Creating makeup effects for “Freddy’s Dead” is one of my favorite memories from the early 1990s. I was mostly doing injury appliances, including the Carlos scene effects, and I was lucky to work with Robert Englund a little bit when Freddy got stabbed, etc. He is extremely talented and talks a mile a minute - full of stories, he is. 🙂

Do you mean the ending bit where Maggie stabbed Freddy? If so, where was that scene filmed, the finale? Was it filmed in the Lacy Street studios? Also, were the boiler room scenes done mostly on an impressive soundstage, or a real factory? Thanks!

I thought a lot of moments in Stranger Things Season 4 felt lifted right out of the Nightmare on Elm St franchise. There were several scenes and even shots that felt just like an Elm St film. Vecna himself reminded me of Freddy Kruger in a lot of ways, too, like attacking people in their "dreams."

I actually like Robert Englund’s idea for a reboot/sequel where it’s set years later and most people have forgotten Freddy. Then they start dreaming about an entity and it’s Freddy in a different form. Still a lot of similarities but some changes here and there. Would probably be a good way to pass the torch to a new embodiment of Freddy, since Englund can’t really continue a new franchise at his age and they need someone else to fill the shoes.
You could even have a sequence where Englund shows up as the old Freddy to pass on his personification to a new entity OR channel some of that New Nightmare entity rationale where the entity leaves Englunds Freddy and reincarnates into a slightly different form. Probably not drastically different from Freddy but a reinterpretation like the Joker has been successful in accomplishing with multiple interpretations.
Whoever does end up executing a reboot/sequel/re-quel, I will miss Wes’ vision and sensibilities. He truly understood his version of Freddy and I think we all love his vision. No doubt a new director will have new ideas and interpretations which hopefully will be great and pay some respects 🙌

@@Mitcheck315 TLDR: Yup. I wish they would reboot the series starting from where Nightmare 3 Dream Warriors ends. With 80's synth and butt rock. The new one was ruined by misunderstanding the character and making Freddy an actual Pedo kills the character. (Sorry this got so long. Blame my new ADHD medicine I am adjusting to)
The way he played Freddy wasn't even that bad. It's just the movie didn't really portray Freddy as an actual Menace. He was just some ugly burnt-up thing that could kill you in your dreams. I dunno the movie tried too hard to be a mystery instead of just being a Nightmare Remake. No one needed the plot contrivances. Trying to make us think Freddy was innocent until making Freddy into the worst of all kinds of monster. That's the thing too. Killing kids is horrible. But doing things to them and killing them is beyond the ability to be redeemed. With the original Freddy only killing kids in stories told about him it makes him the type of killer where you can enjoy the character and even cheer him on! It's fictional murder of Kids we never actually see. But the new one... He doesn't just kill the kids. What he does in that remake, makes him irredeemable. As horrible as that sounds. You can cheer for a monster that kills kids, but not one that SA's them before he kills them. Or maybe that's just me. That's kind of the thing about Freddy movies. You kind of cheer him on. Anyway, a lot about the remake was just handled wrong. It sucks how they tried to make it too serious. They really missed the point of Freddy and while Jackie's portrayal didn't seem very dynamic, it wasn't bad. I imagine 100% of the fault is on the Director, Producers, and the Studio. Oh well. Freddy is a monster that is more fun to cheer on while hoping the stars can get the upper hand. And it's ok to root for the old Freddy... In the movies, he doesn't actually kill little kids, er on screen anyway. He kills teenagers. Everyone Hates Teenagers. Jk.

In “WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE,” an ancient evil demonic being in the movie that took the form of the darkest creation of humanity’s imagination of the era that was conceived and in whatever story that was locked in.
In 1994, the Entity chose to take the form of Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. It was also explicitly stated that it isn’t actually Freddy Krueger and that take on other forms before ever taking on the form of Freddy Krueger.
After being set free with the death of Freddy Krueger in “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare,” he took on a different Freddy Krueger form that was actually considerably different than the Freddy of the film series and went on a killing spree by killing the people involved with making the first six Elm Street films, while also stalking and terrorizing Heather Langenkamp Porter (a semi-fictionalized of Heather Langenkamp), invading and influencing Wes Craven himself into writing a script for a new ANOES film and haunting Heather’s son, Dylan Porter.

Charles Bernstein's score for the first film deserves a shoutout. The music really added a lot to the atmosphere of the original film and provided Freddy with a memorable and eerie theme. As for ranking the films, this would be my list:

    2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
    3. New Nightmare
    4. Dream Master

I agree with that list except for the placement of the Remake. I think it should go as the very last one. Freddy's Dead Is the more joyable watch, even though it's a horrible movie. The remake it just seemed like they didn't really understand the character. Plus when you make something a full-fledged pedo it makes it impossible to root for the character. and Personally, I would really like to see them reboot the series only pick up right where Dream Warriors left off. Get someone who sounds similar to Robert Englund and make them look just like Freddy from Dream Warriors. Bring back the Bernstein 80's synth style sound design. Make it about the Dream Warriors all grown up with their own children. Have Kincaid's daughter start having nightmares. Then one day making some cereal she's humming Freddy's Nursery Rhyme and he overhears it. He's all like "ayo whaddafak you just say" She's like oh just a dumb nursery rhyme from my dream I didn't even hear the first two parts of the song. Just Five Six grab your crucifix Seven Eight. Better Stay up Late. He tells her don't sing that. Ever! Then he calls Kristin up and they go about trying to find out if Freddy is really back or not. Once they find out he is back they try to prepare their kids for how to use their powers if they have any... In their dreams. You know try to give their kids the best chance at surviving. While also trying to figure out how he came back and how to stop him for real. Or you could have Kristin's daughter get injured or something and get put in a coma. Kristin after waiting a few days to see if her daughter will wake up tries to use her dream powers to either bring her daughter into her dream or to get into her daughter's dream. You could either have it where the act of using her powers to communicate with her daughter in the coma somehow causes Freddy to be able to haunt her daughter's dreams, and he manipulates her into pulling her friends into her coma because she has similar powers to her mom in dreams. I think that's actually a pretty neat concept but you would have to make Freddy less serious than the Remake did but more serious than the later movies. Basically, Freddy from Pt 1 and 3 blended together. Ooops. Sorry, this was so long. I'm a Freddy fan.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise is sort of the father of 'Scream' and IT and Stranger Things and a forgotten gem at this point. It is similar to Scream with the witty humour and in the part where each installment is interesting if not consistent for horror standards, and they do form a very coherent story. The visuals especially in the sequels really got into the arthouse horror category that's why my personal favourites are 3, 4, and 5 (the latter two are criminally underrated and deserves another look). The soundtrack, visuals and imageries are so nightmarish and fantastical they are not just horrors, they are arts.
    My ranking:
    4, 3, 1, New Nightmare, 5, FvJ, 2, Remake, Freddy's Dead

I was not expecting the Nightmare on Elm Street video game to get name dropped. Major points for that one! These retrospectives continue to be incredibly well put together. Awesome job, Mateo!
It’s definitely time for Freddy to make a return that lives up to his stature as one of the major icons in horror. I can’t imagine anyone that’s not Englund playing him. Hopefully they make a reboot soon enough that he gets to play the character one last time. When I heard Jackie Earl Haley was going to play Freddy in that reboot. I thought there was no way that movie could suck. But here we are.

Really liked this video Matt. The first movie has been with me since I was a kid and though I am not a big horror fan but there is something inescapable about Freddy. That concept about a killer in a striped sweater that attacks in your dreams is haunting plus a live a few blocks away from an Elm Street sooooo, yeah. Wes Craven cemented himself in my mind as a horror master, which makes no surprise I liked the first nightmare, New Nightmare and dream warriors. It is a shame this franchise petered out the way it did but I appreciate what we got. PS Nancy is the best final girl in these movies, hands down.
Really looking forward to the Predator retrospective. Predator is another franchise with fond horrific memories. Between Arnold in the jungle and Danny Glover in LA, you get an interesting killer in polar opposite contexts and I dig it.

I’ve been rewatching the series this past week. Two is just unwatchable to me. Three and four are my favorites (four was the first one I saw in the theater). Started watching Dream Child last night for the first since probably the 90s. What I didn’t expect was a small scene to hit me emotionally like a freight train. It was after the death of Dan and several days later, Alice is alone in the kitchen preparing dinner and just weeping. That hit me like a ton of bricks because I’m going through the same. I lost my fiancée last summer. She was the horror fan, I was just a Freddy fan. But I’ve been watching a lot of horror stuff as a way of staying connected to her. But that was too much. Had to stop it and put on Star Trek.

Matt, your insight and excellent breakdowns are really succinct and perfectly applied in your retrospective, here. Our "top 3's" may differ by +1 or -1 (depending on the film; I honestly put "New Nightmare" at my number 1 and "Dream Warriors" as my number 2) but you make such great cases with such excellent reasoning that I find myself shifting my opinions a little. The best critics and reviewers do this: making me respectfully re-examine my previous positions. Amazing video, my good sir! To be fair the version of Freddy in Dead by Daylight is the Jackie Earl Haley version of the character since Behaviour Interactive, the producers of the game, couldn't get the rights of the original films from the Wes Craven estate. The only way they could get Freddy in the game was to use the WB / Platinum Dunes version. The game also features Kyle Gallner's Quentin Smith character from the 2010 movie as well as the survivor.

I think the best way to go about it especially if Robert Englund cannot continue to do the character much longer, would be to have Freddy locate a child that got away from him who is now an adult and is starting to have fantasies about murdering children and in his nightmares Freddy meets him and starts to groom and train the person into a nightmare killer and at some point for Freddy's last showing, Freddy would kill the new nightmare stalker, possibly bc law is coming down in him, to give him that final power too hunt and kill victims in dreams.

Dream Warriors is not that good....I cannot stand how highly overrated that movie is. its also something to instantly point to when people cry about how much better practical effects are compared to CGI. There is ALOT of stuff in that movie that has not aged well and does not look good anymore.
It was also the death of the franchise when we started nosediving straight into Freddy the standup comic....Freddy the standup comedian is god awful IMO, he is a hell of alot better in Nightmare 1+2 and New Nightmare.
