  • In this video I will be covering the basics of a NAS including what it is and what it can be used for. This one is geared for beginners. NAS units are awesome, but they are very different than a standard hard drive or a DAS.

Well done! It's challenging communicating something technical to a beginner/introductory level, especially when almost every term or concept is new to the person. I try to help my mom with computer and phone stuff over the phone and it's painful. Mom, click on a folder. What's a folder? Oh lort it's going to be a long night.

Great Video. Can you explain why I would need an additional back up a RAID configured NAS, if the whole point of RAID is redundacy in case of drive failure?

Thank you for sharing all of your video's I have built a Home PLEX Media NAS using a Synology 916+ 4 bay drive, 4 @14TB WD enterprise 7200 drives. I have been tweaking my PLEX settings due to intermittent freeze frame. I have a massive library of 30TB+ running on Raid 5. My next step is to run a cat 8 directly to my PS5 (Internet @ 350M). With the cost of SDD's becoming more reasonably priced I'm considering building a 100% SSD NAS? The Synology DS1812+ 8 bay or DS2415 12 Bay With the cost effectiveness of smaller (Samsung 8G SSD $368) makes it more feasible. So finally to my question, have you ever build a 100% SSD NAS? and do you see any issues with the build concept? Thank you for your time and I'm looking forward to your next video's Rick

Hi Will, I have a question, a few actually just to clear some confusion on my part: Does the internet connection speed you have directly affect the transfer speeds when you're using files from a NAS?
Example: I'm at my office editing a video on Premiere pro that is using files off of a NAS in my office. Will it run faster if my PC and the NAS are on the same Network? (Keeping in mind that the NAS and my PC both support 10GbE connections)
Also, if I'm at home and the NAS is at my office, will there be any effect in speeds if I have a slower internet connection at home?

Here’s the short answer: your network speed will only be as fast as the SLOWEST device, network or network interface between the NAS and the device you’re using.

Does Synology make direct connect RAID? Fast USB or Thunderbolt I just want a SOLID company to make a decent direct connect RAID of 40-100 TBs! Can you recommend any? (must work with Ventura) or is the reason NAS kills direct connect is that if you are connected local over 10 G Ethernet you won't miss direct connect?
