    Several people have commented about the "parked car" feature not being available in the settings menu. To enable this, there is a setting buried in the privacy section under location services, system services named "Significant Locations" that has to be enabled. Once enabled, turn the phone off and back on; that should fix the problem

      @@Tesnobay It is ’Settings’ then ‘Privacy & Security’ then 'Location Services’ then ’System Services’ (this is at the bottom and NOT in alphabetical order) then ’Significant Locations’. Once enabled then turn phone on and off. It was the ‘System Services’ not being in alphabetical order that initially foxed me!

    I used to use Google maps all the time but have recently moved back to Apple Maps as I find it’s significantly improved over the years. I was very impressed on one journey when it led me in and through an outdoor car park, told me to park and then get out and walk to my destination. Thanks for a very clear and well presented video. I would recommend this to anyone who is using maps for the first time as you’ve clearly explained all of its features and operation. I even learnt a few things myself. Cheers 😊

      @@BasedHyperborean my experience is the opposite. The directions Google maps suggests seem to be more accurate / quicker. Mind you, because of that, I haven’t used Apple Maps for quite some time. The last time I compared, I was far more likely to find a business or a landmark using Google Maps.
      Apple are obligated to keep Apple Maps going because there is nothing preventing Google to stop developing for the iPhone at some future point.

    I’ve used both quite a lot because I was doing DoorDash for a while. My personal preference by a long shot is Apple Maps. It’s really come along way over the years and recently when I was in Brighton England, one of Apples street view cars drove by me. (They call it look around). A lot of people don’t know that over the last five years Apple has quietly been working on their own version of street view, and it is absolutely amazing. It blows Google Earth street view out of the water.
    Also, I find Siri’s voice to be a lot more pleasant than the one Google maps uses to give directions. On my recent trip to England I had no problem getting transit information in the Maps app and it was never wrong. The GPS was phenomenal and I never would’ve been able to get around without it. You don’t realize how powerful the maps app is until you go travelling believe me.
    It’s Apple Maps for me.

    Excellent summary of the Apple Maps functionality. I've used Apple Maps for some time, from back in the beginning when you might end up in some cow pasture 100 miles from your destination, until now, when it is quite a bit better. Not perfect by any means, but better. While I've used Apple Maps, I still have not used some of the basic features you bring up in this video, such as enabling the compass, which I like. My small frustrations using Maps over the last couple of years center on not being familiar with the basic functionality of the app. This video fairly well cured me of these concerns. By the way, your videos are awesome: nicely designed and lighted, well-filmed and edited. Keep up the good work!

    Google Maps has better data integration with transport providers. This is essential for big cities - I hate running to catch something only to realise the Maps timetable is wrong… Waze & Google both have better traffic info. Google is the king of location info & links.

    Ive just come back to Apple after 7 years on Android. It's pretty good now and most of pet peeves have been addressed in some way or another. The two main things that really irk me though are Apple maps just not being as good as Google Maps when using the search function and Siri just not being as good as Google Assistant. Several times I have asked both to do the same task and Google nails it where Siri fails.

    Having tested Apple Maps, Google Maps & Waze regularly for the last few years I have found that Google Maps seems to have the most accurate and quickest navigation. All apps have occasional glitches where they might suggest turning, then do a U turn instead of simply continuing straight ahead. I have been using Apple Maps more regularly in the last few months however for the quickest & most reliable route I'll resort to Google maps. I noticed an interesting thing last week ... I have an adapter in my car to enable wireless Apple Carplay. Sometimes, randomly, it will crash and restart itself (annoyingly when I'm checking to see if I need to turn off the highway). I suspect this glitch is caused by the quality of the USB port in the car. When it restarts, Google Maps will show the last trip, and you have to press start to continue. Apple Maps will simply return to the journey, no pressing required. So that's a bonus. Also, when using Siri, google maps rarely seems to work whereas Apple Maps seems a bit better. Do you know if there is a setting in Apple Maps to tweak the algorithm for shortest distance or eco friendly / fuel efficient?

  • @bjsmithart
    @bjsmithart ปีที่แล้ว +6

    99%+ of the time I use a maps app is with CarPlay in one of our vehicles. Waze is my go-to. I want to use and enjoy Apple Maps, but I get frustrated with the lack of settings. It always attempts to guess where I want to go. That would be fine if it still showed me a standard view, but it shows an overview of the entire route with an arrow that travels around it without rotating the map. If I visit a place so often that Maps knows I’m going there, I don’t need turn by turn directions. I have to tap several buttons to get back to the main nav view. I like the 3D perspective view. I should be able to set that as the default view instead of having to change it from 2D every time I get in my vehicle. I should also be able to set zoom levels. There are times when I’m on slower roads (35mph or less … neighborhoods, downtowns, etc) where it zooms in so close on my location that I can’t see upcoming roads until I’m on top of them. None of these things are issues in Waze or Google Maps when using CarPlay.

    Thanks for a great tutorial!
    I have been using Apples maps for directions and wanted to learn how to use the trip planning features.
    I started using it instead of Google Maps when I got an Apple watch. Nice having turn by turn directions thumping you on the wrist :)

    After seeing one of your past videos on the Maps app, i gave it a solid try for 3 months as my main driver. I use public transit mostly, and i dont find it showed me nearly as many options as google does, unfortunately. It would offer only 1-3 ways of getting somewhere, where google has at least 3 ways presented to you. For driving, it’s great!

    You breezed right over the part I was most interested in. The arrow icon has more than just one option! I'm trying to figure out what a couple of those options represent.

    Avoiding hills is a neat feature, we once drove with our ambulance from coast to coast. The patient had cysts of the wall of her lungs so she couldn’t fly. We even couldn’t drive through Denver, that it too high

    Wow! This is pretty awesome. It’s almost a replacement for Atlas Obscura or Roadtrippers but you can only add up to 15 locations… not enough for a road trip. Maybe adding this to Guides so that you can save historical maps of trips and combine locations with photos. I see where they are going but it’s still not there yet. Thanks! This video was very informative.

    Good “now”? Better than good for years. Better than Google for years. Better looking interface, not as much ad-spam clutter. And the most important part it tells you things like “Go past this light and turn right at the next light” as your directions instead of “in 800 feet, turn right” like I’m going to bust out a ruler.

    Just stumbled across this and am so excited to learn these things. I dumped Apple Maps for Waze way back when Waze was still a baby app because it had so many of these features and was a lot more accurate. I may now reconsider using Apple again or go between the two depending on the situation. Thanks again!

    This was really useful. Thank you. I use a mobility scooter, due to heart failure, and I had no idea I could stop- it from defaulting to driving my car (I can’t drive due to being considered too high a risk, don’t want a heart attack behind the wheel of a car) or that if I set it to default to walking, I could tell the app not to recommend routes with stairs and steps.
    So helpful
    Thank you
    I’ve also learned from you how to move the cursor on my phone without prodding and poking the screen and how to find images on my phone without endless scrolling
    Thanks for that, too

    Apple Maps has really getting quite good, however untill cycling navigation is rolled out here in the Netherlands I'm sticking to Google...
    Amazes me how they didn't do it yet, there's about 1,4 bicycles for each person in the Netherlands...

    Hi, as usual a great and informative video. the map app is almost as good as Google but one thing lacking is showing my current speed, in addition to, as the app already does, showing the current as the speed limit. I find this is handy when driving om Major trunk roads or motorways where there are roadworks with a reduced speed limit and Average Speed camaeras. The tendandcy is to vary the size of the box (camera to camera ). It is easy on these roads especially where there are roadworks and a reduced speed limit. If you have cruise control then thats the way to maintain the speed limit but if you don't it is easy to break the speed limit without realising it. Just a suggestion which will help drivers not get points on there licence and also make the road safer. I know all cars have a speedometer but when driving on a busy trunk road you are more looking at the traffic around you than your speedometer. Both my old SatNavs which I don't use anymore had this function, as well as an average speed which you could reset when you enter an Average Speed Camera box and thus keep within the law
    Just a thought that that function would be a nice addition

    I want to use Apple Maps instead of Google Maps, but they still don't have cycling routes as an option in the Netherlands. It's also hard for me to understand why they don't work on this feature here in the Netherlands, since most people out here cycle while in the U.S. it's not really usual for people to use their bike for their commute. Also Google Maps is way better showing the fastest route and is better up-to-date. It also shows which roads are busy and gives you several options to reach your destination.

    • @ProperHonestTech

      A lack of cycling routes in Maps in Holland could borderline be considered culturally insensitive! 😂 I’m AMAZED they don’t have them!

    • @prodbyjohn
      @prodbyjohn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ProperHonestTech It's probably not even that hard to implement it. There already is up-to-date data on every cycle path in the Netherlands, so they just need to take that data and put it in their maps.

    • @ifitrollsrideit530
      @ifitrollsrideit530 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@prodbyjohn They don't even do cycle routing in the UK (unless you exclusively consider central London to be the whole UK). Apple Maps is still rubbish.

    I appreciate this. I have used Google Maps for years because years ago the Apple Maps did not seem so robust. Now is see that I will do everything I need it to do. I am sure that Microsoft and Samsung and Google all have great products but I am pretty much an Apple guy to the core.

    Not being able to preference light/dark mode on the maps is a non-starter for me. I would also like see my current speed alongside the speed limit
