I don’t care what anyone says about this band. This song is such a huge part of my childhood. After my parents divorced, my dad raised me by himself and we took car trips every weekend and this song was heavily played here on radio stations in Germany. Nowadays I live 600 km away from my dad and miss those times but I’m super grateful that my dad managed to raise me by himself and send me to uni ❤️

If I remember they were the victim of radio stations VASTLY overplaying them to the point people were sick of hearing the same few songs. Unfortunately, people blamed Nickelback instead of radio stations. Then it became the "thing" to hate them. What's funny is that hatred actually made them even more popular since they were always being talked about.
Because they "Sold out" and their sound changed A LOT from their early days once they got popular so old fans started saying that they were bad,and everyone else just went with it

When I was younger I liked the sound and thought it was catchy but now these songs have become higher resolution in my mind and I listen to the lyrics and the meanings more than I once did. It is scary in a sense.

It was hated as a fallout from Canadian radio having to play a minimum % Canadian songs. given Canada has only produced Justin Beiber, Nickleback and carley rae jempson at the time period its easy to see why them on repeat would drive people crazy.

Tragically hip were in their prime, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Arcade Fire, Alexisonfire, Sam Roberts, The Arkells just a little after. Plenty of quality music coming out of Canada at that time. These guys just took up most of the airwaves. For me the annoying part was many songs just sounded the same, but as I get older I appreciate them a lot more.

Also lead singer have been a real asshole multiple times in interviews. He wanted to get paid for playing at a charity event for example. Thats also a part of it.
It is due to attitute of their lead singer in multiple situations, as well as fact that most of their well know songs sound very very similar, with only difference in lyrics. But mostly it is due how much of an asshole is mister shoe-face

I mean let's be honest if you listen to pop music it is either to dance to or sing along, not to concider musical valor of it. On the other hand if you have rock or rock related genere you want to be able to appriciate musicality of the song.
Even when critics especially the ones jealous of their success were hating on them, I always liked Nickleback and loved their sound. I never wavered, and only a weak person would have.

I am 72 years old and grew up with the Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, and later the Eagles. Nickleback was a good band they had some really good songs, some not so good and some I couldn't listen to. But so did most of my favorites. Nickelback was alright, most of the hate probably comes from people who can't play an e chord on a guitar.

Listened to this song as a kid a lot. Now that I'm finally fluent in english and understand the lyrics, this song hits a lot different; Nostalgic but also rediscovered with a deeper meaning in the lyrics I'm finally mature enough to grasp. Love Nickelback

Nickelback could have made it simpler, but they never came up for air in the first part of the song, then slowed it down a pace and reduced the volume on the music in the second part. Many people take the lyrical meaning to be a pennance for addiction, but I've always considered it more about the importance of not using and discarding the caring, loving people in our lives. Either way, this is Nickelback at their very best!!

I can't understand why Nickelback gets so much hate. I can still listen to this 20 years later and it doesn't even sound dated.
People complaining that he sings about generic topics - love, breakup, alcohol, partying. I really like his voice and style, so i don't really mind. If i wanted complex poetic lyrics about human existence I can go off to Nightwish or Tiamat :D

I think part of it is because this song was really overplayed after it came out in 2001. Same is true with other songs of theirs. There were way less options for listening to music compared to 2022, and radio stations and MTV played this song over and over. I remember really liking this when it came out, but I got sick of it because I was hearing it everywhere all the time.

People think it's fun to hate Nickleback but they don't see that these guys have been improving for the past couple of years. They might be a little generic but Five Finger Death Punch is a far far worse band!
Also lead singer have been a real asshole multiple times in interviews. He wanted to get paid for playing at a charity event for example. Thats also a part of it.
It is due to attitute of their lead singer in multiple situations, as well as fact that most of their well know songs sound very very similar, with only difference in lyrics. But mostly it is due how much of an asshole is mister shoe-face

Shadow8769 well I think in pop idea is more based on rythm and catchy lirics. I mean let's be honest if you listen to pop music it is either to dance to or sing along, not to concider musical valor of it. On the other hand if you have rock or rock related genere you want to be able to appriciate musicality of the song.
Loved it as a teenager just because it was just a radio hit, and now as an adult, those lyrics were extremely under appreciated

I am 72 years old and grew up with the Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, and later the Eagles. Nickleback was a good band they had some really good songs, some not so good and some I couldn't listen to. But so did most of my favorites. Nickelback was alright, most of the hate probably comes from people who can't play an e chord on a guitar.

This song just plain rocks! Nickelback could have made it simpler, but they never came up for air in the first part of the song, then slowed it down a pace and reduced the volume on the music in the second part. Many people take the lyrical meaning to be a pennance for addiction, but I've always considered it more about the importance of not using and discarding the caring, loving people in our lives. Either way, this is Nickelback at their very best!!
This is the first song I ever heard from them. I remember it took a week of listening to the radio to figure out who it was AND then being ready next time I heard they were next up to get the tape ready to record. Great memories at 12 years old!!!

I'm not like a rock expert but in my favorite genre, as long as you aren't like super superficial and you have lyrics that take thought and talent you will usually get respect.
