  • Grant is taking me to my first CarMax dealer-only auction. I have heard these for years but have never been to one. It was very interesting, to say the least.

My wife and I sold her 2017 gmc Acadia denali to carmax about 6 months ago and it was the easiest sale we ever made. They popped the hood and looked, took it for a short test drive, and a quick walk around, made us an offer that was thousands more than any dealer had offered us on trade in. From the time we got there til the time we walked out with a check was about an hour. Based on that experience I would never buy a car from Carmax.

I bought a 2016 Mustang GT with only 2100 miles from Carmax back in December 2017. Almost five years later and the car never gave me a day of trouble. Still enjoying it today.

I'm an independent used car dealer in California. CarMax will buy cars from used car dealers. I had a Chevrolet Spark that I sold to them. It was an accident free car. I brought it to a specific CarMax in Los Angeles area. The Assistant GM found that the rear 1/4 panel had been spliced in. He showed me the welds on the 1 side vs the other side. Definitely and clearly had been done. He dropped his offer by $2,000, and said no way will they sell that on their lots. He just said everything that has issues goes to the CarMax dealer auction. I asked if a CarMax that had been on their lot for 90 days would go to their auction. He said no, it's only the cars that have problems. I'd never buy anything from CarMax dealer auction.

Saying a vehicle has problems is very subjective. I have no idea the level of expertise that CARMAX has for their technicians but I would say they are not ASE certified (they maybe). I am guessing they may have a head shop person that is an ASE person. Thet don't want to do extensive and expensive repairs. Let's say a car comes in with inop window regulators but the rest of the vehicle is tip top. They may not want to be tearing into door panels and replacing those things or have the expertise to do it so it goes to the auction. Buying such a vehicle in my opinion would be a good deal as window regulators are easy to do by a good tech.

  • @Smashachu

That is the sound of a or multiple lifters on the valve train. The increase in frequency is because of the variable valve timing kicking in. If you wanted to diagnose it for sure, you'd listen to hear if it's coming from above the engine or below the engine. If it's coming from the oil pan below the engine it's either rod knock or on the torque convert/flex plate. This noise is too high pitch to be rod knock which is more of a bassy thumping sound and the only other noise that can be making this type of sound would be coming from the valves which are cheap to fix. If you wanna save yourself alot of money i would advise getting an automotive stethoscope, you can isolate where the noise is specifically coming from with this.

The sound in the Toyota camry you heard was the ring gear on the flywheel in the transmission. I bought a as is camry out of California(rust free) and got burned, 11,000$ for a car that needed a new transmission basically.
I did learn a very expensive lesson on buying used online from the other side of the country. This was a major Toyota dealership too.
Don't do business with penske Toyota in LA California. They apparently scammed a few others and are in court with them.
Not worth my time, I just did a core trade in at my local Toyota dealership for a remanufactured transmission.

Multiple car youtubers speak highly of carmax. The bumper to bumper warranty they have is 2nd to none. Carmax vehicles are not cheap either. Comparing prices to other dealers, they are high. Carmax doesn't sell old high mileage vehicles either. It's possible they have good high mileage cars at the auction. If buy the prices get ran up beyond sellable value then this auction is a waste of time for any dealer who isn't a lot financed repo lot.

What they auction is what they won't sell. Too high in miles...too high in reconditioning costs...too unlikely to sell, or has been on their lot for months…too old…frame damage. And, honestly, a lot of the pearls they take in on trade destined for their auction...get snapped up by staff. At least this was the way when I worked there. You can find stuff...but keep that in the front of your mind when looking at late model and low mileage...WHY ARE THEY NOT SELLING THIS ON THEIR LOT? Even the 2WD F-150, it could easily be transferred down south to one of their other stores where 4WD is not important. I do remember, back in the day, any car with an After Market hitch was declared "frame damaged" by them as the holes in the frame were normally drilled out larger to mount the hitch. Keep an eye out for cars with after market hitches to help find good cars they won't sell. My 2011 Impreza Outback Sport was "Frame Damaged" for having a CURT Hitch...even though the 2011 MY offered a Subaru Hitch as an accessory. All because the Subaru hitch did not require "drilling" and the CURT did.
