It's been just over a year since I made a video detailing eight tips for the Maps app on iPhone, and it's fair to say that quite a lot has changed since then. With that in mind, I thought I'd put together a full tutorial for how to use the Maps app on your iPhone from start to finish. Whether you're planning a road trip in the car or whether you're looking to get around a city on public transport, the maps app on your iPhone is actually really capable these days, and in my opinion is definitely able to compete with the likes of Google, but it can be a little complicated if you’re not sure what you’re doing with it. Also there's a major new feature coming to iOS 17 that I think is going to be a game changer for a lot of people and I'll talk about that later on in this video.

Several people have commented about the "parked car" feature not being available in the settings menu. To enable this, there is a setting buried in the privacy section under location services, system services named "Significant Locations" that has to be enabled. Once enabled, turn the phone off and back on; that should fix the problem
Awesome thank you.
Thanks much.
I cannot find this setting
@@Tesnobay It is ’Settings’ then ‘Privacy & Security’ then 'Location Services’ then ’System Services’ (this is at the bottom and NOT in alphabetical order) then ’Significant Locations’. Once enabled then turn phone on and off. It was the ‘System Services’ not being in alphabetical order that initially foxed me!
You can also enable it simply by telling Siri to do it, saving all the digging around!
I tend to use Maps as my primary navigation app, but I do have to say that whenever a certain location isn't available or not up to date, on Google Maps it is always up to date/available.
Me too. I tend to use Apple Maps as my primary navigation, and Google Maps as my observational app.
They are closing the gap though pretty quickly though.
I hear this from people a lot, but in my experience and in my particular area, Google Maps is way more likely to get things wrong than Apple Maps. It's actually quite funny.
@@adamtajyar nowhere near google maps and waze. Leave maps standing. Still
@@SurfinTheKaliYuga my experience is the opposite. The directions Google maps suggests seem to be more accurate / quicker. Mind you, because of that, I haven’t used Apple Maps for quite some time. The last time I compared, I was far more likely to find a business or a landmark using Google Maps.
Apple are obligated to keep Apple Maps going because there is nothing preventing Google to stop developing for the iPhone at some future point.
Having said all that, I probably use Waze more than Google Maps, though I understand that Waze was purchased by Google (why?) a few years ago.
Having watched a handful of your videos now, I really appreciate your presentation methods and get-to-the-point style. No filler, just very useful information presented in a clean and easy to digest way. Thank you for your videos. I really appreciate the work that you put into them.
I used to use Google maps all the time but have recently moved back to Apple Maps as I find it’s significantly improved over the years. I was very impressed on one journey when it led me in and through an outdoor car park, told me to park and then get out and walk to my destination. Thanks for a very clear and well presented video. I would recommend this to anyone who is using maps for the first time as you’ve clearly explained all of its features and operation. I even learnt a few things myself. Cheers 😊
I appreciate the consistency in your walkthroughs of your Tutorials. Its refreshing to see that and know that with every video you publish, I know what to expect.
I've been a lifelong Google Maps user till last month. We helped move our daughter to another state and had to drive 2400 miles. the features of Apple Maps was awesome. I now have been using your videos to setup fav's and locations to help me navigate when we go back to visit next month. Thanks so much for the information, I find it very easy to use and it will help immensely...
Maps is very much improved these days, but I still flick between 3 mapping apps.
Google Maps has better data integration with transport providers. This is essential for big cities - I hate running to catch something only to realise the Maps timetable is wrong… Waze & Google both have better traffic info. Google is the king of location info & links.
All 3 apps have pros & cons & I would like Maps to be my go to, but it’s a still a long way off the competition by in some areas.
I also cant navigate with my bicycle in apple maps and thats really a problem for me
@@philipmeisterl well depending on where you live because this feature is relatively new to iOS and apple has to expand all those features to all places. Since half a year Germany for example has bike maps now too
I’ve used both quite a lot because I was doing DoorDash for a while. My personal preference by a long shot is Apple Maps. It’s really come along way over the years and recently when I was in Brighton England, one of Apples street view cars drove by me. (They call it look around). A lot of people don’t know that over the last five years Apple has quietly been working on their own version of street view, and it is absolutely amazing. It blows Google Earth street view out of the water.
Also, I find Siri’s voice to be a lot more pleasant than the one Google maps uses to give directions. On my recent trip to England I had no problem getting transit information in the Maps app and it was never wrong. The GPS was phenomenal and I never would’ve been able to get around without it. You don’t realize how powerful the maps app is until you go travelling believe me.
It’s Apple Maps for me.
Great overview! You are a fantastic ambassador for the Apple ecosystem.
I exclusively use Apple Maps these days and am looking forward to the ability to store a regional map to ensure ease of navigation.
Way, way back when, map storage was the norm on devices not connected to the internet because it was 1998. 😂 An external GPS module sat on the car dashboard as I navigated around my sales territory.
25 years later I am looking forward to having those downtown city maps again so I can explore when I’m not connected to the internet - like when I’m sitting on an airplane.
Excellent summary of the Apple Maps functionality. I've used Apple Maps for some time, from back in the beginning when you might end up in some cow pasture 100 miles from your destination, until now, when it is quite a bit better. Not perfect by any means, but better. While I've used Apple Maps, I still have not used some of the basic features you bring up in this video, such as enabling the compass, which I like. My small frustrations using Maps over the last couple of years center on not being familiar with the basic functionality of the app. This video fairly well cured me of these concerns. By the way, your videos are awesome: nicely designed and lighted, well-filmed and edited. Keep up the good work!
I found your channel about a month ago. I have learned so much!! Thank you for clear and concise explanations. I typically use Google maps but, after watching this video; I have set up Maps the correct way and give this a try. Thanks again 🙏
I’m glad that Maps will finally be getting the ability to download sections for off-line viewing in dead-zones. Been using it for quite a while with Google Maps when travelling. There were a few tips I hadn’t used before with Apple Maps.
I am so impressed with the voice clarity of the videos. This is so helpful when focussing on what is being explained.
ALWAYS love your videos, Mr. Proper. SO nice to learn and watch.
Just wanted to say thank you for taking your time to present to us all of your wonderful, useful information. Very much appreciated.👌
Really enjoy this channel. Straightforward information given to us in a way that is easy to understand. Thank you, keep it up.
Wow, chock full of super useful information. Great job Tom!
Wow. All of those features sound great. I look forward to using them. And you did a terrific job explaining the features.
Very slick having the map download complete just as you were done talking about that feature!
This was a fun video to watch. I am looking forward to the iOS17 updates to Apple Maps. This app has made tremendous improvements in the last 2 years and it is easily my map app preference. Anybody in the Apple ecosystem should use this app always.
This is a FABULOUS!!!! tutorial. I listened to it twice. You are THE best! Thank you so much for this tutorial. ❤❤❤
I use WAZE on any highway trips. It has saved me tons of time and aggravation when it advises getting off a particular route because of a reported accident or event up ahead. It is the MAIN feature I want to have. If Apple was as good, I would switch.
I've had Apple Maps do this pretty often for a while now. It'll detect traffic and tell you there's a faster route if you wish to take it.
@@CGingerbreadman I love that Waze has poiice radar information. Even though I drive with the flow of traffic I have a feeling it's likely saved me a few tickets over the years.
@@planinshek So true. Especially in those small towns where they set up speed traps in the 25 MPH zones…
I’m hooked on Waze. The fact it shows my current speed next to the posted speed. Not to mention all the warnings of items on road, etc
KILLER!!! this tutorial could not be any more perfect. Subscribed.
I use it now from watching your previous video on it. 👍🏽👏🏽
I love Waze for the crowd sourced features. I always use Maps though as I have several favourites set up to automatically send eta to particular people. My fave feature of maps.
Thanks for a great and informative video, keep up the good work.
I’ve been using Apple Maps for years. I’ve tried using Google maps twice since moving to iPhone but it got me lost BOTH times. When those times happened, Apple Maps correctly got me to where I needed to go. I was really astonished at how that played out. I also love how Apple Maps will wake the screen and show full screen progress instead of just a notification about an upcoming turn. PS I’m on iOS 17 beta 3 currently and have noticed that adding a stop puts it where it should go…. In the middle. Cheers
Really enjoy your iPhone content it’s so clear and easy to follow, thank you
Love your reviews and information. Thank you. I use Waze when driving because it lets me know the location of mobile speed cameras and police using radar, not just fixed permanent locations. Cheers
Great video mate.Keep up the good work
Content, style, knowledge of subject, all A+++. Thank you
Your voice is very calming. 😌
Apple maps is definitely getting better, as a truck driver adding low bridges and other restrictions, as a button, would be useful as other apps currently are not supporting this and could be a advantage. At the moment for driving a car Waze is my go to and Google maps for cycling.
I sometimes just watch your content for your calm and soothing voice, to relax! Of course I learn along as well ;)
Great tutorial on features and updates. Thank you.
Good video and I am buying a New 2023 Buick on Monday and will be using Maps with it, this video will be a lot of help. Thanks
After watching this I might give Maps another try.
For driving Waze is my personal favourite.
Dishoom queue length notification would be handy 😊
Wow! This is pretty awesome. It’s almost a replacement for Atlas Obscura or Roadtrippers but you can only add up to 15 locations… not enough for a road trip. Maybe adding this to Guides so that you can save historical maps of trips and combine locations with photos. I see where they are going but it’s still not there yet. Thanks! This video was very informative.
This video is some high quality informative content. Crisp and clean. Thank you - that's a subscribe!
Informative video. Thank You. 🤗
I have used Apple Maps for years and with this video I have learned so much about its capabilities, thanks!
Holy cow, this has to be the best “how to” video I have ever watched in my entire life! Kudos to you.
I am a new subscriber and will be signing up with notifications for sure.
I just had to let you know how amazing your videos are. The transitions, editing, and narration were magnificent. There was not a single wasted word!!!
Thanks for the guidance on Apple Maps… I used to believe this app was useless. Now it is going to be my go to APP.
Honestly, Apple should be PAYING YOU for this content! All I can say is Wow, just WOW! The effort you must’ve put into this…
If you could do the same for TH-cam Premium I would be in heaven lol. 😂😂
Take care brother.
Absolutely agree! This is a fantastic "How to" guide as are all of his guides. Brilliant!
Omg I love your videos you are so cool and amazing. You’re a fantastic teacher. Good work 😊
When I first got a smartphone I defaulted to using Google Maps because of the bad reputation Maps earned early in its history. Almost 5 years ago I got an Apple Watch and liked how well Maps integrated with the Watch, so I've remained mostly loyal to Maps ever since. It's worked well for me and I've increasingly begun to use more of its features.
Fantastic Info! Thank you!!
Brit brother, thanks again mammothly much for helpful thing! Happy subscriber here. Cheers mate! 🇺🇸💛🇬🇧
Thank you very much for your videos which I find very useful. also a big thank you for not speaking fast so everyone can understand what you say, it means a lot to me as I come from Denmark
Great video and the update looks nice. May even switch from google maps
Apple Maps is my #1. Good video.
Just stumbled across this and am so excited to learn these things. I dumped Apple Maps for Waze way back when Waze was still a baby app because it had so many of these features and was a lot more accurate. I may now reconsider using Apple again or go between the two depending on the situation. Thanks again!
Excellent tutorial. Many thanks!
I use Apple Maps exclusively! Thanks for the great video.
Another really helpful video. Thanks you
You are very clear, precise and relevant. I wish you could do a video for other apps that I use, ProPresentor and Apples Final Cut. I could listen to your voice and it’s clear, precise and relevant information. Some guys are not as good as you, you are really good. I just subscribed, you got me . . . . AWESOME!
Indeed, this has improved significantly. I'm eager to try it out and see how it performs.
Been using Apple eco system for years, but always had to use Google maps as my go to option. I will try iMaps from now. Great info thanks.
Excellent - great teaching demo
Hi thanks for posting some very useful tips for me-something I wasn’t aware how to do (thanks to IDB channel) is to adjust font sizes for maps only and particularly for drivers. You might like to add this for your viewers as well.
Very useful. I switched to Apple Maps as my primary map app awhile ago.
I love your stuff! Thanks!
Is this ASMR? There is something so satisfying about hearing something explained clearly and methodically.
🙋♂️THANKS FOR A PROPER UPDATE 🤗👍💚💚💚
nicely done guide! Thanks. The app is definitely better than it was but I'm still missing the option to create and save a route so I can ride it on my motorcycle at a later time
Always been a TomTom fan, looks like I've got to wake up and smell the coffee. Great informative video. Thank you
Very well made manual, congrats!
Being based in the NY metro area, I tend to use Waze as my go-to app for directions. It's quite popular around here, and as a result, I feel the traffic conditions are more current because of the crowd-sourcing input. Granted, when it changes your route, it mostly won't improve your arrival time by more than a few minutes. Good to see that Apple has improved their app somewhat.
Thank you, very educational!
You breezed right over the part I was most interested in. The arrow icon has more than just one option! I'm trying to figure out what a couple of those options represent.
Looks better than before, will give it a try. Thanks
I hope one day Maps will be able to rival Waze for driving navigation. I don’t think it will have me swapping anytime soon though.
Ditto!
All your video are very informative and useful... Kindly make a video for transferring the file folder from PC to iPhone... Thank you 🙏
Great review, as I now have a iPad Pro with 2T . Viking Polaris trip to Toronto to NYC. then Viking Saturn to Athens to Spain. Guides and Offline Maps will be worth for these trips.. and excursions. Thank y0u!
Great video! Very helpful. One feature that used to be available was to stick to main roads. Now maps tends to send you down every nook and cranny even onto dirt roads to save it seems 12 feet in distance. Madness. Any suggestions?
These Tutorials of yours are great well thought out the directions are clear. I dont seem to have a three D option Im sure I will find a way to sofrt this
Thanks a lot outstanding very valuable info thanks a lot
Excellent. Thanks
This was really useful. Thank you. I use a mobility scooter, due to heart failure, and I had no idea I could stop- it from defaulting to driving my car (I can’t drive due to being considered too high a risk, don’t want a heart attack behind the wheel of a car) or that if I set it to default to walking, I could tell the app not to recommend routes with stairs and steps.
So helpful
Thank you
I’ve also learned from you how to move the cursor on my phone without prodding and poking the screen and how to find images on my phone without endless scrolling
Thanks for that, too

I appreciate this. I have used Google Maps for years because years ago the Apple Maps did not seem so robust. Now is see that I will do everything I need it to do. I am sure that Microsoft and Samsung and Google all have great products but I am pretty much an Apple guy to the core.
When Google Maps was the only option, we had no other choice. When Apple made their own map app it was a little rickety at first but I've been using it for years now and really dislike the Google maps interface and have a hard time adapting to it. I only go there if I feel that I might get more information from it than Apple Maps but that has proved to rarely be the case anymore.
Same.
That was so useful, thanks,
That was a great video!
I use Apple Maps almost exclusively. I taught my husband to use Apple Maps and he loves it. It’s easy for him to use and that’s exactly what he needs.
I still use WAZE as my primary driving guidance map app, due to its speed in reacting to traffic holdups and providing rapid alternative routes.
I use Google maps because it is so well integrated with Google search in the browser. Maps is getting more interesting because it is apparently improving and I really can appreciate getting directions on my Apple watch. The Apple ecosystem works so well.
Very interesting and helpful description of Apple's updated maps. Thanks
I use the Waze app a lot, as it’s very road user based, which I find very helpful, especially for hidden police trying to trap us road users for speeding etc and I Just wish Apple would display my GPS driving speed and alert when going over the road speed limit, Maybe one day I will get my wish
Oh, Proper Honest Tech, keep up the great work, I appreciate your knowledge and effort you put into each TH-cam clip
Cheers
Pieter
Yes the ability to be alerted about police traps and the re-routes spro on, that is the reason I will stick with Waze for now!
Very useful 👍🏻👍🏻Thank you very much 🙏🏼🍀
Based on this video i tried Apple Maps on a trip to Bellvue and back to Utah in a uhaul. It worked great! And saved me a speed camera ticket. So I owe you a coffee!
Q; How do you record the screen and place it on an iPhone and the white background?
Avoiding hills is a neat feature, we once drove with our ambulance from coast to coast. The patient had cysts of the wall of her lungs so she couldn’t fly. We even couldn’t drive through Denver, that it too high
I do not know if this is already mentioned but the integration of Maps with the Applewatch is fantastic. While navigating the instructions are displayed on your watch in a very precise manner.
My favorite part being that it'll vibrate to let you know a turn or exit you need to take is coming up
The watchOS 10 integration is even better than 9. I’ve been using the betas since it came out and Maps on both the iPhone and the watch has gotten so much better. The maps app on the watch is so much cleaner and more transparent towards the background. Traffic data is also better
Pleasant and easy to understand 👍
Having tested Apple Maps, Google Maps & Waze regularly for the last few years I have found that Google Maps seems to have the most accurate and quickest navigation. All apps have occasional glitches where they might suggest turning, then do a U turn instead of simply continuing straight ahead. I have been using Apple Maps more regularly in the last few months however for the quickest & most reliable route I'll resort to Google maps. I noticed an interesting thing last week ... I have an adapter in my car to enable wireless Apple Carplay. Sometimes, randomly, it will crash and restart itself (annoyingly when I'm checking to see if I need to turn off the highway). I suspect this glitch is caused by the quality of the USB port in the car. When it restarts, Google Maps will show the last trip, and you have to press start to continue. Apple Maps will simply return to the journey, no pressing required. So that's a bonus. Also, when using Siri, google maps rarely seems to work whereas Apple Maps seems a bit better. Do you know if there is a setting in Apple Maps to tweak the algorithm for shortest distance or eco friendly / fuel efficient?
Establishing stops on an itinerary remains a mystery to me. Which is the icon to be used, etc? Is my Italian version "mappe" missing sometihing?
Thanks!
Hi, as usual a great and informative video. the map app is almost as good as Google but one thing lacking is showing my current speed, in addition to, as the app already does, showing the current as the speed limit. I find this is handy when driving om Major trunk roads or motorways where there are roadworks with a reduced speed limit and Average Speed camaeras. The tendandcy is to vary the size of the box (camera to camera ). It is easy on these roads especially where there are roadworks and a reduced speed limit. If you have cruise control then thats the way to maintain the speed limit but if you don't it is easy to break the speed limit without realising it. Just a suggestion which will help drivers not get points on there licence and also make the road safer. I know all cars have a speedometer but when driving on a busy trunk road you are more looking at the traffic around you than your speedometer. Both my old SatNavs which I don't use anymore had this function, as well as an average speed which you could reset when you enter an Average Speed Camera box and thus keep within the law
Just a thought that that function would be a nice addition
First time reader here -- and very impressed by both thee presentation and content. I was unaware of several of the features discussed; and had never really taken the time to understand more fully how the app works, I saw a fleeting reference to a link to catch the weekly newsletter - which I'd do in a heartbeat. But I'm not seeing how to do that here. Only subscribe to the channel (not the newsletter). In any event, thank you for the thoughtful and highly useful content.
Thanks for the great info. I do not have the bottom three setting: ride & restaurant booking and show parked location (which would be very helpful. I have a 14 running iOS 17.0.2. Any suggestions?
Very good video. Thank you.
Great video! I refuse to use Google Maps, so am very glad to hear of these improvements.😆
Why do you refuse to
@@Yes-uf2je Because I despise their invasive data-collecting practices. Maybe you haven't heard about them.
