How did you get started in music production? Share your story below
Out of necessity!
I was the guy in the band that had to learn to record if we were going to get a record deal
Budget!
Haha indeed@@thesongacademy5017
Me too! I was THAT guy that drove everyone nuts!@@thesongacademy5017
Brandi is so insightful, intuitive, I can see why she is becoming a very successful Producer!
Agreed 100%! I want to restart my band just to have Brandi produce it!
I was working at Tower Records in 2005 when Brandi Carlile's self titled debut was released. The first song, "Follow" had me at Carlile's voice. I was floored at the expression and breath control. By the second song, "What Can I Say?," I was done. The harmonies and lyrics had me thinking Jim Croce, in all of the good ways.
Marvellous! Yes, absolutely loved that first album and everything else that followed!
Very cool! She still plays Follow on the road. Proof her songs are timeless.
What an absolute pleasure to see the amazing Brand Carlile on the channel!
Agreed, very blessed
Brandi is redefining modern production and artist development. Great interview
Thanks ever so much Tim!
I am in awe of Brandi’s many talents. I saw Tanya’s movie in the theater long before it began showing on Netflix and became totally captivated with Brandi and Shooter in how dedicated their loyalty to bringing Tanya back to life was. It was and remains such a beautiful testament to all involved.
Brandi Carlile has an amazing voice. She and The Twins have amazing harmonies.
About 2009-10, I saw Carlile on back to back nights at The 9:30 Club-500-ish capacity in DC and the next night at The Rams Head in Annapolis, MD. For the latter show, I was 20 feet from the band. The room had low ceilings and was perfect for acoustic and jazz.
The band was able turn off all application and do a song pure voice and instrument. Amazing.
Thanks for sharing, that sounds amazing! I remember the 9.30 Club very well! In the early '90s when I was a wee bairn I played the older, rat infested one.
@@Producelikeapro I remember cramped and smelled of stale beer. You know-the bigger the dive, the more it's loved.
Best part? The original 9:30 location at 930 F Street was renovated as The Atlantis and is now under the same umbrella as the current 9:30 Club
That's very cool to hear!@@edalder2000
Oh I've been there a few times. I saw Fleet Foxes there and it was the best live mix I've ever heard. I was kind of shocked given the room and the mix of every other show I'd ever seen there. Never went to see Brandi, though. That would have been a treat.
@@3rdGen-Mediayes, I got to see Brandi live a couple of times at the beginning and it was truly amazing! I was just talking to my old business partner and he said she was so obviously a star from the moment you met her.
I've been playing guitar, and kind of "playing" drums, for about 32 years, but seriously playing for about 28 years. And I did the whole band thing, metal scene...etc. But like most aspiring musicians/bands nothing serious came of it. So I did everything in a mangled order: kids, college degree, marriage (mother of kids) 😂. Anyways, I stopped seriously playing for YEARS! And then I heard a solo (Heretic-Synyster Gates) that made me have to learn sweep picking, which I always wanted to do. This lead me back into my true passion in life, music. I didnt have time to the band thing so I decided to record my stuff instead and have my old drummer lay down tracks when he could. Well after the first song we did from start to finish I quickly became obsessed with the production world, especially mixing! And Ive been learning and developing the craft ever since. Thanks for all you do, Warren, to help the people like me out here trying to do it on their own.
Thanks ever so much for the amazing comment, I really appreciate it
Such an articulate and intuitive lady with a total understanding of the creative process. Great interview Warren.
Brandi is a one of kind artist and producer, the best of the best
this is exciting that you get to meet her! Her art is one of the highpoints in contemporary music to me.
Thank you so much for watching!
Amazing! What an honour this has been.
Such a blessing to be able to talk to Brandi!
What a superb interview with such an important artist and now a successful Producer!
AW shucks! Thanks ever so much!
Finally! Have waited for this since you teased it on IG a while back.
Absolutely! Thank you ever so much
i was lucky to have produced a few tracks on Brandi's 1st album. it's been amazing to see her rocket into the stratosphear!!

Thank you for interviewing Brandi! I'm a true fan! Love her music and enjoyed reading Broken Horses. I believe she unselfishly shares her life story about herself, how difficult her journey was to pursue music... her true calling in life and her interest in producing many talented upcoming
artists. It's incredible how she and Catherine find time to give back to people less fortunate in life. Your truly an amazing example for all of us to learn from... good luck at the Grammys!
I totally agree! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Great interview. Brandi is such a genuine and humble person and so talented. Just love her to bits.
Agreed 100%
Loved this interview and love Brandi. One of my favorite concerts of all time was seeing her in a small venue in Chicago around 2009. Maybe 300 seats, everyone sitting on folding chairs. Just her and the twins on a small stage. So intimate and personal. I will never forget it.
Wow! That sounds truly amazing
Amazing, insightful interview. I so respect and admire Brandi Carlile. The fact that she connected with Joni and everything that followed is so cool.
Agreed! Such an amazing connection indeed!
My favorite and possibly the best interview (interaction) I have heard... Thanks you two...
Wow! That's wonderful to hear!
What a wonderful talent Brandi is!
One of the best
Brilliant interview and discussion both of you! What incredible insight and connectivity of such a wide breadth of artistry and influences. Brandi is such a treasure!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Agreed, Brandi is so sharp, plus very insightful! Only an Artist with her level of experience could have such a unique understanding of being an artist and how to communicate ideas to them!
immediately went to listen to Brandi's music again, sooooo good!
Superb
Huge talent!
Absolutely!@@metalman3227
I started my process with "the process" then I re-processed the process and brought a whole bunch of my process to the table...
seriously, though, this was an immaculate interview, absolutely loved it. So much information gained! great lighting and camera work as well classy.
Thank You!

Not kidding, 120 seconds in and I LOVE her! What a beautiful way to look at producing.
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Brandi sounds like a right down to earth gal, with a sharp ear for music and full of energy. Great interview, thanks very much
Uber talented! Blessed to be able to talk to her
It surprised me that I found this fascinating- as just a Brandi music fan (don’t know any thing about music production)
Glad you enjoyed the video!
What amazes me is that the little place she is from may as well been on the far side of Mars. Ravensdale? At the time she grew up that wasn't even a starting point for anything. I know!!! (Drummer from Enumclaw)There was nothing except maybe a few loggers, so it really shows its not where you're from but where you take it. If Elon Musk wants to traveled across the universe he should consult Brandi first because she has already traveled the distance to where she is today. A LONG LONG WAY. Also, Thank you Warren for being such a cool a gracious person to meet at NAMM. Great Interview!!!
Thanks ever so much for sharing! I really appreciate it
I love the song turpentine so much and it is just amazing that she wrote that as a teen
Marvellous indeed!
What a wonderful and insightful interview. I really highlights how much of being a producer requires being open and observant as well as providing guidance in the creative process.
Thanks ever so much, I really appreciate it
Love you Brandi..
Big hugs frm Indonesia
Incredible talent
Excellent!!!!
Thanks Monty!
Well done. You're a good interviewer, Warren. Brandi is supremely talented.
Thanks ever so much Alex
Brilliant interview Warren.
Thanks ever so much
You know, I remember my first drive alone. I really enjoyed this interview, I got a lot of good album recommendations and It was perfect for a Friday night. I also enjoyed "In the Canyon Haze". Thanks!
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Hello, Sir! Wonderful interview. So much appreciated. I loved hearing that both your favourite Joni albums are Hejira. Mine is as well. The amalgamation of jaco with Joni is perfect. Loved hearing about the internal rhymes detail. I also really appreciate the natural conversation between you two. It’s such a breath of fresh air as it feels so real. Fantastic job, Warren. I look forward to when we meet again.
Thanks ever so much Topher! You obviously have impeccable taste!
This is my new favorite PLAP interview! So good! Great stuff. Wish it were longer!

had the story on about all my playlists for a decade... nice interview
Marvelous song! Glad you enjoyed the interview
The Story is one of my favourite songs ever and is mine and my wife's song
Yes, beautiful song
Excellent interview
Thanks ever so much!
In my physical education (PE) class, the teacher asked someone to volunteer to demonstrate pushups by stepping forward. Everybody in line took a step backwards giving the impression that i had volunteered. Same thing happened in my first band. That's how I became a producer. I'm very thankful.
Haha that sounds familiar
Amazing talent and wonderful conversation
Yes, huge talent! Thanks ever so much!
I was in the studio on Saturday with my engineer/co-producer. He loves your channel, talks about it all the time and said Brandi was your guest this week. I sang with Brandi twice when I was 12 in Portland (the videos are on my channel) -such an amazing weekend. Brandi and I talked a lot about how to get the best out of your voice back then. It would be fascinating to see what different things Brandi would do to bring out all the things I think she must have heard 6 years ago and all the places my voice can go now. One day, I'll give her a call.
Thanks ever so much for sharing. That’s such an amazing experience
I’d never even heard of her before. I just stumbled over her amazing song The Joke. Wow, what a vocal performance! I was excited to hear she is also a producer!
Yes! I credible singer, songwriter and producer!
@@Producelikeapro I’m glad I found her. I don’t think she’s well known in Australia.
Fascinating interview. Thank you Warren and Brandi.

thank you Warren and thank YOU Brandi

Wow. Fantastic. Please do more of these with producers/artists at the level of Brandi.
Agreed 100%!

Yes! Truly amazing
Excellent Warren!!!
Thanks ever so much Carl
Great interview!! I love this so much! Just after a ver few questions, Brandi always seems to turn being interviewed into a conversation. Thanks!
Absolutely! Brandi is a joy to talk with
Desperate for a new Brandi album! what about releasing Blue??? Also a live album would be good - been watching the P!nk tour and it has been thrilling!
I’m sure there’s plenty in the works! Incredibly hardworking and quite prolific to say the least!
I first heard The Story when my mum, sister and I watched The Lucky One as this song plays in the credits. I remember when we heard it for the first time and we all burst out laughing when Brandi's voice cracked as it caught us off guard. We kept rewinding it and getting into fits of laughter again. During lockdown, I discovered Brandi again and started listing to more of her songs and I felt this odd sense guilt looking back at laughing at The Story when I first heard it.
Hearing Brandi talk about how her voice cracking for the first time singing it made her almost burst out laughing 40:27 made me realise that my reaction was just a pure, genuinie one and how silly I now feel for feeling that hint of guilt. There was no mal or mocking intent, just amusement.
Thanks ever so much for sharing, I really appreciate it
Great interview! Getting into a producing roll seems like a natural evolution in her musical journey
Exactly! Agreed 100%!
Indeed it was. Thanks, Lee
being empathic is a major soft skill... not just empathetic but kinda beinga mindreader... because music is before language and not everyone can communicate goals and dreams. I get accused of beinga mind reader a lot... but its really being anticipatory. Crucial skill.
Huge skill to have, in life in general!
Another great interview. Thank you.
Thanks ever so much
What a pleasure to watch this interview. Two Genius's... Learned so much about all the things...So interesting to hear all the nuances of this role. Thank you.
Thanks ever so much! So glad you enjoyed it!!
Wow, wonderful!
Thanks ever so much
Amazing interview with one of the best singer/songwriters around today.
Thanks ever so much
I discovered Elton and Bernie too when I was 12 but I had the vinyl. Much bigger than a CD. We would spend hours listening while reading lyrics and liner notes.
Got to love reading lyrics off an album cover!
Wondering how I missed this earlier and glad to find it now. 💖
what a great interview!!!!
Thanks ever so much
Excellent, excellent. Fabulous interview. Love me some Brandi Carlile...and Joni of course. Delightful post. Thanks! a 70-year-old fan
Joni, T-Bone, Rick. What a life path!
Thanks for sharing this! 👍
You’re very welcome!
Not to be confused with Belinda Carlisle of 80's band The Go-Go's 🙂 Love the Joni Mitchell stories, "Amelia" is one of my favourite songs and I have a soft spot for the "Dog Eat Dog" (1986) album although it arguably suffers from 80's-itis 🙂 Great interview, Warren 👍🎵🎶🎤
Haha frankly hadn't thought of that confusion! Joni is such an amazing talent!
Magnifica entrevista a brany Carlile gracias

Her recent pairing with Jacob Collier on Little Blue is magical.
Marvellous
Wow what an amazing guest! I didn't know she transitioned to production. I still sing songs from The Story almost every day and I use it as a reference. Her Miley Cyrus collab was kind of an odd choice though.
Always good to think outside the box!
@@Producelikeapro But I thought you were an ITB evangelist ;)
@@3rdGen-Mediahaha I love it all!
Actually, I grew up with brothers and a Dad who loved music and played Guitar, percussion and piano. So music was part of birth gift in some sort of way. Moreover, I'm from reunion island and music is part of our history. Our local music which is called "Maloya" was made by slaves who fled in the mountain and the forest, and they had to communicate in some sort of non-comprehensive way so they can exchange information without "masters" knowing. So, percussion build out of whatever was available was the communication process. Then voice come in and maloya was born. (Listen to Danyel Waro one of the best for traditional maloya). Then growing up I had the opportunity to "produce" a pretty amateur dancehall project learning to mix by myself, and then I never stop. went to audio production school in montreal (Musitechnic) and work in the field for small artist and few documentaries until I got a job as a teacher.
Thanks ever so much for sharing that
Love these interviews! 🙏Regarding "producers not often being artists", two more "artistproducers" who did great production work just just popped up in my head! :) Todd Rundgren and Jeff Lynne. And also Daniel Lanois, when thinking about it ( but from a slightly different angle, producer first, then making solo records)!
Indeed! There's always exceptions to the rule, although both Jeff Lynne and Daniel Lanois are not huge front men, both consummate professionals. The point is large personalities that are used to being the centre of attention don't often make great producers, whereas instrumentalists that are able to be part of the band, it's arrangement, feel, groove, have an amazing understanding of their role
@@Producelikeapro I totally get your point, interesting observation! They all have this attitude of being servants to the music. It´s a deep thing.
@@viktorbuck8342yes! Very well said
yes, breaths are very important in order to sing the lines properly.
Anyone know what screensaver that is?
I am hypnotized by the monitor......
So cool. Great interviewer and interviewee!
(COMPLETELY aside from the interview.... curious why more attention wasn't put towards clear audio(?), especially considering the guest and since it took place in an actual studio.... and since the lavs were visible, something more appropriate could have been also. Just odd to have to listen through the distraction of muddy lavs when there was no reason to have to here. ps, still a fan)
Didn't she have this hit song heavens a place on earth from a few years back?
That would be Belinda Carlisle. 😊
Delightful conversation between two Lesbian icons.
I could only be so lucky to be considered any kind of ‘icon’!
Edited a dumb comment based on mistaken identity.
Thanks ever so much for sharing Loren!
Are you thinking about Belinda Carlisle?
@@Mywebdots OMG, I'm so dumb. Yes. Sorry Brandi. D'oh!
Haha we've all been there!@@L.Scott_Music
What an amazing conversation... so much chemistry between you two! You should do some music together .... @producelikeapro
Aw shucks! Thanks ever so much
That was such a nice interview...........if ever there was a force in the music business, it's Carlile. I still remember mixing her at my old job, Hotelcafe. This was around the mid aughts. I'd never heard of her then. I walked up to the stage to introduce myself and ask what everyone needed. First thing she said was, "hey how's it going man....just so you know I sing really loud, like I'm really loud!". I thought ok cool, let's do this. Then soundcheck starts and...... holy SH*T!!!!.. ok!!! 😳. She was the real deal!. Thinking back to that moment almost 20yrs ago, then to her bringing Joni back to the world.....and now a producer, It's quite an accomplishment and arc of a career.
