    The 80s vhs English dub (streamline) is the one that lives in my head. I love that the new dub was made, that the film was loved and cherished and also, inarguably, improved. But I’ll always hear “TwElVe ThOuSaNd RPMs!!” the same way lol

    I have the standard edition of Akira on 4k Australian release that is Funmation. When I play it on my UB820 it says HDR is on?
    How do you know if you have the version without HDR. Im assuming all the standard editions have HDR as they came out way after the collectors edition. Hopefully? Piss me off if they where allowed to sell it without HDR in Australia.
    Funny thing is, it doesn't have the HDR sticker on the disc or cover? But when I play the movie it says HDR is on?

    I have just received the Funimation disk and now it comes with the 4k Ultra HD as standard in the UK. I must admit to being a bit mixed with this, as I do have issues with HDR generally, as the colours will be different to the original cinema release, as they use different colours spaces and it is generally very hard for HDR to be accurate to the original.

    I'm glad I've seen this now because I was about to give up a British Funimation 4k edition thinking it looked awful, I didn't realise it wasn't HDR which was causing it to be too bright. The only time I've had a UHD in the past that wasn't HDR was an American import of Sergio Leone's man with no name trilogy discs by Kino Lorber. I'll put the brightness down on my projector and give it another go.

    And is it worth paying ALOT more for the japanese version ?

    • @ScottReviews
      @ScottReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends how much you really like Akira and if you have a preference of audio. Hdr is good. Colorful. The funimation doesn’t have HDR and if you want hdr you will have to request a replacement disc from them to get the hdr disc. Audio is better on the Bandai Namco. It also includes the Japanese 2.0 mix that’s missing from the Funimation. But the Bandai doesn’t have the Streamline dub. So it really depends, you can get HDR out of the box with the Bandai Namco or get the Funimation and request the hdr disc and wait a couple of weeks. But I’d imagine the hdr would be similar if not identical to the Bandai namco. I don’t have the replacement funimation disc to test yet.

    Got the FUNimation 4k Blu-ray today and just wanted to check out if I got the HDR disk (which I did) so I popped it in to watch a few minutes of it and... is it just me or does the Japanese 5.1 audio track has extreme dynamic range? Maybe my soundbar's the culprit but the dialogue was barely audible, whisper quiet while the sound effects were window shattering loud.

    • @shoug8387
      @shoug8387 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an issue with the new mix they made for this UHD. Despite appearing to be the same, the Japanese "hypersonic" track on the UHD is a brand new remix that introduces a whole cavalcade of mixing issues.

    I’ve had this on every single format thus far but I feel like I have to pass on this one. If there’s dnr I can’t do it. My 25th anniversary blu has great picture quality and honestly the Japanese 5.1 “hypersonic” track is outstanding. Maybe if they do another release with pristine visuals I’ll finally cave in and replace it.
    Awesome review as usual, very honest!

    • @ScottReviews
      @ScottReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I don't think I said it in the review but the DNR is mild. It reminds me of Batman Begins 4k UHD where in some ways looks better than the blu-ray and then in other moments it doesn't. I've heard people also compare the Ghost in the Shell 4k UHD as being comparable. But of course a DNR free release would be ideal! Thanks again!

    In my personal opinion, the way Funimation handled the 4K release was a complete joke. I feel that they just rushed it out the door considering that they didn’t have the hdr on release day and the lack of a digital copy code. I emailed Funimation and I still haven’t gotten my disc, thank goodness I have the Japanese release to because the hdr really makes the picture pop.

    Tried watching it years ago. Booooring. Never understood Japanamation. Just weird and very low quality animation. Movement looks stilted and awkward. Nothing even close to the mastery of animation that you see with Disney productions. I'm sure there is an appeal for some people to see a cartoon with adult themes, but I was an adult when I tried watching Akira, and by that time I no longer found any value in cartoons, even ones for adults.
