    These were $1800 back in 2008, and for the price they did not age well. The Late 2008 / Mid 2009 with an SSD is slightly more usable, but still limited by the soldered 2 GB RAM and prone to Northbridge failure.

I do the same as a hobby for over 10years now and most of the time Laptops and it surprises me every time how well most of them are usefull still today. Only cleaning the coolers, new thermalpaste and an cheap SSD. The only thing that suxxs is how hard it gets over the years to get to the components. Old alienware just remove 4 screws and you can reach everything, Last week a Toshiba from 2014 remove 16screws...turn around 8 screws...take out Keyboard...disconnect hundrets of these thin flat cables....Horror.

    Been building high end systems since the 90s, since even before CPUs needed heat sinks. I have always applied thermal paste in the way you showed, and my thermals have always been great. The whole (non-conductive) thermal paste application debate simply needs to end. Unless you're delidding and using liquid metal, pretty much any application method works as well as another. Put too little on and, yes you have a problem. Put too much on and you'll have a mess, but your thermals will still be fine. Err on the side of slightly too much and get on with your life. 🙂

    I'm really surprised the hinges are still good on these, they were a flawed design. Unless they've already been replaced but I don't think so. Apple official replacements were black but your machine looks to have original silver hinges. I'd be careful because when the hinges fail they often damage the case.

    "Setting it to the maximum brightness actually crashes the system"... How?

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      this is my question too. the screen obviously gets brighter. it's obviously not a power delivery issue or anything like that.
      the only interface the screen really has with the system is the software controlled parameters, such as reporting back what brightness it's set to. makes me wonder if the LCD controller ends up causing a buffer overflow/underflow or something. like maybe it uses an extra bit, or slightly different signalling in some other way, than the laptop firmware is expecting. maybe it's a slightly newer screen for a slightly newer macbook of the same size, or maybe it's an unofficial third party screen. so many questions!
      presumably the syslog would say, it usually notes an actual reason for a kernel panic when they occur. far more reliable than correlating trial-and-error to try and suss out a cause and effect. obviously that information isn't present in the video though.
      i've been baffled by "maximum brightness crashes entire system" for like 10 minutes at this point! given how gracefully osx (and unix in general) handles application crashes and threads trying to go out of bounds in memory and stuff, i've got to assume it's something low level causing the problem. that makes me think drivers, running in ring0 on the cpu. which brings me back to the software-reported brightness level. it's the uncertainty on what exactly is going wrong in that process, that is really bothering me, haha.

    Put an SSD in the faster one and install Windows 10. 10 runs very well on a a Core 2 Duo with at least 4 gig RAM. I put it on a 13 year old Compaq laptop, after upgrading it from a single core 32 bit Celeron to the fastest 64 bit Core 2 Duo it could take and upgrading to 4 gig RAM of a speed to match the increased bus speed of the new CPU. Laptop was a freebie, spent around $20 on CPU and RAM. Same story with a slightly newer Dell Inspiron 1525, though that one did cost me a few bucks at a yard sale.
    So how about it? Use Windows 10 to get more life out of old Intel CPU Macs after Apple has cut them off from current versions of OS X.

  • @damson3413
    @damson3413 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    third party displays will do stuff like that. it's likely the power consumption of the backlight at max brightness is different from a stock apple display, which may be causing a voltage rail to sag and dipping the power supply to other components in the machine, which *could* cause the kernel panic...
    As for the mac os issues, I'd suggest downloading a fresh copy of 10.7.5 direct from the app store and using a thumbdrive to install, either that or get deploystudio up and running with AutoDMG to build an updated 10.7.5 never booted os x image if the app store version isn't the latest.

    I have my Macbook Air 2015 and I love it, a simple laptop which just works. I'm using it for gaming emulations and doing Photoshops, just don't use it for video editing though.

    Hi I don't know if this would help but have you tried installing Linux on the 2 MacBooks? I had the same problem with my Dell laptop. I'm not a apple user so I don't know if this makes a difference or not. PoP OS is what I used and it has fixed the problem in it's debugging while in the install process. I hope this was useful in some way. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for the content! 👍

    Seems to me that you did practically nothing to fix the kennel panics except software tickles. No Ram check/swap, no disk check/swap, no temperature control checking, no motherboard checking, no Console reading... I can think of so much more to do. One does not just accept kernel panics: you've got to find the WHY and fix them. Kernel panics are not acts of God.

    • @psivewri
      @psivewri  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually determined the reason why they were getting kernel panics in the video. Without fitting the 'correct' displays, editing kext files or doing component level board repair it wasnt going to get fixed. These laptops are basically worthless and delving in deeper wouldn't be worth it.

    • @mhrobe
      @mhrobe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mmm, again, forgive me for insisting, but you did not determine the cause of the panics, you saw a mere symptom and called it quits. I think that you could have done much more sleuthing, but that 's just me I guess. Take care.

    • @psivewri
      @psivewri  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mhrobe For sure there is definitely more that could have been done, but releasing videos weekly and making them in my spare time doesn't allow for a whole heap of in depth repair. Thanks for the feedback!

    Dear Sir. I used to be a Machead forever. I switched to Windows at 10 because I hate Tim Cook's Apple. I've dabbled with Linux over the years and felt MEH about it. But in THIS circumstance I'd ask you -- mostly out of curiosity -- to try Ubuntu Budgie. Budgie has a nice little dock and a clean interface. The install should be easy but part of the setup will be... trying. (They have this thing with widgets that's confused.) Anyway I've seen it work shockingly well on Pentiums... and maybe (?) it will take out the kernel panic?
