Both the M100 and M200 are perhaps the most criticised cameras in the photography industry. They are variously described as "beginner", or "entry level" cameras, yet they can produce as good image quality as a £3000 APS-C camera, because the sensor size and type is EXACTLY the same. They are also capable of housing quality lenses, so the quality playing field is exactly similar. Moreover, just because there are no control dials does not mean the M100/200 lack control. They have EXACTLY the same manual controls as any other camera, but they are in the LCD screen options. There is too much snobbery in the camera industry. If you are a talented shooter, almost ANY camera with a decent lens and sensor will take great photographs.

I was starting to get a little discouraged when I was hearing those other reviews but after this video I feel much better about purchasing this camera.

Great review. I wanted to leave a quick comment, which is that the Dual Pixel Autofocus doesn't actually really change the loudness of the focusing, that is largely on the build of the lens. (Though I am super glad you mentioned it as this is the kit lens that comes with nearly all M series cameras.) What the dual pixel will help with is reducing focus hunting as it makes the focus acquisition faster and aids it in adjusting it more accurately. (Focus hunting being the focus point moving back and forth a bunch before locking in or kind of "stepping" to the point in increments rather than fluidly.) So I just wanted to mention that, as if you changed the lens the noise could become a factor, it depends on the lenses focusing motor. But again great job! Considering this for an overhead camera.
Nice review, I've seen this camera get some bad reviews from photographers that just don't get that it's for a particular purpose (vloggers and creators). Also Canon just released the EOS Webcam Utility Beta which lets you use the M200 as a webcam, so you don't need a capture card for streaming!
@@TimetoTalkwithYevgen If you want the highest quality you'll need an HDMI cable and a capture card. Otherwise you can use a micro USB 2.0 cable with the Canon EOS Webcam Utility.
90 percent of the reviews I see say this overheats extremely quickly and shuts off when streaming. I really wanted to get this camera but I’m kind of weary now. Really don’t want to spend nearly 600 bucks for it to not be able to stream (I plan on streaming for 2-3 hours).
It will stream without overheating its mainly recording that seems to be the issue. Make sure you go to the camera's movie mode settings and turn clean hdmi on. Also get a dummy battery, I'd suggest the eos utility bundle from Canon, because I've heard some horror stories with the cheap ones from Amazon destroying people's cameras.
Hello, thank you for the video! I’ve spoken with their customer service and apparently all Cannon LCDs go to sleep after 30 min (even when the auto-shut-off is “disabled”, even when they’re not recording - and even though the trade tariff that led to the 30 minute record limit to begin with is gone). Does the clean HDMI out ‘stay awake’ past 30 minutes? Or is this camera completely useless for streamers who want to go longer than 30 without awkwardly reaching around the camera. :-) Thanks.
It may display the 'sleep' message on the screen of the camera when you're streaming through HDMI, but it won't affect the feed and the screen should stay awake too whilst streaming.
David Kirk I have the M200 here and you’re right, The clean HDMI signal stays awake (yay) - unfortunately, for unthinkably ridiculous reasons, the M200 (unlike all the M cameras before it) does NOT have a sensor cleaner built-in... and there’s a big piece of dust on mine right out of the box. So it’s going back and I’m switching brands. Way to go, Canon. lol

Hammer Dance I looked up the cam link none in stock or available is there no other way to connect the camera to the laptop ?
@@theirishlegend1145 thankfully canon just released some software that basically allows you to do what the cam link already does. All you need to do is just download the software from their website and connect your camera to your computer with a micro USB
can this stream for longer than 30 minutes and does it work as a webcam when connected with Elgato HD60s and 60s+? i don't have the CamLink. thanks for any clarifications.
Yes make sure you set it on clean hdmi in the camera's movie mode settings.
I just purchased this camera for Streaming, do I need to purchase a dummy battery? Have you experienced any overheating issues as well? & would I only need micro HDMI out straight to my pc since my elgato is built in the pc
does anyone know if you can ad a microphone cable adapter to the M200 please anyone leave me a comment traying to buy a budget camera most of the new camera have mic input in these day but if theres a way a mic addapter can be attach to this camera and get great sound quality with any external microphone will a huge benefit when it comes down to budget and quality . hope to hear from anyone.
Hey! There is NO mic input on this camera.
@@hammerdance Was curious as well. Thanks.
Great review, just purchased because of this video. Do you have a link to your tripod?
is there a microphone for this canon? I can not find it and I bought one with the jack but I have no adapters for the canon
Can you connect the camera via USB and set it up as Videodevice in OBS without the Elgato CamLink?
I actually just tried this for you, and unfortunately you can not :/
@@hammerdance thank you for testing. wasn't sure as all reviews I saw mention that this is a good cam but I can't remember anybody said a CamLink is necessary.
Of course man no problem that’s what I’m here for! So yup so as of right now, it is definitely needed at the moment, maybe that change in the future but it did not work for me.
do they make a camera like this with external mic jack?
what tripod/mount do you use that can fit behind your monitor?
