I read an article earlier this year in which some Japanese collector's recently noticed there were fake packs and sealed boxes of vintage sets that appeared frequently in some second hand stores in Japan. Upon close inspection of the fake sealed products, there were irregularities with the sealed products that were found compared to what the collectors have in their collections.
On the matter of the sealed boxes, the print quality was slightly off in colours, while also having a bit of blurriness in the quality of the print.
One of the irregularities on the packs was the feel by touch. If touching the material on an original pack and the fake one, there were slight difference. Though the difference could be unnoticed unless you had an original pack to compare with, and the fake packs could pass as genuine ones.
Another of the irregularities they noticed that became a clear give away before opening one of those packs to inspect the cards was the bottom sealed portion of the packs. The heat press, which causes the material to slightly melt so it would seal the pack was pressed precisely over the edge of the packs on the fake ones. On some packs, you would only have 3 rows of square dents while some others had the 4 rows of square dents like the real packs.
But even those with 4 rows of square dents were not sealed like the original packs, they were still sealed right over the edge of the packs, while the real packs have a 2 - 3 mm gap between the seal press and the edge of the pack.
By watching your opening video, the seal press definitely appears to be on the edge of the packs, while some also appeared to only have 3 rows of square dents, which is identical to one of the irregularities that was mentionned in the article.
No definitive answer as to where those packs originate. But it could be possible they come from China. Chinese counterfeit cards for Magic the Gathering recently became difficult to be distinguishable by many collectors and players. So having counterfeiters making counterfeit sealed products to target the Japanese market could be a possibility.
As for the origin of the box you opened, it could be possible it is one of those fake boxes that started to appear in Japan. It might have been bought by a second hand store in Japan from the counterfeiters as a genuine box, and it went through a chain of transaction that ended up to be in your possession in the end. :(
Most likely these fakes where made back in 2000 likely to be sold via hong kong or similair to japan or surrounding countries.

@@Zretgul_timerunner What makes you so sure, that these are old school fakes? I remember having fake cards back in 2000 and they were MUCH worse quality, especially on the holographic part.
@@StAngerNo1 makes me think no i know they are old school fakes, these boxes arent new they where made around release in most likely japan. As "proxies" something done to this day (look up garage kits for a modelling comparision)
You lot are aware that old school japanese arent copied in china at all with very few exceptions, since the quality needed to be copied is to high to make it worthwhile. They also somehow must get japanese collectors to buy from them. Most of japanese boxes out there are players who kept them forgot they owned them and then when rediscovered they sell them.
The fact you lot havent seen how good proxies from japan can be tells alot.
Another way i am certain about my statement is that modern fakes are dogshit quality wise they dont care to make them look real since they arent gonna sell those to collectors rather to gullible mom an pops who knows no better. This box was also sold back when japanese boxes werent worth 1/100th there english counterparts. The japanese market barely consumes fakes at all since upto rather recently japanese products werent even worth the effort.
To make money they whould need to flood the market with these fakes in japan where theres no where near as many people who buyes these. Hell this is the first time ive seen one of the good proxy boxes in years since ive seen one before way back in 2011 same make and the same set and equally "good" fakes.
I feel this, 5 years ago I got scammed on a 1st edition shadowless base set box + 2 blisters.

You the man Poke, you actually inspired me to get to my parent's attic and search for my childhood collection my brother & I had. Ended up finding quit a bit of 1st edition base sets, even a couple shadowless! None in mint condition or anything, but the nostalgia is insane. Keep it up man, love the content
Neo gen japanese release was when the counterfeits started to boom. That eras blurred print, darker shadowing, glossy feel, and shrink wrapped holofoils brings back memories!
This is the best for the community. The more knowledge we have going forward in purchasing packs, the more we are aware of possible counterfeit items, and protecting ourselves. 2 thumbs up Rev on providing more info for us.

I never got huge into Pokemon but I was always a Yugioh guy, and those were some high quality fakes tbh..like, it sounds like the feel was a little off on them which is a red flag but look wise they mostly looked good, just the issues with the font sizes and text being in a slightly wrong place. In a way I'm glad someone that recognized it and planned to crack it open got the box, I can only imagine how many boxes like this could be floating around sealed.

Best of luck resolving this! I was also scammed through buying on amazon. Xy evolutions booster box the packs were glued shut and cards came upside down. Although it was 110$ bucks at the time it was my first ever booster box i opened and just wanted to achieve pulling a charizard bc i didnt has a kid. Enough about me, best of luck to you Rev! I hope you get your money back in full
What’s crazy is if the packs were properly sealed, and they took the time to put in different cards in each pack, we may have never realized it
Nah, He would've realized the moment he said they were in the same line-up.
The only real way for the packs to go unnoticed was having a actual 1 to 1 identical, which is just impossible because you have to get machines worth a pretty penny to produce the same quality

I was watching that live and I feel so bad for you... tbh I thought they were real at first. They looked so real but the font threw me off as we had a closer look. Gladly you had a real pack there to see them next to each other. My god I almost cried when it was revealed that the cards were glued on some shiny paper.
There was loads of fakes back in the day when they first come out. It’s see same for any fad. It’ll get even worse now the prices are being inflated.
Back when I want to say 15..we had tons of fakes especially Japanese cards I'm 29 now it wasn't uncommon to have fakes we could even tell at my school bc of gloss and weird print
I was here for this too. Such a bummer that this happened and felt so bad! Though you handled the situation like a champ! Once you held up and compared the typlosions together I knew it was 100% fake at that point. It's so sad that people will do these type of things.
Mad love and respect for the research going into this! Saving a lot of people a lot of pain tooling people with the knowledge to help fight fakes.
I’m assuming it was probably one of a batch of fakes made for shops to retail by a factory that was making real ones, seems like they had all the spec and just made some cheaper versions with minor adjustments to the layout on the cards to try and protect themselves with a slightly cheaper production process to cut their costs inline with a cheaper selling price.
This sucks but I find a little slither of a positive that it was you with your reach and knowledge who took this box out of circulation, not some lone collector who might not have had the ability to trace it or a parent buying it as an investment for their child etc.
Maybe its time we got PSA or Beckett to start an authentication process for sealed products, maybe something the market would accept like openings and resealing for authentication where everyone is fine with a certain level of verification that wont effect the price? I can see this becoming a major issue in the sports card market too moving forwards so it would be a valued service.

I've been looking at 2 different WOTC boxes to buy and im extra sketched out now.
i think this box was made all the way back when the set was in stores, the counterfeit was targeted at kids back then rather than collectors nowadays. there would be no reason to go to these lenghts to imitate the real cards unless they were supposed to be sold to kids who couldnt tell the difference, bought single packs and played with the cards.
Idk if it's a 10,000 box they might want to trick the buyer so they don't find out. He could of bought it from a place that would refund the money out of the sellers accounts for scams.

This is most likely the case:
Someone bought it from someone, and decided to open a few packs ( those being opened upon opening the box ) and realized it was fake... and decided to resealed it and pass the box to other buyers .

What got me was that he thought three completely separate things were a coincidence. Bad centering/printing on the cards, blurry printed packaging and unsealed packaging. That's three different machines, how could all of them malfunction and this box get past QA. 🤦♀️

How do you purchase the packs that get opened on stream?
This is an eye opener as someone getting back into collecting. I use to have a lot of the first editions and old Japanese cards as a kid. Ended up giving them to a church as a teenager. Now I’m trying to rebuild my old collection. I never even knew there would be fakes that good. Would’ve tricked me. Do you have a video on how to identify fakes or real cards? I propose that we as a community forbid the trade of empty booster boxes. I'd assume most fake booster boxes are created starting with these.
There’s collectors out there( like myself)who can’t afford brand new booster boxes and collecting empty boxes is the next best thing. Just completing banning empty booster box sales will not help at all and is a bit cruel.

@@anon1066 I'm not much into pokemon but into mtg instead and this is the exact thing we're facing in mtg right now. You need tons of expertise and really good scans of the cards right now, to identify if cards are fake. For cards that are worth real money, I tend to always post them into a FB group, that is all about authenticating cards bc I just can't tell if they're legit (for really good fakes at least).
