  • A series of exchanges from a recent training session with Norwich HEMA Society.
    Filmed at St Margaret's Church, Norwich. This is a deconsecrated church, which we hire for training.

    When people debate whether or not half-swording was effective/safe/practical, videos like this demonstrate just how vital of a technique it really was.

    What I find interesting about medieval combat is how Plate armor eventually got so effective and Flexible that Knights would simply let themselves be hit cause they knew they'd be able to take it

    • @norwich_hema_society

      There are indeed times where a knight could choose to take a blow to the plates because the armour could take it. It allows riskier behaviour than being without armour. An example being choose to attacked instead of defend a blow knowing your armour can take the hit but your opponent cannot. A "double" ( both fighters scoring a hit) is likely to favour the better armoured opponent

    There are some really interesting dynamics here. The lack of peripheral vision allows for some sneaky thrusts like the one that went under the gorget.

    Love the technique, and love the harnesses.
    I am considering saving up for a late 15th century Itailan export armor. However I am not 100% sure what style the armor should be.
    I am considering an English style Itailan export because I intend to fight mostly on foot.

    I’ve been wondering, is it practical and do we know if knights used their sword normally to target their opponent’s sword with range to gain leverage over it before half swording to close in on an armor gap?
    Obviously with full swording you’re not really going to have the point control necessary to hurt a man in full plate, but I think it’s useful for the range in the weapon control phase of a fight.

    • @norwich_hema_society
      @norwich_hema_society  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's not strictly true. The sword was a secondary weapon but a knight had to be proficient in fighting in armour with a sword, including against other armoured combatants. That was why half swording was developed

    • @youareacoward8459
      @youareacoward8459 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@norwich_hema_society True enough, but you see, like today, it existed talkers and fighters. Talkers liked to look good on the outside with a fancy beautiful sword, and then it existed warriors who could fight for real.
      This is just human nature, and swords were mostly like nice watches are now-something to brag in front of the ladies with.

      @@youareacoward8459 Swords were flashy and not optimal against plate armor, but they were also good backup weapons being versatile and easy to carry. A knight's primary weapon (mace, poleaxe, whatever) tended to be bulky. Going into battle with a second one could hinder their performance, whereas a sword is light enough and could be sheathed in a position where it wouldn't get in the way.
