    Here I am, 1 year after I posted below, still using your video on removing the printhead. After removing the printhead, and giving it a good cleaning in lukewarm water, and re-installing it, it printed again up to this point. But, now, I forgot how I did it so I am glad this video is still up so I can do it again. Thank you again, very much.

    This video and another one from another guy helps me from buying another printer which would cost at least $150. I used this video to open and clean the printhead first but it didn't work. So I ordered a printhead and replaced it. I made a mistake first time that it didn't work . I reopened it again and reinstalled and it then works! I paid $32 for the new new printhead. My printer is HP 6978. Thanks

    I've been in printers over 20 (OK 25 yrs) & never knew they were this much to disassemble. No wonder it's cheaper to buy a new one vs repair, when labor is $35-50 /hr. Shop repair vs Big Box. Great video. (I know, newer cartridges are smaller so they recap their costs faster. I remember every few days, some Canon's print test page to keep lines fresh.)

    Great video. Took everything apart and got the printhead out. Once out, I used 70% rubbing alcohol to clean / soak the print head and remove all of the ink inside. Took about 30 minutes or rinsing / pouring. Then I blew with compressed air and let dry overnight. Put back together the next day and printer works fine.
    I also cleaned out the messy area where you will find lots of old ink that looks like grease. Once printer was disassembled, I took printer outside and put on its side so water would run out as I cleaned it. The electronic board was on top so as to avoid getting wet. Then I took a waterpik and rinsed the entire area, Caution - used ink goes everywhere. There is a small sled that moves to the front to cover the printhead when the printer is turned off. I made sure that those rubber pieces were clean. Blew with compressed air and let sit overnight to dry.
    Difficult areas.
    1. When you put the scanner cover back on the back right has to be slotted into the glass plate cover before you put the piece back in.
    2. The plastic guide bar for the printer head. The dot and the arrow go on the right side, arrow facing back. Must do the left side first, then feed the ribbon through the print head to the other side. Then compress spring on left side to get over the hook on the right. Can go the other way since the left side has barbs on it.
    3. Front LCD cover plate. It removes from the top right first. Then press the tab on the bottom left as you pull and rotate counter clockwise. Installation the same way. Bottom left first, the rotate clockwise and it should snap back in.
    I have a second printer that I will clean next week and try to post photos.

    Thank you very much for this video! My sorrowful HP6950 will leave me now, but I wanted to keep the printhead and some other parts, because we have more printers of this kind. BTW, clogged printheads can be cleaned with brush cleaner liquid (any paint solving liquid will do, but not Acetone!). Then, rinse with printhead liquid (or water/ethanol 50/50), then rinse with either printhead liquid / ink 50/50, then re-insert cartidges.

    There was a couple spots where further description would be helpful. For example, the angle for pulling the hook to detach it from the scanner. The angle for pulling off the screen to not break the internal clips. I would also like to know how to access the ink waste reservoir. Can you replace the reservoir for this printer? I haven't seen any videos on it yet. My next question, I accidentally placed the wrong ink within the cartridges. My printer still worked but cyan was plugged up (hence why I had to take the print head out). I refilled the cartridges with the new ink that is supposed to be compatible with the printer. Should I replace the cartridges? Or simply drain the cartridges of the old ink and add in the new?

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Thank you for the remarks. Regarding ink, it is probably best to replace the cartridges. If you want to keep using it, you will have to flush it with distilled water many times. I haven't reppace ink waste tank on this printer. I have a similar printer for a project and if I'm able to replace ink waste tank, I will post a video.

    Hi thank you very much for showing how to safely remove the parts. I have a problem and I would be grateful if you could give me your opinion. I have the HP 6950 model which I assume is almost the same on the inside. My problem is that the it doesn't print any black colour. The inks are genuine and new from HP Instant Ink. I did all the automatic cleaning tasks the printers offers but nothing happened. I searched all over the web and read about cleaning the printhead. I used a damp cloth that absorbed the residue and then I used cleaning liquid inside each silver printhead hole. I even used an air-compressor to remove all the clogged colour left inside. Even though the other colours are printing properly as they did before, the black is still not printing even after the cleaning I performed. Do you think that removing the printhead and cleaning it out of the printer would give any positive outcome? Do you suggest replacing the printhead? Do you have any cleaning tips? Any help would be very much appreciated because I am out warranty and it may not worth sending the printer for repair. Thanks.

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I apologize for delayed response. It is possible that black nozzle is clogged badly or is "fried". Usually when one of the nozzles fails electronically, the printhead error pops up, so I think you may need to pull the printhead out and do some manual soaking and cleaning. And you are sure the cartridge is good, right?

    • @hadjiperis
      @hadjiperis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@303electronics Hi and thanks for the reply. There is no error at all coming from the printer. It just keeps "printing" as normal but there is no black colour. The cartridges are brand new genuine from Instant Ink. I noticed that this started happening before the brand new cartridges. However I assumed because the ink level of the previous black one was very low I thought that it was over. I found a genuine spare part HP Printhead for HP 6950 on Amazon for about 60€ but the same printer now sells for 90€ if you buy it new from a computer shop. I am in a dilemma - The printer lasted for 3 years and in total I had printed about 750 pages. It's disappointing.

    Because you tried to help, I just wanted to update you on my complete tear down of my HP 6968 with the stuck carriage to the right. There were no cracked gears found anywhere. No physical explanation could be found for the problem. I suspect the optical reader that controls the movement of the problematic sled down below, was not reading accurately thus causing the sled to stop prematurely. That little 1 inch square PC board sitting on top at the right end controls the sled's Optical Reader directly beneath it. Since it would complete one cycle perfectly then malfunction on the second cycle, I suspect the programing on that PC board became corrupt. I think my printer is non-repairable! Thanks again.

    Helpful video for taking apart the printer, thank you. I'm getting an error code, 0x610004a, on my 2-year-old 6968 model. This is apparently due to an ink catching "tray" that sits on the bottom right of the unit under the ink cartridge carriage. The tray is not dropping down properly to allow the carriage to move freely and print. I can use a screwdriver to turn the small plastic cogs on the right of the carriage bar which moves that tray towards the back of the unit and out of the way so the carriage is free to move, but as soon as I power the unit back on, it resets, the carriage goes back to its "resting" spot, gets held up and that error code reappears. Any suggestions for repairing this would be appreciated. Was a good printer up until this point. Worthless at the moment. HP support was of no help, all they wanted to do was take all my contact info, (to resell I'm sure), and try to sell me a "discounted" printer. Thank you.

I don''t think it's a salvageable operation unless you're willing to get really messy and replace a bunch of tiny parts

      Oh ok. So it's grease? Yeah I noticed it had some type of white pad underneath it. So I wanted to make sure before I did anything just in case there was a reason for it being that way. But I can definitely tell that ink splattered around that area too.

    Thanks for posting such a thorough video. I have a 6968 and the black nozzles of the printhead were thoroughly clogged. I've unclogged many hp printheads, but this was a first 6900 series and I was able to follow your instructions to remove the printhead which I cleaned and reinstalled, but the problem I'm having is the the carriage is now slamming all the way to the right HARD. Then it tries to push farther right before rifling back left and getting stuck 1/2 way producing a carriage error. I did not remove the encoder strip like you did in the video. I left it in place. The nozzle was clogged before disassembly but the carriage moved fine without issues. Is it possible I damaged the encoder strip or maybe didn't align it with the carriage properly?

    Carriage removal is much easier with one screw loosened at 11:11. Then the tensioner will move to allow belt to grow and get over the rim of pulley. You're trying to move the tensioner here, but it won't without being loosened.
    TIME POINTS for review to reassemble:
    12:12 carriage
    10:10 carriage rod
    11:55 print head wiring
    5:45 print head springs point outwards

    I have a HP OfficeJet 7612 turned it on carriage jam came up so I inspected for anything in the way to keep the carriage from being able to move and found what was blocking it in is a flat plastic piece, which looks like a small clip on cover, so I removed it and the printer is working but I am a bit worried about re-fixing this piece back on.

    I have an office jet pro 6970 that I replaced the black ink after a warning indicating it would need replacing. After replacing only the black ink cartridge the printer stopped printing black. Even after many attempts to clean the print head from the menu, the other colors would print on the test paper but not the black. I also tried to print a copy of page and the paper was blank. I followed the recommendations on the HP site and unplugged the printer from the power outlet for at least 60 seconds and that did not work either. Manually cleaning the printhead with alcohol did not work either and I repeated the process many times. I have come across an article saying there is a hardware circuit that stops the black from printing but it did not give any details or information how to resolve that problem. I was contemplating the idea of buying a replacement printhead and installing it myself but not sure if that would make a difference.

    Again, the panel displayed a blank white screen. I played w buttons and checked ribbon cable connections but nothing.
    I replaced old battery w another NEW 2032 battery by dismantling a 3rd time. After putting it back together, and making sure that the ribbon cables were correctly put back together, the panel is still displaying a white blank screen.
    Is there a reset button on the back of the panel or anywhere after changing the CMOS battery? Any help from anybody would be appreciated. I can scan using the computer software and that works. If i try to print a report from the pc hp 6978 software, I a get a "device is busy" message. Apparently, the menu is hung up after connecting the power on. Any ideas?????

      I just moved back the "carriage lock mechanism" that is located under the carriage. You can move it with a screw driver by pushing it back. You can have it unlocked by opening the cartridge door and unplugging the printer. The carriage releases after you remove the clamps on both sides of the rod and release the driver belt. Please let me know if this was what you needed or if I didn't explain it.

      First, thanks for some great videos, explaining things clearly in plain english & a lot of patience!!
      I'm having a somewhat similar problem with a 6978. I keep getting 'paper jam'' error even after clearing the paper path & checking it multiple times & the printhead is frozen to the right & will not budge. I've tried powering off & on multiple times.
      It actually started with a tree limb falling across a power wire somewhere. Power was lost quickly & apparently cleanly & was restored in a similar manor. The printer was idle & plugged into a power protection outlet. I have contacted the electric company with no help. I have not contacted the outlet company yet.
      I am comfortable with a V-O-M meter good with a soldering iron, so any voltage checks would also be appreciated.
      My only problem is that I'm 72 yrs old & not as good as I once was & have a very limited supply of cash or I would just replace it!!

      Hi. The problem is that the clear strip in the bavk of the printhead needs to be in that sensor area. Make sure it is dry there too. The timing strip is on about 3 millimeters in width and is attached from one side of the printer to the other. It controls the carriage when printing. Since you removed printhead, you misplaced the strip. It just needs to be repositioned inside of the sensor. Let me know if you were able to figure that out. Thanks.

    I have this exact printer, and I'm here because it seems my yellow has gotten clogged, so I'm looking for a solution. When my HP Officejet Pro 6978 works as it should, it outputs great quality prints and does so pretty quickly. However, when I haven't printed something in over a week, it seems it always has to wake up and go through this lengthy maintenance process before it actually starts printing what I need, which is pretty tedious to say the least. With that said, I would HIGHLY recommend against purchasing this printer or any HP printer based on this platform design. First off, the ink cartridges are among the most expensive on the market. For a set of genuine HP 902XL cartridges, (XL meaning the larger ones that hold more ink) you're looking at right around $100, and even on Amazon or Walmart a full set runs around $100. Then there's the fact that this printer absolutely BURNS through ink like a fighter jet through fuel. I don't think I've ever gotten more than 50 or so pages from a single XL black cartridge. We do only occasional printing in my home, never for any sort of business purposes, and mostly for stuff like an occasional picture our son has drawn, and maybe a couple dozen pages of text documents a month for doctors visits or food recipes. At best a set of these cartridges lasts us maybe 3 or 4 months. We easily go through $300 in cartridges a year in the four years we've owned this printer. I've lost track of how many times I've uttered the phrase "WTF, I swear I just replaced these cartridges!!!"

      Agree! I fixed my printing problem but then I remembered how expensive the ink cartridges are! For what I've spent on ink, I could've bought a few brand new printers! I'm looking into a tank printer where you literally fill it with cheap liquid ink when you need to and it lasts a long long time.

    I just bought Hp officejet pro 8160.. it has been sitting in storage and is dusty. It says it doesn't recognize printhead. . What should I do?

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try to remove printhead and clean the contact area. Since it has been sitting in storage for awhile some ink may have spilled on the side and is interfering with the contacts between prinhead and carrier.

    I have this printer and it stopped printing black ink. Like, zero output. Ran clean print head about 30 times this week, nada. New cartridge, genuine HP from Staples, nada. Tried pushing alcohol through the head and used compressed air to clear as much as possible, nada.
    This lead me to your video.
    Took print head out and brushed with denatured alcohol and a toothbrush, then wiped with microfiber, nada. Any ideas at all? I'm going crazy.

      I did the same thing, I am curious if it has to do with the encoder timing belt? If there is a wrong way to put that back or not.. I tried flipping it upside down also... still nothing... Printer gives me one or more cartridges are missing or damaged error, yet never did before until after I took apart to run water through the print heads
