How To Shift Gears In An Automatic Car-Driving Tutorial

  • In this video, I show you how to shift gears in an automatic car. Your car must be equipped with a shift lever that has a gear selector option for this to work. You must put the car into drive, and press the lever to the side. Once you have put the automatic transmission into manual mode, you can press the gear selector up or down to switch gears! This is a great way to learn when to shift gears, and is the perfect thing to do before learning how to drive a car with a manual transmission.

With today's manumatic transmission, you can do it at low speed - just have to make sure the speed is very low. Even with older automatics that have 1 2 3 4 (D), you can shift down to 1st at maybe 10 mph or less. I had a 1997 Buick Riviera with a 4-speed automatic for something like 15 years. It never messed the transmission up. I now have a 1999 Mercedes C230 Kompressor with a 5-speed automatic and same situation.

So you're telling me that your automatic doesn't downshift to 1st when you go under 10mph? Because the Skoda DSG and the Vectra Auto I've driven both do, and driving my manual car I do this all the time, because right from the beginning you're taught to downshift while slowing down so as not to waste your brakes and to keep better control of the car.

@@corruptedpugs3313 It depends. If you're fully in automatic mode the car shifts by itself even if you apply throttle. If you're in manual mode (where you either shift manually with the gear lever or paddles behind the steering wheel) you can often shift while pressing the gas, but not always. If the revs are very high you might need to let of the gas while shifting.

**How to shift an automatic transmission when racing**: First, you put it in "L" for leave. Once you hit 30mph, you put it in "D" for drag. Then as you hit 70mph, shift it into "R" for race! Once it's towed out of the ditch, simply have the transmission repaired or replaced, then rinse & repeat! Lol

Not funny I didn't laugh. Your joke is so bad I would have preferred the joke went over my head and you gave up re-telling me the joke. To be honest this is a horrid attempt at trying to get a laugh out of me. Not a chuckle, not a hehe, not even a subtle burst of air out of my esophagus. Science says before you laugh your brain preps your face muscles but I didn't even feel the slightest twitch. 0/10 this joke is so bad I cannot believe anyone legally allowed you to be creative at all. The amount of brain power you must have put into that joke has the potential to power every house on Earth. Get a personality and learn how to make jokes, read a book. I'm not saying this to be funny I genuinely mean it on how this is just bottom barrel embarrassment at comedy. You've single handedly killed humor and every comedic act on the planet. I'm so disappointed that society has failed as a whole in being able to teach you how to be funny. Honestly if I put in all my power and time to try and make your joke funny it would require Einstein himself to build a device to strap me into so I can be connected to the energy of a billion stars to do it, and even then all that joke would get from people is a subtle scuff. You're lucky I still have the slightest of empathy for you after telling that joke otherwise I would have committed every war crime in the book just to prevent you from attempting any humor ever again. We should put that joke in text books so future generations can be wary of becoming such an absolute comedic failure. Im disappointed, hurt, and outright offended that my precious time has been wasted in my brain understanding that joke. In the time that took I was planning on helping kids who have been orphaned, but because of that you've waisted my time explaining the obscene integrity of your terrible attempt at comedy. Now those kids are suffering without meals and there's nobody to blame but you. I hope you're happy with what you have done and I truly hope you can move on and learn from this piss poor attempt

So a lot of people seem to be hating on the idea of manually shifting an automatic saying you should just get a manual or let the car shift for you. I looked up this subject because I don't like how my car is shifting automatically. Rubberbanding and overall not seeming like it is shifting when I want it to. I noticed I have the option so I wanted to make sure I don't hurt anything doing it manually. Anyway, people need to stop with all the negativity. There are many reasons to do something, so what if you don't find it logical? No one cares. Nice video.

No shame in it. Manual is an old fashioned way of driving which very few countries teach. America is 97% automatic cars. It’s just easier and less trouble. No stalling. Long distance driving is easy in an automatic. Manual really has hardly any benefits to it.

ski mask s manual has huge benefits. It allows you to be in control of the car a lot more - especially apparent when automatic cars keep you in low RPMs in High gears all the time, which especially gets annoying when you are going up hills (since it takes so long to accelerate). I wish manual transmission would stay around forever (thankfully it isn't going anywhere in EU atm)

Nope, some cars a different than others though. For example my parents 2009 Saturn outlook has the ability to shift manually, however that just controls the highest gear you allow it to go in. For example, you can upshift 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and so on. However if you try to take off in say 3rd, it automatically goes into 1 and then stops shifting once it gets to 3.

What I want to know what rev range should you be in to shift gears? What's the optimal rev range to be in when you downshift gears? Lets say you're up shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th and to 6th, is the optimal rev range to up shift 3,000 - 4,000 rpm? Same with downshifting from 5th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd to 1st, is the optimal rev range 2,000 - 3,000 rpm? Am I just over complicating it and you downshift and up shift whenever you want? I know its bad to red line but I've seen some drivers / bike riders bring it up to near red line to shift.
Another question, lets say you're in 4th gear and you need to brake pretty hard, does the car automatically downshift for you or you need to do it yourself? I'd assume it would just automatically do it. In case it doesn't can you come to a complete stop and downshift into first gear and take off again? I think in true manual cars you can skip gears like from 3rd to first and I'm pretty sure with a motorcycle you can't skip gears instead you can break then proceed to downshift to first or neutral in the sequential order.

    • @RandomGuy159951
      @RandomGuy159951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

By now this fella has found his answers I'm sure. For the rest:
      - In case of slamming on the breaks to bring the car to a complete stop while on a high gear (4th, 5th, 6th), forget the shifter all together focus on any steering wheel maneuvers and using the break pedal. The transmission will downshift itself back to 1st gear.
      - When is the "optimal" time to shift gears? The transmission is programmed to help you not mess your car up. If you want to upshift/downshift to a gear but the required speed is not present, the the car will ignore your shift. Speed tolerances for every one of your gears is listed in your owners manual. (For example: gear 1 can tolerate 0-40mph, 2 can tolerate 8-60mph, 3 can do 18-100mph, etc) Go look into that. Its different for every car. So long as the shift is performed inside the appropriate speed window for the desired gear, there is no right or wrong time to make a gear shift. If you want to save gas, you should access the highest gear as soon as possible by making every upshift as soon as possible. If you want to race someone next to you (and strain your engine&transmission for a bit), drop to the lowest possible gear depending on your speed and upshift at any high rpm before the red line. Don't race too often if you want to make your car last. Thats it have fun. 😉👌

      1.
If you are in manual shift mode, the instrument panel shows the gear you are in (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5).
      2.
Secondly, the driver should NOT let up on the gas pedal at all; keep your foot right where it is. Very smooth. Your only job is to use good judgement as to when to shift, pretty much the same as a stick shift car...around 2800 to 3500 RPM (or more, depending on what you are doing -- taking it easy or haulin butt).
