My biggest issue with Predator 2018 is that it feels like they had 4 different movies and decided to do all of them at once: 1.) regular family re-connects as they face down a Predator; 2.) government conspiracy movie where officials try to hide the existence of Predators; 3.) Predator vs. Afghanistan and Iraq vets who already know their government has screwed them over compared to the more naive characters from the first film; and 4.) what about the Predators who don't think hunting humans is morally okay? If they'd committed to one of these ideas and fleshed out the story, it had a shot at being great.
Like Hellboy 2019, a lot of The Predator was shot, but immediately scrapped. From friendly Predators driving tanks, to a real sexual predator hired for a scene by Shane Black, that movie should've never seen the light of day.

I would rank Prey below Predator 2, just because how much fun Predator 2 is and how it expands the mythology and arsenal of the predators. Prey is an awesome experience at first viewing, but I don’t think it will hold up with multiple rewatches like the Original or Predator 2.
You mean the predators kill count ; the exciting fight against the French fur traders; the fact that a "primitive" group of peoples beat an alien with advanced tech. Honestly yes Predator2 is/was fun. However the movie Prey is far better for one. I could have done without the sudden jarring sex scene that came out of nowhere in Predator2. Talking about tone shift you go from intense gang war violence to sudden intense sex scene. Which then evolves into a torture murder scene. No thanks that's just gratuity for no reason. Seriously Prey introduces Bolas, a shield, a dart gun, a modular combi stick. Unpopular opinion Prey is better than Predator2, and just as good as Predator 1. Honestly Predator 2 is kinda trash. It's only good because it's the best in comparison to AVP, AVPR, Predators, The Predator. Seriously the scene where The Feral Predator just eviscerates the French Fur traders. Those scenes alone make it the best fight scenes much less the best Predator movie of all time.......so far Prey 2 hopefully makes it even more exciting. I'd watch Predator one any day. However I have to be in a certain mood to watch any of the other movies. Prey hands downed saved the Predator franchise. The shift to pre colonial America was great. The Comanche tribe was great. Tabbe was an awesome character, and brother to Naru. He respected and actually took Naru's words into consideration what a great brother, and war chief. Seeing a strong female lead protagonist too! *Chef's kiss* Also can't go wrong with a dog as a sidekick. This movie is literally the only movie on the same level as Predator. I know I'd get crucified for that opinion. I think people have nostalgia glasses on too much that's why everyone sucks off Predator1&2 even though while good; they're not that great. Prey wasn't perfect by any means. Every movie has it's flaws. However this would be my rankings. 1.Prey/ Predator 2. Predators 3.AVP 4.Predators 2 5. The Predator 6.AVPR Again this is just my opinion.
@@yoshijb9428 The prey movie was decent at best dude. It doesn't deserve to be put in the same place with the original. 1)Predator 2)Predator 2 3)Avp 4)Prey 5)Predators I really enjoyed the movie. It was a good action flick, mainly due to the Predator. But some things were really bad. One was the fact that the girl was young and supposedly bad at hunting, yet she managed to kill multiple armed men attacking her at once. This would have made sense if she was a warrior but the movie doesn't indicate that. On the contrary she is portrayed as a young inexperienced girl. Not only that, but she fights the Predator in hand to hand combat despite the fact that Predators are way stronger than humans. And the Predator didn't even bother to look for his helmet after he lost it. He was the dumbest Predator from the whole franchise My other issue was the cold flower. It seemed like a lazy way to escape the Predator's vision. And it was also not consistent throughout the movie. The body of the French guy with the missing leg was cold, yet his blood trail was hot. The girl said in the beginning that the flower would cool your blood. The guy didn't even have time to digest the plant and he was cold already. Also, you would die if your temperature dropped that much. Normally human bodily temperature is at 37⁰C but if it drops under 35⁰C you get hypothermia. The original Predator movie made more sense. The mud didn't lower Arnold's bodily temperature, it temporarily masked it. The mud scene happened only 1 minute after Arnold exited the water. He was also covered by tree roots and the background was the same mud he was covered in. That's more than enough time to temporarily hide yourself from the Predator. We see the girl display no effects of hypothermia, no shivering, no numbness, no nothing. If the flower truly induced effects similar to hypothermia, she wouldn't have been able to fight the Predator. Heck, she moves like a ninja! And even if the flower dropped her temperature without the effects of hypothermia, she would still be visible on a thermal camera, because she was in a cold forest, while Arnold was in a hot jungle. Her siluete would stand out.
Great video mate. It's cool seeing how the films evolved and changed. I think the Predator works best as a critique of violence and trophy hunting. The undertones of satirizing America's tactic of invasion and regime change in South America and the invasion of Vietnam, adds another level of depth that no other film in the franchise has been able to capture. Predator is really at it's core metaphysical manifestation of violence whether it's imperialist violence in the first film or urban violence and unrest in the sequel. It's so strange how Predator period pieces are so rare in cinema as the concept is just so fucking cool and lends itself to truly incredible action scenes. For me, I feel like Predator 2 is the underrated gem of the franchise. It works so well as an action film and Glover is amazing in the role in an almost Die Hard like unexpected hero kinda way. It may just be nostalgia speaking, but I really like a lot of what the first AVP does.
Re: Predator is strange because there's been no single guiding voice. I reckon this is the series' strength. Alien manages this *way* better, as for a very long time it felt like a sandbox for young hungry filmmakers to express themselves. Predator is also that, with the difference being that the swings are either for the fences or way too safe. It makes the high moments higher, but the low moments much lower.
Brilliant work Matt, as always. The Predator might be my favorite of the 80s slasher movie monster genre I've caught up on, and I'm very happy Prey was as good as it was.
Thanks! I've done videos on Halloween 1, 2, and unmade sequels, so I'm covering that series a little differently. There will be more Halloween videos soon!
The idea of Royce and Isabelle going back to earth to find its 300 years in the future and meeting space marines and fighting xenomorphs is the coolest shit I've ever heard. I love prey and predators but I need that movie.
I can’t say I was expecting Dark Side of FTR to make a little appearance in this Predator retrospective, but props to ya. May the DMCA gods be kind for this one EDIT: Just remembered who it was that put Shinsuke Nakamura’s theme in their Millenium-era Godzilla retrospective too. Sneaky bastard, distracting me from the points you’re making with great entrance themes
Great retrospective as always, Matt. You had me cracking up while you drew and quartered AVP: Requiem. Your judicious and infrequent use of expletives absolutely paid off. Requiem 🤣 Nicely done. Respect. And I fucking adored Prey❤️
I’m liking the current buzz online for another historical setting, Prey 2: Bushido🇯🇵 starring Sanada, yet again with a samurai sword. Be neat if the invisibility and masked monster look 👺 inspire some yokai and japanese supernatural 👻 genre references.
Prey was very well done I considered it a great predator movie. I was very intrigued to watch it too since it was set in a time where there was not enough technology in that era to go against the predator's advanced weapons so it just made it more interesting on how she'll be able to fight against him.
Dude what advanced weapons, dude have a shield, a disc, spear and a dart gun, it just a cloak. His cloak never got damage despite the hits he took, he's bullet proof at times, he can chop his arm off with feeling pain, and that trap at the end is straight up idiotic logic.
@@WheeledHamster I say advanced for the time of the 1700s basically especially the floating disk and even the cloak. I do agree about how the arrow trap thing REALLY felt too complicated to actually work especially the odds of him hitting it in that direction to go around the trees
I'd say that's kind of the point of the og Predator too, and why I love Prey; Billy Sole buys them time putting up the 2nd best effort 1v1 w a machete, and Arnold wins using guerilla tactics, mud and a tree. Billy gets ignored, tokenized a bit and othered, but his skills prove useful and his instincts correct, and Arnold's tactics are all learned from fighting in Vietnam or improvised based on the Pred's blindspots. The "she got too strong/smart/lucky" critiques of prey miss out on the whole point of Predator imo, humans win (and Aliens break containment) bc they're more capable than Preds give them credit. If a predator landed in pre-agricultural society, it would eventually let it's guard down and a mammoth-dung covered child would eventually drop a boulder on him
7- The Predator is embarrassing 6- Predator 2 is dumb fun 5- AVP is dumb fun 4- AVPR is a gruesome slasher 3- Prey is an incredible sequel 2- Predators is badass 1- Predator is a perfect classic
A few of the content creators I follow have been doing Predator stuff as well, but this is the first time I have watched your channel. It's a really well-made video, quite snappy pacing, well thought out points even though I might not agree with them. Your video is also well edited, using clear and appropriate images to make your points. I have now subscribed and will check your back catalogue. The first 2 movies of the franchise are among my favourite movies of all time.
I would really enjoy if the Predator franchise becomes a collection of Period Pieces with the Predator hunting humans during different time periods. Predator hunting Vikings, Romans, Samurai, Egyptians, etc. the possibilities are near endless. And its an opportunity to fully explore and flesh out these societies in terms of their cultures.
9:10 - what makes Predator 2 even more special today is that its protagonist is black. In this era where the heroes need to have more 'diversity', Predator 2 already broke this barrier way, way back in the 90s by having a black guy fight and beat an alien being! He even beat Will Smith (independence day) to this race!
Wonderful video as always dude. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on the franchise and how you highlighted the solid elements in the decent to not-so-good films. For me, Predator is my number one. It's been my jam since I was like 7 or 8 years old and every time I watch it I still get hyped as hell. Prey is pretty close though, I love the setting, Naru and the Comanche tribe, the beautiful landscape shots, the crazy action and the time it took to build towards the chaos. Next, after that would be Predators, that film was almost perfect, but it just kind of stumbled towards the end with how it handled some of the plot and characters. I need to watch Predator 2 again, I remember it not being as bad as people made it out to be, plus I LOVE Bill Paxton. The rest of the films are kind of irrelevant. Can't wait for your RE session in November.
I agree with your ranking, except I put Prey at 1 and Predator at 2. I've always been like, "Yeah, Predator". However, after watching Prey, I probably watched it 3 days straight. It was so, so good. I absolutely loved it. It's without a doubt, my favorite Predator movie. It should have without a doubt been released in theaters. It deserved a wide release and that was a major misstep by the studio.
I think it’s always better when there’s a singular predator in the movie. If there’s more than one, they get taken out pretty easy and don’t really get to do much.
I’d say this list is spot on. I might swap AVP and P2, but that’s just because I was 14 when AVP came out. I got to go to the movies alone (because no one else wanted to see it) I was so hyped leading up to it, and it pretty much lived up to my 14 year-old standards. Especially the predalien tease! It was the coolest thing ever. Well, it made an impression, deserved or not, that Predator 2 just can’t quite top, but I agree with everything you said.
As a life long PREDATOR fan I though PREY was a much needed breath of fresh air for the franchise, it feels so good to be able to say we have another great Predator film. I really hope they won't do any straight sequels to PREY, keep the anthology feeling with loose connections to other films in the franchise, keep adding more little by little to the Predator lore and go to space and future at some point. I'd rank the franchise like this: 1. PREDATOR (my #1 favorite film ever, more older I grow and look at it with different eyes the more I appreciate it on so many levels, the greatest and perhaps most versatile slasher villain ever and the design is just perfect sharing the top. 1 spot with the Giger Xenomorph) 2. PREY (truly a worthy sequel to PREDATOR, I love that they focused on making the film look great rather than pointless spectacle, I'm still not fully sold on the unmasked look of the feral Predator but I'm sure I'll warm up to it when I get an action figure in my hands and play with) 3. PREDATOR 2 (what a lovely sweaty nightmare, I think it's the most uncomfortable feeling of the films, just dank and nasty I love it and contrasting the concrete jungle with a more tribal looking Predator was a great design choice) 4. PREDATORS (it's a fun ride, good cast, good action, I'm still quite iffy on the super Predator design but hey, all Predators dont need to look too similar from each other, I might warm up more to them if the idea was expanded in some future Predator film) 5. AvP films (they're what they are, not good, only things I like from them are some of the brutal kills in AvPR and the Celtic Predator biomask) 6. the PREDATOR (haven't seen it and most likely never will)
I honestly wanted see what Tarantino would've done with a Predator movie. The Dark Horse comics feel like good Grindhouse flicks and the cheaper budgets, mixed in with gratuitous violence would fit the series very well. At the end of the day, I just want someone to take the reigns of the franchise and actually show it some care. Rodriguez did wonderful with Predators, but didn't branch out far enough from the original. Trachtenberg did phenomenal with Prey, but I don't care to see that story continue. It's time we move away from Earth and away from humans. Let's develop an actual universe with the Yautja.
that just completely kills what makes a monster a monster... it humanizes them more than they already are. is the same reason why fleshing out a michael myers sucks, takes away from what makes them scary.
@@gsuave4293 To be fair, Predator 2 started that, and Dark Horse already established it as a complete lore. Halloween's downfall is because they couldn't figure out what to do with Myers. Same with FT13. At least the Predator franchise still has scares and surprises. Even if we're desensitized to all the violence after all these years.
With the success of Prey, I really hope they get back into the idea of Predator vs Alien again. Instead of going to Earth again, the Yautja goes to a Xenomorph planet (LV-426, first Alien movie) and shows what Yautja culture is like when dealing with the Xenos. It's such an intriguing idea for the Yautja to visit LV-426 it basically writes itself! Why not do it?
26:30 - the more I think about it, the more I actually like that aspect of streaming movies. Maybe if Hollywood and film industries around the globe finally stopped focusing on numbers and stop rating movies like the statistics on the back of a baseball card, it will start to get an increase in higher quality movies and less movies checking boxes made by a committee of business executives
As somebody who has fought competitively, my least favorite trope is the “black widow” trope. i.e a petite smaller persona, typically female, overpowering larger opponents
I mean, I have seen just that happen in real life. Underestimating your opponent just because they are smaller and don't look scary can be a major mistake(which is the big theme of prey)
Yet another brilliant retrospective! That Shane Black roast was hilarious during the ranking, this was a true blast to watch. Can’t wait for ResiDecemeber Evil! This goes without saying but Silvestri’s score and theme for Predator is absolutely phenomenal. Here’s my ranking for the Predator films: 1. Predator 2. Predator 2 (Alan Silvestri returning to compose the score is what ultimately pushes it above Prey and Predators for me, and that iconic lightning shot) 3/4. Prey and Predators (I may have to give both of these a rewatch to determine a definite spot on the list, but for now they go back and forth in the number 3 and 4) 5. AVP 6. The Predator 7. AVPR
-Prime Arnold -John McTeirnan -Concept developed as a joke about the Rocky franchise -Jean Claude Van Dam -Prime Carl Weathers -Stan Winston designs with inspiration from James Cameron -Blend of horror, action, and sci-fi Predator 87 is everything great about the 1980s rolled into a single movie.
I loved the new "Prey" movie and according to some news websites the movie has become the most watched in the streaming services Hulu/Stars+. Aslo when I was a child I visit the area where the first Arnold movie was filmed, it was reay pretty. Waiting for your Resident Evil month!
The original Predator is my favorite movie of all time and I actually like most of the sequels. Here's how I would rank the franchise: 7.) Requiem - 2/10 6.) The Predator - 4/10 5.) Alien vs Predator - 8/10 4.) Predators - 8.5/10 3.) Prey - 9/10 2.) Predator 2 - 9/10 1.) Predator - 10/10
Another great video, Matt! 👍🏽 PREDATOR is my third favourite film of all time; right after RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and before FIRST BLOOD. My ranking: 1. PREDATOR 2. PREDATOR 2 3. PREDATORS The rest I have no interest in. Now, my FAVOURITE film of all time - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly... are you planning to do a video on that classic?
I enjoyed Prey, not as much as either the original or Predators, but it's definitely one of the better movies in the franchise. My list has to be: Predator, Predators, Prey, Predator 2, AVP, AVP: Requiem (I know it is terrible, but I love the creature design for the Predalien and for the Xenomorphs), and The Predator. Great Video as always, Matt!
"it handled indigenous people a lot better than it did with Billy, in the original." Wtf? Billy was an American spec ops commando type, with a native background. How was he supposed to be handled?
I like how you comment on the predator’s messaging in the movie in the 7th minute mark. I don’t really see a lot of 80s horror films care much about saying something, which is fine but it makes a lot of them just mindless entertainment. So it’s nice when a movie tries to be more than that.
Pret was an absolute blast of a film and was a huge step in the right direction for the franchise. It’s basically a complete reversal from the original while it has fun with its new predator. I hold it up as the best since the original. I wouldn’t mind a sequel or continuation in the timeline with this new film.
21:21 I’ve always felt that this knowledge applied to Fugitive and Upgrade’s clan only, and the scientists mistake it for the whole species, not understanding that there are many clans. It's always been something I felt was the explanation, not a retcon, but the scientists mistaking (I call them the hybrid clan) what the hybrid clan does, which is more than likely against Yautija ways, and the clan tried to keep secret, but with Fugitive escaping, it likely exposed them and they’re now dishonored as a whole. Just my two cents honestly.
That lineup of actors at the age they were and the way Predator actually looked awesome and believable. It really is the perfect movie and I watched it religiously between ages 6-14. Also, this is Arnold's best performance I've ever seen. He was Dutch. I watched Predator 2 a lot, I liked it. 1 is the champ, 2 is good, really haven't seen much of the rest tbh. It's like Dumb and Dumber. I want to remember that movie how it was without the sequels damaging my memory
Prey really is the best since the original, planning to watch it for the 3rd time. My favorite is Predators, I saw it with my brother when it came out, we were 12 yo.
“Predator is the 2nd best movie ever behind Evil Dead 2….” And subbed. Why AVP didn’t just follow the comic/novel of Noguchi is the biggest wtf I still can’t process to this day
I first watched predator when it came out on HBO,I was 6 or 6. Scared the shit out of me first viewing but immediately fell in love! So when my young ears heard there were more than 1 Yautja in predator 2 I did backflips. But when Mr Anderson didn't follow the first AvP comic story, which I bought and read when they came out. Well that was when I realized, I grew up and my heart died. Allison Reynolds was right. Yeah, one of the Greatest movies of all time
Prey impressed me. I enjoyed the franchise references. However, the different Era and subtle attempts to incorporate nature threat in the film narrative worked. The nature threat wasn't just from the feral predator, the French trappers, the natural predators and a creative team that had a coherent vision.
Honestly, when I heard about the AvP movie, I thought the U.S Colonial Marines would be involved and be fighting the Aliens and Predator(s) but it was set in 2004... I groaned in agony and saw the abysmal P-13 rating I knew it be ass. At least the video games made that possible and made the Aliens and Predators scary and hard to kill. I'd say one of the best AvP game is from 2010's Aliens vs Predator game by Rebellion. You play as a protagonist from the three species such as Specimen 6 or just Six from the Alien side, The Rookie from the Marines/Human side whom I think could be a descended of Harrigan from Predator 2 and Dark from the Predator's side. I thoroughly enjoyed Prey the cinematography is beautifully shot and seeing this Feral Predator favouring close combat compared it's jungle cousins is a nice change since we have seen pretty much everything about the usual Predators from the movies. The kills that the Feral Predator made are pretty brutal due to it favouring close quarters combat and brute strength. I also love the fact that there are even more subspecies of the Predators! This being from the Desert from its homeworld of Yautja Prime.
I saw prey today. I liked it. I felt it captures the tone of the original. I like how there is tension in the movie and atmosphere in nature. I like the scene where predator kills the snake that ate the mouse that ate a spider. I feel like it’s metaphor for hunter being hunted.
"Predator is the second greatest film of all time after Evil Dead 2 but before Kiki's Delivery Service" needs to be put on a shirt and sold by Christmas.
1. Predator | A non negotiable classic and the best this franchise has to offer 2. Prey | For me, this stands toe to toe with the OG. If this is the direction we're headed we can expect more awesome Pred Movies. 3. Predators | I had a ton of fun watching this in the theatre with the boys. It's pretty much the original just with more Preds/Soldiers. Still enjoy it to this day. 4. Predator 2 | I honestly don't get the hate this movie gets. Is it better or as good as the first? No. Is it fun with a cool new Yautja design, awesome kills and a lot of charm? Yes. 5. AvP:R | Yeah, I know. I like this one. I'm a bad person lol. So but in all seriousness, Wolf and Chet are friggin awesome and I can enjoy the gory kills. Even though I have to up the brightness on my TV whenever I watch this.. 6. AvP | I really liked this movie when I was younger but my love for it has since faded. PG13 (or 16 and up where I'm from) doesn't fit either franchises. 7. The Predator | That retcon, I will never forgive. The whole Autism thing and those gags ruined this movie.

I know I'd get crucified for that opinion. I think people have nostalgia glasses on too much that's why everyone sucks off Predator1&2 even though while good; they're not that great. Prey wasn't perfect by any means. Every movie has it's flaws. However this would be my rankings.
1.Prey/ Predator
2. Predators
3.AVP
4.Predators 2
5. The Predator
6.AVPR
Again this is just my opinion.
@@yoshijb9428 The prey movie was decent at best dude. It doesn't deserve to be put in the same place with the original.
1)Predator
2)Predator 2
3)Avp
4)Prey
5)Predators
I really enjoyed the movie.
He was the dumbest Predator from the whole franchise
My other issue was the cold flower.

Predator is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. It's a classic 80's masterpiece.
Yo homie! Predator 2 also introduced the wrist rocket. Loved the video, btw!👍
You're killing it with these retrospectives. More, please! Halloween? Maybe just a full run at all of Carpenter's films? I'm here for all of it, dude!
Thanks! I've done videos on Halloween 1, 2, and unmade sequels, so I'm covering that series a little differently. There will be more Halloween videos soon!
I love the original predator it’s really awesome and tons of fun
The idea of Royce and Isabelle going back to earth to find its 300 years in the future and meeting space marines and fighting xenomorphs is the coolest shit I've ever heard. I love prey and predators but I need that movie.
I can’t say I was expecting Dark Side of FTR to make a little appearance in this Predator retrospective, but props to ya. May the DMCA gods be kind for this one
EDIT: Just remembered who it was that put Shinsuke Nakamura’s theme in their Millenium-era Godzilla retrospective too.
I accept your top 3 movies of all time rankings my man!
I’m liking the current buzz online for another historical setting, Prey 2: Bushido🇯🇵 starring Sanada, yet again with a samurai sword. Be neat if the invisibility and masked monster look 👺 inspire some yokai and japanese supernatural 👻 genre references.
This! It's cool how the Predators can be used to create these legendary mythology monsters from different cultures.
My list:
1.) Predator
2.) Predator 2
3.) Prey
4.) AVP
5.) Predators
6.) AVP Requiem
7.) The Predator
Predators and AVP are tied to me.
Had to pause this video when Prey came up so that I could watch it before finishing this retrospective. So glad I did, that movie is awesome!
"It honks" is my new favorite way of describing things I really like.
Predator 2 and Predators (2010) are the most underrated movies in this franchise. I'm glad they were made and wouldn't change a thing about them.
If a predator landed in pre-agricultural society, it would eventually let it's guard down and a mammoth-dung covered child would eventually drop a boulder on him
7- The Predator is embarrassing
6- Predator 2 is dumb fun
5- AVP is dumb fun
4- AVPR is a gruesome slasher
3- Prey is an incredible sequel
2- Predators is badass
1- Predator is a perfect classic
👍🍻
A few of the content creators I follow have been doing Predator stuff as well, but this is the first time I have watched your channel. It's a really well-made video, quite snappy pacing, well thought out points even though I might not agree with them. Your video is also well edited, using clear and appropriate images to make your points. I have now subscribed and will check your back catalogue. The first 2 movies of the franchise are among my favourite movies of all time.
Great timing with the new predator comics dropping today
People need to put some respect on Predator 2. It's friggin great
Matt Draper genuinely deserves a million subscribers this level of quality is insane
babe wake up, matt draper uploaded the predator retrospective
I would really enjoy if the Predator franchise becomes a collection of Period Pieces with the Predator hunting humans during different time periods. Predator hunting Vikings, Romans, Samurai, Egyptians, etc. the possibilities are near endless. And its an opportunity to fully explore and flesh out these societies in terms of their cultures.
Knights especially knights and pirates
Might've been the fastest and most satisfying 40 minutes on TH-cam
Thanks for the Predator franchise Matt. Big fan of the franchise. Much ❤
9:10 - what makes Predator 2 even more special today is that its protagonist is black. In this era where the heroes need to have more 'diversity', Predator 2 already broke this barrier way, way back in the 90s by having a black guy fight and beat an alien being! He even beat Will Smith (independence day) to this race!
I was waiting for this! always a delight to see you cover Movies i love!
Is that FTR’s music during the ranking?
Will Prey ever be released to Blu Ray soon? I would like to add it to my personal collection.
Would like predator films set throughout the ages like PREY but with different eras of history like the vikings or Spartans, ninjas etc
I think it’s always better when there’s a singular predator in the movie. If there’s more than one, they get taken out pretty easy and don’t really get to do much.
Ah yes the multiple vs single ninja effect
I'd rank the franchise like this:
1. PREDATOR (my #1 favorite film ever, more older I grow and look at it with different eyes the more I appreciate it on so many levels, the greatest and perhaps most versatile slasher villain ever and the design is just perfect sharing the top. 1 spot with the Giger Xenomorph)
2. PREY (truly a worthy sequel to PREDATOR, I love that they focused on making the film look great rather than pointless spectacle, I'm still not fully sold on the unmasked look of the feral Predator but I'm sure I'll warm up to it when I get an action figure in my hands and play with)
3. PREDATOR 2 (what a lovely sweaty nightmare, I think it's the most uncomfortable feeling of the films, just dank and nasty I love it and contrasting the concrete jungle with a more tribal looking Predator was a great design choice)
4. PREDATORS (it's a fun ride, good cast, good action, I'm still quite iffy on the super Predator design but hey, all Predators dont need to look too similar from each other, I might warm up more to them if the idea was expanded in some future Predator film)
5. AvP films (they're what they are, not good, only things I like from them are some of the brutal kills in AvPR and the Celtic Predator biomask)
6. the PREDATOR (haven't seen it and most likely never will)
I honestly wanted see what Tarantino would've done with a Predator movie.
AvP is interesting. People really either love it or hate it. I loved it, but my friends are pretty split, and most reviewers I've seen are also split.
AVP is my gfs favorite movie lol but I think it had alot more they could have done.
Alien vs Predator gave the predator a shuriken which to this day remains my favorite predator weapon
Why not do it?
i just want a movie where the predator wins
26:30 - the more I think about it, the more I actually like that aspect of streaming movies. Maybe if Hollywood and film industries around the globe finally stopped focusing on numbers and stop rating movies like the statistics on the back of a baseball card, it will start to get an increase in higher quality movies and less movies checking boxes made by a committee of business executives
I love predators it’s such a great movie and super badass and tons of fun.
After watching Prey, I can definitely say it's easily in my top 3 for the year. It can be number one but it's neck and neck with The Batman
I Gotta see that Movie.
I’m hesitant to watch either movie, everyone of my friends who’s seen em told me to save my money.
Good job man! I'm totally agree with your classific.
Prey was such a breath of fresh air in this franchise.
This my favourite video of yours so far, gotta keep the predator love going!
Thanks!
That's the best top three films I've heard in some time!
Yet another brilliant retrospective! That Shane Black roast was hilarious during the ranking, this was a true blast to watch. Can’t wait for ResiDecemeber Evil! This goes without saying but Silvestri’s score and theme for Predator is absolutely phenomenal. Here’s my ranking for the Predator films:
1. Predator
2. Predator 2 (Alan Silvestri returning to compose the score is what ultimately pushes it above Prey and Predators for me, and that iconic lightning shot)
3/4. Prey and Predators (I may have to give both of these a rewatch to determine a definite spot on the list, but for now they go back and forth in the number 3 and 4)
5. AVP
6. The Predator
7. AVPR
Predator, P2, Predators, Prey, AVP
-Prime Arnold
-John McTeirnan
-Concept developed as a joke about the Rocky franchise
-Jean Claude Van Dam
-Prime Carl Weathers
-Stan Winston designs with inspiration from James Cameron
-Blend of horror, action, and sci-fi
Predator 87 is everything great about the 1980s rolled into a single movie.
I loved the new "Prey" movie and according to some news websites the movie has become the most watched in the streaming services Hulu/Stars+.
Aslo when I was a child I visit the area where the first Arnold movie was filmed, it was reay pretty.
Waiting for your Resident Evil month!
Ive enjoyed prey a little more than I thought i would rewatch made md love it more and genuineley brought a new level of fear of the predators
The original Predator is my favorite movie of all time and I actually like most of the sequels. Here's how I would rank the franchise:
7.) Requiem - 2/10
6.) The Predator - 4/10
5.) Alien vs Predator - 8/10
4.) Predators - 8.5/10
3.) Prey - 9/10
2.) Predator 2 - 9/10
1.) Predator - 10/10
Another great video, Matt! 👍🏽 PREDATOR is my third favourite film of all time; right after RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and before FIRST BLOOD. My ranking:
1. PREDATOR
2. PREDATOR 2
3. PREDATORS
The rest I have no interest in. Now, my FAVOURITE film of all time - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly... are you planning to do a video on that classic?
The Good The Bad and The Ugly is my favorite movie. I'd love to talk about it but it's a little daunting.
I enjoyed Prey, not as much as either the original or Predators, but it's definitely one of the better movies in the franchise. My list has to be:
Predator, Predators, Prey, Predator 2, AVP, AVP: Requiem (I know it is terrible, but I love the creature design for the Predalien and for the Xenomorphs), and The Predator.
Great Video as always, Matt!
"it handled indigenous people a lot better than it did with Billy, in the original."
Wtf? Billy was an American spec ops commando type, with a native background. How was he supposed to be handled?
Walton Goggins's "Die, space [...]!" never fails to make me laugh, I know it's terrible and stupid but Goggins sells it so hard
Glad you talked about some of the comics.
ANOTHER 40 MINUTE MATT DRAPER LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO
Was that FTR's theme music at the end of the video? Cool.
I like how you comment on the predator’s messaging in the movie in the 7th minute mark. I don’t really see a lot of 80s horror films care much about saying something, which is fine but it makes a lot of them just mindless entertainment. So it’s nice when a movie tries to be more than that.
I loved that you used FTR'S entrance music.
TOP GUYS
Excellent retrospective my favorite predator films are predator 1 prey and predators
Prey looks so good! Also can't wait for that Resident Evil month
Fave kill in Prey has to be that decapitation with the shield.
Prey got me to rewatch all the movies and it’s easily the second best movie in the series after the first one. But I mean cocain Scorpion is hilarious
Great video - new sub here. This was a fantastic production. You even saw us off with some sweet saxophone 🎷 nice
“Predator is the 2nd best movie ever behind Evil Dead 2….” And subbed.
Why AVP didn’t just follow the comic/novel of Noguchi is the biggest wtf I still can’t process to this day
Wow. You had the editing right.
"No, the worst part of The Predator was..."
-cut to a scene with Olivia Munn.
Thanks Matt!
36:45 That one comic has been on hold for years now
I first watched predator when it came out on HBO,I was 6 or 6.
I have a question:
If you want to show the Predator series to someone who hasn't seen any of them, which order would you watch them in?
About 11 minutes in I realized how well done and edited this video is. Why doesn't it have more views?
Great retrospective
The very first one is masterpiece repeat value
"Predator is the second greatest film of all time after Evil Dead 2 but before Kiki's Delivery Service" needs to be put on a shirt and sold by Christmas.
Dutch was the best only person to fight predator hand to 🤚
I wouldn't mind you covering the 'Lethal Weapon' franchise.
If only we could have a decent robo cop vs terminator vs predator movie 🍿
1. Predator | A non negotiable classic and the best this franchise has to offer
