    Great fishing, sir. Just bought my first Tenkara rod. Great to see an awesome bass and crappie video using Tenkara. We live in Texas so gotta drive a ways for mountain trout.

      Great, hope you enjoy tenkara. A fun way to fish. If you have a long way to the mountains, try searching for "microfishing". Kind of unusual but worth a try!

    Great Tenkara video. Thank you. I’ve just started using this method, and I have a lot to learn.

      You are welcome. I was using a white Marabou "leech" that was lightly weighted with lead wire around the hook shank. Fly sinks slowly and allowed me to work it through the heavy cover without hang ups. Good luck and hope you enjoy Tenkara!

    Put a rod holder on your ice chest....when you start handlining fish in put rod in the holder.....yup .... great video

      Interesting idea. Will think about doing that. On some of the bigger fish, they make another run and I think even with the rod in the holder, I would still be able to manage the fish. Appreciate the insight!

    How much line do you have on that pole?

    • @1bellcurve
      @1bellcurve  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      About 21 ft: 18 ft of main line plus 3 ft or so of 3lb tippet.

    What line combo did you use?

    • @1bellcurve
      @1bellcurve  ปีที่แล้ว

      For the heavier action Diawa rod, I use a 20 lb floro + 10 lb floro line (about 50/50) followed by a 6lb tippet. This setup helps with casting weighted flies and improves accuracy around the brush. For the Zerosum rod, I use a #4.5 level line with a 3lb tippet. The lighter tippet on this setup is to protect the rod if I hook a bigger bass and it breaks me off. Both setups work well for crappie.

    Wow what a great day of fishing. What type of Tenkara rod were you using, what action and what kind of line? What fly patterns did you use? I just got a Tenkara rod and I fish mostly for crappie. Is there a technique or action that is good to learn fishing this way for crappie?

      Thanks Patrick! I used a couple of different rods in this video: Daiwa Expert LT36 (12 ft), Nissin Zerosum 400 6:4 (13ft). Rods are available on TenkaraBum.com (but these are premium Japanese rods so more expensive than most American brands). The fly I used was a fairly simple fly I tie myself. It is essentially a white marabou "leach" pattern with marabou tied on both the top and bottom of the hook (size 8). I also used a #10 brown nymph I also tied. For the lines, I was using a #3 tenkara line (florocarbon) with a 6x (3.5lb) tippet. Line was about 15ft long with 3-4 of tippet. I'm learning tenkara too and found the techniques I was using to be productive. I was fishing primarily in the back-most parts of bays/coves where there was a lot of brush, fallen trees, and shade. I would cast the fly almost directly into these brush piles and "guide" the fly between limbs or raise it to pull the fly up over limbs. When there were some clear areas between limbs/trunks, I would let the fly sink some (being careful not to get hung up). Because the fly was white and highly visible, and the water was very clear, I could really reach into places that I would probably not be able to get to with a jig or float setup and could watch the fly and see the bite. Most of my bites occurred when I let the fly sink into the gaps. Because tenkara rods are so long, you can really keep control over the fly and put it where you want to. I caught about as many bass as crappie and really believe the tenkara allowed me to effectively fish big tangles of brush that are hard to fish in other ways. I don't even think I lost a fly all day which is pretty amazing given that 6x tippet is pretty easy to break. Anyway, hope this helps and give it a try. It takes some adjustment but is effective once you try it.
