I don't agree with shutting down ebay. You learn how to use it. Do I get burned, yes I do. I look for pricy variety and VAM's in the raw thst are over looked. I would buy a coin on ebay based on how great you think the condition is. I recently bought a 1922 d peace dollar for $50. I graded it with a VAM 4 ddo ms63 valued $1,500.00. That's what I do and use the vast supply to cherry pick from. Hey great video Daniel. I do understand about stock photos, cleaned, polished or overly graded coins and a small percentage of the coins I still get fooled because of lighting, angle and poor quality photos which I try to screen out.

I appreciate your taking the time to put out an educational video like this! It's a shame that eBay doesn't crack down on this very deceitful practice. I can't even imagine how painful it must be for the customer to hear the bad news about these coins when bringing them in to a reputable dealer (not to mention someone like yourself having to be the bearer of such bad news).

Thank you very much for this great information! I was on ebay this weekend and checking nickels. I found quite a few that I believe were altered pictures and false information. I wasn't looking to buy. I was looking for information on varieties and errors. I stumbled across these other and was laughing at their false information and weak pictures. I would click on the pictures to expand and they blurred out. I knew from your information that it was a trap. Thank you very much!

Thanks for touching base on this subject. Multiple subjects honestly. I stopped buying anything from E-bay anymore since last year. I even question values given by E-bay due to the fact all a seller has to do is buy his or her own coin from a different account. Just makes a buyer think. So many scammers are on E-bay anymore it's just not worth the hassle. The last time I bought something on E-bay all of my orders were picked up by scammer sellers. One sent me a bottle of vitamins. Trust! My order had absolutely nothing to do with vitamins what so ever. It took me a mouth to get my money back after talking to customer service for almost a month. I got my money back and see myself lucky I didn't buy a coin or multiple coins and spent some real money on coins. As well as light manipulation to going to real time values of coins. Very nice job Daniel.

I AGREE 100%, Daniel !! That really is a NASTY game to be playing with other people’s money. Great information for those not already remaining vigilant. Cracking out a details-cleaned coin and then selling it raw as if it is problem free instead of telling buyers you know it has been cleaned takes a real carp of a person.

I love buying coins and banknotes, but I only buy PCGS, NGC, and PMG items because of these very reasons. Clint Eastwood said, "A man's got to know his limitations!" Well, I am not a coin expert and if I'm spending a lot of money on a coin or banknote, I want the protection of a major grading company bought from a seller with decades of track record and 100% -99% feedback rating over that time.

    • @Spooky1862
      @Spooky1862 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@buccos2004 Good point! I would be cautious buying certain third-party graded banknotes, however. When it comes to Confederate currency for example, be advised that the graders are mainly looking at the technical grade of the note; they’re not necessarily experts on Confederate currency per se. I’ve seen PCGS and PMG misauthenticate and slab contemporary counterfeits as genuine notes and vice versa. Some of the Civil War-period counterfeits are quite deceptive, so it pays to learn as much as you can.

I like your image of how you shoot your coins. Thats how to properly illuminate a coin, with the light coming in at an angle like that. You highlight marks with that and it shows off the lustre. When you use the coin as a mirror to reflect the light bulb into the camera it washes everything out. People make that mistake on the help forum thinking it helps for seeing details when often it does the opposite. Then theres eBay sellers who think the same thing, or unscrupulous ones that use it intentionally. So good video on pointing this problem out.

Have tried a dozen or more eBay sellers over the years; when I find one that is honest and I am happy with their service, they get repeat business. I've also found that some specialize: certified coins, ungraded coins, mint-state vs circulated, gold coins. Was buying PCGS AU58 gold pieces from a nice guy in Carolina in 2019. First trip just to test the waters, spent a little over 400 with him. When he came thru, I continued to buy. Another seller, had to return a few Pan American 10 oz silver bars as they were fake. He took them back without an argument. Mostly I've not been ripped off. You're 100% right about the photographs but after a while you just know what to avoid.

Oh EXACTLY, Daniel !! I expect good solid photos of every coin I purchase on eBay, Heritage, Great Collections, etc. No photoshopping, PERIOD !! When I receive the coin, I should be able to verify that the coin I received is clearly the one that I saw in the photos of the coin. Naturally, that eliminates quite a few sellers, but that’s fine with me. I need honesty in the transactions that I am a party to.

I see quite a few coin listings on the Bay with altered pictures, as a Newbie I fell for one just recently and fortunately was able to reurn the item,if the image looks strange it is probably and most likely is altered to give a coin a washed out look with more luster. You are safer to some degree with graded coins.

I've been collecting and studying coins since 1964. I also look at TH-cam every day. Has anyone noticed the videos claiming that certain Lincoln pennies from the 30's - 50's have values that extend into hundreds of thousands of dollars. The coins in question could be bought at your local coin dealer for under a dollar. This infuriates me to think these scammers are getting away with this. I usually unload on them in the comments. i take solace in the fact that true numismatists can see through this garbage. A non coin collector thinks it's ridiculous to pay that much for a coin so we know they won't be suckered into this scam.

Thanks Daniel ! You bet ya if I had a better date I would be sending them in for verification/grading and these sellers should too but they don't because it most likely wont come back a straight grade. These sellers are just manipulating the photos and making the coin show better. For a raw coin that is a better date or even a rare date, I prefer to buy from a show where I can hold it in my hand and take a good look at it....Or just buy it authenticated / graded already.

Agreed, eBay’s policy doesn’t allow you to sell firearms, fireworks, tobacco, alcoholic products, they should also tighten down on counterfeit products.
Anyone who disagrees should know, it is legal to sell tobacco and alcohol (within certain regulations and laws), it is NEVER legal to sell counterfeit goods, (especially currency) under any circumstances.

Ebay uses AI to verify reports on any policy violations. I saw a Spanish Reale described and photographed as a 1705 rare coin. It was very rare. The bust on obverse was that of King Charles IIII who was born in 1748. I reported it and received a response from ebay. "We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made using automation or artificial intelligence." but that’s how newbies get scammed. I would rather keep it to a warning about manipulating images. Newbies don’t know coins and can get tripped up thinking a bad photo is of a lottery win.

I went to one of those Road show buying events they hold in hotels.
I took my 1909-0 Barber Half Dollar there.
As soon as the guy saw it he looked on his laptop and started saying there were other Barber halves worth much more and this one is not really rare.
My Barber half is not PCGS graded or slabbed.
However, you can just look at it and see it is in excellent condition.
Next he says they don’t really need that date.
I politely asked him what his opinion of the grade my Barber would be.
He says he is not a grader.
He was making offers on coins from the people before me on ungraded coins and telling them the grade.
I said you have not even looked at my coin under a loop.
He said he didn’t have too as he could not buy it ungraded by PCGS.
He then says he would give me $25 for it ungraded.
I put my barber back in pocket and started to leave.
He said ungraded I won’t even get his offer matched.
So why would he not buy it ungraded?
This coin is in top shape.
Would it help to get it PCGS graded?

Not related to this subject, but, I was bidding the on line auction, never got a response. Turns out the replies were put in my spam folder. Found it accidently! Lesson learned!

My #1 rule on eBay. The seller has to have a lot of positive feedbacks.

I hardly even look at eBay for coins because of all the fraud ones out there, if I do I investigate them first before I decide to buy from them. Have found true for some youtubers who sale also. at auctions bought a coin they showed when it arrived was not same coin.

No, acetone will not and cannot react with coin metal or alloys in general.

If you explain this to ebay in a concise way, while adding the increase to revenue and profit margins. I have seen them implement things rather quickly.

@@CoinHELPu I mean it's a little different. At least you can see the coin live. As far as I know there isn't a way to edit live footage. But still you have to be careful about grading. You have to have a keen eye for it on whatnot. I have one guy who's always honest with me. I still check the coins just in case but I've never had any problems. I say find a seller who's honest on whatnot and stick with him.

I report an average of 10 ebay posts a day of coins that are ACTUAL fakes not just misrepresented and very few of them ever get taken down which is very sad indeed.
Totally agree with you on this ridiculous seller -
One big clue, if the seller doesn't have a bunch of stuff on their site that are called cleaned or in bad shape they are almost certainly selling you THAT stuff. A normal coin dealer has a lot of stuff that is just average because they buy whatever comes in.
