fun Fact: In earlier versions of the film, the CDA was supposed to blow up the restaurant as a containment effort - a decision that was reworked in the wake of 9/11.

Idk, explosions are usually used as jokes or running gags (look no further than SpongeBob)
I simply can't believe this one...
The before felt more like a Waco moment than a decontamination.
You know, there could’ve been some people during the 9/11 when it actually happened to it in person, and saw it all happening. And some probably had plans on watching this movie, and if they saw this particular scene in theaters, they probably would’ve been reliving the 9/11 moment under a different scenario.

Guys, now I remember, in the scene where the c.d.a. is investigating monsters inc, three agents are with mr. waternoose shows him the company bag, and if they see the bag looks burnt, demonstrating the existence of this deleted scene.
It's a shame it wasn't used despite the circumstances. However, the pocket-found that was later shown to Waternoose by the CDA would have caused some surprise

In the before 9/11 scene, the CDA just exploded Harryhausen's. The after is *way* more child friendly then the before scene
Wow I didn’t knew this. As a kid I was confused watching the plasma dome but the explosion is more realistic and more funny. Obviously they had to censure it because the movie released 2 months after the 2001’s 9/11 terrorist attacks

Which one do YOU prefer?
I prefer the explosion because with the force field, certain things that happen after make no sense. Such as the burnt bag the CDA recovered and Celia's injuries. As a kid, I didn't understand how the force field could burn that bag or injure Celia, but with the explosion it makes more sense. Plus, the CDA were shown blowing up a human sock earlier, so it makes more sense that they'd blow up the restaurant.
At least they got as far away from blowing up Harryhausen’s as possible

At first I always thought Pixar wouldn't allow explosions in G-rated movies until Incredibles (which is rated PG), but I soon realized there are explosions briefly in Toy Story 2 (when Buzz blows up all Zyclops bots in the opening scene) and Finding Nemo (when the mines exploded after the shark scene)
