I'll be live-tweeting the Golden Globes tonight starting at 8pm EST! See you over on X / Twitter later tonight!
Good on you for not giving in to calling it just X!
You forgot about the sequel to the 2010 Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent 2, neither of which did as well as the first films.
Trying to think about what to have during the Golden Globes. Chocolate covered strawberries sound like fun
Jason is liked by audiences. That is why aquaman 2 is doing well. Jason has to play a character we like for that formula to work. It is limiting.
That is a very week top 11 box office hits. I would only guess Deadpool and despicable me 4 being the only guarantee mega hits.
James Wan knows how to deliver a blockbuster, plain and simple. He doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the only directors ever to deliver billion dollar films in more than one franchise
It was actually "just" one - Fast & Furious 7 was the last time we've seen Paul Walker in his role. Many people wanted to see how they say goodbye. I think anyone could have directed this and the box office would have been the same.
@@blairwitchde so close! It was actually 2!❤️
He's a hack.
I'm gonna have to disagree here, Furious 7 would've very likely made the same amount of money even if James Wan didn't direct it. In this case he doesn't get most of the credit, the circumstances around the film are the bigger factor for its success.
That was the peak of the franchise box office wise and was also propelled by the unfortunate tragedy, but also partially driven by one of more modern action icons in Jason Statham joining the franchise. I can almost guarantee that it would've made the same amount of money had Justin Lin, F. Gary Gray or David Leitch directed it.
@@MAB-8815I think they meant one billion dollar film in 2 different franchises
I think Hollywood has had it too easy for too long. The post Covid numbers are just an indication of how audiences are fed up with poor writing, lazy ideas, dozens of sequels and very few originals that are of high quality. I think this will just resettle the landscape of lowering the ridiculous budgets of movies and the need to concentrate on well written well made original content.
They have to reduce the budgets to 150m at maximum. The won't solve their biggest problem: the abysmal writing with no character arcs and reddit dialogue.
I think people prefer gaming to movies. That is the biggest reason. Once you get out of the cycle of seeing the newest big release the easier to not go at all or at least limited goings.
I think the bigger issue for "Wicked" is that it is being split into two films when it should be one cinematic experience
Definitely agree
Or not literally advertised part 2 immediately but you can put cliffhanger in the ending
Yup, completely unnecessary.
This decision is going to kill the movie at the box office.
I feel like the first movie will do well as audience will be curious. But the second will do a lot less as it’s such a long gap and people will just wait for digital to see what happens.
Mufasa is not the first liveaction followup, they already made sequels to Alice In Wonderland and Maleficent
Maleficent 1 & 2 are just sublime. I eagerly await a third
I raise you 102 Dalmatians
mufassa also isn’t liveaction
Color Purple: "It ONLY cost a hundred million to make". That's the problem. It shouldn't have cost more than 30 million.
Was looking for someone to say this, the movie doesn't look remotely worthy of 100m, only plausible way - majority of that amount going towards actors etc.
@@abhikmoj5853 look at the cast, there is no one who can demand a big paycheck. Maybe the rental cars were really expensive? ;-)
Why? 100m is mid budget these days because of the inflation. Look at 100m in 1995.
35 minute Movie Math???!!! I used to pray for times like this! 🥹
It's like Christmas!
But better!
Prayer works. Lol 😂
@@tornay131 maybe just this one time haha
now hope she revives Morning Movie News as youtube shorts
As a theater worker who worked Christmas…. The color purple was infact sold out like crazy and was honestly what most of the crowds were seeing. However it was genuinely a GHOST TOWN in those theaters the rest of the holidays. It was actually kinda wild to see, I worked the box office quite a bit this holiday season and I never saw it get even remotely full in those theaters again 💀
the audience it was made for came and saw it, and then that was it. Black women are what, 7% of the population? Everybody tends to forget what the word "minority" means to begin with
Damn... that's sad...😂...oops..😢
Mo'nique was right about Oprah! Slowly but surely her true colors are coming out!
Oprah never wanted this movie to succeed to take away HER achievement, the movie was such a bad idea. Everyone in the original is still alive.
Seems Oprah is really just trying to hide her secret relationship with Bill Cosby.
AQAMAN
1.Women love Momoa and guys want to be him (Broad Appeal)
2. Lighter marvel like tone
3. Overseas Box Office
4. Bright colors and good VFX (Visual Spectacle)
5. Fun for the whole family
We only like Jason if he plays a character we like. That IS Jason’s limitations.
I think a lot of these high profile sequels are going to make less than what’s being expected, especially Deadpool 3. It needs to be absolutely amazing with good WoM to live up to expectations. 2023 showed that IP recognition alone isn’t enough to guarantee dominance
I mean the last Spider-Man did gangbusters and the movie is pretty mediocre. Pretty sure Deadpool will do great.
While I do agree with the premise of your statement, I truly hope you're not equating D3 to Quantumania and The Marvels.
The box office will be dead this year overall .
@@Madagon367Uhmmm... No Spiderman movie was ever mediocre. Spiderman far from home and no way home were phenomenal
@@Ikejosh9not really
James wan is the magic sauce for Aquaman
The films are also alot of fun, great family movies(especially at the holidays), with great action(moreso the first but still) and Jason Mamoa is always a blast on screen.
A "magic sauce" for a movie that is basically barely going to break even, if at all. Drop the fangirl/fanboy delusions and look at the numbers objectively.
It is a visually pretty movie.
Jason really has great energy...❤He always looks happy and likes he is enjoying himself
Despicable Me 4. Dont ever underestimate those minions box office pull
4:22 I'd say it has to do with the fact Aquaman (I haven't seen the sequel yet) wasn't embarrassed about being based on 1 of DC's wackier comic books. It had comic accurate outfits, lots of time underwater, simple character motivations, & most importantly BRIGHT COLORS & a lead who SMILED/LAUGHED REGULARLY. It wasn't trying to be "edgy' or "realistic" it was just a good time.
so did the Marvels and it flopped
@@keniellugo8631 My comment was more aimed at the DC movies.
I think Wonka is gonna pass 200 million and looks like it will pass Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The Aquaman movies do well due to the visuals and fight scenes. Their cgi, at least for the first one, was top tier imo
I enjoyed the movie... ❤ 🤷🏾♀️
@treblelatrice926 I haven't seen it just yet but I'm sure it's gonna be good
Gladiator 2 will be awesome if they have Denzel doing his Equalizer thing tearing up Ancient Rome.
I want to see that, Dune 2, and Fall Guy this year.
Aquaman2 was fun. Took my two young boys and they loved it.
_Blue Beetle_ was fun too, but I hardly think about it now; I couldn't even recall it a couple weeks ago when talking about DC's 2023 movies.
don’t underestimate Furiosa 👍
are they going to depict the domestic violence between Harley and the Joker?
The world building, visual spectacle, likable characters, and overall comic book feel made me fall in love with this iteration of Aquaman and his world. The second movie had all of this, to a much lesser extent than the first.
The story is solid for Aquaman. Plus it has a Chinese release.
Don’t underestimate Monsterverse fans with Godzilla X Kong
Never underestimate a tornado Grace. Twisters is going to be huge in 2024.
My guarantee going to the movies: Deadpool, DM4, inside out 2, Dune 2, Beatlejuice 2, and the fall guy.
Mine are Deadpool, Ghostbusters and Joker. Everything else will require dragging someone else to see it with me.
Ahh remember all the way back to the 2023 Movie Math preview, when Fast X and The Little Mermaid were virtually assured billion-dollar club members? Or when Chris Pratt was so toxic he was going to sink Mario and GotG?
Or when Cillian Murphy wasn't a big enough draw and Oppenhiemer was too dour to succeed?
i do believe critics will love Dune Part 2...but the jury is still out if it does bank. Being a fan of "Dune" (including the books) Sign me up for a double feature come this march!
“Dune: Part2” will benefit from being released after “Wonka”. Had the strikes not forced the delay, it would have flopped, because the jury was still out on if Timothee Chalamet was a box-office draw. Also, Austin Butler will have just come off the release of “Masters of the Air”. Since, “Elvis” was over a year and a half ago.
@@ChienaAvtzon that makes no sense. Your justification for him not being a draw until Wonka does not explain why Wonka did well. By your logic should that not have been a flop because he wasnt yet a draw? And if not, then why couldn't dune 2 have done well in the same space making him a draw
@kmichael9787 this exactly. The comment should have been maybe it will do better now as people have seen and seem to have taken a liking to him
Im gonna see it 3 times!!
@@ChienaAvtzonYou couldn't be farther from the truth on this. We all loved him in the first Dune. And that was during the pandemic and when it was released on the same day during HBO. I can't wait for this movie to explode and shut up all the haters and naysayers
I am curious as to why Grace hates Inside Out so much. I love psychology so much it fascinates me and anything to do with emotions and feelings.
I want a proper review of Poor Things. I have not seen the movie, but I want to know why she hates it so much. I'll be honest, it doesn't seem like my cup of tea, either. Still, I'd like to hear her reasoning.
She talked about inside out as like a type of movie that talk about feelings and mix that with her opinion that Pixar someone’s likes to be emotionally manipulative and make you cry just to do it, that’s not the type of thing she’s into. Especially feelings inside a teenage girls head and real beings when in reality feelings are much more complex than what the movie shows i guess
I recall her saying, "My feelings don't look like that," or something similar.
She said she hates talking about feelings so it was too cringe for her lol remember Grace is into the business of things 🤓
@@santaclara6112she discussed it a lot on Twitter. If I said why she doesn’t like it it would be spoilers. Do you want that??
I don’t see Mufasa doing good because people are against Disney right now
"Anyone But You" is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing". The Bard of Avon just keeps on giving. $$$
I think Mufasa is going to tank
When I saw Aquaman they played the second Dune trailer!
Not sure how some of these will do Box Office Wise, but these are currently my personal Top 11 most anticipated films 2024:
1: Deadpool 3
2: Sonic The Hedgehog 3
3: Kung Fu Panda 4
4: Dune: Part Two
5: Inside Out 2
6: Joker 2
7: If
8: Venom 3
9: Mufasa
10 (Tie): Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
10 (Tie): Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
What makes GHOSTBUSTERS FROZEN EMPIRE so appealing is that the trailer makes it feel like an episode of THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS and EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS animated series, which can be argued were far superior to all of the sequels and remakes and is the perfect blueprint of how to do future GB sequel movies.
"Saltburn is one movie. Poor Things is another. They are not the same." Gus Fring
I think the underwater setting and aesthetic/VFX play a part in Aquaman's appeal. It makes the movie stand out from other superhero flicks.
And Gladiator 2 is WAY too high on that list. That movie is going to bomb. Everyone asking, 'How and why is there a sequel to Gladiator? Russell Crowe died at the end.' lol
😂😂😂😂yeah….but the movie sucked and flopped 😂😂😂
Gladiator 2 sounds like the dumbest idea, tbh. I love the first Gladiator, but historical dramas aren't built for sequels. Imagine a "Braveheart 2" or "Titanic 2". Just the sounds of it makes me cringe. What's even worse is putting Denzel Washington in the movie.... [eye roll]
We had _Avatar 2: The Way of Water_ and _Black Panther: Wakanda Forever_ which was in the water, so I don't know that it's unique in that regard. A couple women said they went to see Momoa's muscles.
Gladiator is basically fiction. @@th-sd6ni
the No1 is $14.4M hardly looks like a good week
Spontaniusly went to see Aquaman 2 last night, it was such a great silly "stupid fun" kind of superhero movie, I had a blast. It was pretty epic too, which surprised me.
Remember when everyone was calling doom and gloom on Netflix?
Exactly
Mike White also wrote Migration 😄
So hyped for deadpool 3. I'm glad marvel is taking a step back on their movies to hopefully focus on quality.
Both Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent had sequels! How soon we forget lol
They were box office flops too
@@reannagordon how is that relevant lol they still exist
@@b0ywonder because when Disney makes sequels to remakes that doesn’t go well for them cause the audience doesn’t care. Which is why Maleficent 3 should probably go straight to Disney+
Wolverine feels like marvels superman and spiderman feels like marvels batman in terms of popularity
Ahhh! A 35 minute video. Haven’t had a movie math this long in awhile! ❤❤😂
Goin crazy😂🔥🤷♂️
🙏good work always
What sad prospects for 2024 when we had some original films make the top 10 in 2023. I hope we get some surprises.
Forget trailer 1 and 2, trailer 3 for dune is a serous masterpiece of a trailer, can’t wait !
The disrespect of Dune part 2 in this Chanel is Insane
Hi Grace, I work at a cinema over here in the UK and I overheard two women talking about how excited they were to see Jason Mamoa shirtless 😂😂 So I’m guessing he has something to do with the appeal of the film.
I'll see Dune for certain, and DP 3 unless it has very bad word of mouth. Post covid, my theater going has been way down. Last year, I only saw Gaurdians 3, D&D, and Five Nights at Freddy's on the big screen.
Excellent work!
" Suddenly Dressed as a Member of Kiss "
ROFL
I actually think that Deadpool 3 won’t cross $1 Billion. I suspect the nostalgia for X Men isn’t as strong as we think
I disagree. It will. It will likely be $1.2 BILLION. People want someone to call the MCU garbage. Deadpool will do that and resonate with MANY.
I agree . I’m guessing 700-800 at maximum.
Yeah Deadpool as a character isn’t really as popular as ppl think he is. The first 2 films did as well as they did because both CBMs and Ryan Reynolds were at their peak in popularity. I’m guessing based off the hype right now, it’d do at least $800-850M. I think the trailers will really sell the movie but the word of mouth of how of the past Marvel characters are handled will really determine the overall box office.
Deadpool 2 made $324M domestic and $785M worldwide, so maybe three will match it?
@@sandal_thong8631 Deadpool will benefit from association with MCU … like MCU Spider-Man is now a BILLION $ franchise because of it.
Deadpool 3 should gross MORE than a $ BILLION ($1.1 to $1.2).
You forgot about the sequel to the 2010 Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent 2, neither of which did as well as the first films.
I didn't know about the issues with the cast of The Color Purple... so glad you report on this and bring it to our attention!
Water, ripped dude, long wavy hair = international appeal I’m guessing
Wonka was great. Would love to see it again. Can't wait for Joker!
WBs lineup of movies for 2024 is stellar 🔥🔥
DUNE Part 2 and Furiosa !!!!!
WICKED 💚💚💚 ugh can’t wait. November feels so far 😭
girl dune 2 is gonna do amazing at the box office SORRY
very well thought out analysis 👏🏻 ty
@@BluePradahonestly tho he's right lmao I can't imagine less than 500m, fans really want it and will go at least twice for a huge swathe of them
Yup, it's a superstar cast. WB delayed the movie for that exact reason. Zendaya is a massive draw for the younger crowd. Chalmete coming off a success, Laurence Pugh, Austin Butler has his legion of fans as well.
@@Ray03595 - But you literally proved why “Dune: Part 2” needed to be delayed, regardless of the strikes. Its trailer plays ahead of “Wonka” for a reason.
I didn't watch 1 and will not be watching 2.
The year of sequels. Looks good
Beekeeper will likely do well as you are clearly going to get what you both want and expect. Also the fact it has no new competion for its target audience
Someone did a list of movies likely to bomb and picked that. But I saw the preview the other day, and I could go for this action movie.
Wicked PART 1!???? What? 🙄🙄🙄
🙄🙄🙄
Hey there Grace, I noticed that Apple still has the audience rating and review section in the mobile version of the iTunes app.
Grace, the Traitors is SO GOOD!!! u would love it
I used to go to the cinema around about 3 times A WEEK before the pandemic and now? Barely 2 times a month. The quality of the films coming out isn’t doing it for me, and that combined with the cinema experience overall? It’s a no brainer to stay at home and watch films on my projector
Seems to me that "industry standard" ought to be reflected in SAG contracts. If these things are already guaranteed by the SAG contract, then SAG needs to step in and enforce their contract. If these things are not guaranteed by the SAG contract, then it is high time that they get them into the contract rather than relying on the studios honoring an unenforceable "industry standard".
Grace, around how much does a movie like Wonka (which had a $125M budget) need to make to start becoming profitable? I always wonder about that with these big movies.
Probably around $400m once marketing costs are taken into account.
Its usually 2.5x the production budget + marketing. So if a film had a budget of 100mi + 50mi marketing, then it would need at least 250mi + 50mi = 300mi to break even and start being profitable
I would say after $450M it would start making profit.
$400 mil sounds about right. $125 budget, maybe $100 marketing, box office gets split with theaters.
2.5 x the production budget is a good baseline
I wish you had gone into more detail about the treatment of the cast of The Color Purple because I really haven’t heard any news about. You seem upset by it but I have no idea what’s going on. Were they forced to work excessive hours or did they just not get enough lattes? Without context people will think it’s just Hollywood drama.
they all had to get rental cars and drive themselves to set which is NEVER the case on ANY production shoot ever
Enjoyed the biggest potential blockbuster list!
I thought Ghostbusters Afterlife was mediocre at best. I don’t care about this new one
Anyone But You. The success should be obvious, people want a romcom with an attractive likeable cast.
so simple, so obvious. good looking people sell movie tickets.
I really recommend The Traitors! I watched Season One of all three versions - UK, Aussie and USA. 🙂
Glad to see Wonka is still doing great at the box office. I’m really looking forward to Deadpool 3 and Dune Part 2 I think the reason why people like Aquaman movies is that Aquaman is just fun action guy, he’s having fun in the movie, also the visuals were pretty amazing. The love story between Atlanna and Thomas was great, too.
Grace are you doing a review on Mean Girls?
anybody know where saltburn is currently/will be streaming? i absolutely loved it and want to see it again
Prime Video
@@BeyondTheTrailer life saver. thanks grace!
Dang Im not jazzed about that list at all :( I go to the theatre EVER week too
I loved your top 10 (+1). How did I not know Mike White was involved in Despicable Me 4?! I will be sat.
I need to see a trailer for Gladiator 2, I just don't know what the hell its going to be.
Don't expect to much.Ridley Scott is done.
Dune 2 is too low on the list. She is always off the mark when it comes to this franchise. Dune is the best sci-fi experience we have had since the Matrix trilogy.
I am avoiding all of the spoilers for DP3 but it is so hard because of all the stuff the leakers are letting out. In fact, avoiding spoilers for movies is a new Year resolution that I hope to stick with. I just want to enjoy movies.
Gladiator 2 is not going to be bigger than Inside Out 2.
That Indian tribe episode of What If wasn't half bad 🙂. Great antagonist, the general guy 😂...it was something different, I liked it.
I saw Night Swim this weekend and it was just straight up average. It was kind of fun if you just kinda laugh along at it.
I'M EXCITED FOR DUNE 2 AND FURIOSA!
factory content is the norm , and it's always sold
Watched Aquaman despite it's RT critics score and was pleasantly surprised.
While not at the scope of the original, was still entertaining. Was a mashup of the Pirates movies with a grown up version of Journey 2.
The humor at times was a bit too slapstick
Grace what about Furiosa in the top 10?? That trailer is epic.

this is one of my favorite movie math of all time. i love that the Super Mario Bros Movie still being sucesful. i love videogames. i'm so happy seeing videogames adaptations going so well lately. Joker 2 is the movie that i want to watch the most on 2024. i love Joker 1. it is a 8 out 10 movie to me. maybe a 9 out 10. i just watched it once. i will rewatch it before i watch Joker 2. it will be the first Lady Gaga movie that i will watch. if i like her acting on Joker 2 i will watch all the others movies and also in the series that she is in. Lady Gaga is one of my favorite singers of all time. i think it was a great video, Grace.
Hahaha literally watching this after getting out of the theater seeing Night Swim! It wasn’t so bad IMO. It helped that my expectations were low though. Could’ve been better if it went for the R rating.
Of course it's not going for the R-rating....how else would all the teenagers be able to see it. It's barely making any money even with a PG-13 rating...
WOW Grace, you've outdone yourself with this amazing and entertainingly full Movie Math!!! THANK YOU!!! Made my night for sure 😀😊🍿🎥✨💖
Just came from watching Night Swim. It wasn't gr8 but I was entertained. I also enjoyed Ferrari. Cast not being fed? I did some extra work in LA way back when and extras were fed most of the time. I don't remember not being fed. As for streaming price hikes, I've solved that problem. I stream one service a month. Last month it was Paramount + and this month it's Apple TV. Next month it might be Amazon Prime, but I haven't decided yet. Gr8 Movie Math, my Gracie! 📽️ 🍿 🌭 🌺 😘
I am getting the good trailer of dune in theaters look amazing
Inside Out felt like a parody of the Pixar film formula
not interested at all in deadpool.
Hi Grace😊 what about Red Sonja 2024?
I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned it yet.
have they even shot that yet, seems likely its not happening yet
Glad Aquaman beat out the marvels a win for DC
I’m surprised Venom 3 wasn’t mentioned
It should be. It will make more than a few on this list I bet
I don’t think general audiences really care or know about behind the scenes drama, I never knew there was drama until you brought it up, but I already saw the movie.
