      Thanks. I am also trying to find out, it is similar to Candy CDVG 30/1X. Not sure what I have seen was a top being in stainless steel or glass but it did have a 'grill' texture with a feel of glass or ceramic. It is about 200 euro

      @@robinorhysrhys1562 ok interesting. I can't find there griddle, is the cdvg 30/1 just a induction cooktop? So would the one you're talking about be an induction ceramic griddle that inserts into a counter?

      @robinorhysrhys1562 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed. It is not flat though, it has 'wrinkle'. Electric and can be inserted in a kitchen worktop. The item is Candy brand, and they would name it as a 'griddle' or just a single rectangular hob with wrinkles. It is in one of the shops but am not sure whether to buy

    I wanted to griddle but didn't want yet another big appliance on my deck. I ended up getting a custom made griddle plate from Steelmade, for about half the cost of a stand-alone griddle. It was made to fit the entire surface of my 6-burner Weber Summit, with about 3/4 inch around each side to let excess heat escape (and prevent potential gas build up). I had the drain holes drilled all in a row on one side of the griddle, directly over the 7th, smoker burner which is not lit when I use it, so I don't have the grease tray (also custom) sitting over a lit burner. I get outstanding temp control that I can vary across the griddle, rarely have the burners above low as the heat transfer is very efficient, and the flavorizer bars on my Weber serve as heat diffusers. I could not be happier with this setup. It stores in a hefty custom storage sleeve in my deck box. Only downside is it is a heavy chunk of carbon steel to lift on and off.

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for sharing Scooter that's awesome! I totally understand not wanting more grills they take up a lot of space. I've seen other people get custom steel made grills and they like them as well. I think this information will be very helpful for anyone in the market for a griddle.

    • @kurtzFPV
      @kurtzFPV หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know this is old, but I just got a heavy carbon steel drop in for my Weber Genesis. After 3 cooks, I can already see that the only time I will use the grates again is for low and slow. Best sear I've ever gotten on steaks and the smash burgers are wonderful. For faster cooks, I've never been convinced that much smoke flavor makes it to the meat anyway.

    I converted my propane Weber into half a griddle and so far it's been one of the best upgrades I've done. I wish it was bigger but my model can only support half a griddle due to air flow. Despite that, I'm cooking so much more stuff on it than just the grill.

But I can say it's been a blast owning one and I really haven't used my grill at all since I got my griddle. I'm getting a griddle, but should I get one with a lid or a cover. I know you mentioned in one of your videos that a lid is protecting the griddle from particles but is it usefel when preheating? A gas grill is a must, but the design of a grill is different. In Sweden, the difference in price is a hefty €100 for a lid. Very simple with no hinges. It has latches/hooks? in the middle to hang to the lid on the rear side of the griddle. If I want hinges, I have to cough up another €200-250. The griddle itself with the cover is only €250.
    Thumbs up for all your videos!

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vincent, that's awesome that you are getting a griddle ! I recommend the lid to protect your griddle from bad weather especially rain. A lot of standing water on your griddle can cause rust. It is frustrating how expensive they are I paid $100 for my lid.
      If you are able to store in under a porch or in a garage then I wouldn't be as concerned, but if it's just sitting outside all the time then I would say it's a good investment.
      And yes it's just for protecting the griddle it really doesn't help with pre heating or anything. And if you want to melt cheese or something on a burger I always use my little dome.
      So I guess my answer is No you don't have to get one you will just need to find away to protect your griddle top. Or if they're sold separately my suggestion is to just get the griddle then start saving up for a lid down the road. Or look into soft covers. Initially I just bought a plastic grill cover and used that for a month or so until I bought a lid. You could also go to a hardware store and get a cheap waterproof tarp to tie down over the griddle. I hope that was helpful and thank you so much for watching my videos. It always blows my mind when there's people halfway around the world watching and commenting on my cooks. I really appreciate it.

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bob, yes I've been asked about that before and here's my normal answer. First I want to say I've never actually used one so take everything with a grain of salt. I would be worried about even heat distribution. Camp Chef, Blackstone and all the other griddle companies have heat deflectors on the bottom to distribute heat evenly. If it's just a piece of steel then my guess is it will get really hot directly under the flames then maybe have cool spots. I did buy a Steelmade griddle for my electric stove and that is what happened. It only got hot directly over the coils. So if I wear you that would be what I would check for, how even does it distribute. Hopefully that was helpful.

    For the models with built-in lids, do you close them while you're cooking like you'd do with a grill? Or is the lid just for storage and these flat tops are meant to be used open air only?

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul. You can use it either way with the lid closed or with it open. If you close the lid it will retain more of the heat just like a grill and cook things a little quicker. If you don't close it that's fine too it just won't cook as fast. So it's really up to you.
      Just remember that griddles aren't great with super thick cuts of meat. So if it's like a thick chicken breast or something then you might want to close it.
      If you're doing thin sliced meat like cheese steak then you wouldn't really need to close it. The meat will cook just fine with the open air.

    I just got a portable flat top grill for my birthday.
    I'm wondering if it's safe to use the same way I'd use my glass top stove to heat a cast iron pan?
    The reason I want to, is because it's a single burner, and I want to cook a ribeye steak then baste it with butter, garlic, and rosemary...
    Which would be hard to do without being able to tip the cast iron pan I have.

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mathew, Did you get the portable camp chef FTG600 or did you get a different portable? From my experience yes you can put cast iron on top then heat it up however it takes forever. Because the burners need to heat the griddle top which then needs to heat the cast iron and they are both really thick. So it's very inefficient. I did it in my chicken wing video and go over how it did not work out very well if you want to check that out. Now I was trying to deep fry oil in the cast iron which is a little different, but still it took forever to warm up. I have seen people baste a steak on the griddle with butter and rosemary. I have not done it so I don't know how well it worked out compared to the traditional pan method. I'll find that video and link it here. Also I'll link my chicken wing video. It's not exactly the same but similar and I think it might be really time consuming for you to try. That's just my two cents like I said I've never done it. If it were me I'd just try to do it on the griddle while using the spatula to baste or do it inside on the cast iron.

    So maybe you can help me see the pros more.
    I just got a Masterbuilt800 and it has a griddle attachment, but I haven’t used it and don’t have any plans to any time soon.
    I guess I just don’t understand. Like for example can you smoke meats with a griddle? Is it literally only to cook fried foods? Because in the rare event I want to pan fry anything outside, I would just place a cast iron skillet on my Weber kettle and fry things on it.
    So other than quantity/size, what does a griddle like this offer that one couldn’t do on a Weber kettle with a cast iron skillet?

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks so much for watching. I've seen those masterbuilt smokers they look pretty sweet!
      So to answer your question no you can't smoke anything and I would say that also it's not useful for frying. I agree if you're looking to fry I would use a cast iron or dutch oven because you need something to contain the oil.
      In my opinion what a griddle offers that a cast iron on top of a Webber kettle doesn't us basically diner food. And I know you said other than size but the size is the main advantage. You can do a full breakfast (bacon, eggs, pancake, potatoes) all at the same time.
      You could also do fried rice or hibachi which is very popular. And one of the most popular griddle meals is smash burgers. You can absolutely do these on a cast iron skillet but you could only do 3 maybe 4 at a time. On a griddle you could do like 10 to 12 smash burgers for a party.
      So basically like I said think diner food. All diners make most of there food in flat tops. I'll link a video as an example example. Thanks for watching.

My only concern that I would look into if I were you would be how even it heats. The Blackstone's and Camp Chefs have plates or something on the bottom to heat as evenly as possible. If it's just a piece of steel on a grill than you might have some hot and cold spots.

    Can you griddle when the weather is not ideal, middle of winter, light snow falling, maybe light rain? If so, you have any tips for using the griddle when the weather is not ideal, especially when the griddle is exposed and not on an enclosed porch for example. I want a griddle but can't imagine only using it a few months out of the year.

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So yes you can and I'll link a video of me doing it. I griddle pretty much all year round in Ohio. My tips would be
      1. Warm it up on low because the griddle is very cold and you don't want to immediately expose it to high heat, it could warp.
      2. Do t worry be about snow or anything while you griddle just make sure you cover it up when done. Get a lid not a plastic cover. You can find them on Amazon or Etsy.
      3. If it gets wet while your cooking that's fine you just need to get it bone dry when your done before you cover it. If you don't get it dry it will rust.
      4. If it does get a little rust don't panic it's not ruined. You can scrape it off and reseason. I also have a video on that be which I'll link.
      Thanks for cc watching and let me know if you have any more questions about buying a griddle. I don't work for any of the companies or anything so I'll tell you my honest opinion.

I wouldn’t buy a camp chef poor design

    • @JohnnyBrunet

      The spout is small and can get clogged but it's easily loosened with a screw driver or the match stick holder that comes with the griddle. The large opening on the Blackstone is very nice, it's a great design. The fact that it's in the back however doesn't really do much for me. That just seems more like a marketing point for them, they wanted something different. Both are good griddles and I would recommend both. I do think the camp chef is a higher quality.

There's restaurants closing all the time and you might be able to get a used commercial grade flat top. I hope that helps Robert. Feel free to email me at griddlewithjohnny@gmail.com. • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertledsome3327 I mean it's hard to say. I could see it working fine for 5-7 years or maybe the volume would bee too much and it breaks down earlier. My main concern would be something breaking then they don't honor the warranty bc it's being used commercially but I guess how would they know. Have you looked into smaller commercial stainless flat tops? Are they any cheaper? I had a countertop one at a kitchen I managed in a retirement community and it wasn't huge but it worked great! You could definitely do it and it could work so I'm not saying it isn't possible I just don't know. But also I'm not the one who has the shell out the money so I tott understand not wanting to pay 6 grand. Why can't I buy a griddle that fits where the grates go on my grill?

    • @JohnnyBrunet
      @JohnnyBrunet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mitch,
      You can buy one and I know that companies like Steelmade make them. They will even make you a custom one for the dimensions of whatever grill you own. I want to first say that I've never actually used one so my opinion is just speculation but what I would be concerned about, and that is heat distribution. Will it evenly distribute the heat so that you can get an consistent cook? is my question. I bought a steel griddle for my stove top and used a cast iron one and it didn't work as well because there were hot spots and cool spots. The stand alone griddles made by Camp Chef and Blackstone have heat dispensers on the bottom. They make sure everything distributes evenly for a consistent cook. I did a review of my camp chef and if you go to 3 min and 40 seconds I show the bottom of the griddle and you can see what I'm talking about. That's what makes it more than just a flat piece of steel. I will link that video at the end of this comment. Again I've never actually used what you are talking about but I know it exists and that would be my concern. I hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching my video.
