His performance was incredible! He managed to make what in all honesty should have been a role of a mustache twirling villain into someone who is diabolical, sophisticated, subtle, and in many ways human. I have no problem believing that he's a fully fleshed out character who while not feeling remorse for his actions isn't just a sadistic psychopath. He sees this as what is necessary to keep order, which happens to be getting what he wants
Seeing Cato, a Career who was trained his whole life for the Games, break down at the end is a really jarring reminder that he's also just a kid and doesn't deserve to be there... His death is the most emotional to me after rue's and it's even worse in the book, where he's being slowly eaten alive by the mutts for hours. Reading that at 12 rlly messes with a person 😭
@@baeksooist While I didn't find his death more emotional than Rue's I do agree that his death hit hard, just in a different way. He was just a kid who had been told his entire life the other district kids were the enemy and then trained to kill them. As he said it was all he knew. When I was in the theater some people cheered when he died and it really saddened me. As much as it is crazy to think of a world where people would watch and bet on kids killing kids for entertainment, hearing those cheering at Cato's death made me realize just how easily we could turn into that kind of society if we aren't careful.
@@Carolinagirl1028 yeah that would sadden me too. Especially since Katniss shooting the arrow was an act of mercy, not murder. That part in the books was brutal
I think the death of the young handicapped boy whose neck Cato snapped in a fit of rage was more emotional to me. Also the reason I don't cry over his death. He volunteered to kill young starving kids who never had any hope to defend themselves.
By now, you know that Haymitch was a victor and victors become mentors. Haymitch won more than 20 years ago, so every year since he’s had to mentor 2 young people pretty much doomed to die. Combine the horror he suffered during the games along with 20+ years of mentoring, and it’s no wonder he’s an alcoholic.
They didn't like him using the forcefield around the arena (sorta as a weapon; been awhile since I read the books, think a Career was throwing a weapon at him while he was next to the forcefield, Haymitch ducked so the weapon would bounce off & killed the Career who threw it?) Anyway, his whole family plus his girlfriend/fiance got killed by the Capitol.
I think the most shocking difference between the book and the movies was, in the book, you were in Katniss' head. All of her thoughts were known. In the movie, this isn't possible, but Jennifer Lawrence does such a good job at conveying so much emotion in her face. It genuinely makes up for some of the information you lose, as opposed to the books. One detail I really wish was included in the movie was the mutts. At the end, they were all generic. In the book, they were psychological torture. The mutts had the eyes and hair color of the other dead tributes and their collars had the number of the district they were from. I really wish they captured this detail in the movie, but regardless, this is still one of my favorite storylines of all time.
29:53 They don't really explain the three finger salute well in the films but it's a gesture used by District 12 residents (typically at a funeral) of admiration, gratitude, and saying goodbye to someone they love 😭😭
I'm probably in the minority about this but I love that the films don't explain everything outright. It forces people who watch the films to pay attention and piece it all together on their own, in their own time. I've seen these films more times than I can count at this point and I'm still noticing things I didn't notice in past viewings because as my world-view changes, so do the things I pick up on when I watch the films and it's all building up over many years and makes this series incredibly deep and well thought out. I've been an avid reader over watcher all of my life but I prefer the films to the books this time. The first-person narration in the films is much better done than the first-person narration in the books, and I love that Katniss wasn't directly talking to the audience the way movies like Twilight and Divergent utilized.
Great reaction! You're the first commenter I've seen predict the double-cross rule change. Most viewers protest "That's not fair!" Like there's anything about the Hunger Games world that is fair.
23:19 - All I can think when I watch the scene where the Gamemakers are attacking her with the fire is how sad Cinna must have been, especially since he got her named "The Girl Who Was On Fire" 🥲
Random thought kind of related to your Olympics comment at 10:17 - Collins has said that the inspiration for The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television, flipping between people competing on a reality show and footage of the invasion of Iraq. The two began to blur in a very unsettling way and the idea for the book was formed. She wanted to continue to explore writing about just-war theory for young audiences, which she uses Gale and Peeta as as two perspectives in the just-war debate. There's an interview in the NTY called "Suzanne Collins Talks About ‘The Hunger Games,’ the Books and the Movies" where she goes into more details
COMPLETELY agree on watching the movies before reading the book! In my opinion there is literally no downside. Since you saw the movies first and liked them enough to read the books, you'll still like them after reading, even if they aren't perfect adaptations. Plus since you already have a general knowledge of the events, you have the ability to pickup on foreshadowing and small details that would only otherwise be accessible through a reread
I worked in Hollywood for 15 years, and “For Your Consideration” is what the watermark used to say that was always printed across the bottom of the screen on all the DVD copies of Oscars movie screeners that were sent out to Academy members. The industry “Hunger Games,” if you will…
@@Zach12384 Oh, I just always wondered if that line, “Thank you for your consideration” was a tongue in cheek nod to those screeners, or maybe it was totally unrelated. I used to get a lot of those screener copies as hand-me-downs during Oscar season, and watched a lot of movies with that phrase plastered to the bottom.
@@BDogg2023 no you might be onto something I can't remember if that line is in the book or not I always found it kinda odd. But now that you mention that it seems pretty spot on since yk the hunger games in its entirely is paralleled with real life
god, idk why i didn't realize this before but when they are about to eat the berries, as they count, Peeta's attention is solely on Katniss. Meanwhile, as Katniss is counting, her attention is solely on the cameras, looking away from Peeta as he fixes her hair... This shows that the berry thing for Peeta was in fact for Katniss, while Katniss' was only for the camera to show up the gamemakers.
Well, "Just to show up the gamemakers" is a bit of an oversimplification. In the books, Katniss does not know they would take it back and allow her and Peeta to live. She was fully prepared to die with him at that moment. Yes, it was an act of defiance but less to "show anyone up" and more out of her compassion (for Peeta) and her survival instinct. Katniss spends almost 90% of the story in a survival state, she reacts to things largely off of her first base instinct because she's just a 16-year-old girl with severe trauma when it comes down to it but she's also just a truly compassionate person as well.
I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland *(RIP)* makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character. Also....RIP Rue. She did not deserve the fate she was given.
10:09 - I also love Cinna 😍 I can't wait for you to read the books to know what Katniss was thinking during this meeting. How they styled Lenny Kravitz as Cinna is exactly how I imagined him in the books
Enjoyed your reaction, first time hunger games reactions are always fun. I think you're really going to enjoy the amount of detail Collins puts in the books. Answers some of your questions and then some.
The "beasts" are even scarier in the books as they explain they're made using the genetics of the fallen contestants and you're able to see their souls and the sadness in their eyes.
Also, my local crisis center has these books in their library and they're about the only good books there so I end up rereading them on the few occasions I've checked myself in there. It gives them a very weird association in my brain now between The Hunger Games and mental breakdowns. 😂
@@kaiielle Yeah the deaths in the books are pretty horrific as well. Fantastic book series though if you like to read, they're somewhat like Harry Potter in how they have some pretty significant bits that are omitted from the movies
@@TheOrthoglyphI know what you mean. I associate the Divergent series, because one time I read the entire trilogy during a "hospital" stay. 😊 Also, I feel like every mental ward I've ever been in has a copy of Forrest Gump and of 28 Days (with Sandra Bullock, not the zombie movie). Usually on VHS. 😅
"You’re not leaving me here alone,” I say. Because if he dies, I’ll never go home, not really. I’ll spend the rest of my life in this arena, trying to think my way out." Katniss after the game makers change the rules and Peeta decides to die. In the book the despair and trauma at the end of the games was horrible. I wished they would have leaned into that a bit more, but I get why they didn’t.
I think they did a really good job of adapting this movie, even if they had to remove a lot of the darker background from the books (and use a lot of shaky cam in this one) to keep the rating low enough for the target audience. Most movie criticisms are caused by the omitting of some book context which honestly is pretty unavoidable when doing adaptions
Wow, no idea you've never seen these. They seem way up your alley. The books are incredible too, the first is very close to the film but (no film spoilers) the second on go way deeper into the politics and disturbing real world parallels that make the series so compelling IMO. One of my favorite series I've read, and it's a pretty easy read, just a few hundred pages each.
I read all three books first, then watched the films as they were released. Amazing work bringing the characters to life on the big screen. One thing I have to say is that going back and watching the films after the recent passing of Donald Sutherland, who played President Snow, makes me a little sad. He was an amazing actor that I have seen in many different films going back to my early childhood in the 70's. Thank you, Donald, for your many roles and the memories that go with them.
I am happy you plan to read the books. The details of the world-building in the books fill in so many gaps left by the movie adaptation and will genuinely make you cry as you read. Don't get me wrong these movies are incredible and I love them but the books are a different level.
I havent heard the books but from what I learned through comments is that Katniss loses part of her hearing (because of the explosion) and Peeta loses his leg.
Every time I see Woody Harrelson on screen as drunk Hamitch, I'm reminded of another role he played in the 90s comedy, Kingpin. I think it's a good watch, so I went ahead and added it via your suggestion form. 🏹
Your premonition of this movie was on point 😂 you predicted so many things correctly. I'm so glad you loved it! This is one of my favourite franchises because of the characters and the world building. In this specific movie my favourite characters are Katniss, Effie, Cinna, and Rue! Favourite moments are Katniss volunteering for Prim, Gale's pep talk "You're stronger than they are. You are. Get to a bow.", Katniss shooting the apple, Rue gesturing for Katniss to release the Tracker Jackers, and Peeta touching Katniss' braid during the berry scene.
"The setting in this world is so messed up...." And yet, one of the freakiest things is that it doesn't seem at all unlike a possible future for our own society. The books in particular left me with a very uneasy feeling that that if we weren't careful, even a country like America could end up something like this - and I say that knowing perfectly well that there are countries in the world who already suffer these types of conditions.
I really liked the books. The books obviously go into greater detail like how two of the richer districts only send volunteers and they are usually the odds on favorites to win every year.
@@AFMountaineer2000 Seems kinda silly to not pool some resources and have 2 kids train every year for an event they know is going to happen... Not even life time training, just a new pair of kids every year who will volunteer (and render the entire point of the Reaping moot). Also, isn't there some system about getting stuff in exchange for your name being in the hat extra times? Sounds like something that is easily exploited by volunteers... At least in Battle Royale the class is chosen at random so no one can game the system.
@@LordVolkov Now that you mention it, if you had people to volunteer every year then everyone could get all the extra food they're allowed because it doesn't matter how many entries they have since there are two volunteers. So you've a really good point there. Broken system and now I won't be able to unthink it. Thanks lol
When you grow up in such a control environment, including spoech, plus an environment of true loss the f word just doesn't come close. That's why they aren't swearing. Nothing is taken for granted not even a word. When true loss happens you don't scream cr@p or b*tch. It's either a primal scream or a deep silence.
I wrote the 4 movies off for a decade. Then, I watched them… a year or so later, I own all 4 on blu ray 😂 I would’ve never thought I would like them that much… and the song from Mockingjay part 1… fuhgeddaboudit! I have the lyrics tattooed in my brain. I even catch myself singing it randomly. Now, with all that said… do I ship my dude card back, or should I just shred it?
Nice reaction. Glad you liked it. The books were written for Scholastic Books by Suzanne Collins who had already written an earlier series for younger students to teach about politics and war - The Overland Chronicles.
omg i was such a hunger games fan girl! so excited to see your reaction! :) in my opinion the best and the worst thing about the movies is that they're mostly for the fans. they're very true to the books and even add more context, but because there's no narration (thank god!) the viewer either has to just know what's going on in her head, or pay attention to every detail and take a lucky guess on the rest. i'm glad you still liked it!
I'm a visual reader too! I have a condition called 'aphantasia' or the inability to visualize things on my own (a mind's eye so to speak). I tried to read the first Harry Potter book and couldn't get past the first page. Once I saw the movie, everything made sense to me. I heard someone describe it as 'the computer is working but the monitor is off.'
The next movie actually just got announced like a month ago! The one that came out a year ago is actually a prequel and the next one is also a prequel but after the last one…. Kind of Star Wars style but it’s different characters
One of these franchises that took me forever to actually watch myself because it was either too hyped up or I didn't like something around it. In this case, I'm just not the biggest fan of Jenniger Lawrence. Also, I had to read the first bookin college, and YA novels were just never my thing, regardless of the genre. But the movies were on TV 2 years ago around Christmas while I was visiting my mom (don't have regular TV at home anyway), and she wanted to see them, so I said ok. I didn't hate them, and because the last one would've been while I was traveling back home, and I hate leaving things undone, I watched reaction videos for the first few movies, so I would know the actors actual voices (on tv the movies were dubbed in German) and the watched the final movie, all in one sitting xD Definitely looking forward to your reactions to these movies tho, it's always cool to see what you notice and take from stories :)
This kind of game is known as a Battle Royale, The term came from it's orginal Source movie "Battle Royale" (2000). It's popular in games like Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone. Definitely check out Battle Royale (2000) When you get a chance for the channel. It's basically the same except it was made in Japan and definitely brutal. The kids in the movie are all in their teens and do a great job. Instead of 24, there's 42 classmates and it concentrates on certain groups with different sub stories between them. The book is just as brutal, but probably even more. Great reaction. :)
I randomly received the first book as a Christmas gift one year shortly after the third book came out from an aunt whom I’d never gotten a Christmas gift from in my life and the next day I read it in one go and immediately looked to see if there were more in the series and went and bought them.
My thought is that peeta asked to train alone so he could tell haymitch he’s in love with katniss and see what haymitch would say to using that to help katniss win and came up with the idea to say it during the interviews
I like to see the movie before I read the book, too. Y'know how everyone always says "the book was better?" Well, I figured if I watched the movie and liked it, wouldn't reading the book then build on the experience (because it's probably better)? And it usually does. Things that are touched on but never expanded, cool stuff that got cut for time, characters that had been removed for irrelevance or because another character could cover that role - instead of being pissed it wasn't in the movie, you get to discover it all when you read the book. It's the way. Except you have to have the discipline to not read the book beforehand, which isn't always easy.
Except: this is a movie reaction so a lot will see it. Makes it a 100% more valuable if the reactor does know the base material and can give an opinion in merit. Instead this (not knowing anything and being working with movies on a social media platform) gives the vibe of ignorance because it’s almost impossible to not know Hunger Games elements on social media over a decade now not to mention that they had a PR campaign (if short as it was) again. Watching this or Dune or Lord of the Rings, etc.. in some reactions, always those were the most liked where the reactor knew what is she/he was watching because they read the books. The movie is for adapt it to the screen and show it, not the other way around. Your opinion how it is done and what is that counts not in the book. It won’t matter. Last time I saw this a guy from 1k subscribers gain 10x more with Hunger Games because he did it with a full commentary on the books. There is that. A girl did a Lord of the Rings reaction with the books including and gain 500k views in 2 weeks. The Tolkien fans appreciated her effort. That’s reality.
@@kaiielle what stopped you? (Not just directly from reading now - and that’s not a big achievement in this case because it’s a very easy read being a YA book, but in the last decade moreover after the new movie/ book.) Nobody forced you to put out this particular movie at once after leaving out for a decade. Not to mention you could use it for an opportunity to create a book club and read it with your patreon/whoever wants to join. That’s the thing about books.
I simply prioritized (and still am) reading other books and other series. It feels like you're expecting a lot more of me than I have provided and I have no idea why.
I feel like this is the first time it really struck me that when they explain the games they refer to the tributes as a Man and a Woman from each district. It just makes it such a stark contrast when they then pull Prim’s name and she so clearly a child. You could forget a little bit that the older tributes are children but by no stretch of the imagination can you call Rue or Prim a woman at this time.
Snow needed her to survive. Like he says, too much hope is dangerous. For the first time she had shown something different in the games, that they can be better and it sparked something. Snow needed to bring her back down, if they ended with her having to take out her love it would shows she is no better and still ended the same. It's all about control. She sparked something that damaged that, and then messed up the attempt to fix that which then solidified the damage she had already done. It's why they are so angry as Haymitch mentioned, and why the gamemaker was in so much trouble that he was forced to eat poison.
Read the books the same year the first movie came out (wasn't really aware that it was a big thing until the movies came out). The first movie was good but quite visually underwhelming when compared to the first book. But they have a smaller budget for this one, so I can't blame them. They did their best with what they had.
I've come to think of The Hunger Games as live action Fortnight. I do wonder what, if any, impact Hunger Games had on the explosion in popularity of the battle royale genre in gaming, which came right on the heels of these movies. While there were obviously other films that had influence (the titular battle royale in particular), they were no where near as big globally as The Hunger Games.
I also was NOT a fan of the camera work, so much so that I hated the movie the first time I watched it. I can enjoy it more now, but am so thankful they abandoned the shakey cam for the remainder of the franchise.
when you get to X-Men Days of Future Past makebsure you watch the extended cut callee "The Rogue Cut". Same goes with The Wolverine that you would watch before it, that extended edition is valled like The Uncaged Unleashed or something? Both films extended versions are what should be watched 😊😊
She lost her sister in one way or another in every movie, first she couldn’t save Rue the personification of what could have become of Prim if Katness didn’t volunteer. In the second movie she couldn’t save Prims home, everything and everyone prim had even known burned away by the war Katness didn’t even want to be a part of. And then finally in the last two we see prim fully lose any semblance of naivety or innocence, lost when she has to be the one taking care of the wounded and a hijacked Peeta fully seeing what war can do to a person and being on the “front lines” of trying to remedy this and finally in the last she looses her sister fully. The whole reason any of this started in the first place, she saved her sister to only lose her in a greater battle yet to come. She didn’t loose her to the black and white war that Snow had been playing all along but in the “Gray” parts in between. Prim was never going to live and Katness couldn’t do anything to stop it she either would die in the first games or how she did in the last. I think that’s one of the main point of the series. In war the very thing you are trying to protect often becomes what you truly loose and the real world implications of this “ innocence lost” theme is astounding to see in this form of media that so readily applies to modern thought.
You were a little clothes when you said it's the only television show on the capital actually was so generous in essentially putting a large television free of charge in every citizen's home whether they're a district or Capital citizen and they have remote control over it so during the games that TV will be on the volume will be loud and you cannot change the channel I turn it off... There's also a sensor so if it seems as if people are in the home but not sitting in front of the screen and facing it they can actually be punished so even parents whose children are forced to be in the game cannot avoid watching it. The entire country is actually based of a lot of American racial history intention. Ruse district is where the southeastern United States would be Louisiana Alabama florida, it has the largest population of black people and has the largest population of peacekeepers in comparison to people, it also has peacekeepers with the most diabolical behavior and the most infractions for brutality (which holy crap if you're a police officer and a dystopian fiction sci-fi novel what exactly do you have to do to be considered being too brutal...). The district also predominantly produces various grains and fruits and vegetables such as you would have found on a plantation. Candice's district is of course in and around the rust belt and that area is even now one of the poorest areas in all of America. The district that handles transportation in the building of cars and trains at the Capitol uses that is in the central Northern us and that area has an incredibly high epidemic for being morphling addicted, (morphling being the obvious tongue in cheek iteration of morphine). So in other words you have an area of the country that has to deal with creating motor vehicles that has a random drug problems so that one's pretty clearly meant to be similar to Detroit. District 3 the district that makes computer parts is silicon valley. Is within the Rocky mountains which is partially for logistics and strategic reasons put that location is also important because it explains what shows you the symbolism as to why the capital is there and why the citizens are the way they are. The capitalists where we have today essentially the highest concentration of Mormons in the entire country. Mormons tend to be overwhelmingly white tend to have a lot of poorly veiled racism in bigotry along with sexism and they tend to be financially in a much better situation than the rest of America. Also their behavior and their clothing while in real life is obviously not at all close to what the people in the capital where in the movies however if you stop and consider things like the weird magical underwear Mormons have to wear before marriage that does seem like something the capital would do for noticeable reason. But they're also comparable to Mormons in the sense that a large majority of the rest of the population of the districts look at them like they are some sort of weird cult or just completely out of touch considering the fact that they're happily watching a battle royale death pageant with children and yet they're totally okay and laughing and having fun with it. Similar to Joseph young with Mormons and nothing is really going to shake that devotion. The last primary comparison there is the fact that the way the capital citizens tend to treat district citizens or even just talk about them is incredibly similarto the way that white affluent people would talk about Mandingo fighters from antebellum to postbellum. Meaning of fighters of Christ is being slaves that were chosen because they happen to have substantial athletic or fighting prowess and were forced to fight often to the death or to disfigurement and dismemberment for the entertainment of white owners. And back during pre-civil war era America, often the same white folks you would watch Mandingo fights if not directly participate in the owning and trading of them they would justify if nothing else they're watching and enjoying the matches because they did not think of them as quite entirely human.. in other words any empathy they may have naturally felt (because even with them being a slave forcing them to fight each other potentially to the death or to be a horrific pain or useless as a slave and therefore likely to be killed or worse), to be able to watch and enjoy the social interaction that came with these types of matches and fights it was major entertainment for them. But their method of false equivalency or justification was that slaves at the time weren't really quite all the way human they are closer to being animalistic and as such they don't really have a problem fighting and killing each other for no reason. Which is honestly a laugh because that implies that slave owners only ever engaged in violent activity especially towards slaves when it was absolutely necessary which we all know was not the case they were happy to be sadistic bastards all the time. Regardless it's a lot easier watching a death match if you convince yourself that the individuals in the death match barely have the brain power beyond that of are you smarter than average hunting dog. It's an easy way to dehumanize the fighters and therefore get more enjoyment out of the grotesque activity they're using as entertainment. BCD exact same thing in the capital and that's why the capital is okay with watching these children fight they don't fully think of them as intellectually or emotionally developed to be considered on the same level. In fact because of propaganda after all this time many of the adults in the capital actively believe that the parents in the district not only don't get sad when their children are reaped (which tbf that is true for district 1 2 and 4). But they believe that district citizens are nothing but savages who don't at all care despite that their child will likely die in this game, and because they don't seem to be fighting against their children being in the games or being reaped (which no shit if they did do anything to try to resist their children's participation then they would be arrested tortured and likely executed)) in other words Capital citizens don't think that district parents think about their children as anything other than potential meal and wealth tickets. Even with them disrupting the natural order of the game by having two winners there's no way the capital of this point can allow the games to stop for the next year just because they were issues with the prior year simply because the games are a massive and integral part of the capitals economy. The money they make do everything from ratings to merchandise and more than anything else bet's n wagers. Aspect of it so no they're definitely not going anywhere by choice. Foxface the girl following Peeta was actually from a district that is incredibly crowded and over industrialized it's not uncommon for district children there or even adults to in their entire lifetime only seen a few bleeds of grass let alone an entire tree. She was doing whatever she had to to learn and memorize as much about herbology botany zoology and homeopathic medicine and she possibly could. She easily could have not realized that those berries were deadly and she was essentially having peeta and katniss taste test everything for her without them realizing it.
Also one thing that I always consider is that at some point we root for Cato to die because hes "the bad one", and we want to see him die as entertainment just as the Capitol watches the games as entertainment. Every district is in that fucked up situation, yes some of them are more privileged but its like.... While we are busy fighting each other, the higher ups are calling the shots.
All of the movies are very good, but I wish they had kept the first director. I think at this point 10 years later, the way "revolution" ends up being glamorized in this film set is a mistake. On Tiktok and stuff you can see "political" creators talking about revolution all the time and it's so ridiculously out of touch. The first director accurately captures how violent and gritty reality is. Every character is portrayed in so many grays instead of just good or bad, they're complicated and gross because they're forced to be gross. Later on, it's all almost glamorized which is exactly what the author who wrote these books was warning against. No one wins in any of this.
I love the books and i do enjoy the movies but i will always HATE how...cheap? this movie looks 😭 idk like the cornucopia and the weapons just seem plasticy? I get the design philosophy but I do think it falters. Also heads up before you read the books, they are WAY darker. Just keep that in mind if that can be a problem for you!
@@gailseatonhumbert Yeah, totally different - An equal number of boys and girls are trapped in a shrinking zone expected to kill each other until only 1 survivor remains, while being televised for political purposes. And the survivors of the first movie do a revolution later. Which am I talking about?
After seeing the 2nd movie in the theater, I refused to wait a year to find out what happened next. So I read the 3rd book. I much preferred the movies. Book Katniss was a bit annoying...
the deeper you get into the series the more it starts to reflect israel’s occupation and genocide on palestine. it’s hard for me to watch this series now a days
Uhg, The casting in the movie was so bad. Total white washing of pretty much all of them. Peta should be larger, taller and Katniss was supposed to be smallish and Olive Skinned.

Rest in peace President Snow, Donald Sutherland. He gave us one hell of a performance in these movies.

I really loved that the movie added this part. Made him more humane
@@Carolinagirl1028 we kinda already are this type of society
I think the death of the young handicapped boy whose neck Cato snapped in a fit of rage was more emotional to me. Also the reason I don't cry over his death. He volunteered to kill young starving kids who never had any hope to defend themselves.
8:50 - my friend quoted "That is mahogany" for like a year after this movie was released. Her last name/nickname was Wood so it was fitting 🤣
peeta tapping on catos hand will forever be my favorite part
By now, you know that Haymitch was a victor and victors become mentors. Haymitch won more than 20 years ago, so every year since he’s had to mentor 2 young people pretty much doomed to die. Combine the horror he suffered during the games along with 20+ years of mentoring, and it’s no wonder he’s an alcoholic.
Yeah.. and it makes sense why he doesn't seem to get attached.
If I remember correctly, the capital had his whole family unalived too. They didn't like how he won the game?
@@connie2558 and his girlfriend
They didn't like him using the forcefield around the arena (sorta as a weapon; been awhile since I read the books, think a Career was throwing a weapon at him while he was next to the forcefield, Haymitch ducked so the weapon would bounce off & killed the Career who threw it?)
Anyway, his whole family plus his girlfriend/fiance got killed by the Capitol.
@@iuile oh I completely agree with you there. Its a different medium so the details that come across are different
Great reaction! You're the first commenter I've seen predict the double-cross rule change. Most viewers protest "That's not fair!" Like there's anything about the Hunger Games world that is fair.
Thanks! I figured that they could change anything that they want to considering they can spawn creatures to chase after them and such.
Effie Trinket in this movie is if "Learn to read the room" was a person.
Elizabeth Banks makes her so funny. Effie is my favorite character 😅
@@TheYakusoku is dumb as a box of hair if she was in this movie the girl had some major growth throughout the series!
14:51 - Haymitch's thumbs up was my favourite book to movie change 😂
I worked in Hollywood for 15 years, and “For Your Consideration” is what the watermark used to say that was always printed across the bottom of the screen on all the DVD copies of Oscars movie screeners that were sent out to Academy members. The industry “Hunger Games,” if you will…
Explain in pop terms
@@Zach12384 Oh, I just always wondered if that line, “Thank you for your consideration” was a tongue in cheek nod to those screeners, or maybe it was totally unrelated. I used to get a lot of those screener copies as hand-me-downs during Oscar season, and watched a lot of movies with that phrase plastered to the bottom.
@@BDogg2023 no you might be onto something I can't remember if that line is in the book or not I always found it kinda odd. But now that you mention that it seems pretty spot on since yk the hunger games in its entirely is paralleled with real life
@@BDogg2023 I think it's a general talent show/award nominee thing rather than specific to those screeners, but that's definitely what it's going for
Notice that the people of the Captial bear a striking resemblence to the liberals of today. A bit of hollywood foreshadowing, perhaps.
god, idk why i didn't realize this before but when they are about to eat the berries, as they count, Peeta's attention is solely on Katniss.
I love how witty she is in the books.
20:54 yes, even the districts have to watch the hunger games. It’s mandatory viewing for everybody in Panem :(
My favorite line. "That is Mahagony!"
Oh gosh, crazy!
Also, I feel like every mental ward I've ever been in has a copy of Forrest Gump and of 28 Days (with Sandra Bullock, not the zombie movie). Usually on VHS. 😅
@@inspectre27 Yeah 28 Days is a staple. It's also not great. I'd prefer 28 Days Later even, but that might be a bit too much there. 🤣
"You’re not leaving me here alone,” I say. Because if he dies, I’ll never go home, not really. I’ll spend the rest of my life in this arena, trying to think my way out."
Katniss after the game makers change the rules and Peeta decides to die.
17:53 - I like the little mention of the showers since we aren't shown them in the movie like we are in the book!
Every time I see Woody Harrelson on screen as drunk Hamitch, I'm reminded of another role he played in the 90s comedy, Kingpin. I think it's a good watch, so I went ahead and added it via your suggestion form. 🏹
Kingpin is such a great movie!
That was a long way to go to recommend Kingpin. I've never looked at Hamitch and thought about Kingpin.
Showing my age here, but I can't NOT see Woody from Cheers whenever I see him.
Woody plays a has-been exceptionally well. I get big Munson vibes off of Haymitch.
When I first heard he was playing Hamich, Roy Munson is exactly who popped into my head and I thought, "perfect".
18:34 - Katniss' reaction to Peeta saying he likes her is too good. So over the top but iconic 🤣
"The setting in this world is so messed up...."
And yet, one of the freakiest things is that it doesn't seem at all unlike a possible future for our own society. The books in particular left me with a very uneasy feeling that that if we weren't careful, even a country like America could end up something like this - and I say that knowing perfectly well that there are countries in the world who already suffer these types of conditions.
Its hard to recognize Lenny Kravitz when he's not wearing a giant pair of sunglasses.
I really liked the books. The books obviously go into greater detail like how two of the richer districts only send volunteers and they are usually the odds on favorites to win every year.
But no other districts think to train volunteers...
@@LordVolkov because the other districts everyone works to live. The richer districts can afford to have their children do nothing but train
Thanks lol
@@TheOrthoglyph Sorry if it dulled your enjoyment 😅 I just take issue with worldbuilding logistical holes in the central premise of a story.
Glad you liked it, KL. The others are also very good, and have their own story lines, but they pull it off very well. Thank you for this one.
When you grow up in such a control environment, including spoech, plus an environment of true loss the f word just doesn't come close. That's why they aren't swearing. Nothing is taken for granted not even a word. When true loss happens you don't scream cr@p or b*tch. It's either a primal scream or a deep silence.
For some people, maybe. Lots of people deal with loss and immense stress differently, which is why I found it surprising that *nobody* swore.
Big applause to Holly for editing 🔥
I wrote the 4 movies off for a decade. Then, I watched them… a year or so later, I own all 4 on blu ray 😂 I would’ve never thought I would like them that much… and the song from Mockingjay part 1… fuhgeddaboudit! I have the lyrics tattooed in my brain. I even catch myself singing it randomly.
Now, with all that said… do I ship my dude card back, or should I just shred it?
What do you mean? These stories are definitely not solely for women to enjoy!

That is mahogany!😄
I can’t wait to follow you on this journey through the Hunger Games. I promise I will watch every episode!!!
If you liked this, then you should watch Battle Royale (2000), that movie is really crazy
And with much better characters, quite a feat considering there's almost double the contestants (50 in the BR book, 42 in the movie)
The movies are really good, but the books are absolutely outstanding. Totally worth the hype.

You have to see Cato as Bjorn Ironside in Vikings
I love your description of being a visual reader, this may help my son get into reading too ❤
Rue is also in Star Wars Acolyte
One of these franchises that took me forever to actually watch myself because it was either too hyped up or I didn't like something around it. In this case, I'm just not the biggest fan of Jenniger Lawrence. Also, I had to read the first bookin college, and YA novels were just never my thing, regardless of the genre. But the movies were on TV 2 years ago around Christmas while I was visiting my mom (don't have regular TV at home anyway), and she wanted to see them, so I said ok. I didn't hate them, and because the last one would've been while I was traveling back home, and I hate leaving things undone, I watched reaction videos for the first few movies, so I would know the actors actual voices (on tv the movies were dubbed in German) and the watched the final movie, all in one sitting xD
Definitely looking forward to your reactions to these movies tho, it's always cool to see what you notice and take from stories :)

Hello! I'm new here, and I absolutely loved your reaction! I loved that you noticed small details! I am glad you'll be reading the books too.
Hi, nice to meet you! Currently in Chapter 9 of the first book and loving it!
yes! our precious son Amos appears in this series, and many other cameos! enjoy!
I wish so desperately I could watch this series for the first time with fresh eyes. I feel it would be life changing.
My thought is that peeta asked to train alone so he could tell haymitch he’s in love with katniss and see what haymitch would say to using that to help katniss win and came up with the idea to say it during the interviews
Aww, hi, puppy❤
I like to see the movie before I read the book, too. Y'know how everyone always says "the book was better?" Well, I figured if I watched the movie and liked it, wouldn't reading the book then build on the experience (because it's probably better)? And it usually does. Things that are touched on but never expanded, cool stuff that got cut for time, characters that had been removed for irrelevance or because another character could cover that role - instead of being pissed it wasn't in the movie, you get to discover it all when you read the book. It's the way. Except you have to have the discipline to not read the book beforehand, which isn't always easy.
YESSS! How you explained it is perfect.
Apologies @nazimelmardi I wish I had the time to read entire book series before I decide to react to the movies here on the channel.
If I had to rank them, it'd be 2,1,4, 3. The last two could kinda be interchangeable

The training lady saying some of them will die from exposure was on some BS 😂
The shaky cam was definitely overused in this film. Director should’ve cut back on that a bit for a much better effect.
Yeah I'm glad they changed for the rest of the movies.
Read the books the same year the first movie came out (wasn't really aware that it was a big thing until the movies came out).
The first movie was good but quite visually underwhelming when compared to the first book. But they have a smaller budget for this one, so I can't blame them. They did their best with what they had.
The Expanse?!? YAAASSSS
Random tidbit, but psycho knife girl(Clove) is the Orphan girl, Isabelle Fuhrman. 😅
Ohmygosh Sokka is so cuuute, give her loves for me, please! :)
I also was NOT a fan of the camera work, so much so that I hated the movie the first time I watched it. I can enjoy it more now, but am so thankful they abandoned the shakey cam for the remainder of the franchise.
You’ll recognize a lot of memes and GIFs from this series
That was the only one out of all 5 movies!
Won't spoil the book differences but the monsters at the end were much more disturbing in the book

when you get to X-Men Days of Future Past makebsure you watch the extended cut callee "The Rogue Cut".
She easily could have not realized that those berries were deadly and she was essentially having peeta and katniss taste test everything for her without them realizing it.
the scoring is 1-12, she did not get the best score u can get
A movie you might consider, it's a little similar but more f***ed up, The Hunt.
Movies were pretty good but the books are better. They had to cut out so much that the first should have been 2 movies instead of the 3rd.
Can you please react to the Maze Runner trilogy 😊
Also one thing that I always consider is that at some point we root for Cato to die because hes "the bad one", and we want to see him die as entertainment just as the Capitol watches the games as entertainment. Every district is in that fucked up situation, yes some of them are more privileged but its like.... While we are busy fighting each other, the higher ups are calling the shots.
random but why do you have a christmas tree so early?
It's not a tree. It is a 600pc string lights product that is intertwined with fake greenery on an L shaped display stand.
"Uuurrrggghh this fuck! " 😂😂😂😂
Battle Royale for Americans 😅
@@LordVolkov no. It is its own thing and you should look at Stephen King's The Running Man which was actually the first story like this.
@@gailseatonhumbert Yeah, totally different - An equal number of boys and girls are trapped in a shrinking zone expected to kill each other until only 1 survivor remains, while being televised for political purposes. And the survivors of the first movie do a revolution later.
Which am I talking about?
“F, F, F” you kiss your mother with that mouth? Cuz it’s fine.
I thought that these were going to be tween garbage. I was wrong.
YA can often be very adult! I am told the books are even more gruesome.
This was a very interesting reaction. But please don't misuse the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!
Uhg, The casting in the movie was so bad. Total white washing of pretty much all of them. Peta should be larger, taller and Katniss was supposed to be smallish and Olive Skinned.
