The song is known in Ireland as The Derry Air, which means the Derry Tune. Derry being an Irish city and County. A lady visiting and staying overnight in lodgings heard a travelling bard (a fiddle player) play the tune outside her window on the street.. No words are known to have existed. She asked a song writer to put words to it. It's about a father seeing his son off to war. having lost one son already. Danny, Dan, Donal, Daniel and Donald are the same name. It can be a first or second name. If a surname, it is likely to be prefixed by O (of the clan) or Mac (son of). It connects back to the biblical book of Daniel. Meaning strong man blessed by God. In the prophecy it was said a strong man would emerge as a leader in the world about now. Watch out for him, it is said is name will be Daniel and the hand of God is upon him.
Well I’m a little old in the tooth now and my back is a bit bowed by the load the Lord has placed there, but it has softened me and made me a better man because of it.
My little brother Danny died of meningitis aged 7 in 1945, my parents were poor Irish working class people. My mother had 10 children 6 died and only 4 of us survived to adulthood. But, both of my parents never got over the loss of this precious little boy. It brings me to tears every time I hear this song I never knew my brother but he has a place in all of our families hearts. We are now only 3 siblings left my darling older sister died on Easter Sunday from the coronavirus, she is so sadly missed by us all. But, I, pray to the almighty that one day soon we will all be reunited as a family in heaven if God so wills it. Amen Thank you kingdom choir for a beautiful rendition of this famous Irish ballad. The only time a ballad was written for a father to a dead son in Irish folklore.
My empathy. May the Lord comfort and strengthen you and your family on your loss of those dear ones. My own mother also lost 2 daughters in their infancy to Measles in Africa. And for years, she cried over her loss. She still remembers them and her loss with some emotion. But thank God, she found the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and has hopes that someday we shall all meet as a united family never to be parted again.
MAY GOD BLESS THE TABERNACLE CHOIR. 50+YEARS AGO OUR IRISH TEACHER TOUGHT US THIS SONG IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL CALLED ST. MARY SCHOOL IN ETHIOPIA. MAY GOD BE PRAISED AND ALL MY FRIENDS GOD BLESS YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE.
My husbands name is Danny ,,fondly called by his friend and me as”DANNY BOY”,,He passed away 4 years ago,,his death anniversary is coming this April,,and i saw this choir singing it,,i really cried,,i did not finish listening to the choir,,maybe later on,,i cried,so sad😭😭
I like this version but the one I listen to the most is byu vocal point they covered it a few years ago I love that one. Also did you know it was president Gordon b hinckley favourite hymn
I can still remember my mother calling to me these many years ago...Oh Danny Boy where are you ?..may you rest in peace my beloved mother...your son. ..danny thomas
I love this song it reminds me of my dad who passed away His name was Daniel and his family called him Danny Boy. I miss him so much and he would sing this song to us as children many times.😪😪
So many beautiful comments here. My deepest respect to you all. And of course to the choire and orchestra. Happy new year! Of all the versions I have heard of Danny Boy, this is by far my favorite.
I had the privilege of seeing the Tabernacle choir rehearse on Temple Square last October for the first time . I closed my eyes to focus on the singing. To me it was most heavenly sound I had heard. 5 days before that I watched them sing 'Loves Divine, all Loves Excelling' at the end of the morning session of General Conference. It was that wonderful it brought me to tears.
This song is for my cousin Scott who died un Nov 12 unexpectedly...you were like a brother to me my you rest in peace and god rest your soul. May we meet again on green pastures.
Aloha to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and everyone else responsible for this iconic song "Danny Boy." Let's do our best and ask God's protection for the whole world as we are living such troubled times~~~~Covid-19 pandemic killing millions of people all over the world, climate change affecting humans and all other living creatures too, hostility and waging wars among nations in the world, etc. In Jesus's name I humbly ask for your prayers and positive actions to promote more loving kindness and peace in this troubled planet !!!!!! Sincerely, Robert S.J. Hu September 30, 2020.
I think think if these beautiful hymns were played around the world, It would stop the corona virus, i would like to rise all these hymns to the altar of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Sang this to my son 38 years ago . When he started to sing it ,he always puy a little extra into "I love you so". Irish you may not be by blood ,but this song gets to any person who has loved ones distant.
I believe I have all the Choir's albums; they're the best. And, if you like Danny Boy, you should view Shenandoah. The Orchestra at Temple Square and Bells of Temple Square are such marvelous additions to this fabulous choir. Thanks to all of you, you're just precious.
The ones who gave thumbs down don't even have the slightest idea how difficult it is to lead a choir to such delicate dynamics. The arrangement may be kitsch, but the interpretation makes it art.
Red Rocks Colorado is one of the most unique places I have ever been. Very few people were there the day we stopped just to see the place. My kids had no trouble at all hearing my scolding from the "stage". .. and neither did the other people in the back who applauded.
Frieden durch Chorsingen. Die wunderbaren Bildern mit den harmonischen Stimmen, lassen uns vergessen, dass es Menschen gibt die das alles zerstören wollen.
The most Divine, Sincere, and Majestic rendition of Danny Boy ever Conceived for our Eyes and Ears! I care not who, what, when, where, or why such music came to be, all I know is that from the words and harmonies, this is a song of love...unconditional unrelenting love!
I was at this concert. One of the most moving and spiritual experiences of my life. President Monson was there and the choir was amazing in the most beautiful venue in the world to see live music. Especially music of this caliber.
Choral singing almost always seems to elevate a song from lyrics being sung in a melody into a heartfelt communion between the listener and the Divine. I feel like if each choir member is a thread, then the choir is a window shade, and their unisoned singing is the voice of God, permeating from just beyond the veil.
Theres all.sorts of great genres of music out there, but some like this one commands the utmost of reverence, choral combined with orchestra, the mother of all music genres!
Aloha to all of you that perform at the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you all for posting this "Danny Boy" resonating song for me and the world to enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gratefully, Robert S. J. Hu May 25, 2020 .
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the rose is falling It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. But when ye come and all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me. And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
Such a powerful song. It touches us the way we, uniquely human, should be touched. I love singing this song, but find it difficult to finish it without crying.
The song is the Londonderry Air. Not Derry. I am from Limavady in Co Londonderry where the origins of this beautiful melody came from with my great grandfather having been a railway man. god bless the people of Limavady and Co. Londonderry. 🙏🏽🇬🇧❤️🙌💥 beautifully sung by this choir 🙌
Ancient Irish air, first heard at a harpers festival in Belfast in 1792. The words were written by Englishman Frederic Weatherly in 1910 the music having been sent to him by his sister in the USA who heard it from Irish railroad workers.
Correct Daniel. It was penned by George Petre who was responsible for antiquities on during the mapping of the 6” map of Ireland which began in North County Derry around 1850. Petre heard an old Irish Harper Crampsie from Magilligan townland playing it in Limavady, a county town, and wrote the tune down prompting him to continue writing old tunes for fear of them being lost to future generations. He later published his collection.
I remembered I have to sing this song in my primary school (Hutching Primary School, Georgetown, Penang) almost 50 years ago. My music teacher was a English-born lady.
My Father in Law Alfie LISLE of Sunderland UK, loved this piece of music. having gone through 6 years of WW2 I think he sought solace and peace in the music

known as the " Londonderry Air "

I'm from north eastern India and I love this song from my heart, you really needn't to be an Irishman to feel the beauty of the wonderful song.
You dont have to be Irish, just human
