Synology has been a part of the network-attached storage industry for around 25 years now, and during that time, they've produced an array of solutions. Although all of their solutions support DSM, the extent to which they can use it and the sheer range of features they include does differ. Even though a Synology NAS might sound like the ideal alternative for you to ditch your cloud subscription, not all Synology NAS are built equal. Today, I want to do a quick review of their new entry-level NAS solution, the DS223j, an ARM-powered and extremely cost-effective private NAS device. Synology makes it clear that this device is targeted at budget buyers and those looking for a less demanding entry point into DSM. Nevertheless, with a good range of software services available on the DS223J, its potential for deployment is surprisingly large for its rather modest price tag. Today, we will go over how to setup ds223j, install Seagate Ironwolf Pro 16TB hard drive, and create a storage unit you can access anywhere in the world. Basically create your own cloud and automate backing up your digital files. We are traveling to Cambodia so I needed to be able to access and store my files in my own personal cloud.

The DS223J is a budget friendly storage unit currently retailed for $189. It's an alternative than paying a monthly subscription or buy a new phone. If you have any questions comment down below. This setup has automated and saved me time pushing out more content. Next video I'm currently working on is the Osmo Pocket 3 and Macbook Air. Stay tuned!
Simple and clear explanation - thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I think the issue with the start is his reasoning isn't particular sound so it makes it feel a little like an ad. You give the reasoning of space management... but whilst having more space makes management easier, it being on a cloud doesn't really change much. If I buy a 2tb drive for my pc or buy a 2tb cloud solution solves exactly the same premise you begin with, and the one you went for is way more expensive. Obviously there are lots of benefits to a cloud solution, but you should probably make the first story about losing data, not deleting data, because these are 2 seperate cases, and cloud is the obvious solution for one of them.
I appreciate the feedback. Always looking at ways to improve on communicating. Here is some context this video was not created to compare cloud service vs owning your own data.
This video is a how to setup ds223j. As a content creator I used a lot of memory so this setup works perfect for me. Also I’m not sponsored.
Thank you
I appreciate your support, thank you!
Hello, do you need to change anything on your router in order for the synology to be visible outside your network? like port forwarding?
Great question. I did not change any router settings during the process of setting up DS223J. In order to access my files I would login

@@RunWithPhilip Thanks for the response!
I'm thinking of getting this :) ...I understand it uses 3.5 HDD. I already have a NAS DS713+ since 2015 and is having issues in 2024. Wil the HDD in the NASDS713+ which I think are 3.5 fit and work in the DS223j
Yes it should. What I did to confirm was go to their compatibility website www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=drives&model=DS223j&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim&display_brand=other
A little confusing. You installed 2 Seagate 16TB drives but the setup shows you are formatting 2 Western Digital 2TB drives. You said to use SHR but the program is using RAID 1. (This is probably accurate as SHR is mirroring the drives and if they are the same size it likely uses RAID 1.) Does this unit allow you to set up a DNLA server so that you can access your photos and videos on a Smart TV?
Whether you installed 2TB or 16TB it is the same process setting up the DS223J. Great question. I’ve never looked into access your photos or videos on Smart Tv so not sure that would be possible. Definitely will look into that as I explore synology ecosystem.
If you can point to the device where it is running, it is not a cloud. You may as well call it "your own AI" or "your own company". Calling it a NAS would be ok.
How do you think small Cloud company is able to provide their services? They would use devices or a NAS system but I understand what you mean. What is considered a cloud? Pay monthly fee to store and access files over the internet? Personally the process of putting DS223J was enjoyable. There a place for both cloud services and NAS systems. It all user preference. Thank you for your input!
@@RunWithPhilip Network storage and cloud are not really related. Cloud (in IT) usually means that the hardware is abstracted. A distributed system where the hardware is just a pool of resources that can be used by any customer and any service. Contrasted with the old way of having one server with a single or handful of services, and where you needed to upgrade the hardware to scale up the performance. I can see how it can be confusing. But it will get even more confusing if we start using the terms wrong. Just like some people think "digital" means "distributed via internet" or "smart" means "can run apps".
