Great Advice!!! I've been an Industrial Designer for roughly 20 years and you pretty much laid it out. One thing for sure is that you never stop learning.

You live and die by your portfolio!
I messed up my first years ignoring my portfolio.
Also, separate from your portfolio, if you have successful sales, distribution, and royalty payout information - have that data ready to hand off.

That last bit about consultancy vs in-house design and making the job into what you want it to be was super nice to hear!

Great advice!. Could you explain a bit more the maths, physics, engineering side?. What if I was a bad student in school on this subjects… what exactly do they use of these on the projects?. Can you pass the year if you are great at modelo it and sketching and ideas but not good in maths and science ?

Really helpful video! I’m a first year Mechanical engineering student and is on the process of transferring to this major. I didn’t know this major existed but I’m glad I found out about it and got info from you :)

@@JuanMendez-dd7kj wow, thanks for responding! I just started ID and Im having a great time as well, but I'd love to integrate my knowledge with something much more technical like mechanical engineering.
I hope we all find what makes us passionate !!! cheers.

Hey @Juan Mendez I am considering a major in Mechanical engineering and absolutely love inventing, but I just don’t know if mechanical engineering will line up with my interest of inventing products for mass populations. I am going to university next fall, but I’ve stumbled across industrial design. Do you think it’s feasible to take mechanical engineering as a major and industrial design as a minor?

4th year at SJSU. Can't design our own projects. We're pretty much all doing the same projects in class. Headphones, lamps blah blah. zero freedom of choice. So glad I'm doing my internship before graduating, school literally sucks. For portfolio review, I went all out and showed CMF heavy images, was told to redo my portfolio to show process from sketching etc. Was quite a literal drag.

That’s the issue on self learning. Going to University to learn a trade is absurd now. U paid $50k to $80k for numbers of years to do self learning & do your own research & share with the info for the Uni. Then what the professor know except having that post paid PHD paper. In business & finance prospective, this is stupid. My as well pay the $ to learn from a real practisional Master of his/this trade.

Can someone actually write what they think about being an industrial design as an industrial designer because they don't seem very happy no offense.

Hey Jimmy, I'm a Mechanical Engineer and want to do Masters. Is Masters in INDUSTRIAL DESIGN a good option or should opt something like UI UX design or the traditional Masters in Mechanical Engineering is better option🌛

From my experience , fresh students in their late teens don't have enough life experience to be consultants, or design, lack craft or trade skills, other than drafting, also not lawyers, social workers, or marketers typically ? , .

Hello! I'm a junior in high school and am trying to decide weather to apply for industrial desgin. Many have told me that I should focus first on a more general major and then specialize in industrial design later. I personaly want to focus on the artistic and aesthetic aspects of design and am avoiding general engineering majors. Should I go into industrial design right away, or should I do it later and start with a general major, even when the artistic aspect is my focus. I have been looking at the ID program at Georgia tech and was wondering whether the industrial desgin major itself limits one at all because of the lack of engineering. What is the best way to approach the industrial design industry?

I also have this problem. I'm about to become a senior and I always wanted to be a designer. I love the artistic and aesthetic aspects of life. At first I wanted to become an interior designer but it was too limited, I also wanted to learn what a graphic designer learns, and I thought Industrial design is a good combo of all designs mixed together; plus it gives you a lot of opportunities because you learn of so many things and you could easily find a job. But I don't really enjoy de engineering part of the insutrial design.

Bro i was asking the same question many times.. i have the lecturer in industrial design,i dont mean to disrespect them but sometimes i feel like they not really giving much of learning to student and even i feel like the info they gave is outdated. Sometimes i understand that they come from different time and maybe at that time they dont have much option like rendering on software etc but still sometimes i feel like they just yapping until the end of the project, sometimes im wondering if they know what they talking about and sometimes i wish they not just talking too but instead show some action too to their student like how they sketch, rendering etc so the student will be more motivated instead correcting student all the time
