Hello Michael, This arrangement of this song is based entirely on the original song by Elton John on his 1971 album by the same name. In fact, the strings on this arrangement are also based pretty much exactly on Paul Buckmaster's orchestral arrangement on the original album. You may also like Davey Johnstone's acoustic guitar arrangement on the original album. The entire "Madman Across The Water" album is fantastic and probably my favorite album by Elton John check it out!

The stories I’ve read about Elton in Mix Magazine told by his producer, who tragically died with his wife in a car accident, are flabbergasting. If you can ever read that article, do it! It gives you insight to what happened and trust me you’ll never look at Elton the same again.

Although this version is unbelievably good, it is a clever combination of both Elton John versions. The original widely know version with strings and the lesser known version without strings. The latter has Mick Ronson(David Bowie, Ian Hunter) on guitar. His guitar work is outstanding on it and as always inventive and ahead of its time especially hi s first solo. If you haven't listened to it YOU REALLY MUST in order to fully understand and appreciate this version.

Haven't even listened yet, but you had me at "Brandi Carlile singing Elton John". Thumbs up, now relax and bliss out. So, now that I've listened, yes, it's frigging brilliant. But mad propz must go to the O.G. string arranger, Paul Buckmaster, who arranged the strings for Elton John's "Madman Across The Water" album (which is the first album I ever bought - I had good taste). Brandi and team deliver a faithful, and passionate reading very close to the original. But it's like playing Sgt Pepper (or Beethoven) - it's okay to play the original and just put your own seasoning on it, rather than try to do something completely different.

Brandi is a great artist. I last saw her at New Orleans Jazz Fest and she nailed her performance. You should listen to her Led Zeppelin covers, they are mind blowing amazing. Well actually everything she sings is fantastic. Her band is great too, the guitar and bass player are brothers and amazing players. Thanks for the video Michael.

I have not heard of her either so it was funny that someone told you it was like not hearing about Jason Isbell because a friend just told me about him a few months ago and I have since listened to every tune he ever wrote and learned quite a few of his songs. He is incredible. You have a fantastic site here and your mastery of theory and guitar skills are amazing. Thanks Michael.

You should embrace that man no need to change the title. Be proud of everything knowledge comes when it want sometimes before or after the fact. Facts are for fools! It is often the considered foolish that create what become the facts over time! You rule Michael.

No chance. Yes, her voice is phenomenal, but the combination of Elton John’s equally powerful voice, coupled with the chordal beauty and amazing piano, just simply isn’t matched by Carlisle’s guitar voicing. The John live BBC version (a trio mind you!) still blows the mind. Her voice is great but the shear musicianship of John! He was a Monster! And…..this is a cover.
