I cant quite get the f sharp right I don't know how to actually play an f sharp, when I try to play the f sharp I place my whole index finger on all 6 strings but the strings generate no sound so if anyone can give me some advice that would be much appreciated.
If you haven’t had help or sorted this yet, here’s a few tips:
• The strings buzz if you press them too lightly to have them firmly contact the fret below your finger, or, if you somehow touch them below the fret (less likely).
• To press firmly takes practice, but also technique. Try:
1) Pulling the neck towards your body with your whole arm not just thinking about pushing your finger flat on the fretboard. Support the rest of the guitar with your chest. (Exercise caution, if you think you’re doing it too hard you may well be, and should look at your finger placement too, which brings us to: 2)
2) Generally you’ll want to use the bonier side of the finger rather than the fat pad palm side. Roll your whole hand slightly outward (little finger further from you not closer) to push the thumb side of your index finger into the strings. This should get better contact with less force.
3) Try partial barre instead, in other places on the neck, just try to get notes to ring out like they normally would if you fretted with a fingertip. Try the Barre version of the cowboy A chord at 2nd fret until it sounds right (don’t play the high e, just A D G and B - or it’ll sound different than a regular A chord). That A chord is a good way to get used to how a barre should work.
4) Repetition, and noting mistakes / looking for solutions as you go. It will come with time and some practice anytime you choose to pick up your guitar, promise.
• Last note, if you have a chance to play a fancy guitar at a store or from a friend, see if you can get the barre working on theirs. It’s possible the action of your strings (distance from neck) is high and making you exert more force to push down the strings. On an acoustic this is hard to fix, lighter strings or a truss rod adjustment might help but this is worth a discussion with a knowledgeable guitarist or guitar tech.
To Caveat this - even if your guitar feels like a junker by comparison to a fancy guitar, if you can fret the notes with your fingertip across the fret you want to barre on and get each single note to ring out - you know you _can_ do the barre even if it’s a bit tougher. With practice, you will.
