The world of dealer auctions has changed a lot over the last few years. It is harder and harder to find guys like Jason who take such pride in their jobs.

As someone who is trying to start up a small car dealership, this is useful information.

Yep. My truck is at a mechanic shop now and he killed my motor. Ima sue him and get a new motor. Had an idle issue, likely a throttle body or a throttle position sensor since it was throwing tps codes. He put a new ECU on it and now the motor is bad according to him. According to him, I got bent rods and cylinder 7 and 8 are down. It wasn’t like that.
When my second daughter was born I was unemployed. We needed a car but didn't have much money. I saw a sign on a fence for a car auction. Sold as is, cash that day in full. I went to the auction and just looked at cars and watched to understand what was happening. The next Saturday I showed up with $2,000 cash in hand and ready to go. I picked out three cars I liked with one that I really really wanted. I wanted an 85 Volvo 240 wagon, blue with blue interior, 4 cyl nonturbo, 4 speed with overdrive. The drivers seat was torn badly, 3 of the 4 windows were down and would not go back up, the interior was moldy, the rear hatch had the window broken out, one of the tires was the wrong size being drasticly too tall, the auction listed the heater as not working at all, the carpet was badly torn up, the overdrive button was broken in two, it had 130,000 miles on it but the motor had no oil other than a couple of very minor spots, the coolant was green, the engine bay relatively clean. No one had looked under the passenger seat. When i look at a car i see everything! There was a folder with all the maintenance records from Volvo. Not just oil changes but a recent timing belt, catalytic converter, points, plug wires and more. It was well cared for but had minor things go wrong all at once so it ended at auction. It came up before the other two I targeted. I got it for $250!! Then i also got the Volvo 240 sedan in similar shape for $425 and the 740 sedan in similar shape for $260!! I got three cars for just a bit over $1,300 with title and taxes. My wife was furious! I'm unemployed, new baby and a 2 year old, almost no money left now. I called four friends to get them home, made a list of parts needed and went to the junk yard. Fixed everything on all cars for under $700 over the next week. Over the next year the wagon got a lot of really nice interior parts but ditched a lot of weight in the process, upgraded the climate control to digital zoned from a 2003 V40, factory guages to monitor more and fill in blank spaces in the dash, got a carbon hood and alloy rear hatch dropping the cars weight more new performance cam, timing gear, bigger fuel injectors, high flow water and fuel pumps, bigger throttle body, drop suspension springs, bigger sway bars, performance struts and shocks, strut tower braces, suspension bushings, 18 inch wheels from a V70R and more. I had it looking sharp! I sold the 240 sedan after fixed and buffed for $3,500! I got $4,700 for the 740 sedan! I kept the wagon for five years until it had 340,000miles on it and still sold it for $3,500. I made $7,200 in three weeks and getting a good dependable wagon, saving our family! I kept doing this one Saturday every month, 2 to 4 cars. All needing minor repairs. I stuck with makes and models of cars I had tools for, a knack for fixing and the junk yard had lots of inventory for parts. It became my job for a year. Finally the state sent me a letter telling me to open an official business or stop. I stopped even though i should have kept going. I was good at it!! My wife at the time thought it was too risky. I was addicted to the auction! The sound of the auctioneer, the strange head nods, waves or jesters people had for bidding, the rituals people would do, the popcorn, noise, smell of the cars, the different things you would see people do to these cars or things you would find in them, all of it. That's how I almost became a car dealer.

@anonymous i've been in the trade for 47 years retired four years ago,this story will straighten out of lot of confusion for the young guys,YOU HAVE TO SPECIALIZE,in 1980 when the electronic cars took off and GM AND FORD AND MOPAR decided to go forward with design,a line mechanic had to specialize,i remember the service manager came out on a friday,said service meeting 20 minutes,he told us,no more cleaning the tickets,everyone had to pick a trained repair and live with it,i chose auto ac and transmissions,,i was given all the rear axle i could cover,and then had to retrain on front end alignment when others called in sick,i didn't make killer money till i went where the population was exorbitant,like dallas-- ft worth,more people more money,its the way of it,hows 3800 a week rock you,its out there and its out there still,as long as cars move on rubber there will be a need for a trained repair,simple,don't doubt,its out there,they still call me,NOPE,my biggest concern now is how long my bait lasts in the sun,and beer and ice,going fishing
@anonymous the trade and the dealerships have cornered themselve,according to their franchise,they have,HAVE to have personel on premises that can repair their makes,what alot of them are doing is legal just not ethical,they have one or two ase masters on the line and numerous b,c rated repair mechanics,this situation happening as of now,has got them buffaloed,there makes are too complex without thousands of dollars of test equipment and then there's the design that is screwing them royal,alot of guys are leaving the trade,for what i don't know,most of the guys i worked with thru 60's thru 2002 used to keep their class a license current and started driving over the road,the situation with the ford injectors is a design flaw from ford,just like the international debacle over the 6.0 liter diesel,750 million in suits and now the economy is crashing,parts will be the real problem starting in may,the problem with all of the ford trucks now is taking the cab off of the frame to work on these plastic chromed fiat trucks,any work done on a 75k harley truck should be done with the engine out of the frame,after rebuilding a few thousand cars and trucks,i'v e learned that trying to bend over fenders and grills don't cut anymore ,design kicks you real good,if you're trying to make money on sales of collectibles and other desirables,start with a quality vehicle,keeps repairs down,i did restoration for alot of years,and old cars is my favorite,why? THEY SELL THEMSELVES

Small auctions rely on repeat customers, thus they provide better service and usually lower fees

If you ask around your local shops there are a ton of mechanics out there who will go to the auction with you if you pay them for their time. Usually a couple hundred bucks can get one to come along and give vehicles you are interested in a quick inspection. They are limited to what they can or can't do at an auction but if you have an auction that is completely hands off and nobody can start or inspect the vehicles don't waste your time. If you can't hook up your scanner and check the history to see if codes had been cleared recently don't go to that auction. You want to be able to open the hood, check the fluids, look under the car, start it up and put it in forward and reverse gears, see what accessories work, check for lights on the dash, and hook up a good scanner on it that can see all the history codes. That is my starting point for if I will even go to an auction or not.
Anyone who is buying a wholesale vehicle at an auction should have enough knowledge to understand what's going on and what to expect. It's a good place to get a cheap(ish) car if you know what you are doing. If you are trying to make money and resell the car(s) you buy you should know enough about working on cars to give them a decent inspection yourself. A normal person off the street should never go to an auction to buy a daily driver for themselves unless they know how to diagnose what could possibly be wrong with the car and be able to repair it themselves or be ready to pay a shop to repair it once it's bought.
Wholesale cars are what dealerships don't want. These are cars that are too old or too high mileage to be put on their used car lots. Sometimes repos are there and a lot of insurance cars end up at auction.
A wholesale auction is like any other auction. It doesn't matter if it's antiques, livestock, or anything else, if you don't know that subject really well and don't understand what kind of vehicles are sold at those auctions just don't go. Nobody is going to get a $50,000+ vehicle for $15,000 at an auction. It happens from time to time but people also sometimes win millions in the lottery. The odds of it happening to someone outside the industry on their first time going to an auction are so close to zero it's not worth even thinking about.
If you aren't a mechanic or don't own a used car dealer with a mechanic on payroll just stay away from wholesale auto auctions. It won't be a good time and then the buyer will be upset that they got a crap car and blame it on the auction house for selling them a piece of crap. If folks want to go to an auction without the knowledge they need and don't want to or can't bring a professional to inspect the vehicle they want to purchase they are going to have a really bad experience. It's loud and confusing, so if you haven't been there before and don't know enough about cars to make a decision on if it's a good or bad purchase don't blame dishonest sales people. The cars sold at auction are garbage. They are what nobody wanted, not even used car dealers wanted them. So they end up at auction and home mechanics who sell cars in their front yard buy them, repair them, and sell them. 99 out of 100 cars sold at auction are not ready or safe for the road. So don't expect to go find a gold nugget in a pile of pig crap, they just don't show up often enough to make it worth it.

Im a master tech, been wrenchin 40 plus years. I have a bunch of stories that involves auction cars that have been patched up from auction/wholesale lots. They were purchased blindly by sales, and then given to me to find and fix the bugs they have. To sell on (buy here pay here) lots I have worked for. I was put in the middle many times, because of the junk given to me to fix. I understand completely and appreciate this video! Thankyou!

I used to make sure my name was present on any vehicle I touched. Learned that back in high school auto shop. If your work is that good it will get recognized.

It started ruining my joy/hobby aspect of working on cars so I stopped doing it as a career and moved onto welding but when I was working in shops still; I would ALWAYS make sure my name was written every possible place it could be. I’d write it on every single page pertaining to each car 😂 the other guys I worked with would always say stuff and never understood it but I would always tell them that if they didn’t want their name on all the cars they’re working on; they’re obviously not doing a very good job because they’re worried about SOMETHING. If you do your job right, you have nothing to worry about 🤷🏻♂️ not to mention that whenever the odd asshole customer comes in and tries to get free service or money out of the shop for their own issues or something like that, they would always know I was the one who worked on it and I have a nothing-but trustworthy background with my work and also could cross reference cameras and bam. Scammer caught and they leave ashamed of themselves or embarrassed lmao I do miss it sometimes, but welding is fun so it’s whatever. I now have MUCH more fun and enjoy working on my own cars a lot more(except when they break down and leave me stranded somewhere l o l)
@@onehitterquitter2130 i was one of the top guys in my shop, and sometimes being one of the best in a shop is a blessing and a curse. because when one of the other guys screwed up a job and the customer came back it was given to me to fix.and that ended up costing me money as i worked mainly on commission on jobs i did. so i told the boss he needs to send these guys for more training and my boss asks me to train them and i said unless you are going to give me another 300 dollars a week in my paycheck to do it my answer is no...

I used to own the closest repair shop to a mid sized auction house. I had fixed so many of the dealer's cars that when I did show up at auction to buy some for my lot, often times they would back out of bidding The auctioneer would say, "And another one goes to the mechanic." Felt good to have had that level of respect at barely 30 years old. Thanks for putting this vid together. From broken frames to replacing accessory bearing plates on clean, shiny cars, often they would grumble, but knowing that someone honest had made the repairs, they would grimace, then pay the repair bill.

If a vehicle is an actual lemon aka lemon buyback its permanently stamped on the title reguardless of what state it's registered in.
I worked at an auction for 3 years as one of the lot managers and I can 100% agree with everything this guy is saying.
A big thing dealers did at my place was take there own keys and claim it was stolen so the auction would pay for a new set.
Messing with certain fuses during auction day so the car would run like shit and they get it for a cheaper price.
We even had a big named car dealer send people to sneak into our lot and chop shop there own vehicle and replace it with cheaper parts and claim an insurance job. Absolutely crazy some of the stuff that goes on people don't know about.
As to who this big named dealer was all I'll say is they have dealerships all across america and even in some other foreign countries. Even the most reputable dealers can do shady stuff. Beware

I got say being a younger guy with a baby face, one of the most annoying things is that no one respects your word, even if you've proven yourself to not come to the advisor/customer with the correct cause of the issue.

It's a problem in almost every field. I even get it from my own mother - I'm the most highly educated person in my family and any time i try to join a conversation my mom will say to everyone "ooh be careful or you'll get told you're wrong"

I remember one time we got a car from auction that listed as an AWD Mercury Mountaineer (basically a Ford Explorer). Our oil guy changed the oil, looked the vehicle over and put it on the lot to sell. Sometime later it sold..... About 4 months later a woman comes in pissed off that her "4x4" on her mountaineer doesn't work (it was snowing). I get it back to the shop and put it in the air and the entire AWD system is gone, no front driveshaft, no front diff, no front axles, nothing (guessing it was removed from sell before going to auction). We wound up trading her out of the car and into something nicer. We removed all the AWD badging on car and put it back on the lot for a 2wd comparable price.

Knew a guy that traded in a small suzuki 4wd with a bad whine in 5th gear. He put a 4 speed gear knob on it.

Attended a local auction years ago and watched beat up junk go for double what they were worth.
Went back the next week and most of the same people were there buying the same cars from the previous week.
I arttended 3 or 4 more times and figured out that the auction employees were bidding up the cars and about half were really not for sale.
A few years later I went to a national auction house and bought a 5 year old Jeep Cherokee with a long list of cosmetic problems for half blue book value for that vehicle.
Just goes to prove that the owner and employees are what make a business.
I would buy from this guy any time!!

After years of working at a parts store near an auction....this man tells the truth. Dealers will rip each other off and you wonder why they have NO issue doing it to a customer.

Well, 99% of auction buyers don’t want to pay “good-car-price”
My grandfather was a mechanic. Worked for local government. Every van, truck or rig he ever worked on had a sticker in it saying who serviced the vehicle. His sticker was always placed with care, with the correct mileage, with the correct date and most of all his name, all clearly written because he put his name behind his work. These were the 1960s and 1970s where cars etc were just less reliable than today. And needed more upkeep. But anyone getting into a vehicle he repaired or looked after had confidence it was done right. No shortcuts.
A different breed, a different generation. Glad to see there are still some people out there who care and do the job right.
This guy has definitely made himself into my list of favourite vinwiki hosts, its cool to see a bread and butter mechanic that actually cares, extremely relatable (im also a mechanic) good to see its the same in the industry all over the wprld

If the vehicle didn't have some kind of problem, they wouldn't be at the auction. No dealer chooses to sell their cars for wholesale price over a retail sale.

@@mexicanspec New car dealers will, esp luxury brands. They have strict limits on how long they will keep a 'good' trade on their 'pre-owned' lot, usually 6 weeks. After that, all they care about is getting rid of it. Trade in value etc is already recouped in the ongoing kickback they get from your loan and they generally don't give you much above wholesale for a trade in. FYI, knowing this kind of stuff is how you buy cars for cheap.... You can easily knock 40-50% of the price if you make them an offer just before they have to auction it...
@@ckm-mkc Yes that is right and they send those cars to the bigger auctions to maximize their sale. I worked at a new car store and I know how it works. We never sent a perfectly good car to an auction. If a car didn't sell, the car would be wholesaled or traded for a different model that would sell.
Vinwiki needs more straight shooters like this guy. A lot of the stories lose their luster when the teller turns out to be a self-dealing jerk.

One of the upsides of being mechanically Inclined is the fact that you'll NEVER have to deal with sketchy mechanics. The downside however is that your time is spent Forever Alone pretty much just working on stuff. It's a trade, Spend Alot of Money or Alot of time, Chose One....
@anonymous We bought a remanufactured alternator from autozone for our 2000 Mercedes Benz s500 and it lasted exactly 2 months. It cost about 450 bucks too by the way.
Recently… i had my engine flood with oil (my fault) sensor broke told me it was low etc kept pouring oil in… so i flooded it. So i took it to a mechanic shop which is my step dads bestfriend… told me i needed a whole new engine & tranny i was baffled when i knew what was wrong he kept trying to say new head gaskets etc bc it sprayed a shit ton of smoke out was disappointed to know these shady mf’s exist took it home tore apart everything fixed it within a couple days… its a benz & man these suck to take apart lmao & all i do is work on it & be alone & i also run a business & always alone & wrenching😂 so i get you there 100%

As a mechanic myself, I completely understand the pain of always being the bearer of bad news.
As a reconditioning manager at a used car dealership I can relate. A huge amount of inventory we buy from auctions is misrepresented. Glad to know that technicians like this guy still exist at the auction house. Good job VINwiki!!!

I can remember dealer auctions before wrecked cars had salvage titles ,there was some real sketchy shit going on in them days.
My mechanic has over 59 years of experience. He worked on cars in the motor pool for the USMC and became a chief mechanic for MEDOT. I trust him. He charges me $15 per hour. I always pay him more. He says never ever buy an auction vehicle. If they were worth selling, they wouldn't be taking a lowball offer at an auction. If there is money to be made on a car, no one would ever take a loss. When he works on a vehicle, people tell their friends about his work. He is inexpensive, experienced and he wouldn't let you drive a car that he wouldn't trust his grandchildren in. That is what is missing in todays world. People don't care what happens after the vehicle is out of their hands.

Went on. Had to be really careful not to get burned. We got burnt a couple of times. Basically leave it and run it back through the auction because he didn't want to sell it. I remember seeing bondo 4 inches thick.

I worked for one of the largest dealer auctions before COVID, everything he said was on point. It was my dream job. I hope to work there again. I got to see some really cool cars.

For several years, I worked for an auction owned by the big M, first as a driver and later as a security officer. I can tell you that almost 1/2 of the vehicles should never have been there. They should have been in the junkyard. Many had to be pushed through the lanes because they wouldn't even run. The things I saw that sellers tried to pull would make several episodes. The main thing I learned was which area dealers were reputable and which ones to stay far away from.
I've bought cars at that auction. The reason I liked it was they actually would offer to fix it for a reasonable cost. A lot of times as a small dealer even if your willing to deal with a bad deal the question can be. When do I have time/space to fix this. The ability to answer that question was always a good thing
Too true. I was a mobile mech working. Went to do a pre purchase inspection at a buy here pay here lot. The owner came to me and said..."Hey Padre...got two bills for you if you can (bless) this car for me." I told him no thanks, I work for the client. The industry is grimey
I've done a few of those Beetle alternators. Pop the passenger headlight out, pull the old alternator out through the headlight hole, install the new one, reinstall the headlight. A little weird, but not that difficult.
Sounds easier than an alt. change on a PT Cruiser....

@niftertube Arbitration is having an objective, sufficiently knowledgeable third party make a legally-binding decision for something. In this case, the arbitrator decides if the seller was honest about the listing or not and whether or not the buyer is obligated to complete the purchase.

This is too true. Working at a shop the customers that know a bit about cars always think that the younger employees lie and so they want to hear someone older more experienced say the exact same words, it's infuriating sometimes, but I guess that just how it goes.

The GM active fuel management system for those cars and some of the Silverados is rumored to be the worst thing ever. Killing engines before their time.

Awesome how dealers want protection but as soon as the auto makes it to their lot all bets are off. They’ll bend you over and send you out the door “as is”. Special place in hell for car salesmen next to lawyers.

I’ll save everyone time. The answer is very broke. “Wholesale” auctions aren’t very “wholesale” when most dealers are trying to get retail price or more then retail at “wholesale” auction. How do I know? I have my dealership license and have been to every auction on the east coast.

Side note, you do not have to remove the entire front end to remove the alternator for most VW Beatles. You can actually remove the passenger headlight and the alternator fits perfectly through the headlight. Figured this out the hard way, replaced the alternator about 5 times on a beater VW Beatle due to defective alternators from O'Rileys and Autozone. OEM junkyard alternator was the one that actually worked. You can also remove the throttle body and the fuel rail and remove it from the top of the engine compartment
I used to be a state safety inspector at used/new car lot. The used cars in my state must pass inspection BEFORE being sold or a junk affidavits must be signed by buyer and car towed off lot. Yet i would get used car salesmen sold cars before they where inspected. I had a mitsu mirage the entire frame/body underside was rusted through. He begged me to pass it as he ILLEGALLY started paperwork to sell this car. This is why state safety inspections ARE A GOOD THING. It keeps people honest. I never passed anyone with issues.
Me when I traded in my car with “just a cylinder 1 misfire” when it had 0 compression on cylinder 1 knowing damn well that car was going to auction
I just traded in my ram with a hemi with a dead cylinder, they didn't even test drive it and gave me top dollar trade in

That’s a good mechanic right there. You can tell he’s got genuine enthusiasm for the job, he’s eager to share information, probably the kind of guy that will explain every detail of the problem, and seems outright incapable of deception. I hope he inspires others to do the same.
Just retired from 45 years as mechanic. As a honest mechanic you earn less than the thief next to you. You get less work, do his comebacks because he can't fix them. I had a boss tell me once that I was a good mechanic but I needed to sell more. I have always like fixing cars but don't recommend getting into the trade.
