Digital product design or industrial design?

what do you think of an industrial design degree? I'm a high school senior interested in pursing product design or UI/UX design. Any guidance or tips would be helpful!

As a recent industrial design grad, depending on what you put in you can definitely make a killing, but the job market is so over saturated for industrial designers. Software and UI is the place to be so I definitely recommend either a UX major or minor at the very least, as the pay and demand for UX employees is generally always pretty high! Good luck 🙏🏼

Do you need to go to college to get into your field are certifications enough?

A good certification and a solid portfolio should be enough to get into UX - for a job and if not, at the very least as an intern

hi jake im a digital designer and want to become a product designer, im taking ux google course because i had no experience but im a good designer with web development skills, what do you suggest i should do next to land a my dream a product design job?

    • @JakeFerrin

If I were you I would apply to every internship and jr. design role I could find. I would reach out to anyone I know that works in product design and have them review my portfolio and get advice for interviewing. When I’m hiring someone the most impressive thing for me is to see how the candidate's designs actually moved some metric like conversion rates or signups or whatever. Showing that you defined what you were trying to do with the design then measuring somehow after your design goes live to prove your design actually made a difference. This can be done even at a super small scale. You could reach out to anyone you know that has some kind of website, startup, e-commerce, even Facebook ads or something and offer to design something for them for free and have them track the before and after. The Daily UI challenges are actually good too because it shows me you can at the very least design something that looks pretty and you have good taste. Good luck!
