regarding the order in which they learn the elements, specifically it's supposed to go in the order of the Avatar Cycle (air > water > earth > fire) starting in your native element. so an earthbending avatar wouldn't necessarily be pushed to go and train in air and water before fire
The sequence picks up from the element you’re born into, since Roku is a born fire bender the order for him would be Air to Water to Earth. If your born water bender, the order would be earth to fire to air

@@mastouriedam5845 Well, Jeong Jeong was training Aang to control the spread of the fire through the leaf. I think it's reasonable to assume from that that firebenders can adjust the output of flame that's already been created, or even snuff it out.
I'm trying to think of any examples from the rest of the series, but the only thing that comes to mind at the moment are the flames in Ozai's throne room.
@@barbaros99 but wouldnt that be the equivalent of like, stopping water from leaking? cause you're only preventing it from spreading, but not reducing the amount (that's the best example I could think of) same thing with what JJ was trying to to teach aang, cause thats what makes fire dangerous from his prespective, the fact that you cant undo the damage that's been dealt by putting it out , the bes you can do is stop it from causing more harm y controling it
@@mastouriedam5845 You couldn't undue the damage, but you could stop the fire from consuming the leaf entirely by draining (not sure if that's the right word) the energy from it. If you can't control the strength of the flame, you couldn't stop it from spreading at all.
That idea is kinda seen in season 3 with the original fire. Granted I don't think they "bend" it away, just gets so small it dies out.

I've always loved that scene in the tent with Roku!! Apparently this episode won an Annie Award for storyboarding (by Lauren MacMullan).
I like to think that it is subtly implied she is thinking of water bending differently as the season progresses. When she first tries to teach Aang, she only knows a couple moves or so, and one isn't even mastered yet. But as she travels and after the scroll, you slowly see her using other moves like when she froze the water that she splashed on Jett to pin him. I saw this scene as her just trying to figure out how to ease the burns and in doing so, just happened to figure out the healing ability.
"You want to stop breathing?" is such a great comedic line delivered perfectly. Jeong Jeong is still my favourit 'master' character from the show. (if you don't count Iroh)

I think the idea is that the teachings of airbenders plays very self destructively into controlling fire. Those instincts need to be tempered with the other elements before learning fire. If you start with a different element you'd have different limitations that need to be overcome. Don't want to get spoilery, but while Aang is learning earthbending I think this is expanded on well.

Ngl I think Jeong Jeong isn’t really a good teacher because he has so much internalized hate towards himself and firebending in general, not really good traits for a master.

I didn't find Katara stumbling into healing that strange. You have to remember Katara has never seen a water bender. She knows nothing of the art other than through trial and error. She recently got the scroll and also recently started working with Aang. Aang has experience with focusing to connect with his element. She is probably learning tons just watching him even if the styles are different.
Also, who's to say Katara hasn't been using water bending to heal herself her whole life? It's only in the past few weeks that she's learned how to really concentrate and connect with her element. I'd not be surprised if she's been subconsciously healing herself faster for years without even realizing it. An injury that would take others a week or two to heal could take her a couple of days and still be unnoticed. People she helped seemed to heal almost as fast as she did because she was helping. So, her reference points would be skewed to healing very fast. Now that her powers are growing she's seeing glowing with even faster healing.
She probably thought something was up but didn't know what. That's why she said she kinda always knew. She put two and two together.
Whoever wrote this episode was a big fan of Apocalypse Now.
