    I wouldn't press a taper bearing on the outer race the rollers can easily mar the bearing surface, always press on the inner race of a bearing

      Use an old inner race and die grind the inner dimension a little to make a tool to easily press the new one damage free😉

      Exactly!! That’s absolutely wrong!! Good way to screw up a bearing cage.. 40 years rebuilding I never do that crap.. You press against the inner bearing race only with a old collar or pipe the same size never ever do what this guy says..This is not how us builders build rear ends at all totally wrong.

    Brings back Vietnam flashbacks of trying to get pinion depth close on a wimpy in comparison Chevy 10 bolt rear end off a gmt400, without a pinion depth gauge. And then the yellow gear paint.

    Never apply force to the bearing surfaces. If you do not have the proper driver one can be fabricated from the old bearing. My tool box has a huge assortment of old bearing races which I use for drivers. Sorry I disagree with this.

  • @MrMopar413
    @MrMopar413 ปีที่แล้ว

    First I’d never press a bearing like that, he probably F-t that bearing up. I don’t know the tonnage force required but a side lateral force like that did that bearing no good, just saying. Second if you have decent old bearings, hone them out so they slip fit on the pinion . Install new races in housing, use pinion depth gauge. Tighten everything up . Then check backlash and teeth pattern. You can get real close. Then disassemble, install new bearings. One way is to heat them up in a hot oil bath to 275 degrees then press on pinion or you can do it cold also. Then reassemble and recheck your specifications. If your building a differential from bare components the process is more difficult and you definitely need a pinion depth gauge to achieve a successful outcome.

    , that goes for all differential you hone out the bearing bore so it just slides on and off then you in doing this you take the press fit so it slides on and off it makes setting up the differential so much easier

    How do I make a setup bearing , and is it guaranteed to be the same as the actual new race I'm installing? Isn't that the purpose of the spacer shims , or are all races made to same tolerance ( by being manufactured in high strength steel) and its only the softer casings that may be cast to less accurate tolerances ?

    • @UintaGarage
      @UintaGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      We'll do a video on making setup bearings soon, but no, they aren't guaranteed to be exactly the same. You do have to double check once you put the final bearings in, but usually it's still good.

    • @ryanf9066
      @ryanf9066 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@calebbitz9469 it’s normal to have an oil slinger but it’s not always used. The D60 we regeared in the Blue Jimmy didn’t have a slinger but we added one that came with the kit. It’s likely it was removed during a previous service.

    • @calebbitz9469
      @calebbitz9469 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ryan F yeah I think whoever rebuilt it didn't put shims back in right spots or the oil slinger. Also noticed my particular dana 44 for my avanti is slightly different than other dana 44s as the axle tubes are different (don't see why that would change location of oil slinger and shims vs same year dana 44s.
