  • The Adrenal Thyroid Connection:
What's Your Body Trying to Tell You?
    Presented by Aviva Romm, MD
Women struggling with any chronic illness naturally want the fastest route to wellness, and that's what practitioners want to provide. Whether for ourselves or our clients, we need to take a deep look at what the body is trying to say and answer that call in our healing strategy. Adrenal dysregulation and "the-survival-mode" root cause of Hashimoto's are examples of how self-preservation can lead to systemic imbalance, and how the wound reveals the cure.
In this one-hour webinar, Dr. Romm will provide a unique and even counterintuitive approach to help women restore their energy, immunity, and take back their lives.
From Dr Romm's insights, you will take away new strategies that will help patients not just overcome symptoms, but truly heal the body and restore quality of life through replenishment.
    - Explore the connection between metabolism, hormones, mind, and mood
    - Discuss root causes of dysfunction as they relate to lifestyles in "survival mode"
    - Learn strategies for addressing adrenal and thyroid imbalances

I used CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I). It was an intense 12 week education, record keeping, and practice to understand sleep, establish good sleep hygiene, and to fundamentally commit to forever treating sleep as essentially a medicine. This video explains why sleep-as-medicine makes sense. After 3 years, I still strictly practice the sleep strategies I learned in CBT-I.

I have had diagnosed Hashimoto's for 20 years (since 2002). I am 72 years old and a man. I have eaten basically low carb since about 1992. Even carnivore for almost 3 years. Many issues improved, like eczema, keratosis and others. But the thyroid symptoms came back, like cold at night, hair loss, weight gain, poor sleep and other things. Tried fasting and other things. Now, after cutting out dairy and gluten and going back to carbs, everything improved! I was seeing high ketones AND high blood glucose at the same time, which shouldn't be. I am working on all cortisol reduction and sleeping much better. I will never go super low carb again. I eat potatoes, apples, avocado and such. No extreme spiking things like rice or sugar based stuff. Getting better in all areas, but will take a while for me to declare victory, but no more stressful diets.

I feel like the root cause that was missing from this video, is Trauma... feeling unsafe that would trigger the FFF response in the first place that can weaken our system and making it harder to deal with all the other eternal triggers. It could be the other way around, where trauma is hard to release because of these external sources, or working in tandem simultaneously. Our environment is a major component, and like she said, our society is working so fast in a rapidly changing environment that's hard to keep up (adapt) with. Loving Community is important for well-being and could help us get over things quicker... She even mentioned that loneliness is the biggest issue with Cardiovascular health. The Polyvagal theory is so interesting and important to understand.

I absolutely agree and feel trauma (especially childhood) sets us up for a lifetime of adrenal fatigue due to the FFF response that locks in our body. Trauma Release Exercises can help.

I believe you were right. I was born with extreme fatigue and was an unwanted child raised within a violent home. My psychologist said that gets the stress respos system going and that makes sense, my mother was so stressed she ripped out her own hair and chewed her nails to the meat under it, I also chewed my nails down. I had the diagnosis Graves at 35 years old and had by then been showing signs since birth. Vitamin D have helped though but Im a total wreck stresss wise.

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2016. I recently moved to another state and figured it was time to find an endocrinologist needless to say I fired her just as quick as I hired her when she told me to go to my general practitioner for antidepressants. It’s sad that an ENDOCRINOLOGIST has no idea on how to treat a thyroid autoimmune deficiency. She also told me to lose weight hahaha. I was certain considering she was a fairly new Dr. that she would of been up on the latest remedies NOPE

I love that she discusses our bodies from an ancestral pov. Our ancestral biology that's developed over thousands of years to protect us and make us thrive compared to our very different modern lives is something that gets dismissed like it's insignificant or something. I wish she would have drawn the same comparison with our diets though. Our overload of grains/sugars/carbs in our modern diets needs to be addressed on a massive scale (they cause major inflammation, amongst other deadly symptoms). This huge increase of dietary grains/sugars is bad enough, but it's happened simultaneously along side our new found fear of red meats and saturated fats. This has played a significant role in this endocrine destruction in such a large percentage of the population. Healthy fats are vital for our bodies to even produce all these hormones in the first place. Also, like she said, people are only getting 10% of the fruits and veggies they need.. it's because you have to eat truckloads of fruits and veggies to meet those ideal levels of nutrients, but if we just ate our ancestrally appropriate diet that would not be the case. A small, 3-4 oz portion of steak has more nutrients than buckets full of fruits/veggies. Not to mention the oxalates and defensive toxins we're ingesting and having to filter with the plants.. these are also damaging our guts/microbiome, hormones, brain function, etc. And all of this hasn't even touched on the processed foods 😳

@unplugged 92 Unfortunately, some people don't learn until it hits home or happens to themselves. I've watched some stories on turnarounds that have happened to doctors because they came down with serious illness and following their own protocols did nothing to improve their condition--they simply got worse. When they were down to their last straw and decided to look at alternative medicine & holistic/nutritional healing, they gave it a shot, it finally opened their eyes and they managed to cure themselves. Needless to say, after that point, some "defected" from the allopathic practice and philosophy which they personally realized did nothing to help chronic disorders. Some developed a "guilt" complex and left the conventional practice completely and went into more functional medicine careers.

Have a low thyroid and a year ago developed psoriasis from head to toe. Went to the doctor and of course was put on biologics which made everything so much worse. Learned as much as I could about clearing from psoriasis with nutrition. The doctors say that is impossible aNd close their minds to healthy eating as a cure. But the doctors make nothing on a healthy cure so they don’t want to even hear about it. I have cleared my skin and will now rebuild my body with more healthy eating and the right supplementation. Hope to never need a medical doctor again.

I had chronic ear infections as a kid. When my health was finally in my own hands and I had grown up and moved out, I realized that seasonal allergies were causing my ear infections. My kids have seasonal allergies and haven't ever had an ear infection. I always give an antihistamine and they never get "sick". My mom also has this issue, but won't listen and she often "sick" because she let her allergies wreak havoc on her system. I also realized I didn't get thirsty like other people did and it was contributing to my chronic uti's. I had 9 uti's in one year and doctors did nothing but throw antibiotics at me. They never once asked my mom to actually measure how much water I drank. I figured it out and forced myself to drink more. I haven't had a uti in 10 years. Also, I think lack of thirst might be associated with hashimoto's as I know other people with hashis that don't get thirsty.

My resesrch has led me to understand that the thirst mechanism is a function of the hypothalamus, part of the endocrine system with the thyroid, yep. I took a fall as an infant that gave me - not a concussion, but (40+ years later I figured out) a damaged hypothalamus. It's the "H" of the HPA axis and controls so many things including metabolism, circadian rhythm, hunger, emotional attachment, body temp regulation, sex drive, breast milk production, etc.

I pray the Lord Jesus touches you with healing, @Vixinaful. Even so, we still live in the natural, & thus we are bound to certain things of the natural, & one of the things that we cannot avoid is that we have to do some things for ourselves. (Sounds like you were trying with the adrenal support supplementation & then got derailed by your medical doctor who apparently is like so many of them whose minds are not changed from antiquated & incorrect information by encountered facts, & that is unfortunate. I know you said you didn't get the same benefits you did from the adrenal support supplements intially when you began retaking the said supplements, but perhaps swithing to a different brand, formulation, or form (e.g. liquid as opposed to, say, capsules) would make the difference for the better?)
For Biblical instances supportive of the idea that our involvement in our own healing is often crucial to achieve healing, for whatever reason, the Lord told Isaiah to have Hezekiah have his servants prepare a poultice to place on Hezekiah's terminal skin problem (2 Kings 20:1-7); the Lord miraculously healed & resurrected a young girl & then instructed her family to give her something to eat, possibly indicating not that she was so hungry as that perhaps her health problem to begin with was nutritional (Mark 5:22-24 & 35-43); Paul the apostle instructed his fellow passengers on a storm-tossed ship to break their fast & eat something for their individual health's sake (Acts 27:33-38); & Paul told Timothy to desist from drinking water (some have speculated that the quality of the water of the area was exceedingly unhealthy at the time, but it could merely be that water itself was not enough to meet Paul's protegé Timothy's special nutritional needs) & to instead drink oinos, which is translated "wine," but "wine" was merely an Anglo generic word for any fruit, vegetable, or grain beverage, whether or not fermented (a.k.a. alcoholic), so, contextually, "juice" (1 Timothy 5:23).
Now, along these lines, I started out also with the thought to recommend to you Izabella Wentz's book "The Root Cause," a book I purchased myself to study further the pathological phenomenon called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. In it she talks about all the trials & errors she went through as a pharmacist who was diagnosed in her younger years with the autoimmune disease & who was seeking to reverse it, & her testimony is that she did. (In desperation in her earliest stages from diagnosis onward, she once sought a psychic or some such fraud & discovered that such doesn't work, but I would have advised you against such even if Wentz had stated it did.)
In said book, Wentz does talk about Grave's disease, too, so that's why I say that maybe you could find some infofmation in it that is helpful to you. A library in your area may even have it to borrow.
Anyway, I hope this all helps you a bit in your quest for recuperation & health. Be blessed. 🙏🏼

Did you recently have an episode? Bc its at it worst right after up to 3 years after and bythen you may have had another. Its so harsh on the body it takes 3 years to recover. Im on homeopathy now since 2 years back but...not really working although I AM doing better since I removed a source of stress which have been a narcissistic person and one neighbour that was psychopathic that moved. If you have any stress around and if you can, eliminate it immediately.

I got news for you, sisters, it's not just women who are being misdiagnosed or treated with the doctor's latest "this will help me get my new boat" drug. I just think men aren't as patient as most of you, and we just accept what we're being told, get frustrated, and move on. I'm probably on the lesser accepting side, but I did work on ladders for close to a year with excruciating pain and handfuls of opioids from an undiagnosed stress fracture in my foot. Nonetheless, I don't want to equate the two levels. I have no doubt that women are told it's hypochondriacal much more than men.

I am in search of new Dr’s but that’s not easy and you need to visit a Dr. to find out what they are really like. I am terribly frustrated ( and hurt) so thanks for helping, I really appreciate you took the time to care. 😊

22 yr Old suffering from Brian fog. I had brain fog when I was diagnosed at 19 years old because I have thyroid problems that are genetic. Hypothyroidism and hyper thyroid will cause brain fog. My aunt had a heart attack at 26 years old from a stressful marriage. A lot of woman end up in bad relationships that will cause stress on the body high blood pressure and other stress on the body and its more common in young woman to have that kind of stress. Health problems have no age limit and neither does brain fog and sometimes when we're older its easier to blame brain fog on age but there is something else in our body going on. Young children under 10 years old can get stressed out and get high blood pressure because their family lifes not perfect at home.

Okay so I will have a lot of editing throughout this podcast.
First thing, this is NOT about the thyroid/adrenal connection, which is the only reason I wanted to listen to this.
A lot of good information but no real, in depth solutions.
I’m supposed to wake up at the same time, everyday. Anyone that has a job always wake up at the same time throughout all of the years of work. That never fixes that wide awake feeling at night and dead tired feeling around 2 to 3 in the afternoon.
Meditating, complete darkness and silence doesn’t let you fall asleep at night or keep you asleep throughout the night.
Yoga, walking etc. doesn’t do very much at all.
You “force” yourself to get up and do all the “have to’s” throughout the day, which turns out, stresses you out. You’re also stressed out when you DON’T get up and do all of your “have to’s”
There’s so much more and I’m completely exhausted with years of trying to figure all of this out.
I haven’t found any doctor that has been able to help me...not naturopath etc or conventional doctors have ever been able to help

Take an adaptogen such as rhodiola rosea in the morning, and once again in the early afternoon on an empty stomach it will give you a lot of energy and focus, you can add a good vitamin B complex and other supplements, just google adrenal fatigue natural cure and you will find the solutions

Vit D3 is essential for sleep.
Make sure you are not depleted.
You can meditate and do yoga 24h a day, but if you lack D3 you won't make acetylcholine and you won't sleep.
Yoga is a lie. It's just a religion.

This has been a much needed & comprehensive treatment of this incredibly serious health related issue, & I very much appreciate it.
Now, for a bit of necessary critiquing that could improve such a presentation at least for future ones (that is if this one cannot be updated), it took all the way to "6:50" before you ladies acknowledged that it is not just "women" who suffer from adrenal fatigue & thyroid problems. But then you went back to "women," "women," "women," when, in fact, both genders are experiencing these things -- & this was so even before this era of "COVID-19" & the weaponization of it by those with wicked motives & all else that is happening nationally & with world events.
    "47:45" -- Healing protocol
"58:00" -- "Potatoes," though? And "white" at that?
But, again, thanks for this video & its information. Much appreciated.

circadian rhythm: the best thing to help I have found, is quality powdered Vit C- both types together: ascorbic and ascorbate. We are all pretty low in Vit C, and tablets are not easily bioavailable. Powder is better absorbed. Doing this immediately helped with the waking up at two am and not being able to get back to sleep problem. Then i did follow up with quality CalMag supplements. Never had an issues since (it was a chronic problem at one time, for me!)

Fibre from lots of veg. No sugar or carbs like bread and pasta, no potatoes (carbs), no juice or fruit. "Bad" bacteria eats sugar, "good" flora lots lots of vegetables. The bad bacteria can be bigger in population than good bacteria. We need the other way around. Probiotics help but so does consistently good diet, you can take probiotics but if you still eat mostly cake, cereal, candy, bread, pasta, pizza, potatoes, fruit etc...you shouldn't expect it to do much without looking at diet which means ditch all that an have lots and lots of veg and fats. Look into keto too. Fibre from things like flaxseed also.

You need something that will knock you out. Stay off your phone at least an hour before you attempt sleep. The blue light from the screen disrupts melatonin. Get into a little routine. Take a bath with Epsom salts, find some herbal tea that helps. I should be taking my own advice honestly but that's all I know that isn't pharmaceutical. Sometimes calendula and alpha lipoic acid and kratom helps me sleep. I get it though sometimes none of that works. 🤷‍♀️
