  • This 09 Lancer with the 2.0 engine was towed in for a no start condition. Diagnosis of the starter control circuit leads to starter replacement. I found it necessary to loosen the intake manifold from the cylinder head.

    Great vid, just replaced my starter, same corroded wire. It's a lead from the solenoid to the brushes. New starter for $2 part because they couldn't be bothered to insulate the wire. The trick to get the starter out from behind the manifold is to rotate it as you pull it out of the bell housing and let the back end drop down and it comes out vertical. I didn't need to remove any brackets.

      Thanks for the tip. I think there may be a couple intake manifold variations depending on the year or even build date. There have been reports of being able to remove without the manifold being moved but believe me I tried everything on this. Could also be a variation on the oil filter housing not sure.

    If it comes back for the battery dying (slow leak) it is usually the Bluetooth module (located in the dash over the glove box)

    @3:50 ish he mentions removing the bracket, just remove the bolts that connect it to the plenum. If you look on the body just below the bracket, you'll see an out of place extrusion. This is a wedge point. Loosen the three bolts on the top of the plenum, the two mentioned above, and the one above the oil filter. Stick a wedge between the bracket and the wedge point. The starter will now wiggle out. Gotta undo and redo the connections at this point. If you try to do the connections where it's easy, it won't go back in.

    Does anyone know where he got the bracket from when he is showing the starter on the counter? I can’t find that bracket and my manifold still isn’t moving a single millimetre to get that starter out

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that bracket at 16:03 is directly below the throttle body seen at 13:40. There is also another brace seen briefly at 15:25 and 16:09 plus the bolts that hold the manifold to the cylinder head. HTH

      As near as I can tell it's internal in the engine ECM and not serviceable. 2.0 litre. ETACS-ECU

    Mine is a 2006 evo 9, I got a new battery, and i changed the starter along with the starter ignition relay. because I use to have to hit the starter to get it unstuck so it would turn on. But now when I try turning it on it still won’t start, and by the second time I try cranking it you’ll hear a click from the starter but it’ll suddenly drain the power. and then theres no power inside the car. I’m not sure what it could be any help?

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a loose ground cable. Check the battery connections first. Then follow the ground cable from the battery to the engine. Take the connection apart at the engine and clean it. Make sure the body ground is good as well.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The body grounds are under the battery tray. See 18:30 in this video if this is the same as your Evo

  • @imagingteam
    @imagingteam ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, same issue with my lancer. Could it also be an immobilizer or ignition switch issue? Saw that you checked the ignition switch in the scanner so I assume that's how you can tell it wasnt the ignition switch?

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to test for power being sent to the control terminal of the starter when it's not cranking. If it's an immobilizer issue you should have a code for that. Alternately you can test the stater by jumping pins 3 and 5 at the starter relay shown at 5:39 in the video. Relay could be labeled 30 and 87 as well. Be sure it's not in gear if it's a standard. If it does not crank and you have power at the relay pin 3 or 30 ymthe starter is likely bad. If it does crank the reinstall that relay and listen for a click from it when trying to start. No click control circuit problem...

    • @imagingteam
      @imagingteam ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhillipBaileyanks! Tried to jump pins 3 and 5 and yup starter did turn and car cranked (didnt start). Just had it scanned recently and had an immobilizer short circuit code. Not sure if i should purse the immobilizer path...

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@imagingteam since it cranks by bypassing the starter relay then the problem is in the control side which could be the immobilizer. I would pursue the security issues. Does it have a remote car starter system that is aftermarket?

    • @imagingteam

      Could be lots of possibilities. Need to scan for codes, look at misfire data. Sparkplug, coils, injectors, mechanical problems in the engine. Start by reading the codes.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't legally disable the air bag system in most states or provinces. Most problems that illuminate the warning light will result in the system not working in a crash if it needed to. What's the actual problem with it?

    hey so I replaced the starter and still no start where should I start

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's tough. Is the starter clicking at all. Do you have power at the starter relay. Can you get it to crank by bypassing the starter relay two large terminals? Battery ok? Cable connections? Maybe faulty starter?

    • @PhillipBailey

      @@christianwiseman7252 at the starter relay listen and feel for the relay to click when someone turns the key to crank. If no click connect a test light between the two smaller terminals and try again. If the test light lights try a new relay. If it does not try moving the shifter to neutral instead of park. Use a piece of wire to bypass the starter relay by jumping the two larger terminals together. Make sure it's in park or if a manual in neutral.
