when I see people complaining that the range isn't high enough especially when towing, I'm wondering if they complain that the Toyota Yaris or those microcars (Fiat500) about how they can't tow 10,000lbs! Would those complainers actually buy a tiny car and then complain or would they do their homework and buy the appropriate vehicle for their needs? So, if you're gonna tow over long distance often then EVs are not for you (yet). But if you're gonna stay within a certain range I bet an EV might sound interesting especially when doing a lot of stop & go!
I have owned several new trucks and the Lightning Lariat is by far my favorite! Accelerates like a monster and overall very refined. Quiet and smooth driving with an excellent audio system and comfortable seats.
Absolutely love my Ford Lightning. I've given some test rides to guys at work and they aren't ready for the torque and speed when flooring it. The large truck is deceptively quick, so their perception vs experience is always beyond expectation. I use mine for commuting and running errands around town. Comfortable, quiet, fast and feature rich.
I live on the top of a mountain. Going to work everyday I take the short way up which is just 1 mile, and I take the long way down which is 4 miles. So going to work is free. Even gain some miles back in my range.
Well done, I really enjoy your reviews! All the info you need without the fluff and drama. Your review of the '17 Honda Ridgeline helped sway me into buying one. Now this review is pushing towards a Lightning.
Though this truck looks amazing and would likely suit most people who occasionally need a truck for truck things, I cannot wrap my head around a $100k vehicle that can't make it from Toronto to Ottawa without stopping.
Toronto to Ottawa by car is 450 km. The range of this test truck is just shy of 500. At room temperature, I could confidently make that drive non-stop. In the winter, I would have to spend about 15 seconds dealing with the charger: once while I hook it up to the truck, and once when I return to disconnect. The actual charging takes place while I grab a bio-break and coffee, sufficient to add 100 km or more to the battery if required.
Hey Jim, both statements you made are incorrect-- I've driven this truck close to 500 km on a charge myself, and there are plenty of things you can tow that would leave you with much more than 100 kilometers of range.
@@jimsteinway695 Jim you are 100% correct. Justin do a tow test then with a 7k trailer and upload it. Another liberal who doesnt know what a truck is for.
@@JustinPritchard I don't understand why people that have no clue what they are talking about have the need to spew out misinformation. For me the lightning is an absolutely amazing utility/work truck but I will say, If you do a lot of LONG DISTANCE towing, then this might not be the truck for you. No different then if you want to tow 10 000 lbs, you don't buy a motorcycle. We all have different use cases.

They need to make about 3 million Mavericks as fast as possible if they don’t want to go bankrupt. Most People can’t afford these super high dollar trucks with 7% interest rates.
How is your winter range? Roughly 50% less? Since you’re only supposed to charge to 80-90% that would be 296-333 in perfect conditions. So around 200km after range loss?
Down about a third. No problem to fill to 100 percent. More than enough for 330 - 350 km in the cold, heat blasting, foot down. Your results will vary.
Sorry Justin forgive me for saying but I have seen a few Lightning Reviews and they are not even close to yours. You think of the meat and potatoes guy who wants to know what makes this thing tick. Unlike others who review it for the guy flashing the check book so he can say .'look at me I'm saving the planet" yet has know idea how it works , they only know they have to plug it in. Keep up the good work so informative.
Appreciated your thorough and enthusiastic review of the Lightning. I can only wish you had this weeks -20 to -30*C temperatures right here in Ontario. The 50/50 weight balance etc is great. However, have you ever arrived at the only fast charger in town and it's DOA? You can't plug into the street 110V. and I'd never buy a truck with 100's of pounds of glass roof. On a $100,000.00 truck the EV payback will be sometime in 2040... maybe. Hope I'm wrong.
You can plug in with 110v with the charger they send you. The XLT, just down from the Lariat was only 58k. Considering a new, gas version of a loaded 150 XLT gas vehicle can cost upwards of 47k and just 430 HP, the lightning is far superior outside of towing. I've also never arrived at a charging station that is DOA. I'm in a state with dozens of chargers all over.
Good question and I'm not sure. Wasn't my vehicle just testing it. I tend to do the rust coating on all of my cars that get winter driven, but I would definitely be making sure I checked with a Ford dealership to make sure that rust proofing that lightning wouldn't void my warranty or cause any other concerns first Hopefully an actual owner can chime in and let us know, I'm definitely not an expert in that department!
Every time I go to my Ford dealer to get my 22 tremor oil change I see another 5 lightnings that got traded back in. I’m guessing the over 70 mile towing range didn’t excite too many truck fans. I get 850 miles on my 36 gallon tank.
Interesting, every time I see 5 more Lightnings at my dealership, my friend (who works there) says they're customers waiting for pickup. He just sold 10 of these to a local contracting business who will use them as a fleet. They'll save thousands on fuel and maintenance.
Edmunds did a towing test with 7,000 lbs and got 170 miles. Not great if you do a lot of long distance towing, but most people don't. I normally only tow 50 miles or so.
You should only fully charge to 100% for long road trips that you will be leaving on soon after reaching 100%. Its not good to fully charge everyday while leaving sitting on your driveway. For everyday use you should charge to 80 -90% to maintain good battery health. Some vehicles are equipped with a LFP chemistry type battery packs which is recommended to fully charge to 100% all the time but it's not the case with Ford vehicles yet. All to say know what type of battery pack you have and if recommended to fully charge to 100% when not being used right away as this can accelerate battery degradation and decrease its life and usable range.
This all well and good but I'll keep my 2004 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 crew cab diesel with 158000 mi. It's been paid for for years garaged all it's life still looks great and spent all it's life in southern Wisconsin . I know diesel fuel is about 4.00 $ a gallon and it gets about 17 mi per gallon and it cost about 42,000 $ new. It will tow anything I can put behind it . If that new Ford costs over 90,000 $ it will take a lot of diesel fuel to make up the payment for it, and it's only a half ton that will not tow much. Pretty much a toy.
The Lightning is a “1/2 Ton” pickup. It’s NOT meant to compete with the 2500. You’re comparing apples and oranges. For comparison use the sierra 1500 . Do you call the 1500 a toy? The only major shortcoming when compared to another “1/2 ton “ truck is range. It amazes me when people use their 3/4 ton diesels pickup to compare to the Lightning.
Climate control is resistive heating so don’t think battery and motor temp affect getting hot air right away. Resistive heating should be pretty quick regardless.
@@JustinPritchard if you can get 10 years out of the battery, you will have not saved enough money on gas relative to the premium you have paid for the EV over an ICE F150. Starting with the first charge and drive, the life of the battery is already decreasing.

Great review, thank you! I bought the same truck in California 5 months ago and absolutely love it. Because of "Range anxiety" and other factors there are tons of these higher-end models sitting on dealer lots, we got an amazing deal for a loaded 2022 Platinum model with 10K MILES on it for $66k. We also got $10k for our 2014 Prius. So with tax, we paid around $61k. I had an EV charger put in the garage and it costs us about $4 to get 20% added. We normally don't let the battery dip below 45% and only charge it to 65%. Research from a University in Australia says you can more than double the life span of your battery that way. There's a detailed TH-cam video on it th-cam.com/video/y9WqIEAYwZo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3slEG1TZFgtTRK8Z. Obviously, everybody’s situation is different, but for us, this works out great. We are moving to Utah and will need snow tires, your review really helped us make the decision to go with the X-ICE. Do you have any experience with 20' wheels vs 22' in for the lightning in snow?

So it had a range of 321km in your driveway at start up. Seems to me if you were to tow that would be a nightmare. In Sudbury and other areas north of parry sound there is not alot of charging infrastructure available for the F150 lightning. A few points of the video. You had to buy a coffee, use the washroom and check emails. You did not explain how much it cost to charge the pickup from the DC fast charge. if you make lets say $55-75 per hour stopping at a gas station for a few mins vs 1 hr is equal in your time. For me I do trips from Mississauga to French River towing a boat. North of barrie there are barely any DC fast charges. My point is if the lightning was halted production something is not right. I would take the hybrid and 136 litre tank based on convenience alone.
There charging at home because it's cheaper to charge off peak & Fords App & charging network is a nightmare & winter range performance & price per kwh is a disaster. And thats before you spend the 25% over msrp.
Do Canadians use trucks for construction or for hauling materials or tow campers. Until you do an honest review of what a truck is actually used for, your just blowing smoke😂 if you’re honest then do a real test and you will have to admit to your viewership that it’s just a car with terrible range and a charging application that was developed in 2019 and ignored till now. I would take the hybrid and 136 litre tank based on convenience alone.
There charging at home because it's cheaper to charge off peak & Fords App & charging network is a nightmare & winter range performance & price per kwh is a disaster. And thats before you spend the 25% over msrp.
1/2 ton $100,000. Yep great truck. Can’t wait till u rip that battery out on a back road.
Hey, anything's possible when you invent fictional scenarios to support your own pre-manufactured notions on the topic, right?
The hell is a hydro bill
Where I live in northern Ontario, most of our electricity is hydroelectric, so we call it a hydro bill.
liked video ,but stopped watching when i had to convert kilometers to miles
Do Canadians use trucks for construction or for hauling materials or tow campers. Until you do an honest review of what a truck is actually used for, your just blowing smoke😂 if you’re honest then do a real test and you will have to admit to your viewership that it’s just a car with terrible range and a charging application that was developed in 2019 and ignored till now. The Bluetooth issues. The mapping is old and glitchy. The crappy little clips that hold the charging port cover on fail and fall right off by themselves. Cmon man you make this thing sound like a reliable work truck! Very misleading take on the lightning.
Huh? Where do I make it sound like a reliable work truck? Where do I say misleading things?
Common, timecodes. List em.
Chop chop, bobo.
It's an over prices piece of poo. It looks like a truck but can't work like one.
Oh look, another random comments section expert who can't string two sentences together without making a 4th grade level spelling mistake, I'm embarrassed for you 😞
