Nice video! You should do baking soda on each side to see where it’s breaking point is compared to the cotton!
This was my first thought as well. It would be nice to have numbers to determine just how much stronger the baking soda is.
But why would you expect cotton to be the same as soda? They are so different materials. And the well known effect of using soda+superglue is based on chemical reaction with crystallization of material and heat dissipation, I guess you can't see the same with cotton. So it would be weaker to begin with. Cotton is just more comfortable to work with.
Thanks! This video was meant to debunk the viral idea of using cotton instead of baking soda. 👍😎
Thank you that was a great test. I love how consistently the cotton failed. Am I the only one that really wants to see how much it would take for the baking soda ends to fail?
I’m curious too!
I hope to do a test soon to compare the strength of super glue with baking soda, ash, graphite, styrofoam, sand, etc. Pls standby…
😎
The cotton didn't fail. The person doing the test failed.
While I loved this test for small repairs, I'd love to see a flex test.
I mean: sometimes I tried repairing full pieces with baking soda and cyano but they are...yeah, rock hard. They do not bend at all and break.
I think mmmaybe cotton can be less of a rock and more of a metal?
Gonna have a Kill Test too😂
Love the vids so far.
Any chance you could repeat this test with the soda on the bottom and cotton on top please?
Just to cover all bases like you did with ipa activator.
Hmmmm… do you think the forces are different on each end?
@@HacksbyDad Potentially. I know its not intuitive but could you prove me wrong please?
@@jasonwilliam2125This video hasn't gotten many views yet. Maybe I'll consider a redo it if the view count ever reaches 10,000.

@@jasonwilliam2125 Issac Newton thought about this problem: His third law of motion states:
If two bodies exert forces on each other, these forces have the same magnitude but opposite directions. To me this implies it doesn't matter which way is up.
@@eideticgoone7035 Thanks for taking the time to reply. The reason i asked is im not convinced from this set up that the forces were the same. I shall rewatch the vid so i can be more specific.
Would've been nice to see the cotton at the top at least once when pulling.
🤷🏻♂️😎
Put the baking soda at the bottom see if you still get the same results more pulling force on the bottom
thinking the same, should have conducted at least 6 tests
He should swap ends but there is no reason to suppose there's more force acting on the lower thread.
Changing the orientation of the hooks could've changed the results?? I mean, putting the cotton end up?
The test should also be performed with the cotton on top o both parallel as the lower object will have more force applied due to gravity.
Hmmm... are you sure about that? Isn't the force pulling on both eye-screws the same?
@@HacksbyDad No. try it with a spring loaded measure at each end, pulling from top and bottom and you will see more force at the bottom end.
Actually someone’s suggestion to test baking powder at both ends ( or cotton for that matter) should illustrate that the bottom item will give way first if they are both the same structurally.
how about Cotton + Baking Soda??!! thank you for this test
In Baking Soda We Trust
👍😎
Their is a variable three additional tests are needed flipping it around 😂
I agree! OP need to test what happened if he flips it, cotton at top and baking soda at bottom.
Great video! I use the baking soda trick occasionally to fix broken plastic parts, sweep a little into the crack and it’s like getting a full thickness weld.
Thanks! 👍😎
Ah, but what if you did baking soda *and* cotton?
So, mix the weaker ingredient with the stronger ingredient... think about what you're saying.
@@Winglessflight97 They serve different purposes. The fibers provide structure, the baking soda accelerates curing, and will infiltrate the space between the fibers.
Can you test super glue with soda powder vs graphite powder or vs cigarette ash?
Thanks for the suggestion. I just might do that. 😎
@@HacksbyDad I came to your chanel when I wanted to find the answer for the same questuon. :) I see you do a great tests and reasonably dense videos. So I would also appreciate that kind of test. On the other chanel, where a guy showed how to repair plastics by supergluing cigarete ash, there was a discussion whether smaller particles in ash make stronger bonds or the baking soda biger grains work like stones in concrete. It calls gor an experiment. :) I have been already using baking soda, but I found ashes can be used as well only today. So I thought I will do the test and eventually publish it, but it is better to let it for someone who can do it in more metodically.
I look forward for your test. :)
@@fucosk Geez... no pressure! LOL
I'll look into it after the holidays.

What if cotton thread and baking soda used together? Any idea? 🤔
Mixing with baking soda has chemical reaction as shown in other videos. Thus its bond is weaker if just mix with cotton.
SODIUM

AMMONIUM
BICARBONATE,
NULL BAKE!
I never considered using cotton, & now I'm sure I will not. I've used baking soda before with very good results. Great video
Thanks! At the time, there was a viral video about the cotton miracle and I was pretty sure it wasn’t as good as baking soda. 👍😎
Cotton is still good if you need to achieve specific shape around small parts since you can easily wrap it around. Baking soda you can't.
Do you have a chart that compiles the results of all these tests? It would be a super useful reference if you do.
Sorry… no I don’t. Maybe someday. Thanks.
We have a rental property with a plastic sink in one of the bathrooms. There was a hole melted into it from a curling iron. I repaired it with cotton and super glue and it has held up for a long time. I even sanded and painted it.
Awesome! 😎
That one surprised me. thanks
👍😎
Awesome. 💚💛❤️ think tho maybe you could have made one of your tests that was just baking soda. Brilliant work…
👍😎
It makes a difference if the bolt is being pulled from the baking soda versus the Cotton being pulled from the bolt.
You're the second person to say that. I just might need to test it out... in a video of course! LOL
Thanks. 😎
Cotton and super glue works best for applications where you are looking to strengthen a bond. Or to build up a surface (similar to how fiber glass works).
👍😎
Show me the glue name
Fantastic. Thank you.

Pulling the hair from a particular dot cation
Excellent 👍👍👍👍
Thanks! 😎
👏👏👏👏👏
I've heard of people using cotton instead of baking soda. But super glue crystalizes organic material. Whereas the bicarb "molecules create a reactive ion that makes the cyanoacrylate bond more easily to other molecules"
👍😎
Used this the other day on a chipped 3L Glass Ballast. Works every time. I always tell customers to replace the ballast asap though because it’s under 40 psi and half filled with pure oxygen, but gets them by until then.
Can you do an Iron Powder VS Baking soda test?
Eu não entendi esse teste, por favor me explique.
Great video. I use cotton mostly but may switch to baking soda now. Would be good to compare against styrofoam as well. Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks! I might do a follow up test with styrofoam, graphite, etc. 😎
can i ask what is called to that device you used to measure the force required to pull something? sorry, i'm not that really familiar with this thing. very helpful vid!
It's a digital hanging scale. 😎
So,which is good ? BS +GLUE ?
Intriguing
👍😎
Thought so…
👍😎
Should test with a close loop hook!
I need more soda then
This only measures in tension, what about bending, compression, what about the bond with the substance? wood? plastic? metal?
Good ideas! Please give them a try and post your results! 😎
@@HacksbyDad Agreed. This shows tension failure. Shear failure would be interesting too.
What's the best type of super glue to use with baking soda?
I guess it depends on your definition of best. I think Loctite is pretty good if best means fastest curing time.
love this test, how does Styrofoam compare
Sorry... not sure. I haven't tried styrofoam yet. Also saw videos on graphite and toilet paper. Too many to keep up with right now. LOL

Inaccurate test. You're definitely not a science man.
A correct test requires you to FILL the holes with as much cotton as you can, pressing it, and then applying the super glue. This way was pointless.
Oh... should I have packed the holes with the baking soda too? 😎
@@HacksbyDad baking soda "packs" itself.
@@elbigotesdelatienda Too funny! Have you tried either Mr. Science Man?
With cotton the super glue will fast cure at the top 1/4" or so and won't reach below that. The baking soda will cure even faster and maybe you'll get an 1/8" depth of hardened baking soda and powder below that. I tested baking soda in this test... th-cam.com/users/shortsse9VnakWsYQ
