Hey Chris, I am a 22 year veteran fabricator welder. Overall you did a pretty good job on your project considering your tools and where you were working. I would have done a few things different but great job!! You really don't want to grind your welds if you can help it though. It weakens your structural integrity. Impact and shock absorption can crack them. The inner shield wire you were using is fine for outdoors. It's not really considered flux core even though the flux is on the inside. Flux core requires CO2 gas and is insanely hot for a project like yours. Great work. Extra stiffeners and bracing can also compensate for warping a lot while keeping everything true. If you ever do other projects like this, shoot me an email, I'll be glad to help out.

Chris I've newly started watching your videos. I must admit I'm very impressed. As an ASE technician your attention to detail is great, your effort and willingness to not cut corners is a plus. Keep up the good work. PS. You sealed ALMOST every part of this rack except where it goes down into the bed. That unfortunately will cause it to rust from the inside out. As Oxygen on steel is the enemy. Also use rector seal on the threads to bolt it down. Maybe even some rubber for vibration dampening. You could easily start your own small shop and make a nice living.
I for my self must say that regardless the quality of the welds etc. I really think it is a great inspiration to see what one can do even without any professional tools or skills. Thanks for putting this up! I really like the home-made utilitarian vibe. And as you said in the previous vid: It's not like you would weld roll cages or any safety related components without proper training. Thanks!
Wow! I'm impressed, fantastic job Chris. Just a few more pieces and you could have probably built yourself a nice storage basket area behind your light bar. Adding those side plates was an excellent idea. Although I think a nice little detail such as cutting your ChrisFIx logo into them would have been nice addition. Also, if you don't mind me making a few suggestions, I think a single amber l.e.d. marker light mounted to the very two front corners facing forward would look great. Also, maybe add a single red l.e.d. marker light to each of the rear corners on the roof part of your rack. Then if you wanted to you could wire them to your trailer harness so they could function as parking lights, turn signals and brake lights. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see that l.e.d. bar all lit up. :)
Tat2Dragons Thanks man and stoppppp. Those are such good ideas lol. Now I need to update the design haha. I wish I could carve the chrisFix logo into the side plate. That would be so awesome man!
Cool mods, Tat2. I can hear Chris getting excited already (his enthusiasm was definitely noticed in the 2nd video - like a little guy getting closer to Xmas! HA) Good work, Chris. Now breathe in, breathe out, don't get too excited on the mods. :-p hehehe
ChrisFix You're welcome.:) Hey Chris, if you like that idea you could go about it another way by cutting out a pair of plates with your ChrisFix logo that you could bolt, or screw onto your existing plates. You could even go farther with it by cutting a piece of clear plexiglass to mount behind the logo and then mount l.e.d.s in edge of the plexiglass so it would back light your logo. :)
That looks awesome!. I would consider to add a "basket " or a grill type of build behind the light bar so you can put/set your spare tire on it. Also....2 more 4x4 spot lights, 1 on each back corner, you know...extra day light at 360°. I know that's what I'm gonna do when I build mine. Thanks for sharing your great ideas with us.
i love how excited he is, to be fair if i was working on something like this for my 95 ranger i'd be excited too, unlike most comments i'm not dissing the welds because mine probably look like that after being out of it for 6 years, but anyways love the project!
Looks great. I looked through the comments to see if someone suggested it but I would of added some grate so you could use the roof rack rather than it jus holding your light. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos so I’m sure that if you wanted it you would of built it that way. Great job.
briansmobile1 Oh nice! The Pine Barrens is a really neat place! Too bad you werent closer. We could do a video collab. Maybe we can figure something out anyhow.
I wasn't looking for anything having to do with mounting a light bar to my truck. But your video was so awsome I couldn't stop watching. Very nice job, very entertaining and informative.
Actually much easier to reverse the mounts on light mount on light again reversed on lights and them mark where to drill on roof mount so he could simply mount the brackets and than install the light bar.. but what a great built.. this guy rocks.
Dude, since discovering your channel my confidence is building for car maintainence and modifications. I really can't thank you enough, I also have to say that light rig is AWESOME. Really agricultural, I love it!
I watch a lot of youtube things and I have to say, your is a lot better than most. Everything in focus and the sound was far better than any other DIY project as well. It's about as hard to do the build as it is to do the video. I'm not much of a welder but I get buy and I also thought your workmanship was well done also.
+R.J. B Thanks a lot and yea, it takes me longer to film and edit than to do the job at hand, but it is so worth it for comments like this! I am not a welder either but I love to learn new things!
Thanks for sharing this video and information. I just stumbled upon your channel today. I appreciate the detailed explanations. I am inspired to try some new techniques and gain skills along the way. I’m 74 years old and had a couple of Strokes in August 2022. I currently am recovering & receiving therapy. Unfortunately I am becoming aware that body is not functioning as well as it used.
@Chrisfix you're best project yet! Custom fabrication is very challenging. Awesome work , no job is too daunting for you! You made it work working out of your driveway. You inspire me to keep challenging myself.
***** Cutting the bar at 45 degrees for me would have been more difficult because I do everything by hand but if you have a saw that you can dial in at 45 degrees, then for sure!
I use JB Weld as a body filler on projects like this. You can paint it, but not powder coat. I think I would have put a few gussets to keep the top rack from bouncing. Great job Chris!
Just a short tip. When welding the square tubing before you weld the end cap you should spraj some oil in the tubing. Either with a paint sprayer or others. It will prevent the rust. But a great idea thoe. Love it!
Good job Chris, Heres a welding tip, when welding tube to flush metal knock the ends down of the tube. It'll help with weld penetration and less clean up grinding. Second tip, try welding gusset plates where loads will be,like the vertical from the bed up to the cab top and where the "light rack" meets it. It doesn't hav't to be large, but you'll be dealing with wind hammer at highe speeds.
I only mentioned it because, I've got a Doctorate from the school of hard knocks. My old instructor said " An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of peace of mind". Happy Fabrication....
My only concern were the wires. Running them through the frame was what I thought of. Gonna have to watch the next video to see how you did it. 👍🏻 Looks pretty sweet now!
I think if you would've made a bottom or floor to the above the cab piece it would've been alot more useful as far as utility but none the less it does look bad ass and better than anything you could've bought..and having the pride and ambition of making it yourself is priceless. ..great job
For something he banged together in his drive way, it looks great. And should provide much needed protection for the cab and load bed cover from big bulky items.
Quick tip, probably already in the comments, but I would look up a video on 45 degree cuts and weld them together, also have to make sure that your welds all around are sealed, water will rust it from the inside out. Good job with that damn flux core I hate that stuff.
The night light build came out great . You should think about adding some all back 20 inc off road wheels to you're truck . You'll be surprise in a awesome way .
Found it funny all the people here giving you tips on welding and saying you did a bad job. Personally I'm a certified welder in TIG, MIG, and stick as well as flux core. The welds are good enough they aren't going anywhere. Like he said probably 101 times they are being ground down anyways. Looks really good man thinking about making one for my truck.
That's just great work man , all respect to you for building every thing by your self that makes it special and unique, and and not paying for some one to do a regular work for a lot of money . cant wight to see that sun, shines on top of your car .
eyad aljamal Thanks a lot bud! It feels so awesome to drive around knowing I did it myself! I cant wait to show you how to wire it and how bright it is (thursday the video will be out)!
I know it’s a old video! But this is exactly what I’m looking to do with my 09 Chevy I didn’t know what type of medal to use! And your steps are super easy!! Just gotta find a welder for cheap! Awesome vids I’m slowly catching up to most recent ones!
Chris your a good dude. Great videos. You can add a flat shelf to that light bar area for cargo space. Like a scale crawler with shovels, axe picks,a car jack and a gas container.
Chris I enjoyed your build. I have some tips to make it easier for you, cut off wheels for the angle grinder as opposed to using the end grinder and also use a white wheel to clean the welds and also scuffing up the metal for paint. hope to see more from you
Here is a great idea. Get some expanded metal. Cut it to size. Weld it to the bottom of the top rack. The whole area where your light bar is so it's also a cargo rack.
You folks that are telling him to do this or that, this way or that way can build your own. He built it the way he wanted it. And those saying he needs a bigger welder or more expensive one...give him a break. Seems like he does well. I can understand welding tips but cmon folks......

If you'd cut those front bars at 45 degrees, it would have been a lot easier than welding those angle plates.
***** Cutting the bar at 45 degrees for me would have been more difficult because I do everything by hand but if you have a saw that you can dial in at 45 degrees, then for sure!
ChrisFix I'd suggest getting a chop saw. It would also make everything look neater.
Not only was the project awesome but, if the guitar was you rocking out, that was pretty sweet too!
Thanks a lot Dean!
ChrisFix what song was that?! I need it for a project! Thanks
Looks great! It would be really cool to add 12 - 20 inch bar on each side for side lighting. Side lighting is always handy.
you should off made a little basket behind the light bar bro
Thanks for the suggestion!
+ChrisFix gjjjjj!!!!! maan! i was excited as you when u were building it! XD
looks perfect size for a cooler
Hey Chris, if you do add a basket (I vote yes for that) you probably want to gusset the L's on your rack to prevent any sagging up top. nice job
I did that on my design same truck Mazda B series
12:59 HA! Gotcha face!
i think hes about 30 to 45 years old cause In one of his videos he says hes has his van since 1995
+Yeudiel Maximiliano But he has a young voice.. 😁
+Yeudiel Maximiliano that could've meany his parents or the year of the van.
@@xsmsp or maybe 0-100 years old
It's blurred now hahaha
looks good, but that headache rack isn't really. there is nothing there protecting the glass, more like a support for the top.
+peter griffin Thanks!
Still a great video though!!!
+ChrisFix Don't record to close to the welder
I use JB Weld as a body filler on projects like this. You can paint it, but not powder coat. I think I would have put a few gussets to keep the top rack from bouncing.
Great job Chris!
Just a short tip. When welding the square tubing before you weld the end cap you should spraj some oil in the tubing. Either with a paint sprayer or others. It will prevent the rust. But a great idea thoe. Love it!
you gotta show us how those lights are on at night
Eduardo Junior Rodenas This Thursday you will see it at night!
chris fix you should lift your truck :)
Good job Chris,
Heres a welding tip, when welding tube to flush metal knock the ends down of the tube. It'll help with weld penetration and less clean up grinding. Second tip, try welding gusset plates where loads will be,like the vertical from the bed up to the cab top and where the "light rack" meets it. It doesn't hav't to be large, but you'll be dealing with wind hammer at highe speeds.
Darren Ambrose Thanks for the tips Darren!
I only mentioned it because, I've got a Doctorate from the school of hard knocks. My old instructor said " An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of peace of mind". Happy Fabrication....
Darren Ambrose Haha, I agree with your instructor!
Great job. Lots of work doing a project like this by yourself and it paid off.
Looks pretty bad ass. The bedliner finish gives it a good rugged look.
Fry1022 Thanks a lot man!
My only concern were the wires. Running them through the frame was what I thought of. Gonna have to watch the next video to see how you did it. 👍🏻 Looks pretty sweet now!
Chris, good job! You are one no lazies man. For that, respect!
I think if you would've made a bottom or floor to the above the cab piece it would've been alot more useful as far as utility but none the less it does look bad ass and better than anything you could've bought..and having the pride and ambition of making it yourself is priceless. ..great job
sergio hidrogo Thanks a lot man! Maybe in the future I will add a grate or something on the bottom.
That looks SICK! You could even add some metal grating to the top to store lite loads as well. GREAT JOB!
+Tom13GN Thanks a lot! Maybe in the future that will be what I will do!
For something he banged together in his drive way, it looks great. And should provide much needed protection for the cab and load bed cover from big bulky items.
One of the best amateur welding videos Iv'e seen. Great video editing.
That was excellent and the lights where so bright looked like daylight, good job.
WOW! CHRIS GREAT VIDEO ON WELDING TUBING THE LIGHT BARS CAME OUT GREAT! NOT BAD FOR A ROOKIE!! LOL! VICTOR
Great job. I might have added, on the part over the cab, a rail across the back and a steel mesh floor, to work like a roof rack.
Quick tip, probably already in the comments, but I would look up a video on 45 degree cuts and weld them together, also have to make sure that your welds all around are sealed, water will rust it from the inside out. Good job with that damn flux core I hate that stuff.
Thanks for the tip!
Was watching thinking how good that would look painted with bedliner and then boom, you did it.
The night light build came out great .
You should think about adding some all back 20 inc off road wheels to you're truck .
You'll be surprise in a awesome way .
I have a different truck but your project is intriguing and came out well. Makes me giddy to work on mine. Great work.
I'm sure you learned a lot from this project. Love your enthusiasm throughout, very informative and inspirational
I really love your videos, they are very educational and help a lot of people with their cars, thumbs up and thank you.
I was hoping Chris would paint the light bar and did. And I like how he make sure that everyone can be safe when doing a project
I know it’s a old video! But this is exactly what I’m looking to do with my 09 Chevy I didn’t know what type of medal to use! And your steps are super easy!! Just gotta find a welder for cheap! Awesome vids I’m slowly catching up to most recent ones!
you did a great job i wish i had a shop or even place like that to do things like that . living in the city sucks . great work Chris
i can see as the video progressed, the welds looked MUCH better well done.
I have to grind this down because it looks so bad it's bothering me. Laughed so hard! You're awesome Chris
Chris your a good dude. Great videos.
You can add a flat shelf to that light bar area for cargo space. Like a scale crawler with shovels, axe picks,a car jack and a gas container.
wrxsavvy Thanks a lot bud! I like that idea and might just do that in the future!
Looks awesome. Personally I would weld some either mesh or expanded metal in the empty spot behind the light to make use out of the space for storage.
Michael Blankenship that's a great idea!
Chris I enjoyed your build. I have some tips to make it easier for you, cut off wheels for the angle grinder as opposed to using the end grinder and also use a white wheel to clean the welds and also scuffing up the metal for paint. hope to see more from you
Came out great! I’d put a rack on top for storage and to fill in that overhang some
Thanks a lot and cool idea!
@@chrisfix I'd put a spare tire up there :)
Chris allways making it beyond professional
With the heavy metal music at the end along with zooming in and out at different angles! lol.. Great DIY build Chris! Thumbs up!
Here is a great idea. Get some expanded metal. Cut it to size. Weld it to the bottom of the top rack. The whole area where your light bar is so it's also a cargo rack.
OH YEAH!!!!!! ROYALTY FREE METAL RIFF FOR EXTRA AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!
